Title: 1/28 Revell Sopwith Camel
Post by: Epeeman on May 05, 2014, 08:31:52 PM
All,

Completed the latest Revell reissue of their ancient, large scale Camel kit.

I liked the look of this kit as soon as I saw it.  Not sure how accurate the markings are, but they look good to me.   I'm very pleased how this one has come out.  Mostly OOB build with exception of (basic) detailing to seat, cockpit and MG's.   Also went to a lot of trouble to ensure the top wing setup was correct (I've built this in the past and top wing has a distinct bow if built from box) so that upper wing was straight and lower ones had the correct upward angle.   Relocated the cabane strut mounted wind driven pump thing and altered the kit figure to look a bit more accurate.

Very nice kit that goes together very well.  These large scale kits offer a lot of opportunities for super detail work if you are lucky enough to have those skills - recommended.

Many pictures taken outside in natural light to (hopefully) bring out the best in the model - I hope you enjoy!

Regards

Dave

Great markings and nicely done Dave. I can't help but remark on how nice the weather looks in your photos; I woke up to 10 or more cm's of snow this morning in the "Great White North"! If the weather here were better I might be inspired to produce a Camel as nice as this one, nice work! 8)

What a magnificent piece of work, Dave. To think I have turned up my nose at this old Camel model so many times! Yet you have shown just what can be achieved with it. For me, this is top drawer modelling.

Best wishes
Nigel

Wow! That is probably the best model made from that kit I have seen. The markings are very well executed.

Well, Dave, seems your concerns over accuracy of the scheme are unfounded.  I knew I had information on "Donner-Wetter", B7190, buried away somewhere.  Did some digging and came up with an in depth article in Cross and Cockade Vol 44/1 complete with photos and gorgeous color profile and planview.  Congratulations, mate!  It appears that your rendition is not only stunning, but accurate, to boot!
Cheers,
Bud

Rob and Lance -

Thank you both

Bud - you star, mate!  I'm pleased that Revell got this right - you don't happen to have a picture of that profile by any chance?

Honestly, folks - all these large scale Revell kits are pretty good on the whole - they just need a bit work (small, basic work in my case) to really bring the best out in them.   As I read elsewhere, these reward the modeller who puts the work in.  The fit of parts is also very good although cleaning up every part does become tedious ............

I would dearly love to see what one of our true professional model blokes could do with one of these kits - anybody up for the challenge?

Regards

Dave

Due to copyright laws, I can't put the profile up here, but here is a bit of the article I found on the internet, so it's fair game.

Sorry for being a bit late Dave but your build is absolutely stunning, the overall finish on this model is superb with very eye catching markings, you have given this old kit a new lease of life and made it look as good if not better than any other Camel kit available, congratulations Dave and well done.

Des.

What can I add? To think that those moulds must be well over 40 years old and you have produced a model of that quality from them … and with a hairy stick to boot!! I do think that you seriously under-estimate your skill and talent (basic details etc), - I think that that model has the potential to win prizes. Excellent work. Many congratulations.

Great build, very attractive scheme. And it would look much better with a monochrome background... Though your backside garden is nice, too ;)

Beautiful Camel, Dave!  A nice clean build and marvelous scheme. Although this is an old mold, what is the plastic like?  The older editions tend to be both tough and a bit brittle. Is it molded in their newer gray plastic or more of the green stuff?

Vickers, thanks, mate.

The plastic in this kit was absolutely fine.  Molded in biege/light tan plastic.   The main issue with these old Revell kits is in extended preparation time.  Every single part requires cleaning up of flash, seams, pin holes, etc.   Having said that, interestingly, this particular kit was not as bad as the others.   Fit of these kits is good and pretty straightforward to put together.

Excellent work, Sir!

I remember doing this kit when I was a kid: it and its companions were the introduction to detail for me. It is a real treat to see this done so well!
