Title: Revell 1/72 Albatros DIII
Post by: justin1980 on May 11, 2014, 10:06:22 PM
Hi all,

I thought I would have a go at having an under construction thread for the next build.  I only have 3 weeks before I disappear again for 4 months so I would like to get this one finished in time.  Plus I have a project I want to have a try at, after scratch building the cockpit on the DIII I managed to find a 1/48 DVII from Revell on a well known auction site, my intention will be to build it alongside its smaller cousin of which I have a few in the stash.  The reason being that I would like to see what the differences are (especially as most of the cockpit in the DIII can't be seen! >:() and if I prefer the larger scale, if I do I may just concentrate on 1/48 subjects.

Less talk more pictures eh!

Started with this;

Got to this,

And here we are now,

Hope you enjoy,

Thanks gents, I also have a plan to improve my rigging look.  So i have started making eyelets in earnest.  No turnbuckles though as in 1/72 I can't see the point.  I will try and get as much rigging done before the top wing goes on.

Off to a very good start, Justin.

Knocking up a cockpit will really make a difference - good luck for the remainder of your build.

Hi all,

Well today, all the seams were filled, sanded etc.  All the struts, spars wheels etc needed quite a lot of clean up, which is hopefully done.  All undercoated ready for checking any last niggly bits tomorrow and then on to the base coats!

(http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g411/justinlloydsmith/Abatross%20DIII/IMG_0051_zps263939c7.jpg) (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/justinlloydsmith/media/Abatross%20DIII/IMG_0051_zps263939c7.jpg.html)

Control horns and eyelets have been fitted.  My intention is to add the spars and struts to the fuselage and bottom wing and I have worked out I can do 6 lines on each which prior to the top wing.  I should be able to do all six with one piece of monofilament and then I will crimp each eyelet as I run the line through taut, add a drop of CA, so should only need to cut the excess off the last one.  At present I don't think the eyelets looks scale, so by crimping them it will turn them into more of a turnbuckle and eyelet hopefully!  Well thats the plan!

(http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g411/justinlloydsmith/Abatross%20DIII/IMG_0052_zpsc2695fa3.jpg) (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/justinlloydsmith/media/Abatross%20DIII/IMG_0052_zpsc2695fa3.jpg.html)

The exhaust has been drilled out and the kits Spandau's have been consigned to the bin, laughable representation, OK (just checked scale mates!) its a 1963 tooling it gets of ::) ;D.  So I am waiting on some Mini-world replacements.

Will hopefully have some updates tomorrow with the base coats done and more assembly.

Thanks again for looking,

Justin

Looks like you have an excellent plan for the rigging. it is nice seeing this OLD CLASSIC kit being built! This was one of the first WW1 Models I ever built, I was 11 or 12 so about 1964ish. Built and painted flat black in one evening  ::) Yours is considerably better to say the least!

Hi all,

Base coats done, just a few touch ups left.  Will leave it overnight and start getting things together, the tail has just been placed on.

I think the colours came out OK, but the mauve/purple became more of a PURPLE! I like it and the wife thinks its pretty to boot! :o

Thanks radio, the purple was a home brew, revell aqua fiery red and blue.  Mixed about 70/30.  All airbrushed, lots of masking, tomorrow will be the true test of the rigging plan!

Thanks bud, glad you like it,

Regards

Progressing lovely, Justin.

These old kits really go together well despite age and lack of internal detail.

Beautiful scratch-building in the cockpit, and well-done wood color.
On this kit (and also some others at the same scale), the aileron tips are flat although they should slightly point upwards. I think you could work this out by gently heating the plastic and bend the tips. This is one of the reasons why I prefer Roden 1/72 Albatroses, but I have to admit that on the other hand, they're pretty much harder to build...

My wife is also glad with my WWI buildings, especially the pink rib tapes... ;D
She says she likes them better than the "ugly green and brown things" from WWII I usually fill the living-room showcases with...

Lovely work Justin, hard to relate detail like this to 1:72 Scale! A pleasure to follow your progress. :)

Sorry that I have missed this one before. iI too know this kit from my teenage years….. You are making an excellent job of it, especially all of those eyelets. The paint job looks especially good - who was the pilot?

Thanks for the comments guys, not much progress to report.

Thanks LM, the pilot was Goering, I am currently planning 4 aircraft of Goering's including the Albatros, plus 3 DVII's and hopefully they will be on display at Telford this year if all goes to plan, yikes! :o

Hi folks,

A lot has been done today, the Albie has taken a back seat until now due to wing fit issues.  But this morning I beat the crap out of it to get the top wing on!  Third time's the charm!

Miniworld Spandau's added as well.  My plan for the rigging didn't work prior to wing fit due the issues.  But with the eyelets in place it shouldn't be too difficult, hopefully, he says! :o

She is still looking quite shiny due to the gloss for the decals.

Just slowly getting the decals to settle down, then some light weathering and the final matt coat before rigging!  Cant wait!

Thanks for looking,

Justin

That's a fantastic job you've done there. Although an old kit it's come out well. I think Revell are a bit underrated when it comes to biplanes in this scale.

Hello Justin:

Great job so far.  I like the color scheme, very striking.  No matter what Goering was, he was an ace and he did fly some colorful a/c.  Looking forward to more updates.

Best
