Title: Roland C.II Not 50 but One of Two Shades of Grey
Post by: Captain Slower on May 13, 2014, 02:36:32 PM
As I get ready to begin a WNW Roland C.IIa, I need to make a reasonable guess as to the interior color.

My sources are: WNW instruction booklet, WS Datafile 49 and the Aeronaut Book on Roland Aircraft of WWI.

Let me begin with some observations.  Based on the factory photos, particularly the one on the bottom of page 23 of the CIIa instructions, it appears that the floor panels were put in after the sides were tacked to the frame and the structure was painted.  If you look carefully, you can see that the assemble fuselage does not have any floor panels.  My guess is that after assembly, the fuselage was spray painted on the inside and then the fittings, including the floor panels were added.  This would seem to be verified by the photos showing varnished or shellacked floorboards and control panel.  My guess is that varnished wood may take the boots and rain fall better than paint as varnish will better seal the grain.  I

Now the big question: gray or green-gray?  There is a photo #86 in WS Datafile 49, page 30 shows a crunched early sky colored CII.  There are bits of the interior surface fold over showing against the outside surface.  The color of the interior is a different hue than the pale white-blue-grey of the outside and the darker but not by much.  This photo has me leaning towards a very light green gray.

Has anyone else tried to study this?
