Title: A sad day for motorsport lovers
Post by: Tony Haycock on September 05, 2014, 08:39:39 PM
I am sure I am not the only motorsport lover on the forum, and today is a sad one in our world.

Earlier today my great mate and one of the founding directors of the McLaren Formula One team, Eoin Young passed away. He also had more than a passing interst in aviation and was fascinated by my WNW models. He has suffered from failing health in the past few months, but as recently as Wednesday he was up for lunch and motorsport chat our local pub.

His passing will leave a huge gap in my life. He would, for reasons which I could never fathom, navigate for me in all sorts of vehicles in all sorts of events, so far removed from his passion of motorsport but I feel so lucky to have been allowed into his world, which opened so many doors for me.

A famous name in motorsports for sure, I knew of him as a writer and journalist and wasn't even aware of his McLaren connection. His James Hunt book is a classic.

Very sad to hear he is gone. Sounds like you had a wonderful friendship, that is something to cherish....

The loss of a good friend is as hard as the loss of a family member. Many condolences to you and his family.

Thanks everyone for your messages!

His funeral is Saturday and I have the privilege of driving his ashes to the ceremony in a Grand Prix Bugatti. A sad day but I am certainly looking forwad to the drive...

Nice! I've ridden as a passenger in a Type 35 for a few laps around the Milwaukee Mile, and even that was a thrill. A fitting conveyance for your friend, I'd say.

I'm saddened to hear of Mr. Young's passing. I recall reading his very interesting and entertaining columns in Road and Track magazine.

Just saw the message.

I'm a big motorsport fan and the passing of Mr. Young is a very sad moment.
But his books will remain with us.

The final ride for Eoin S Young, journalist, historian, author and good mate. And his final favour to me was for four days the Bugatti was in my garage (when I wasn't drivng it)!
