It's been a while since I tackled a biplane so I thought I'd have a go at one with an extra wing hence my choice. ;D
I think Encore are an American company although I'm not sure. Everything seems quite tidy and and I have a choice of various markings but will probably go with those that come with the kit.
I've ordered some paint from Model Skills so hopefully this will be a better attempt than my last one. ::)

Hi Toby,
That's a nice little kit, I don't recall any major problems with it. The wing fit is a little fiddly but that's about it, and you'll need to add the small strengthening struts to the undercarriage that was typical of Jasta 2 aircraft.
I'm not sure about the recommended blue base for the upper surface streaking. I believe one or two Dr.Is were painted this way, and I have a pic of it (can't find where I got it from) which does show some very light streaks so it's possible. One thing for sure, the wing streaks ran directly fore and aft, not at an angle as shown in the instructions.
Have fun!

Toby,
Encore is a product produced by Squadron. The basic Plastic Parts are molded by Roden (Ukraine). One good thing is that Squadron supplies excellent quality decals versus the original Roden release. You should enjoy the build, and I will certainly enjoy watching!

Hope you have a great time with the build, Toby. I look forward
to seeing more of it as you progress.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hello Toby:
This looks like a great little kit. Some of the Roden Kits were pretty decent and as has been mentioned, these Encore kits are Roden molds with better decals and some resin and PE to pretty them up. I like the markings and look forward to your progress on this kit.
Best

As a matter of interest were seat belts used on these? I only ask as Ive some PE WW1 German belts and was thinking of using them.

Absolutely! Period photos often show the ends of the harness hanging over the cockpit coaming. These kites would often go inverted for one reason or another and they would surely lose their drivers were it not for seat belts.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks Bud. That's what I thought. It was probably only racing cars that didn't bother in those days :-)
-
Your more than welcome, Toby. I'm looking forward to seeing this one come together.

Initial start on the cockpit and surrounds. Belts will go on after I've done some tidying up.

I used Vallejo natural wood for the floor, Misterkit German clear doped linen for the side panels and Tamiya medium grey for the controls although I think that maybe flat aluminium may be better.
-
The instructions are far from clear as to where the cockpit floor sits but I think I've got it right.

Also the colour they depict as olive drab is not the same as the olive drab I've used before.
However I've found some details that show the olive drab on the DR1 I'm doing is very much the like the one I'm using.
The streaking is going to be fun as again they advise I use pale blue whereas the pictures I've seen on completed models and Wings Palette it looks far more like clear doped linen which would make sense in a way.
Would this be the correct way to go colour wise?

You make a very nice build and paint for that tine scale.

That looks so neat. Cant wait to see more.

Nicely done detailing so far.

I was about to say that. Moreover, Encore releases are usually slightly cheaper than Roden ones.

Nice work on the interior! Looks great!!

For those of you contemplating a DR1 in this scale try the Revell version. I just dug mine out and it looks certainly construction wise and also in some of the detail to be a better kit. The lower wings proved to be real pain as the locating tags are less than useful and took over half an hour to get right.
Anyway here we are with the middle wing just resting on the fuselage.
I also tried out my new wing holder that aids alignment which I purchased from Hannants recently on a test run.

Now for the difficult bit. The streaking of what looks like clear doped linen over the fuselage and wings. I've already tried doing a fine wash but that turned out to be a disaster as well it just washed and didn't grab to give anything like the effect I wanted.
If anyone knows of how I can get it to work then I'll be very grateful.

Your DR1 is looking quite nice. You seem to have done well with the lower wings in spite of your difficulty! As for the streaking, it would have been easier to lay down a base coat of Clear Doped Linen then drybrushed with green. As it stands You could try the opposite. IHTH,

Thanks RAG. I have come to this conclusion as well. :'(
Still it's all about learning ;)

Looking great Toby :)
I have the Eduard dual combo in this scale - the same moldings as used by Revell. The Eduard kit comes with PE and more decal options though than the Revell offering.
Looking forward to the rest of your build :)
-
This seems a bit better.

A dry fitting of the rear elevator surfaces.

Still not totally happy with the streaking but it's a lot better than what was there before.
-
Keep at it Toby, good progress so-far. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Nice update! You are making great progress on this one!

I have to say the decals with this kit are excellent. No grabbing and easy to remove from the paper.

Next on the agenda will be to finish of the decals on the fuselage and then fit the middle wing.
Could be fun :)
Also the engine has been painted

I'll weather it prior to mounting.

Your build getting better and better.

Next up is attaching the top wing and rigging.

I've been searching for a biplane jig at Hannant's recently but only found the Sram model. Which brand is that one?
-
Sram. A bit fiddly
-
Thanks. Ok, I had a feeling the model shown at Hannant's was not the same. I was thinking about buying one, rather than scratch-building jigs for each plane.
-
Great progress so far. The markings are looking great!

I would advise against tbh. Whether it's the fact it's a triplane I'm using it on for the first time but it has been a struggle to align and in the end I gave up and went back to using some Lego >:(
-
Thanks for your feedback. Moreover, the drawback with those jigs is you can't turn the model upside down while working on fitting the masts. It looks like I will go on with my custom jigs...
