Goodness me, a day we could have done without.
Here in France My wife Ena and I were invited to join the école primaire on their annual seaside residential this week. All went brilliantly until this morning, (although I had virtually no internet access to keep on top of my work) when Ena slipped on some pine needles on some wooden steps on a path near the sea. The outcome? A broken and dislocated ankle - which we now know to be fractured in three places. So today has been spent in two hospitals, one at Limoges, and they are operating on Ena tonight.
Best wishes

I'm very sorry to read of Ena's mishap, Nigel. Pleased pass on to her my wishes for a speedy and full recovery.

I'm so sorry to hear of what happened to Ena, an unfortunate accident but still a very painful accident all the same. Please give her my best wishes for a speedy recovery and I hope she is not in too much discomfort.
Des.

My best wishes as well for a complete, and speedy recovery. Perhaps a decent bottle of the local beverage may help?
-
Nigel,
I'm very sorry to hear of your Wife's accident. Take care of her (and yourself); my best wishes for a successful operation and a speedy recovery to Ena.

Ouch! Here's hoping your wife is up and around very soon.
-
Sorry to hear of your wifes accident. MUst have been quite painful from the sound of your description. My best wishes for a speedy recovery!
RAGIII

That sucks! I hope she's an avid quilter or is fond of reading, or the layup period is going to be one long, long stretch!
-
I'm very sorry to hear of your Wife's injury, Nigel. Please accept my wishes
for her speedy a recovery as possible.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Dear Bud, Des, Mike, Lance, RAGIII, Lindsey, Ernie, Ken and Patrick
Thank you all so much for your kind words and thoughts. I've just got back from the hospital. Ena was operated on very late last night. It proved a complicated op. and they were unable to pin the bits on the inside of the foot/ankle. Instead there's a hefty bit of kit on the outside keeping things together. Ena was overwhelmed at your kindness and has insisted on the following message.
Hello
I know that Nigel really loves this forum and he is always telling me about it! In fact I even recognise some of the names now. When he showed me the messages here I was so overwhelmed. Your kindness affirms all the things Nigel has told me. I'll be out of action for some time. With all of his university work already making it impossible for any real building, this won't help. But he tells me that a BE Datafile has arrived and that something new is on the way from NZ. I did know honestly.
Thank you
Ena
xx

Nigel may I add my hopes for your wife's speedy recovery. That sounds a really horrible accident and as others have said it will sadly be a long recovery period, but i do hope that all will mend properly in time and that she will be able to resume a normal and hopefully active life again as soon as possible.
-
Thank you so much LM. The kindness shown by you and others on this great forum has been moving and very much appreciated.
Best wishes
Nigel

Hello, Nigel and Ena,
Please accept our best wishes for a speedy recovery and a return to normal life. I know from experience how an injury of this nature can be most difficult. Get well soon! ;D
-
Thanks Garry. Ena's still in hospital after a second operation and they are keeping her under observation following some complications. I manage to get to the hospital for morning, afternoon and evening visits but it's all very wearing.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
It can be very tiring visiting three times a day but you being there with Ena will assist her in her healing process, nothing is more comforting than having loved ones near by. I hope that the complications that Ena has experienced do not amount to anything serious and that the medical staff get on top of it very quickly, please pass on my best wishes to Ena, and also my best wishes to you Nigel for supporting your wife so well, I hope it doesn't have an impact on your health and well being, take care of yoursdelf so you can take care of Ena.
Des.
-
Thank you Des. Your kind words and thoughts mean a lot to us both.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
My thoughts are with you, Nigel.
I hope Ena makes a speedy recovery.
Take care,

Thank you Bob. We see the surgeon again tomorrow and hope he says Ena can come out until such time as she has to return , have the cast removed, all the stitches out and another cast put on.

Hello Nigel,
I sincerely hope that you will have good news tomorrow when the surgeon passes by. With the summer in view I hope you both can soon go out again. Best wishes and a lot of courage my friend.
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Thank you Patrick. The hospital have started her on crutches and the local pharmacy is lending us a wheelchair for when she comes out. Unfortunately the short break in Barcelona lined up for Ena's birthday at the beginning of May has had to be banged on the head. Maybe later in the year.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Hello Nigel,
Barcelona will still be there later in the year my friend. The most important thing now is that Ena recovers well and with you as her nurse I'm sure she will!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Nige, my best wishes for a speedy, and complete recovery.
-
Dear Patrick and Mike
Thanks again for your kindness. We're now looking to release from hospital on Thursday at the earliest - it depends on how things are clearing up.

Both of you hang in there!! Better in a place that can deal with the situation than having to rush back!!
Steve

Thank you Martin and Steve for your kind messages.
That's exactly what I've said to Ena, Steve.
Best wishes
Nigel

Nigel, please give my wishes for a speedy recovery to your wife. I know she is in good hands with many good people behind you both.

Dear treadhead1944
Thank you for your kind words; you are so right. I guess this episode has certainly taught me a thing or two.

Hello All
Just a quick update to let you know the good news that Ena has now been discharged from hospital, and is at home with crutches (which they call cannes anglaises here, wheelchair, plastered leg with numerous stitches etc.
May we say thank to all forum friends who have been such a wonderful source of support
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Hello Nigel,
I'm very glad for you both Nigel! This will make your life already a bit easier, not having to go to the hospital anymore. Will Ena need doing exercises in the future? The best wishes to Ena and yourself. Take care.
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Thanks Patrick.
Ena's leg, from just below the knee down will be in plaster for up to 45 days (although they'll have to replace that in a week or so, when all the stitches come out) and then it's physio, physio, physio as far as I know.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Better news Nigel! Glad to hear your wife is home.
-
Nice to hear that Nigel. Wish all the best.
Martin
-
Wonderful news to hear that Ena is home Nigel, it is always so much better to be back in your own home and familiar surroundings. Once the stitches are removed Ena will feel a lot better but even though physio can be a drag it is very essential for a full recovery.
Des.
-
Dear Mike, Martin and Des, thank you for your characteristic kindness and support. It certainly is a relief to have Ena home. It's also helping to give me a better appreciation of the difficulties facing those who, if only temporarily, are wheelchair bound and/or are on crutches.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Great news. Being home is always a great aid to recovery and a lot less strain on you both.
Bets wishes to you both.
-
Thank you Ken. Your words of support are much appreciated.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Very good news, Nigel. :D It is a pain (forgive the pun ::)) for Ena to have to
hobble around on crutches, but at least she can do it in her home. Much better
for everybody. My best wishes to both of you.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Thank you Ernie for your words of such friendship. Fortunately in our house there is a bedroom we can use on the ground floor. We've now mapped out (metaphorically of course) where we can get the wheelchair and where it's a case of using the crutches. We're getting there!
Best wishes
Nigel
-
I am so happy that things are settling down for you both. She will be out of the cast and running laps before you know it.
-
Thank you treadhead1944 for your kindness. When I showed Ena your message it brought a smile to her face.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
sounds good!
as far I know (ask why?) now are coming the hard times: undertaking physio means do it positively and with an aggressive attitude, for achieve the best results... and can be really hard, sometimes.
but being at home means to have a constant support, and being surrounded from a confident environment. something fundamental, in an illness period.
good luck and.... good work! ;)
-
Thanks mc65, words of wisdom indeed. We've spent the afternoon back at hospital for a further X-ray and checks with the doctors. There's still some concerns about the way the skin is healing, but the pins seem to be working well enough. It may be a while before things like the physio can start, but when it does.........

Hello Nigel:
I am just catching up on this thread. I am glad to see that Ena is up and about and on the mend. What an untimely mishap for you and her. I hope the recovery continues and that she will be up and about without the aid of crutches.
Best Wishes
Mark
-
Thank you Mark. Ena's recovery continues, though we are certainly learning a lot about life in a wheelchair/with crutches, even if it is temporary. So many friends have been wonderful too.
Best wishes
Nigel

Hello All,
At long last! Twelve weeks to the day after the accident, they have removed the plaster from Ena's leg. It's now 30+ sessions at physio, crutches and probably the occasional wheelchair, but there now seems some light at the end of the tunnel.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Excellent news Nigel. Here's hoping all will continue to go well and that your wife makes a complete recovery in due course. It really is good when such a milestone is passed.
-
Thank you, LM. It is indeed such a relief. One of the things it means is that we can get back to the UK to see our daughter who is expecting what would be our first grandchild.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
I am so pleased for Ena, to have the plaster removed after such a long period will be a very welcome relief. In a short time now you both should have you life getting back to some sort of normallity, and I hope all goes well with your daughter and the birth of her child, your first grandchild, being a grandparent is great...
Des.
-
Thanks, Des. I think Ena and I both crave for something approaching normality now, but, of course, are very excited about what is expected to be a late September birth for a grandchild.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
That is really positive news for you and Ena, Nigel. Still a ways to go, but the
upcoming grand-baby certainly will help keep the spirits up. My best wishes
for Ena's continued progress. :)
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
That's great to hear, Nigel. I hope the rehab goes well, but maybe get her to lay off the triple jumping competitions for the time being, eh?
Lindsay
-
Glad to hear everything is starting to line back up again
Steve
-
Getting the plaster off is a major leap forward. It means the road to recovery has really begun. Hope it all continues to go well.
-
Great news Nigel, and the Grandchild factor also brings Ena's ordeal closer to a thing of the past. Good luck on both adventures!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Dear Ernie, Lindsay, Steve, Ken and Lance
Both Ena and I really appreciate your kindness and best wishes. It will take time, but as you have said, this is an important stage on the road to recovery. Right then Lindsay, no triple jumping in the near future, but maybe the high jump and pole vault will help get us there.
One of the things that Ena has said is that being wheelchair bound for all those weeks gave her a much better appreciation of the difficulties faced by those with a mobility disability. For my part it has sharpened my lamentably weak house and garden keeping skills. I've also learned a lot about getting around a city, Limoges, built on a hill and just how awkward it can be getting a wheelchair into and out of a Peugeot 207!
Best wishes
Nigel

Nice to here the good news Nigel. Wish the best to your family and the next well step for your wife.

Thanks Martin, your words are much appreciated.
