Hello guys,
I started a new model and the challenge is to finish it for the end of the month.
The Engine:
WNW engine is very good but I love scratch... ;)

Welcome to the forum!
A nice start on this model, Alain. Keep it coming!
-
Yes, a very nice start. But why did you replace the spark plugs with ones from taurus? Are the latter better detailed?
Stefan
-
Just wondering at what age you became a Kit-Rookie?
Because it would seem you have grown out of that stage of development and moved on to Kit-Master ;)
Nice start :)
Von Buckle

Outstanding work on the engine! I am looking forward to the rest of your build!
RAGIII

You have made a great start on this wonderful kit, looking forward to seeing more progress.
Des.

Off to an excellent start so far and will be following along with interest .
Terri
-
One month time limit? I sure wish I could build them that fast. I'll be watching this with interest as I have some interest in this kit myself.
Cheers,
Chris

Hello guys,
Thanks for your kind words. I use Taurus spark plugs because I think one are more accurate but it's a personnal (and subjective ;D) point of view. I'll try to make pictures. I'm still a "kit rookie" because, when I see the work of some "alien" (especially in scratch section here), I know that "the road is rather long". ;)
In France, I love Bruno Pautigny's work. His paint is amazing.
For the J1, I use the Windsock datafile and those websites:
http://wwimodeller.co.nz/photo-walkaround-german-1917-armoured-junkers-j1-no-2/
http://www.repulomuzeum.hu/Hajtomuvek/BEenz250SP.htm
I said there is a challenge because I want to be ready for a show on october 5th. This will be a surprise for a friend.
More pictures soon. I'll close the fuselage (?) this afternoon or tomorrow. ;)
Best regards.
Alain.

Good evening to all,
For today, paint, weathering and assembly. Fuselage is ready to be glued. J1 is one of the first kit of Wingnut so the adjustements are very tight. Paint, especially oil one, is wide enough to have trouble. I tried (like a friend of mine, a very good painter) to dry the paint with a little hair-dryer... What a bad idea, little pieces of plastic DON'T LIKE heat. Look at the seat for example. :( :(
Anyway, I never build a kit without mistakes. One day perhaps... ::)
So, the pictures:

To be a little didactic:
I used Prince August paints for details, oil paints and AK (or Mig) products for weathering, AZ line for cable.
Best regards.
Alain.
-
Nice job on the interior Alain. I've never heard of Prince August paint, but it seems to do the trick.
Cheers,
Chris

Hello Alain:
We all make mistakes, so don't feel like the lone ranger. You weathering on the seat is really neat, looks quite convincing, and your wood tones are outstanding. The radio is pretty slick as well. I liked the pictures you sent of the J1 in Canada. Nice to see that together. You are correct, this was one of the first four that WNW released.
Looking forward to seeing you progress through the kit.
Best
Mark
-
Mistakes or not, she's looking great so far! The Junkers never really caught my eye so I have largely ignored this kit; you are starting to change that.
Thanks for sharing your build,
Chris
-
Just wondering at what age you became a Kit-Rookie?
Because it would seem you have grown out of that stage of development and moved on to Kit-Master ;)
Nice start :)
Von Buckle
My thoughts, exactly, Alain! Brilliant start. The seat looks fine to me.
Cheers,
Bud

Outstanding interior Alain! I love the weathering of the components and your wood grain looks great!
RAGIII

Your cockpit is truly inspiring!!!! Love your work!!!! And also love this plane!!!

Excellent worn finish on the seat. Looking forward to seeing more! Thanks for sharing Alain
Here is a contemporary postcard of the Junkers J1 to celebrate your build

Hello to all,
More thanks for your kind words, it's very motivating.
Fuselage is closed with a little mastic. Jonction between lower wing and fuselage is difficult. I had to sand down and use mastic too. If not, there was a gap which is not existing on the pictures of the J1. It's a very difficult place to work. I'll show with picture.
I worked on the upper wing (about 50 cm lenght !!) and there is the mistake of this kit, there's a 3 mm gap beetween central section and the (I don't know english word for "aileron"). I'll use a piece of alu to hide this gap.
I'll show all of that. ;)
Best regards.
Alain.
-
(I don't know english word for "aileron")
The English word for "aileron" is........ "aileron"!!
Many English aircraft terms are borrowed directly from the French:
Empennage
Fuselage
Sesquiplane
Monocoque
Etc.
Cheers

Good evening to all,
More thanks Bo. ;)
An entire afternoon working on the bench, nothing better. ;D
So, let me introduce Mister Bigwings:
(http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/09/13/140913073309479771.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140913073309479771.jpg)
As I said, there are about 3 mm between aileron and the central section. So I decided to hide it with an alu strip, exactly like the real plane (this is an idea of Wingmaster, a french magazine).
(http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/09/13/140913073539310898.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140913073539310898.jpg)
To flatten alu, copper etc, I use a piece of tiles and a wood roller:
(http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/09/13/140913074052708232.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140913074052708232.jpg)

Then, with a toothpeek, I copy corrugated alu:
(http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/09/13/140913074248921789.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140913074248921789.jpg)
And barbatruc !!!

So, the second point of "disagreament" ;D
The gap between lower wing and fuselage:

No choice, I presented the..."instrument"... ;D

I worked...

rather ugly.
Evergreen and mastic were my friends:

Alain,
Very nicely done work with the aluminum foil, and a beautiful job so far, it's definitely going to be a winner!
Keep up the great work.

Good evening to all,
More thanks for your kind words. :)
You know what ?.... ;D I'm reading for painting...

What's wrong with KitRookie? (check the right answer ;D)
1 - He gets mad
2 - He listens "Painted in black"
3 - He's colorblind
4 - There's no more green paint in the stock
So, I give you a clue:

To be continued.... 8) 8)
Best regards.

Hello to all,
I started paint with the upper surfaces green (only on metallic part).
After Tamyia XF 71, I used lighter color (adding tan deck) for middle of surface and darker color (XF 67) on rivets line.
(http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/09/24/140924032229235093.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140924032229235093.jpg)
Of course, result is very contrasted. So, several voiles (curtains ?) of diluted XF 71.
(http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/09/24/140924032520805454.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140924032520805454.jpg)
(http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/09/24/140924032729747249.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140924032729747249.jpg)
(http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/09/24/140924032759656340.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140924032759656340.jpg)
Then, with tooth pick, scalpel and 120 buffer I did scuffing. And, the secret touch...I polishes paint with a smooth piece of cotton (truely, an old
underpants... ;D but clen of course....).
Look:
(http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/09/24/140924033443800499.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140924033443800499.jpg)
To compare:

Whole upper wing:

Now, I'll take care of the canvas parts.
Best regards.

Beautiful pre shading and paintwork!

Those wings look superb! The corrugation and riveting just cries out for weathering and you've hit a home run with this.

It willbe interesting to see if you can achieve the same result with the purple colour.
Stefan

Beautiful shading mate - I really like it!
-
Hello to all,
Thanks a lot. Sorry Stephan, no purple, I choose the first color scheme, 100/17 during 1917.
So, I paint the canvas parts. I worked a tan deck color base. As usual, strong contrasts.

Then, XF 71 thin passage and usual work with light and dark shading.

Paints I used :

No scuffing this time but weathering with oil paints (armored technic with color points of paint pulled with a brush).
In this regard, do you know the Bruno Pautigny's work ?

Hello to all,
Thanks a lot. I'm happy seeing you agree my work. Lukas, I choose especially this scheme to progress in painting. I learn with lot of friends because each of them has a special touch. I keep one which is in my sensivity and I do synthesis of all. I have to progress still, as you see I don't control aerograph as well as I want.
Watching your work, I'm sure it will be. ;)
Best regards.

Really nice done and helpful for me. I am looking forward next stages.

Hello to all,
So, I tried weathering with oil paints. But, I'm always in a research way.
I put points of paint:
(http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/09/30/140930111428233951.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140930111428233951.jpg)
Then, I pull it with a white spirit soaked brush:
(http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/09/30/140930111709554605.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140930111709554605.jpg)
It give some chromatic variations but, this time decals didn't react as usual. So, I'll use something else.
For under blue parts, this technic is too much and the result is rather ugly (especially blue paint). I should hide it with AK pigments. :-\
(http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/09/30/14093011202027199.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/14093011202027199.jpg)
In fact, I'm not at ease with a time limit. I do not it again.
Best regards.
Alain.

I like the results very much! It reminds me a Little of Verlindens old method for weathering aircraft. Looking great in my opinion.

Very nice effect with the dot method . Don't see this being applied to aircraft modeling by many . Looking forward to your next up-date

Hello to all,
Here we are, the show is tomorrow and J1 is nearly finish. Adjustements and upper wing position were a hard battle... :o

So, I have still a little work on it (a bit of weathering and rigging).
Best regards.
Alain.

Looking very good - what a beast of a aircraft!
For the spot-oil weathering, do you coat the surface first with an acrylic clear?

Great build and painting Alain.

Outstanding ! I am impressed by your weathering techniques and will try a few myself! Beautiful Results all around!!
RAGIII

Fantastic work. Really like your weathering.
James
-
hello to all,
More thanks for your kind words. :)
Petrov, I don't use clear because of troubles I had but, now, I think they were due to my lack of experience. By looking at the picture, you can see that I don't always control weathering effects. Paint, especially Tamyia paint, "drink" white spirit. On canvas, it could be interesting but on metal parts, it couldn't. On the next one (a buddy for D XII... ;)), I'll try to clear metal part to get exactly that I want.
To resume, I think I don't work with a time limit anymore because I had to skip some mistakes, decals silvering for example. But, it was a real pleasure to share with you. :D
Best regards.
Alain.
