So since I just ordered the Eduard PE set for the Roden Spad, and my WnW Se5a is currently clearing customs, that left me with only one kit to work on, the Nieuport 24.
Having spent countless hours pouring over the instructions for the Hisso, the Roden instructions were a bit of a letdown. Thank you all who have posted build logs on the N 24 for the assistance and save there...
The purpose of this build is to practice some things before I get all fancy with the other 2 kits, first and foremost woodgraining, with a close second rigging with 'buckles and whatnot, with a very close C being working on pre-shading and air brushing. To that end shortcuts are being taken, but not terrible ones, even though some of the paintwork is a bit sloppy...
Enough with the chat, here are some photos:
First my first home made turnbuckle, thanks to Des and Bo.

Second an overall shot of where I am at so far.
Next, my first attempt at wood grain. Forgive the rest of the paint, it needs touching up and I am rushing some.
The prop drying, awaiting some oils.

The engine all shiny.

Lastly, Roden has you bending the seat back around the cushion. I got some hot water, held the seat back in it to soften in, bent it around the cushion, CA glued it and here is what I got:

I figure the water was not hot enough, or it cooled too quickly... Either way I laughed about it.
So as I move forward on the build I will post more. Hints and tips are humbly requested, as this is my first and a half bi-plane (the first being a Roden Dh2 that will be in the "oops" section shortly...)
Thanks all!
-
Great to see you diving in and posting your photos. Yeah, on the seat, probably hotter water, or let it sit longer. Live and learn. I think the Tom's modelworks PE set has a seat back, if you are inclined to fix it.
-
Nice to see you jump in feet first Jason, no better way to learn than to get stuck into it. Your progress so far is looking pretty good, pity about the seat back but I have heard of this issue quite a few times from other modelers. As Bo mentioned, if you feel as though you want to fix the seat the PE set is one option, or you could cut a new seat back from thin styrene sheet and drill corresponding holes, the thin styrene bends very easy without heat. Looking forward to seeing more progress photos of this build.

I like the cut of your jib. :)
Lindsay
-
Your overall work looks good to me! You are not the first to have that seat back break and won't be the last.... After all I have one to build 8)
RAGIII
-
I have the seat issue solved, kinda... The brass set for the Spad comes with a seat, and the dimensions are the same, so for the greater good, a sacrifice will be made. I hope to get some more done tomorrow, pictures to follow.
-
Nice start, shame about the seat. I agree with Des and would recommend you cut one from thin styrene sheet, then drill it. It will bend around the seat cushion very easily.

Why thank you. It was kinda funny, I set it down all proud, when suddenly "tick". What was that? Oh. The seat... get my camera..
-
Just a quick update, nothing too much to report, what with the family and the overeating and all...
First, the prop:
Now it needs to dry, some paint on the hub, and then some Johnson's Magic shiny stuff that used to be called Future.
The saga of the seat continues. I mentioned I had a seat that was surplus to demands from my Spad that was pretty close.
Some work with a file to round the corners out a bit:
In the depths of a food coma, grab the wrong size drill bit for the pin vice...

It still looks pretty good, and I am going to run with it for now, maybe pick up some sheet styrene tomorrow and go for round 3...lol
-
A quandary has developed. My Se5a made a surprise appearance today from New Zealand. I am not happy with the Rosen kit at all, as I find the instructions vague, and parts painting a bit more of a guess than I like. So do I set the nieuport aside for now, and jump on the easier kit? Or do I stay the course with the 24? Sigh... thinking time...
-
No one's keeping score. If you have lost interest, pack it up neatLy with whatever notes you think you will need when / if you come back to it.
-
I agree with Bo. Roden kits can be extraordinarily frustrating, even for a seasoned modeler. WNW kits, on the other hand, are nearly fool-proof (so long as you keep all mating surfaces free of paint).
Cheers,
Bud
-
Bo, Bud, you are right. Tomorrow I will wash and prime, and get the airbrush ready. And then I will change the name of this thread.
I am surprised the kit got here so fast, it shipped on the 18th, and I was not expecting it until Friday at the earliest.
-
Hi Jason,
I would have stayed with the Nieuport, but on the other hand, you will not regret starting the beautiful SE5a from WnW. A very nice kit. It will be somewhat more difficult in rigging I think. Good luck!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Like Bo and Bud, I think you have made the right decision based on you hesitance to continue the Nieuport. The Roden kits take a bit more finesse and work to assemble. Perhaps after a couple of WNW kits you will go back to the Nieuport. I am looking forward to following your SE5a build.
RAGIII
-
I agree to disagree ;) I have no experience with Roden kits but I think if you have enough motivation a hard model may force you to learn hell lot of things in no time on the other hand it may discourage you to modelling for good... My first WWI subject was Airco DH2 from Smer - of course it would be easier and much nicer to buy the Eduard`s kit but the experience I got is priceless.
I will follow your SE5a build; good luck! ;)
-
So after several hours of just staring at the Nieuport, and the arrival of the WNW Se5a, I came to the decision to shelve the 24 for the moment, so as not to give it flying lessons, and jump n the Hisso. So let's wade right in...
An overall shot, that lets me know I have some adjusting and touch-up to do.
After seeing this one I went back and feathered the wood grain a bit more
(https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/t1.0-9/10246395_10202920287402163_6533148614365732001_n.jpg)
I just noticed another touch-up I need to do.
Dry fit test flight...
I need to finish up the seat bottom and get it blended in with the rest of things. I discovered by accident the a thin coat of Burnt Umber makes the leather pop nicely. I will have to see how it dries.
So from here I will do some touching up and the control column tonight, and hopefully start on the engine tomorrow while it all dries.
Please feel free to comment, as I am frankly in awe of the collective talent here, and I want to learn.
Thanks!
-
Hello T.H.:
You certainly are off to a start. I can't say I blame you for putting the Roden kit away. I have one that I go back to occassinally, eventually it will get finished. The SE5a is a tough kit. It is one of the four first issued by WNW. I have a build log that may help you out. http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=996.0. It is basically a lessons learned from when I built/ruined my first one, I built a second one, and this was the rebuild of the first one. As you are just starting on this kit, you may find the build log helpful and allevieat some of the frustrations that this kit can generate. Good Luck.

Thanks for the link Mark. Your blog was one of the ones I read in preparation for much build, and I took copious notes. I bought a tablet so I could reference the many fantastic builds on this site and not have to leave my workshop. I only hope I can live up to the big "brothers" here.
-
You will do fine T.H. Each model is a learning experience and the best one you ever built is the one you are working on now. Take your time and follow the sequence in the build log. It will be an enjoyable build, albeit challenging.

Really good start! I think you will learn that on this forum No one needs to live up to anyone else's build! We all model to the best of our ability and happily post our progress :) :) :) ..... and completed works!

I got some work done between last night and today, thought I would share some pictures...
First I have done some more work on the "office", including the cables for the ailerons.

Next, the front framing. It is much more subtle in person
(https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/t1.0-9/10157184_10202934137068396_5927388851361434972_n.jpg)
I am very pleased with how this turned out, the instrument panel.

The fuselage halves, dreaming of their upcoming union...

And finally the heart of the beast under construction

The seam on the engine is not noticeable in person, but it will need to be addressed for sure.
Thank you one and all for looking, I have been a member of many many online forums and this is by far the greatest group I have seen.

Very fine work on the innards, Jason! That instrument panel looks fantastic.

A very nice painting and build T.H.

Hello TH:
The instrument panel looks exceptionally well, everything else looks like it is coming along nicely as well. Do you plan on having the engine compartment open? If not, most of the engine details will be covered. Looking forward to watching along as you continue to progress through the build.

I have been busy with the job that keeps me in hobby, and had a set back that annoyed the daylights out of me. I spent hours on the control cables in the cockpit, buttoned up the fuselage halves, and stopped for the day. When I went back the next afternoon, the cabling was a mass of ez line, looking as if a 1/32 scale cat had been playing with it. So my His so will not have interior cables. As near as I can figure, the plastic cement got on it... oh well. Also the ring sight for the Vickers went "ting" and disappeared. No worries... Here are some more photos of where I am in the build.

Hi TH,
Very nice paintwork and beautiful color. You are going fast!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Hello TH:
The color looks great. I really like your wood tone on the interplane struts, very nice. This is coming along. The interior cables aren't all that noticeable, but I certainly understand your frustration. EZ line can be difficult to work with and if any plastic cement got on it, that would certainly explain the bundle that appeared in your cockpit.
Looking forward to your next update.
