Title: Wingnut Wings' Junkers J.1
Post by: fredjocko on August 05, 2014, 01:51:36 AM
Hi:

I have not been modeling much since the winter of 2012 and a couple of moths ago I felt the desire to not only build a model; but to actually complete one. I saw an advertisment of the Wingnut Wings' Junker J.1 at the Wellington Model Expo and thought it was a very striking scheme and said that looks cool! I don't know if Wingnuts will ever do those markings; but it definitely  looks different.

I made the base with a grass mat called Model Scene Gass Mat glued to a wood base. They make several varieties and there are in 7" X 11" pieces and are supposed to be stretched and glued to a base for a railroad. The mat easily stretches to to fit an
8 1/2" X 12" wood base and just glue down with white glue. I painted the top of the base with brown and green paint before covering and I sprinkled some ground cover to fill in any gaps.

I didn't do a build log or in progress shots, I just wanted to actually build something; so here she is.

The inspiration

The plane

I tried something that Bertl did with the rear machine gun mount on his HB W.29. I didn't add the chain; but I like the offset of the handle and I added a wingnut

I used Aviattic's 5 color lozenge and it looks really nice; but I need more practice. It is not very forgiving if you make a mistake

Though I do not particularly like this aircraft, your model is truly spectacular. Very fine modelling all around!

For someone who has not completed a model for two years I can only stand aghast. This is incredible workmanship and modelling of a very high standard indeed. Many congratulations and I hope that you go on to build more and share them with us.

I'll be honest, Carl - this plane looks a big ugly brute to me, but you have really done justice to this kit resulting in a grand job!

What will you be having a go at next, mate?

Regards

Dave

Thank you Terri and Dave. I'm doing a Fokker D.VII as a USMC advanced trainer in the Group Build.

Really well done model, Carl.  The Junkers isn't one of my favourite aeroplanes, but
having said that, I can see the talent shown in your model. Great job. :D

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hello Carl:

Nicely done J1.  It sort of grows on a person and you have done an excellent job of helping it grow on me.  I like the use of the lozenge.  Hard to see where you had any problems with it.   Looking forward to seeing your DVIIF in USMC markings progress in the GB.

Best

Mark

Hi:

Thank you Rick, Ernie, Lance and Mark for the nice comments. It is an ugly plane, but none were shot down by groundfire. You can see why Junkers used the corrugated aluminium in their future projects. It does kind of grow on you after a while.  :)

Thanx,
Carl
