I am beginning Special Hobby's Morane Saulnier Type N and sadly the kit is lacking the Factory emblem from the side of the cowl. If I remember correctly someone was making decals of the emblem a couple of years ago. Any one remember who made them? I know Tom's Model Works make brass ones, but I'd prefer a decal.
Thanks,
Sean

toms modelworks has 1/32 photoetch morane logos.

Sean.
I had a lead from a person who made the decals but it was back in 2011, I tried to contact him but his email address is no longer valid, I will keep trying to see if I can find him because his decals were very good.

Des,
I would appreciate that, though it doesn't sound promising. I could get the photo-etch, but then I'd have to paint the background color within the emblem and I'm not steady enough with a brush.

Don't need to be steady, just fill in the recesses, let dry and polish the paint off the high spots using fine abrasive and a light touch....
-
i was about to post how i did mine but bo beat me to it. thats all you gotta do. try to paint the blue background but if you get a bit of paint on the m/s then buff it with a super fine sanding stick or sanding pad like 3000 to 4000 grit and it shines the brass as it removes the odd splotch of paint. easy
-
Thanks, I 'll go for the brass.
-
I'll take mine in vinyl ;)

Very nice Bob, can you do that in 1:32 scale and in gold (brass) ;) :)

With all the talent that is being displayed on the forum is there someone out there who can design and print the MS logo in 1:32 scale in a brass colour on clear decal paper. If anyone can do this please contact me so we can work out a deal.
Des.
-
Des,
Do you know the size of the original? If so, I can shrink my one down, colour it to something similar to brass and have a go at printing.
Cheers,
Bob
-
Thanks Bob. I estimate that the size of the logo is 5.25mm in diameter (in 1:32 scale). If someone has one of Tom's Modelworks PE logo maybe they could measure it for a comparison.

Hi Des,
I tried and I failed to get the resolution required to print a clean logo.
We need someone to produce in etch brass ;)

I can make the decals when I get home next week, if vB will share his vector art

Hi Bo,
I have exported the vector logo to PDF. You should easily be able to trace in your vector program of choice.
Attached to this post ;)
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Bob
P.S. A resize will be required :)

Okey dokey...

Bo, I'd like a set of decals in 1/32 when you get them made if possable. Thanks for your efforts. I'm sure there are a few people who would like these.

Hello,
I think some easy 3D print solutions could help here :
https://www.shapeways.com/creator/2dto3d#landing
just draw the Morane Saulnier logo with the correct size you need, send it to shapeways or other 3D online service. The best option is to extrude the logo by choosing the depth. Then at home cut it and sand it into the good thickness.
This could be helpful since there is no knowledge in 3D software needed here...

Duh, I forgot about this.
What is the finished diameter supposed to be?
Colors?
(Sorry, I have very little MS reference material )

I think a 1/32 MS logo is too small for Shapeways to model. I have already sent them some files to print in "ultra detail" polymer and, while the results are pretty good, they can not model some of the smaller details. Until better 3D printing technology becomes available (well... it is available righ now, but at astronomical prices...), the best solution for the MS logo would be photo etching.
-
Beto thanks for your feedback.
I have some airfoil to print with them ( my Bucker in progress - photos in my presentation ) and hope they will do the job.
Agree with you : the best way is probably PE.

The finished size is approx 5.25mm and the colour would be brass.

Thanks -- I see you already gave the size :-[
brass on the inside as well? (somehow got the idea the inside was painted some color...)
-
The few that I have seen show the inside colour as a sky blue, this against the black engine cowl looks pretty good, this is the colour I used on my model. But I have also seen some reproductions done with a red background, so it is probably one of those questions that has no positive answer. I suppose the logo could be left as a clear background so the engine cowl colour would then become the background colour.

Second that...absolutely....count me in...and thanks for starting this, Sean. I have the Bullet going as well. -M

And me please!
Got the Special Hobby RFC kit a couple of days - very nice.

I didn't realize the emblem was brass colored with the inside the color of the cowling. That would be very tricky to produce with a home brew decal.
About the only solution I can offer is a black overlay to apply to a gold painted disc on the cowling. The black decal would simulate the 'negative space" of the logo -- the black cowling showing thru as it were.
Not a perfect solution but all that is really practical without being able to print white. The other solution available would be to print them on white film, but them two drawbacks appear-- the "brass color" will look very fake, and I am afraid a white circle surrounding the decal on the edges would be very difficult to avoid.
I am going to be making some decals for Bertl in the next week or so, so I will give solution a a shot, but no big promises yet
-
I am able to print decals in a gold foil that is not too far off a metallic brass on my ALPS printer....
I would be willing to run some of these if you do not find a workable solution.

There you go. I don't have an ALPS -- as far as I can work out they are no longer being made(?)
-
Yep - ALPs is long gone - pretty sure another company was making their later model printer until a couple years ago but now I think the only option is used.
very handy for printing white and metallic decals - praying mine lasts forever... :)
-
Thanks Bo for all the effort and time you have put into these little decals, but it appears that petrov27 has the solution.
Des.
-
Yep I agree Des :)
Found a link for used and NOS ALPs printers -- used start around $1600, NOS around $2600.

-
Thanks Bo for the link, but at those prices I think I will stay with my little ink jet printer, it does everything I want it to do. If petrov27 wants to contact me via email or message maybe we can work out a deal for some printed sheets of the MS logo decals.

Yeah spending over a grand seems pretty hard to justify for printing a few decals. Plus you are buying something with grey market support at best.
I am curious how well decals printed with these things come out though. I'd love to see some samples.
-
Well, I spent well under under that for a new in box ALPS printer that must have been hidden in some warehouse for many years - I got lucky.
As far as examples, the gold emblem on the SSDIII and the LO!, tail chevron and Du Doch Nicht on the Udet plane are decals done on a ALPS*

*I didnt have my ALPS yet, but another (Fireball Modelworks) who prints with an ALPS ran them for me...
-
Just to let you know that I have a photo etched brass 1/32nd scale MS logo in the "works" and I should receive them next week. It is etched to 2 thousandths of an inch or 0.05mm thick, which equals 1.6mm in full scale and is a perforated etch with no backing (unlike the Toms Modelworks emblem, which has a half-etched background) and will have rivet attachment detail. They will sell for £1.50 a pair plus shipping - probably best to order with decals, in which case they will be effectively post free. I'll post photos of the finished article with a couple of other etched "goodies" on the Pheon forum here and on the website, just as soon as I have them to hand.
Hope you don't mind this post here Des, but I wanted people to know that it was coming, given that a decal might be also available soon. Some will prefer a decal, no doubt but it would be best to know that there is a choice.
All the best
Rowan

You beauty!
GrahamB
-
No problems Rowan, it is good to know that there will be PE logos available along with the decal logo being prepared by Patrick, I know that a lot of modelers don't like using PE so the decal will be a great option for them. Looking forward to seeing what your PE sets turn out like, I will be keeping an eye open on your shop for any further developments.
Des.

Excellent! ;D
-
Decal or brass, I'll take both.
Sean

Production of the decals is now in the final stages, so it won't be long before they will be available, and from what I have seen so far they look great.
Des.
-
The Morane Saulnier type N MS logo decals have now been printed and are heading my way by post. I will be sending these out to anyone who would like them to anywhere in the world. Could you please PM or email me your full postal address if you would like the decals posted to you.
Many thanks to petrov27 for all his efforts and time to make these decals and then to send them to me at no charge.

Beautiful, Petrov27! When I posted my question I never thought someone would come up with something this nice. Thank you.
Sean
-
The decals have arrived at my place so I can now post out the pre-orders. If anyone else would like a set of these decals please contact me and I will post them out to you.
Sean - your long awaited decals are in the mail heading your way, I'm sure you will be very pleased with them.
My many thanks to Petrov27 for going to a lot of trouble and effort to produce these wonderful decals, they will certainly make the Morane Saulnier Type N very attractive.
Des.
-
With the large number of decals that I have sent out so far can the forum members expect to see an influx of Morane Saulnier type N builds happening soon :) :) ;)
Des.
-
Thank you Des,
I will post pictures of my already finished Morane with the new decals. This is great. I may have to get the British boxing too.
Sean
-
Des, got my decals today and they look great! Thanks for sending 4, I intend on building the British version too. Here's my Morane N with the new decals. Sorry about the quality of the pics. It just didn't look right without the Morane Saulnier emblem.

Hi Guys,
I'm Marcel from the Netherlands. Modeller for years but new to ww1 modelling.
And guess what my first ever ww1 kit is the Special hobby Morane Saulnier in 1/32.
I was looking around on this forum and found this thread about the Morane.
I was hoping that somebody still ha's some Morane Saulnier 1/32 scale emblems left.
If somebody still has them I'm really interested. Sorry for using this old thread, if not allowed please let me know.
Thanks,
Marcel
-
Marcel,
These are the ones I've used. They are just what you need.

Yep, using those for my build.

have fun, it's a neat kit.

Thanks Guy's,
Somehow the link doesn't work from my computer (Netherlands)
I've seen your build Ryan, really inspiring!
Is there an other retailer who sells them?
-
Have you tried EBay?
-
Yep, no luck so far.
-
Another alternative, although you will not get the relief a PE piece gives you is the Begemot decal sheet for the MS. It has two decals representing the MS emblem.
