Title: Pfalz D.XII "Some assembly required"
Post by: Lyle on May 24, 2012, 03:59:01 AM
Hello guys,

Newbie to this fine forum and also getting back into plastic after a few years of spinning wheels with radio control.  I've discovered the incredible WNW kits (known about them since day 1, but only bought my first one recently) and was thrilled with the Pfalz D.XII.

I saw a great photo of a D.XII being unloaded from a railcar, and thought it'd be a great subject for a little dio, so here's my attempt on the model--had to cut the bottom wing panels off and fill in any crevices with putty.  Now, that was hard to do seeing the quality, but it's all for a good cause.  Decals from Pheon Models of the Jasta 77b Pfalz with a Mercedes star.

As for the rest of it, I need to get the figures in various poses hauling this plane, either out of a railcar or putting the tailskid onto a suitable automobile's back.  Railcars seem to be only in 1/35 that could be modified, although they are all 3rd Reich equipment.  Then again, I already have the old Minicraft kit of the 1913 Mercedes Torpedo...

Thanks for any comments or ideas--Lyle

  Lyle.
Your Pfalz D.XII fuselage looks excellent my friend. That's a fantastic idea for a diorama too, looking forward to seeing it all unfold.
Highest Regards.

What a great idea Lyle, this will be a very interesting dio. The building and painting of your Pfalz is brilliant, what did you use for the tarp over the engine and cockpit, it looks very realistic.

Outstanding Lyle. Excited to see another dio underway and with the story line you're going to present. Looking forward to following along and learning all I can about story lines and the construction of dioramas.

The more we have of these the better IMO.  ;D

Anyway, build on mate. Looking great already. "Thumbs up"

Paddy

Thanks, Des!  For the tarp I used facial tissue and acrylics--toilet tissue is absolutely useless. The results were far better than I anticipated.  I'll detail it better in another post.
I loved what you did with that 1911 Packard, it certainly has given me a lot of ideas in detailing that 1913 Mercedes.

A great start to your dio Lyle, an interesting little storyline, will you be putting the wings alongside the fusilage or getting rid of them altogether?

Lyle, the tarp has an excellent scale drape and feel! Beautiful work so far!

Thanks guys for the encouragement--I WILL finish this dio!  I tend to get 75% into a project and then lose interest.  Is there medicine for that??   :)

Pete, I am not planning on using the wings, at least not all of them.  Don't know yet where I am going with it.

Here's a shot from the other side showing how the tarp draped over the exhaust...kinda effective.

The draping effect you got on that tarp is superb Lyle ;)
The technique you used (and described in another thread) is quite clever!

Thank you Andrew and Pete!  I'm very pleased that it's pretty versatile which means it's re-positionable in case you don't like it (or want to see the innards once more).

Brilliant work on the tarp Lyle, it would have to be the most realistic looking tarp I have ever seen, it's hard to believe it is a piece of tissue paper.

   Lyle,
Excellent old Revell Highway Pioneer Mercedes Torpedo my friend. Love those old 1/32 scale cars.

Thank you Gregory for your kind words--I always appreciate your encouragement.

It came as a reissue with three other cars--a Model T, a Stutz Bearcat and a Rolls Royce! I also have an original issue kit but it's plastic seems so different from today--I'd be afraid to ruin it.

Best, Lyle

   Lyle,
It's great to have another old car kit fan here my friend. You're right about the plastic from the originals, the stuff is very brittle ,hard to cut and very prone warpage.  I built the Renault Towne  Car awhile back but I used the MiniCraft repop instead of the original issue. Converted it into an Airfield Truck for part of of a diorama.

Thanks all!
I'm in need of figures that are in various poses of working--I'd like to have a few guys helping to hold the rear fuselage up and also guys kneeling down.  I've never worked with figures before so I'm in new territory here.

Anyway, here is what I am planning on doing with the Pfalz and Mercedes Torpedo. Car is there to haul the fuselage back the short distance to the airfield for assembly.  I'm going to show it's just been offloaded by having some track as part of the base, and only imply a railcar is nearby.

  Lyle,
Sounds like it's a good time to learn a little figure conversions my friend. Your diorama plan sounds excellent and I' looking forward to watching it all come together for you.

From what I've seen in the past Lyle, working on figures is a different ball game altogether.

Cheers

I'm checking into Scale Link figures since they're pretty economical for my budget.  Since this is my first one, I'm going to be less ambitious and do something with less figures.
You're right Pete, this whole figures world is a completely different kettle of fish.  :)
Thanks, Lyle

I have the book 'Painting Miniatures' by Danilo Cartacci  what this guy can do is mind blowing.

Cheers
