Hello guys,
I would like to present to you my work on my new project : diorama - Jagdstaffel 5 - Boistrancourt July 1917 . It will include three or four aircraft Albatros DV. The models are the company Eduard 1:72 scale .
Project implementation will use some photos taken in July 1917 in mansion Boistrancourt, which was the headquarters of Jasta 5 in the period 1917 -18 :

Hello Hristo.
I had to do a double take when I saw that the scale is 1/72. You have made a very accomplished start.
Best wishes

-
Superb work, Hristo! Even more amazing that you have put such
wonderful detail in the teeny scale. I look forward to the next updates.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Hristo,
Your details are worthy of praise in any scale, in 1:72 the work is exceptional!
Nice modelling, and I look forward to following your progress.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Hristo,
I admire anybody who can detail to this high standard in small scale - amazing work so far.

Amazing to see such quality work in 1/72. I wish I could make 1/32 look so good.

cool project, awesome start!

Great work Hristo, I will be watching closely.

Really great work on detailing, and on painting and weathering as well!

I think you hit a 7 instead of a 3 when stating the scale! VERY impressive work so far. Interesting to note the 2 D.IIIs in among the D.Vs....

Thanks for the kind words everyone.
And I still work ...
-
That is truly impressive work in God's Own Scale: and x4 makes it even more so. What material did you use for the seat cushions? This is something that I would like to try but have no idea as to what to use.
-
Hi lone modeller,
For the manufacture of seat cushions I used kneaded eraser (knetgummi).
It is used by artists, is soft, not dry, allowing you to shape it as you want.
That not dries can be a problem since the workpiece is not to be touched, but the scale of 1:72 is suitable .
Here's how it looks:
http://www.impresia.bg/photo.php?s=photo&id=5719
I have used more copper wire stitch and foals I imitated with medical needle.
I personally prefer to use available materials when possible instead of buying expensive modeling materials.
Otherwise can be made by specialized modeling materials: clay, or Milliput.
I hope I was helpful.
Best Regards
Hristo
-
Did I mentioned that I really like the fuel tanks? They look exactly like been repaired, taken on and off, trown around, got their nicks and kinks and installed back into the aircrafts:)
Can't wait for the next updates!

Very impressive work so far Hristo, I have a very deep admiration for those who work in 1:72 scale and for you to be doing four at the one time is amazing.

Hello Hristo:
Outstanding workmanship so far. As has been mentioned, outstanding level of workmanship in such a small scale. I had to remind myself this was 1/72nd!

Hello everyone,
I finished work on machine guns. I removed the plastic part of the cooling rack and then swapped to PE from kit.
For the preparation of the tubes used medical needles.
Base color painting with 36M of Agama, then with a dry brush moved MC 218 Gunze Mr.Metal Color.

-
Outstanding modelling especially the parts for the cockpit. Are they PE and transfers? Whatever they are they are really very good indeed. (x4)
-
Hi lone modeler
Pumps and control equipment with holder are scratch builds, the rest is PE.
They are made from materials at hand - needles, copper wires and appliances are printed.
The water pump greaser is slightly larger than it actually is, but at this scale it's kind of hard to work out the actual size
Best Regards
Hristo
-
It is an exellent work Hristo.
Martin
-
Very nice detailing. I had to do the same on the weapons of my own 1/72 D-V. I only kept the original breeches and rebuilt the rest from PE and scratch.
at this scale it's kind of hard to work out the actual size
Glad to see I'm not the only one to have this problem with 1/72 kits...Eventually, I consider this is part of their "charm": the fact that some of the smallest details have to be slightly oversized so they can be handled and remain visible.
-
Your detail in this scale is continuing to amaze me!
RAGIII
-
very , very nice work in 1/72. you could have told me it was 1/48 with all scratch interior and i would believe it.
-
Hello all.
I'm glad you like my work on the models.
Really work in scale 1:72 is quite difficult, and the fact that aftermarket of WWI models is relatively limited leads us to develop imagination in handmade details.
But that is part of the enjoyment of the hobby.
Vintsentm I follow with great interest the work on your model, and I am glad that there are others who share the pleasure of working in this scale.
Best Regards
Hristo
-
Yes, WWI birds in 1/72 scale are even more difficult than I had thought. I'm impressed with the amount of details you made on your kits. What kind of paint do you use to get so realistic effects on metal parts?
-
Hi vincentm,
For the metal parts I used Gunze MR. Metal Color paints.
Before laying them painted with black paint, preferably glossy, but and Matt is good for small details.
I work with a brush and work with these paints requires little training.
Otherwise work with airbrush far as I know are perfect.
When dry, I make oil wash.
Well it is, I hope I've been helpful.
Best Regards
Hristo
-
Fantastic work. I dont know how you can see such tiny parts. Watching with interest.
James

Before laying them painted with black paint, preferably glossy, but and Matt is good for small details.
Thanks for the explanations. I think it is the undercoat that gives such depth to your metal paints, very useful tip.
-
Hello everyone,
I finished work on the engines. By EDUARD have included only a few details for this part, which is quite a bit less, so I decided to deepen and produce miss you. I used to manufacture improvised: plastic sheets, wires and hoses. Used for painting paints Gunze Mr. Metal Color and Aquoreos Hobby Color.
So:
First plane: This plane I thought to participate in the diorama as disassembled and prepared for repair. For this purpose, the engine will be removed and placed on a stand. I worked for him and wooden frame inside the fuselage. In the production of wires to the spark plugs were a little long and may be a problem with the starting the engine :P

awesome!

Maybe you've seen this -- Deutsches Museum in Munich has a large Jasta 5 Boistrancourt diorama -- this is just a small part of it. Yours will outshine this by a mile, but maybe some inspiration?

Hello Hristo:
Truly amazing work in 1/72nd scale. The detail is outstanding. Looking forward to seeing you progress through these builds and seeing your diorama unfold.

Incredible detail on the engines.
Great choice to do Jasta 5 too, I always loved the look of those green tails.

The engines definitely don't have enough details in 1/72 Eduard kits, and it's even worse in MAC Distribution ones. I have made a silicon print of both sides of a Roden Mercedes D-III in order to cast copies for further kits.
You have added everything that is possible to add on those engines, congratulations. I just love the scratchbuilt wooden frames and the perfect fit with the engine!
-
Hello everyone,
I'm glad you like the engines.
Bo, thanks for the reference.
I'm still thinking about what to include diorama.
Your idea gives me the opportunity to reflect on the issue. ;)

Incredible work on the tiny engines Hristo, they look amazing.

very nice detail work on such a small model. i have recently bought some 1/72 models mainly of craft you cant get in larger scale.i kinda like it for a change.

Extraordinary detail work, Hristo! Far better than I can accomplish in 1/48 scale. Wow!
Cheers,

Hello everyone,
I gathered all the parts in the fuselages.
In airplanes one, three and four not met many problems, but in the second, it appeared that the frame of the engine is higher and the axis of the propeller is not in the axis of the opening.
So, I'm lost in Scratch :P.
Anyway I will try to take it off and adjust the gap.

Hristo, I cannot get over that all this wonderful work is in the teeny scale!
I can only admire the awe-inspiring detail, carried on from one model to the
next. Just superb.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

You made an exellent work Hristo. Will watch for the next.
Martin
-
I just love your attention to details in the cockpits, like stick control cables, copper surronding around the tachometer, wood effet...Really impressive when you know how small all this is.
-
Awesome work.
James
-
Absolutely amazing what you have achieved in God's Own Scale and x4 too! I have said that I will build an Airfix Albatross for a group build on another forum in August - September this year, but I could not hope to produce the amount of intricate detail that is in your models. This will be an inspiration for me and I will use this thread to help me when I do start that project. Brilliant work.
-
Dittos to all the above !!!!
-
Unbelievable work in this scale.
Thankfully I have no desire to add that kind of detail myself - if I did I might just quit now! VERY impressive!

WOW times four! Absolutely Stunning work!

Utterly mind-blowing!

-
yeah yeah yeah! All of the above. Superb!!!

This could become my favourite under construction thread. Awesome X 4.
-
Hello to all
Thanks for the kind words.
I'm glad that my project remains interested in you.
Many of the details will disappear as assemble the fuselage, but it does not bother me to do them.
However, the most important thing is to bring pleasure of hobby.
Best Regards
Hristo

Total cool and I'm blown away . Fantastic job so far on all four and for being consistent in those details :)

Yeah, Terri, good point on the consistency -- that's not easy to do in any scale.

Hello everyone,
I decided to present a diorama with action at Hangar 2. For this purpose I began to collect information on the building of the photos that I found. However, they noticed that some of the hangar is wearing some kind of material, much like canvas or perhaps sheet metal (probably lead). It comes to the front facade. The side walls are also implemented as, if similar material, but may be of wood siding. Photographs taken later showed that at the end of 1917 the building was completed in this way. For I delivered period, however, this method is partially used. For comparison Hangar 3 is made entirely above said manner.
I would like to ask you for more information if you know what exactly used in the construction of Hangar 2?
Thank you in advance.
This is a picture of the hangar from the spring of 1917:

However, they noticed that some of the hangar is wearing some kind of material, much like canvas or perhaps sheet metal (probably lead).
It certainly won't be lead! Lead is far too heavy and soft. It looks like what's commonly known as corrugated iron, which is actually corrugated steel sheet that usually has a coating of zinc (i.e is galvanised).
-
Hristo,
It's been a while since I checked on this Thread; magnificent work still! Very impressive, and the level of skill required to get results such as this in 1:72 Scale is something you can be very proud of. Nice Work!!!
Cheers,
Lance
-
They look very much like wood to me - corrugated iron would not have had such wide spacing between the vertical sections. In addition I do not think that the Central Powers had enough zinc or steel to make such buildings by 1917, so they would have used non-strategic materials instead, i.e. wood. Probabaly pine but could have been sourced locally depending upon what was growing in local woods.
-
Hello everyone,
Thank you all for your help. Squiffy you're right that the lead sheets are unlikely solution to the shell of the hangar. For corrugated steel sheet may likely solution for the area of the corner because that is used for hangar 1. This can be seen in these pictures:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p410/frameframeframe/JASTA%205/2_zps530e77d0.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/frameframeframe/media/JASTA%205/2_zps530e77d0.jpg.html)
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p410/frameframeframe/JASTA%205/1_zps91365a14.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/frameframeframe/media/JASTA%205/1_zps91365a14.jpg.html)
From this picture of Hangar 3 is evident that they used a material like cloth (perhaps pleated like oilcloth):
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p410/frameframeframe/JASTA%205/3_zps2ca27a8e.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/frameframeframe/media/JASTA%205/3_zps2ca27a8e.jpg.html)
Lone modeler you're right that the consequence of the use of sheet metal in a time of war is unlikely. Also, then they probably have used everything they have in hand. So I think I can conclude that the most likely materials used are as follows: for gable front facade is used planking and top coated fabric is applied (used later to cover the entire hangar); corners is crimped metal sheets(corrugated steel sheet); the side walls wood siding. What do you think of this definition?
lcarroll thanks for the support and encouragement.
Best Regards
Hristo
-
I think the sides of the hangar in the first photo in your previous post (the one with blocks of colour) are corrugated iron. The spacing of the verticals looks right for corrugated iron, as does the way it appears to be made of overlapping panels.
Why would corrugated iron not be used? Surely there was plenty of it about? Hundreds of thousands of sheets of the stuff were used in the trenches so I'm sure a couple of hundred could be spared to build a hangar.
-
Squiffy, I think you are absolutely right about for blue area of the first picture in a previous post, and I think that is covered with corrugated iron. What do you think that the green zone is the same?
-
It looks like a hodge podge of construction materials to me. The green portion looks like wood framing with canvas sheet as the wall material. The forward portion is most likely corrugated sheet metal. The one hangar front piece over the doors looks like overlapped wood, the other one is the framing with canvas sheet. Whatever you decide to go with, you will probably be correct as it doesn't appear as if any two hangars were built the same.
Good luck
Best
Mark
-
I completely agree with Mark's comments and I would go along with those.
-
It`s a very impressive project! I always admire poeple, who are able to superdetail 72nd scale models up to such high standards!

Hello to all
For quite time since I didn't posted in the topic, because here it is summer and I do not have much time for hobbies. Here's what I finished in short: I closed fuselages of the aircrafts and as many of the details in the cabin were scratch build that lead to the opening of large gaps that require more work. I added some additional detail on the tabs at the connection of the ailerons and elevators - they use the method of Vincent, the topic of his Albatros which offer my thanks for sharing it. Also, several control openings, drainage pipes from the underside of the fuselage, and the other photo-eched details of the set.
I put the landing gear frame and inclined leg to the upper wing.
I already have four monoplane :P.
Here are some pictures:

just seen this for the first time, wow fair play. great work ;)
-
Your attention to detail is impeccable, the hinges on the rudder, elevators and ailerons are amazing especially in such a small scale, well done.
Des.
-
Beautiful work so far, so much detail for such a small scale.
As for the hangars, there is a slightly clearer reproduction of the photo in Volume 1 of the Albatros book on Jasta 5. It looks to me that the green portion is also corrugated metal, although it's still hard to tell.
Wood or metal, I think this will make a brilliant diorama.

I am amazed every time I look at a new update at the detail you are putting into your builds! Each time I have to remind myself that this is 1/72nd!!
RAGIII

yep great stuff, well done on all counts Frame!

Your work at this scale is just stunning, Hristo.

-
This is modelling of the very highest standard x how many models? I am shortly to try to do something with the old Airfix Albatros for a GB on another site but I will not be able to produce work that is anywhere near this quality. Brilliant!
-
Thank you all for your kind words.
I am very glad that you like my work.
Best Regards
Hristo
-
I'm also in awe of your work, and can't wait to see them in flesh!
Best regards,

Hello Frame:
Outstanding workmanship all around. I would be hard pressed to believe they are in 1/72nd scale. I am looking forward to your next update.

-
The amount of detail you added to these very small models, as well as the quality of the painting, are outstanding. The final diorama will be a masterpiece.
-
Hello everyone
... continue! As I wrote in one of the above my posts, the operation of the diorama will develop in front of Hangar 2 Boistrancourt. Relying on information from the book by GK Merrill series of Windsock Datafile Special "Jagdstaffel 5" found that in this hangar were housed three Albatroses DV - Albatros DV, serial unknown, pilot: unknown, Albatros DV 2065/17, pilot: Obit. Richard Flashar, Albatros DV, serial unknown, pilot: Vzfw. Fritz Rumey:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p410/frameframeframe/JASTA%205/JAGDSTAFFEL5_ALBATROSDV_PUBLISH_128_zpsa683f6ca.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/frameframeframe/media/JASTA%205/JAGDSTAFFEL5_ALBATROSDV_PUBLISH_128_zpsa683f6ca.jpg.html)
This led to the decision to eliminate one of the planes in the diorama. I decided to send him to the service of the Jasta 37 for the needs of Ernst Udet:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p410/frameframeframe/JASTA%205/JAGDSTAFFEL5_ALBATROSDV_PUBLISH_129_zpsf3edb42b.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/frameframeframe/media/JASTA%205/JAGDSTAFFEL5_ALBATROSDV_PUBLISH_129_zpsf3edb42b.jpg.html)
Briefly what work finished on models: After final assembly, diligently washed the plastic with alcohol. Because I do not use a primer that has enormous implications for the adhesion of the paint. The next step is the application of paint. I work with brush and for this project I used paints Vallejo, of which I have very good impressions. Very well spill, cover and leave no traces of brush. As minus noticed that even sealed with varnish of Vallejo, after taking the decals, the water that has remained in them rises the paint and makes it as noodles. If any of you faced similar problem and found solutions to it I'll be giving thanks if you share. Followed by application of the decals. I used the default decals of Eduard, such as missing me for making the plane Rumey and red crest horse I print ot gelatin paper, which was very hard work. Finally, all sealed with two hands lacquer.
Here are some pictures:

most excellent modelling :) The paint looks like airbrushed and not hand brushed.

I'm mighty glad I found this. I too am building a hanger (roughly based on building #2 in your photos), and I believe the others are correct; those are overlapped corrugated metal panels on the building sides. I also now believe that the entire front of that building is covered with what appear to be vertical battens, so I'll be simulating this on my own hanger as well.

WOW!!!!! Just getting better and better!!!!! Your painting with the brush is just amazing to say the least!!!!! I am gobsmacked ??? All in 1/72nd....AMAZING work.

You've just achieved an incredible detailing level for 1/72 scale!! And the painting is particularly clean and well done. Udet's black D-V was one of my possible choices for the D-V I recently made, so I'm eager to see yours.
-
Thank you all for the kind words.
Glad you like my work on these amazing aircraft.
I started work on the black beauties of Udet.
I painted the base color and painted with white wings, with the idea to make pre- shading before laying the deck, but I still have not managed to do successfully tested it with the help of brush, so attempts in this direction continue .
For this I will be thanking you for any tips to achieve a good result.
Here are some pictures of my work so far:

Hello everyone
After a long pause, I resumed work on the diorama and that's what I did.
I started working on the hangar and some items of furniture such as tables, ladders and stands.
Used in their manufacture natural veneer of linden some balsa sheets and various sizes profils of pine timber.
I chose natural wood because I saw the easy option than trying to imitate wood in such small dislocated objects.
The dimensions on the hangar I interpolated from the photos, and I hope to be close to the truth.
Here are photos:

The next step that I think to do is to dye them with wood stain and a little oil wash where necessary.

As for shading the ribs, did you try masking the ribs with thin tape stripes and applying a slightly darker overcoat?

Thank you all for your support.
As for shading the ribs, did you try masking the ribs with thin tape stripes and applying a slightly darker overcoat?
This technique is known to me, but I don't use an airbrush, I work with brush and therefore decided to ask for a trick that can help me. Otherwise, thanks for the advice. Also I think to try the technique that you use with the help of the decal shaded when resume work on "Black Beauty"

I don't know if this will help but if using Aviattic Lozenge you can use artists oils to outline/highlight the ribs. If doing camo I am not sure of the solution.

Hello everyone!
Work on the hangar continues.
I laid several layers of stain on the wooden roof structure and assembled farms with ribs and plating.
I laid on top sheeting using aluminum foil from food box.

Aluminum foil, however, did not like galvanized steel, so I'll need to paint them.

Galvanising is bright and silvery when new but it soon dulls to a metallic grey colour. Perhaps a mixture of light grey and aluminium?

Hi Frame, Here's a corrugated iron roof I did the same way as you.I've painted it with several shades of grey and red .If you want to depict a factory fresh roof you might just leave out the rust and dry brush with gunmetal and aluminium instead.

Hello everyone!
I finished work on my hangar. For coloring а sheet metal I use a couple of washes mix with oil and acrylic paints. I'm not apply primer on the aluminum foil, which was stupid, and therefore places the paint is washed away at work, leading to repeatedly clean and start again. For gable tried to imitate coated fabric, with the help of wrapping paper of shoes box, glued on planking inside. Then painting and tinting with dry pastel. The number of hangar is made by handbrush. Doors them mounted on hinges of some fishing hose, and for my great surprise can be opened and closed.
Well that's it for now. I started working on the ground, and then resume work on airplanes.

Hristo, that is incredible work! Your hangers and aircraft are phenomenal! I started to do the famous Jasta 5 line-up in 1/48 using selective compression, only doing the front walls of the hangers. I gave up on it (the diorama) because it was simply too much space! Keep up your beautiful work, I love Jasta 5.

Really impressive. A masterpiece of a hanger! Maybe the roof would need a little more rust?

Thanks for the kind words about my work, guys.
Vincentm you're right, it looks a bit sterile hangar, but I was afraid at this stage to keep it tо weathering it.
Forbad me fact that the hangar was built in the same year, and I think there is no way to look very old.
Will try to weathering more when diorama acquire slightly more finished look.

i am impressed, your decals a very nice. i work mainly in 1/48 but would love to replicate rumey's demon. i wonder if it would be possible to re-size your artwork for 1/48? if so i would like to take you up on your offer for the pdf you made.
-
you are very good brush painter. also i want to say i have an airbrush but i usually prefer to brush paint because to me it is advantageous many times to do so.as you know successful brush painting is making sure your paint is thinned properly . i have actually developed many effects with the brush that use translucent layers which allows preshading effects. i use many acrylic paints and after painting a basecoat i mix future(klear) with the original coat and use pastel or pigment powders to shade ribs and other things then of course paint translucent layers on top until the correct amount of shading shows thru. i often use dull cote by testors in the can to even out surfaces . like when i put decals on the wings and they are thick i like them to appear to be painted on not to look like a decal.if you put a few layers of dullcote this also helps blend everything and makes a nice overall effect.

Fantastic Hristo,
I love the corrugated metal finish on your hanger, very realistic.

First. I hope that the publication of individual decals does not violate the rules of this forum.
However, if I did, please administrator to delete this post, and I apologize for that.
You can use the decals in both scale 1/72 and 1/48.
To use them in 1/72 scale print at 100%.
To use them in 1/48 scale print at 150%.
The image is vector and there will be no loss of quality when scaling.
That is all.
The decals are attached to the post.
If you get stuck write me for further clarifications.

Hello everybody!
I'm weatheting and assembled the models. For weathering used dry pastels to highlight the ribs - with their help, the outcome is best to work with a brush, and finally of course oil washes. For the first time I used a thin strip of masking tape by JammyDog-0.5mm, which is also very convenient and saves a lot of time. Highly recommend it. For ropes used two thicknesses 0.08 mm 0.12 mm cord, not that many shows.

Hello everybody!
I'm done with painting the Udet's plane.
Laid decals some of them from the set, while others need to print, because the supplied decals with crosses inexplicably after laying on lozenge could not stick and become to dust.
I tried to imitate two different lacquer coatings for wood and fabric with help of two types of varnish :satin + matte and satin + gloss , the result is not exactly what I expected but acceptable.

These aircraft are absolute masterpieces Hristo, and I still find it hard to believe they're 1/72 scale. The overall project, once finished, will be spectacular!
