Ruston Proctor, the Lincoln company who were more famous for building excavators, steam traction engines and railway locomotives, built hundreds of B.E.2c and over a thousand Sopwith Camels and 4000 aero engines during the war...
Detail of company trade mark transfer - Lincoln Imp with wings:

Thanks Squiffy for posting the images, I was unaware of the Ruston company involvement with the WW1 aviation industry.

I first read about it in a book about the company's history. Their 1000th aircraft was a Camel that was painted in a special colour scheme and went on a tour to gain publicity for the company and, I believe, to help sell War Bonds.
Apparently the B.E2 in which Leefe Robinson shot down the first Zeppelin over England was built by Rustons.

I have seen images of this Camel before but now I can make the connection, thank you for posting this interesting topic.
Here is a link that shows more images of the 1000th Ruston Sopwith Camel.

Thanks for posting that link, Des. I'd like to do a model with that paint job but it's probably way beyond my ability.
