Hi everyone,
Work has been keeping me pretty busy but I've been able to check in everyday to see what's happening. There are some fine and inspiring builds going on here and I was missing the model room so I pulled a 1/72 kit out of the stash to jump into and do a quick build.
The resin in this kit is really great. I think the only thing I'll replace are the struts. I've spent a couple of days on the interior and added some Tom's Modelworks German Interior and Eduard Seatbelts photoetch along with some instrument guages from the spares box.

Next I'll work on the engine.
Thanks for looking in,
Mark

Hello Mark:
It looks like you are making quick work of this. The interior looks the business and will certainly look great once completed. It sure is tiny isn't it?
Looking forward to seeing you progress through the build.
Best
Mark
-
Mark,
Very quick and Outstanding work on the innards! I had to double check the scale as I really thought it was 1/48th not 1/72nd!
RAGIII
-
Lovely work on the interior Mark, the small scale is not evident with the fine workmanship you are applying, well done.
Des.
-
Beautiful work done in difficult scale.
I will follow further progress.
Greetings.
Jacek
-
Thanks for the kind words Mark, Rick Des, and Jacek. I was looking over the wings and tail and I've decided to separate the control surfaces and use the 1/72 Aviattik lozenge decals and I'll have some more pictures soon.
Mark
-
Will be following along with your progress Mark which is shaping up nicely so far . :)
Terri
-
Lovely work on the interior Mark, the small scale is not evident with the fine workmanship you are applying, well done.
Des.
I agree completely with Des, Mark! Especially on the variation in wood tones. Hard to do in 1/48 scale.
Cheers,
Bud
-
another very interesting toopic to follow, shoiwng a master working on his new piece of art.
Keep up the good work!
-
What a super start you've made here, Mark. The interior really looks the part.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Thanks Terri, Bud, Sasho and Nigel! I appreciate you looking in on my build, this is a really fun little kit.
I've separated the ailerons and elevaltor. The ailerons needed some sanding and filler but that was about all.
I did a little painting on the Benz engine but I wasn't happy with the molding of the rocker arms so I sanded them off.

More soon,
Mark

Mark,
Really good, detailed work in small scale - coming along great so far.
Regards
Dave
-
Great work so far Mark, especially on the interior. Where do the instrument decals come from?
Ian
-
Thank you Dave!
@ Ian - I'm not sure where those decals came from Ian. Most likely some 1/72 Fokker and Nieuport decal sheets. I bought a big collection of decals on Ebay a few years ago and they were in there.
Mark
-
Mark,
Incredible interior detail work for 1:72 Scale! It never ceases to amaze me how you "Braille Scale Guys" just keep getting better and better. Very nice work, looking forward to following more.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Looking forward to seeing how you do the rockers :)
Terri
-
You have me captivated Mark with the work you have done on the engine so far, by sanding off all the rocker arm assembly detail has now got me very intrigued on how you are going to replace them, it is hard enough doing that in 1:32 scale let along in this tiny 1:72 scale, please keep us updated.
Des.
-
You are moving right along Mark! Looking forward to that engine work!
RAGIII
-
Looks great, Mark! The interior is a winner. Can't wait to see it all done up :) :)
Cheers,
Dan
-
An exellent work about the interior Mark.
Martin

Many thanks Lance, Terri, Des, Dan and Martin.

Des.
Me too Des! The engine rocker arms show prominently on the model so I wanted to make sure to "give them the business" too. :)
Speaking of the engine, I was having a little trouble getting the engine aligned and seated high enough on the kit formers so I used some Apoxysculpt and made a little bed for it to sit in and positioned the engine properly as the Apoxysculpt set up.
My intentions were to take the engine and Apoxysculpt out so I could insert it back in after working on the engine but I got called out to work and forgot so it's in there permanently now. :o No problems though, at least it is in position and more than steady enough to work on.
I need to check a few more things and I'll close up the fuselage.
Mark
-
The fuselage is closed up now and I've started work on the cabane struts. the kit struts look a little thick to me........
.........so I'll replace them with some profiled strut material I have on hand...........
The fuselage has no place to install the cabane struts so I drilled and carved the spots needed. Here's one..........
All of the strut locating points are drilled out on the wings now............
Not very pretty yet but it's coming along................
Mark
-
I've pinned the lower wings................
I use graph paper to straighten the fuselage and wings.................
A little bend gives an approximate dihedral of the lower wing.................
Usually, when I attach the lower wings, I attach one wing (in this case the left or port wing) then drill the other side (starboard side) to match it. Here you can see how may times I had to try to get it right.....................
If it didn't line up I inserted a plastic "plug" of round styrene and glued it securely with Superglue and hit it with Insta-Cure and drilled again.
more soon and thanks for checking in,
Mark
-
This is really impressive. I have never worked with a resin kit but you are making it look so easy - sure sign of a master at work. Interesting to see that you have alignment problems too!
-
Mark a very great build until now.
Martin
-
Thanks guys! :D
-
Looking good Mark!
Ian
-
Thanks Ian! I was looking at the front of the plane while typing and mixed them up... :o I remember when I was young and Dad saying just remember that "left" and "port" have 4 letters. I fixed them in the post.
Mark
-
Looking good. I'm amazed at you fellows who can model such a small kit and still add so much detail. Very nice indeed.
James
-
Thanks James :D this is definitely a fun little kit!
I've made a jig so I can start making the struts....................

more soon,
Mark
-
Jeez Mark, your jig looks better than the models I build!
Cheers,
Chris
-
That is a complex jig…. I usually put on the struts and then the top wing and line up both with blocks!
-
OOOoo that jig, please next build, share the build of the jig itself! I particularly wonder, how you glue the pins on which the upper wing lays? Does this question makes sense?
-
Just catching up with your build, Mark -
Impressive stuff, mate! Your wing jig is very clever work.
Regards
Dave
-
Mark,
When I see how real modelers handle stuff like this jig I realize just how much of an Assembler I really am. Extremely well though out plan and jig!
RAGIII
-
Thanks guys! The jig was actually very easy to construct. Here's how I did it.
I went into my spare styrene box and found a nice thick, flat piece to make the square base to attach the wing supports. Everything came from spare styrene or round styrene stock.....
I checked the stagger from a bottom view of the datafile drawing................
Then I drew the fuselage and top and bottom wing lines on the base with a pencil........................
I lined the bottom wing and fuselage up with the pencil marks and put 4 pieces of round styrene at mid and front fuselage so the fuselage couldn't move around while I was working on the wings. Then I placed 4 pieces of round styrene along the lower wing leading edge and straightened them with a metal ruler..........
I cut some pieces for the upper wing supports from my spares and made the correct 90 degree angles........
A longer piece of round stock is glued to the upper wing support to hold the top wing, nothing fancy.
I used a piece of spare styrene and marked the leading and trailing edges of the top wing from the scale drawings with a pencil and adjusted the upper wing supports as the glue dried................
I checked everything when it was about dry to make any minor adjustments but that was about it.
I think it took about 3 to 5 minutes to complete. Very low tech. :D

Hello Mark. Thanks for yet another super tutorial. I'm really enjoying the build and learning so much from it.
Best wishes

Nice job with the jig Mark !
Terri
-
The LVG is shaping up very nicely Mark and the jig is terrific, well done.
Des.

Very interesting seeing how the magic is made. Amazing work on such
a small scale. Your talents and ingenuity are such fun to follow, Mark.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Many thanks Nigel, Terri, Des and Ernie! :D
I've had time today to cut and finish the hinges on the wing and tail........

Hi
Great project that somehow I missed until now.
Very impressive craftsmanship.
Very good piece of tail and wing, in my favorite scale.
I'll keep an eye forward to the next posts.
Best Regards
Hristo
-
Looks realy good love your updates Mark.
Martin
-
Thanks Hristo and Martin. I'm really enjoying this kit. I'll definitely be building more Ardpol kits in the future.
Mark
-
Nice work on the wings and control surfaces Mark! Looks really terrific.
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick!
-
Mighty ingenious, Mark. I go away on vacation and look at all this activity!
Nice progress...
Dan
-
Nice hinge detail Mark ! 8)
Terri
-
Thanks Dan and Terri! I appreciate you looking in on my build!
The tail was not plumb installed without modification so I had to add a few pieces of plastic to get everything aligned properly......
Time for some puttying! I'll also have to mark out and paint the wooden part of the tail that is not represented on the tail piece. Here is the tail of my LVG so you can see the wooden part i am talking about....
more soon,
Mark
-
A wonderful work Mark.
Martin
-
Thanks Martin! It's always great to hear from you!
I've finished filling and puttying the gaps around the tail and I brushed a coat of Mr Surfacer 500 to check for any problems. All OK now.
I've added top wing trailing edge stops and end stops to the jig to hold the top wing in place so it won't move around while I make the struts.
Cabane struts are just about done and everything is lining up very well. There will be one more connecting strut to add to each side of the cabane struts but right now I'm only worried about the weight bearing struts.
I've made one wing strut from brass Strutz material. You can see there is an inward cant to the struts. The LVG struts were straight so I'll have to relocate the strut holes in the bottom wing.
that's all for today, more soon,
Mark
-
May i dare give you a little tip, to avoid this problem? Tape the wings together in correct position, then drill up through the bottom wing into but not all the way into the top wing and you will have corresponding holes, works for rigging to!Sorry to be so presumptuous.
-
Many thanks for the tip. I always try to find new ways of doing these things.
As it sits, all I have to do is to relocate the strut holes a few millimeters inward and I'm done, no need to drill any holes through the wings at this point. The rib detail on the wings is very fine so I don't want to do a lot of sanding on them, so everything I've done to this point is to save the wing detail.
Mark
-
Really starting too come together now Mark and super job on the tail !
Terri
-
Mark,
fantastic work! The fuselage and tail assembly work is well done. The continued work with the self made jig continues to amaze me!
RAGIII
-
Not a lot of time to model but here is the progress so far. The Aviattic Decals are awesome to work with and look great in 1/72, many thanks to Richard! Almost ready to mount the top wing.

Mark you have it very nice done with the Lozenge.
Martin

That really is looking good!
Love your light wood tone effect.

Thanks guys, I know the pictures aren't very good. My camera broke and I'm using a loaner. I'll have good finished build pics.
Mark

Your little LVG is looking spectacular Mark, the fuselage colour and decals turned out excellent and the lozenge is perfect, looking forward to seeing the top wing mounted.
Des.
-
Mark,
Looking absolutely stunning! I wish my pictures were that bad!
RAGIII
-
Thanks guys, I found out I need to refine the front cabane struts just a little then I can finish her up. All other parts, ailerons, elevator and undercarriage are ready to go on once the top wing is in place.
Mark

Hi everyone,
The build is finished and pictures are posted here:
