I`m planning to build:
Gotha G. V 670.16 Kagohl Belgium February - March 1918 - the plane of the commander Walter Aschoff.
My references:
Windsock Datafile Special "Gotha!"
German Bombers WWI in action - Squadron Signal

I have a question: I would like to paint the bird according to Ray Rimmel`s profile from Gotha! do know anything about the lozenge used on this bird? Were both upper and lower surfaces covered with the same loz or just like the fighters lighter/darker. Should any of you have any information or hypothesis please let me know!

Nice choice, Filip! I've got the Hippo version in my stash, so I'm really looking forward to following your work on this one.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Hi Filip,
My understanding is the lozenge colors were thought to be the same on top and underneath for german night bombers.

I agree but I`m going to build the daytime bomber from one of the first production batches, I`ve followed the thread about the daytime bombers on Aerodrome by DSA but still no fully satisfactory answers...

Before I bought mine I was hunting to get the Hippo version - pricey it was... but fortunately for me AZ reboxed it for the half of the original price ;D I have even bought Aurora Gotha but as soon as I got my hands on this one I sold it...
-
Very nice choice Filip, I am lookin forward to seeing you start work on this one.
David Wilson did a review of this kit, the review findings are here; http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=758.0

Filip, I am really looking forward to your building of this Gotha!
RAGIII

Yes,
a nice choice for the next build. I really would like to finish one myself - but shelf space is too restricted, unfortunately.
I think the kit is not only missing some bombs, but the lower bomb racks as well?

Yes - the bomb racks are something you are supposed to DIY - fortunately I have some bombs from Mirage Bomb set.
I`ve also got the painting scheme figured out thanks to Ray Rimmel. Hope to post some pics soon...
-
The Gotha will be an interesting build, Filip. I look forward to it.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Hello Filip,
That is quite a build your taking on! But I'm sure you will make a beautiful and interesting build to follow. Good luck!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
good luck, I will be following this one closely
-
I'll be watching and looking forward to seeing what you do with this one. I plan to convert mine to a G.IV.
-
Thanks for popping in and providing me with your support!
I'll be watching and looking forward to seeing what you do with this one. I plan to convert mine to a G.IV.
I was thinking about that too cause I like G.IV more - the nacelles have got nicer shape and there are plenty of interesting schemes...
Not much but this is what I`ve managed to do:

I`ve scratched the main tank (number 2) and replaced the two tanks, which were inacurate from what I`ve read...
Number 3 is a bulkhead on the basis of what I`ve seen in WnW`s G.IV instructions. I`m planning to build shelves for the Spandau drums between the fuel tank and the gunner`s bulkhead. I also have to change the Gotha tunnel a little bit...
-
Hello Filip,
The main tank is great! Wood panels look wonderful. Great work.
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Filip this was a very good update.
Martin
-
Nice progress Filip! Great start on your interior.
RAGIII

Fantastic work, so far, on the interior, Filip!

looking at pics of the Gotha GV it seems the walkway was closed... at least on the night bombers that is.

looking at pics of the Gotha GV it seems the walkway was closed... at least on the night bombers that is.
Ron
Hmm on the basis of pictures in Windsock Special I cannot determine whether it was closed or open. Picture 72 - in the above mentioned Gotha! shows the open passageway. Ron do you have any pics to support it - any help will be much apriciated!
I have other doubts - were there windows in the floor of the nose section?? pic 79 shows something rectangular under the nose section
Another one is the fuel tank - from what I`ve read in the report on the downed G.V there were two tanks...
...Confusion will be my epitaph ...
-
Hi Filip,
nice start on the Gotha.
The fuselage passageway was covered over on the G.V as the 2 fuel tanks filled the space between the pilot and rear gunners positions. The fuel tanks were positioned in tandem, but alas, there is no photographic or illustrative evidence of their shape, except for a rather indistinct GA drawing/plan that is available to view on the Russian 'Flying Machines' site that just faintly shows their postion in the fuselage. If you can get hold of them,Scale Models from Feb/Mar/April 1976 had an excellent coverage on the Gotha bombers by the late great Harry Woodman, with some good photos of the tunnel covered over. Some of these photo's are on line, just Google 'Gotha bomber',but ignore the Wikipedia fuselage layout!
Dave.
-
Dave thanks for your feedback!!!
I`ve browsed through both Gotha! and this website you`ve mentioned and I must admit I`m really confused. I`ve seen some pics of G.Vs with the passageway evidently covered and there are some with an open one. When it comes to the planes with open gangways the fuel tank seems to be located the way I`ve done it. I think I will therefore leave it as it is unless someone has some strong evidence against my interpretation. ;)
I`m trying to figure out if Goerz bombsight was installed on G.Vs and what did underside of the nose section looked like?
-
It looks amazing so far. I look forward to watching and learning.
-
Not a very spectacular update, but this is a small step for a modeller but a giant leap for Gotha ;) ;)
4 - bulkhead
5 - Parabellum magazines locker. Ammo belts are: sprue + Tamiya tape
6 - Internal bracing wires with turnbuckles.
7 - gunner`s folded seat.
I WOULD BE MORE THAN GRATEFUL FOR ANY INFO CONCERNING BOMBSIGHT USED ON GOTHAS G.V - I know that in G.IV they used Goerz bombsight, but there is no fairing under the nose of G. V where prism/s was/were covered. Instead there is something that looks like a window or a cover of some sort. But I have not seen any floor window in the commander`s cockpit pics. Also the description of the downed G.V does not mention anything about that. ANY IDEAS??
I have also noted that 670/16 has the similar rectangular thingy, that ERIKA has (picture 55 in Windsock), which is described as either a bombsight mount or a drift sight.
DO YOU HAVE ANY HYPOTHESIS ?
.
-
For me was it a great update. Looks very fine Filip.
From where did you become the Lozenge ?
Martin
-
Looking great Filip, thats gonna be quite a shelf filler when finished!
-
Looking great so far! As i'm working on a Gotha GVa, I'm keeping a close eye on your project. I'm also wondering for the fuel tanks, but as they won't be visible too much, I think that any artistic epresentation is as clse to the truth as any other - one or two, rectangular or cilindryc or any other shape. What really matter is the lozenge and I would love to see yours!
Best regards,
Sasho
-
Looking Awesome! Keep the updates coming!

Great Modelling Filip! You have a real winner in the making here. The additions and detailing are impressive to say the very least. I'm very much enjoying following your progress.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Not much progress since the last update but still. I`ve added the altimeter and compass as well as an instrument panel (which was too narrow - I need to put some putty now.

Martin

Cheers mate! This one is the slowest built ever for me!
-
Outstanding work on the compass and Altimiter! It may be a slow build but it is certainly a FANTASTIC build!
RAGIII

It`s been a while...
I`ve scratch built some details:
8 - engine controls
9 - rudder pedals -
10 - pilot`s seat - the one from the kit`s shape was entirely wrong...
11 - A signal pistol -
12 - fuel hand pump
13 - engine shutters control
14 - bomb release handles
The seatbelts are Eduard`s etched parts. In the last picture there is one of three oxygen supplies I`ve made.

filip youve been busy. this is the first build of the az/hippo kit i have seen. you have done a fantastic job so far. keep up the good work and this will be a masterpiece.

Excellent work so far Filip, your scratch building skills are superb.

It looks really good so far Filip. The work you're putting into it is really paying off.
Best wishes

Slow but steady wins the day, Filip! The detail and the clean quality of it that you are achieving here in 1:48 Scale is very impressive. This work is top notch and a tribute to your patience and skills. Absolutely great work!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thanks for all kind comments!!!
It`s a beastie for my standards - comperable to B17 in 1/72nd.
In the meantime I decaled wings with great - Aviattic - lozenge HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
The wings also need rib tapes - which will be in CDL.
To paint to fuselage I used Gotha blue from Misterkit - a really good paint I wish they were easier to get!
15 - I`ve reshaped the steering wheel
16 - I`ve added ammo drums and their locker - scratch
17 - I`ve fixed the oxygen tanks

Looks great Filip! The scratch details really add to this build.

I think OUTSTANDING is an understatement but it is the best I can do.... !
RAGIII
-
Filip this is very great.
What size of Lozenge did you use? 1:48 or 1:32 scale?
Martin
-
I`m glad that you like it ;)
What size of Lozenge did you use? 1:48 or 1:32 scale?
Martin I`m using 1:48th Aviattic faded lozenges - a great product indeed!!
-
Thank you Filip.
Martin
-
Another update:
The rib tapes are home made decals - a CDL oversprayed over the clear decal sheet. I need over 180 rib tapes, so a lot of cutting lies ahead... ;) They are CDL as Ray Rimell suggested.
I have also started to work on Mercedes VIa engines - cylinders needed separating they were cast as one element. The inlet manifolds are wrapped to simulate the asbestos tapes
(http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s520/xmald/Gotha%20G%20V/MercedesDVIa1_zps6d6c7fab.jpg)

That is a lot of rib tapes !

Cheers,

very nice work.

Hi Filip,
Great cockpit detail! Very much like how the altimeter and compass turned out.
Dagmar

Thanks for your kind words gentlemen!
In the meantime I`ve almost finished the nacelles. I`ve added all the plumbing and scratchbuilt the radiators - those from the kit were really ugly.

thanks Rick and Martin. I' ve attached the nacelles to the wings will post some pics later...

I thoroughly enjoy your build! Please keep the updates coming :)
-
Many thanks for encouragement!!!
I must admit that despite the rather low quality of the AZ models product I have a lot of fun building it. This is what it looks like now: Karaya`s Parabellum MGs. I decided to use the later version 14/17 for the commander`s post. I`ve scratchbuillt the swivel mount. I figured out that the easiest way to replicate the holes in the swivel mount is to drill some in the aluminium foil and glue it to a plastic rod.

Bombs are Mirage 50kg and 100kg from two sets.
Bomb racks are scratched - some more details to be added.
