Title: Hello from Northamptonshire
Post by: Skids on June 09, 2014, 06:57:16 AM
Hello all

My name is Simon, I am 42 and from Northamptonshire. I got back into modelling a few years ago, after a rather long break from the hobby (about 20ish years). I have been building WW2 and modern aircraft up to now but after a few years of this I have decided to try WW1 as I have always loved this era (ever since playing Knights of the Sky on my brothers Amiga many moons ago).

I think it has taken me all this time to pluck up the courage to have a go at that scary thing called rigging, but after looking round the internet and watching you tube vids it doesn't seem that scary anymore.

I am not a quick builder (average of 1 kit every 6 months), but am looking forward to having a go. My first kit has arrived and it's a Wingnut Wings Pfalz D.llla, now I am looking at all the aftermarket stuff.

Hopefully I will start  this soon, but in the meantime I will look round this site and pick up all t he tips I can.

Thanks
Simon

Welcome aboard, Simon!  Glad you found us.  A 20 year hiatus seems to be about the average around here, so you'll be right at home.  You picked the perfect first WWI build.  As Lance said, the Pfalz D.IIIa is a brilliant kit and the rigging is fairly simple.  I look forward to seeing your build.
Cheers,
Bud

Hello Simon and welcome to this wonderful forum. I'm sure that you'll find lots to inspire and help you with the Pfalz.

Whereabouts are you in Northamptonshire? Before moving on, we lived for a number of years in East Hunsbury and then in the delightful village of Collingtree, just outside Northampton. Do you happen to know if the model shop still exists on the Wellingborough Road, on the right as you move out of town?

Best wishes
Nigel

Nigel, I live in Rushden which is about 15 miles from Northampton. The  Model Shop is still there, I go over a few times a year.

Thanks

Hi Simon ... and "Welcome", from another slow builder. I know Rushden - (ish), I've done a couple of gigs over there (Lectures).

I recommend you actually take your time and savour your first WNW's kit - they are a joy, a bit scary ... but a joy never the less.

Equally don't get too hung up on aftermarket at this stage, most of what you need is in the box, and it's amazing what you're able to produce yourself once the fog clears.

All power to your elbow bloke.

Welcome from another newbie. As you are in Northants, will you be going to Sywell on the 17th of August? http://www.sywellairshow.co.uk/

Hi Andi,

I can't help myself, I scratch build bits too so I will have some fun. Not too much AM but want to get some metal Spandau's as they look stunning.

Unfortunatly I will be away and I am gutted as both Lancasters will be there not to mention all the other great stuff. >:(

Welcome to the Forum. Sounds like you are more than ready to take on the Pfalz! That kit is high up on my list of WNW kits I want to purchase. I am looking forward to what you do with the kit!!

I will give it my best but looking at the standard on here I may fall short!

But I am going to make sure I have a lot of fun in the process (as I really want to do a DH.2 but thought maybe try something easier first  ;))

Welcome to the forum, Simon. :D I think you will be happy here as the
atmosphere is very friendly and non-judgemental.  Great place to learn
and prefect your skills with early aviation models.  I look forward to
your Pfalz build.  Good to have you aboard.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thanks guys

Got me some eyelets now (thanks Bob), but oh how small. Hmmm might have to get some new glasses!

Getting exited about this project, need to decide a colour scheme and wether to get a wooden prop from Doug Craner as they look amazing.

Also need to finish my latest project (no prop on that one) and clear the bench.
