Hi everyone,
this is my very first build of a WNW kit, and my expectations are very high, so i will do my best to give this bird a nice look.
When i first opened the box, i was suprised by the content and by the quality of the part's, decals and instruction book.
The guy's from WNW sure now's how to develope and fabricate a excellent kit, great work guy's
Ok, time to start my build progress.
First the engine. I will build this machine :
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/2_zpsce16e0cf.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/2_zpsce16e0cf.jpg.html)
So, it's got the Mercedes D.III engine with 200 Pk horsepower.
The springs on the kit part where replaced by Taures part's.

And after some work, the engine look's like this
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSC_0152_zps8908282a.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSC_0152_zps8908282a.jpg.html)

Dry-fit of the resin manifold intake from Barracuda Cast
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSC_0155_zps4bdd3ad4.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSC_0155_zps4bdd3ad4.jpg.html)
The spark plug cables are lead wire 0.2 m/m
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSC_0158_zpse95e31e9.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSC_0158_zpse95e31e9.jpg.html)
Ok, not much, but it's a begin.

next progress, or should i say, my first mistake with this kit. :o
Thank's to Richard (rsanz, here on the forum), he pointed me out that i used the 160 Pk. timing gear instead of the 200 Pk (wich i use for the model). I had no idea when i ordered the Taurus resin set, that there are differences into the two engine types :( :( :( ......ok for this mistake i will put myself on water and bread as a punishment :-[ :-[
In front you see the Taurus part. Also the lifters are in the middle of the rocker boxes instead of at the side of the boxes (wich was typical for the 200 Pk engine). The kit part i will use is behind the Taurus part and is correct.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSC_0165_zpsea6f9af9.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSC_0165_zpsea6f9af9.jpg.html)
Because of the wrong timing gear, the water pump was placed to far forward so it will conflict with the engine cowl later on.
This had to be solved, so surgery had to be performed.
Removal of the rocker boxes was no big deal, but the springs (Taurus) needed also to be removed because i wanted to use them again.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSC_0166_zpsc982cab9.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSC_0166_zpsc982cab9.jpg.html)
After this was done with succes and without loss of any of the springs ;D the correct kit part was placed together with the springs.
Et voila, this will be much better.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSC_0169_zps956ef773.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSC_0169_zps956ef773.jpg.html)
And now, some paint progress on the engine.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSC_0178_zpscdfc4591.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSC_0178_zpscdfc4591.jpg.html)

The engine was first painted with Alclad aluminium, and after that the rest was brush painted with Vallejo Model color.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSC_0180_zps32512686.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSC_0180_zps32512686.jpg.html)

Also the manifold intake was painted and received a wash.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSC_0181_zps068fce4a.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSC_0181_zps068fce4a.jpg.html)

The intake manifolds and carburetor look absolutely realistic.
Very convincing built so far.

Great start. Lovely aircraft. I will be watching this thread with great interest.
BTW, should not all the cylinders have the red overcompression bands?
-
A wounderful engine, Danny.

Thank's guy's for the nice comments ;)
BTW, should not all the cylinders have the red overcompression bands?
Maybe yes, i've seen pictures of engines that didn't have these red band's and i've seen engines with red band's on all cillinders, so i think whe can go all way's with this.
The color photo's of the engine in the instruction booklet show an engine with one color band on the first cilinder, so, that's wy i did the same.

Hello Danny:
You are certainly off to a good start. You managed to overcome the challenge of redoing part of the engine and it looks fantastic. There were issues with the length of the rocker assembly by Taurus being off a bit. It looks like the correction was made and marketed. Your weathering of the engine really looks the business and it looks like an engine that has seen some service.
Looking forward to the next update.

time to put some more pic's overhere. Today i put some paint on the cockpit part's, in preperation for the wood like threatment with oil paint.
For the wood i used Light wood XF-78 and for the interior green i used XF-76.
The ammunition box and empty belt box are painted with Alclad Aluminium.

i did the final work on the cockpit section. Some little detail painting and the rigging of the controle cables.
This was done with the wonderfull elastic rigging wire from Ushi, for this i used the fine size.

Also the canvas behind the pilot seat got a wash.

Hi guy's,
back to real-time now ;)
I took some time to prepare the fuselage, wings and controle surfaces for the Lozenge and Ushi wood decals. Mr.surfacer 1200 primer, and Tamiya XF-55 deck tan for the base coat together with some pre-shade.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0062_zps84a11418.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0062_zps84a11418.jpg.html)
I decided to start with the Lozenge decals, for this i use the Wood & Wire decals wich i find very realistic compared with the kit decals.^_^
To get some feeling into a new world that will open for me, i first tackled the lower Lozenge on the horizontal tail section.
soon i realize that the Wood &Wire decals had to be handled with the most care possible because they are very fragile, but also very thin.
After looking for some courage:wacko: it was time to start a unknow journey.
Soon i realize that all was not so bad at all, the decals could be handled very good, and i was very pleased with the end result.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSC_0296_zps8d45c9a4.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSC_0296_zps8d45c9a4.jpg.html)
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSC_0295_zpsf23d3e28.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSC_0295_zpsf23d3e28.jpg.html)
For the wings i decided to cut the Lozenge decals in part's, to prevent that the decals where to big to handle, it's a little extra work, but for me, it was a good job.

After all, this is a very pleasant work, maybe i made some mistakes but the end result is good for me.

Hi Danny,
Your progress is fantastic. Yhe engine is magnificent. Interior stunning. Love the seat. You are up to a wonderful build.
Kind regards

Amazing work, Danny! Beautiful job on the woodwork and especially the lozenge, which
while beautiful is very thin and delicate. You have a stunner of a build going.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Two thumbs up mate! The engine looks marvellous! I simply love these faded lozenges. The D.VI is one of my all time favourites because of the fuselage construction - very pleasant boat like design ;) Maybe Bataille (which Des is brilliantly building now) was an inspiration ;) I`ve seen the fuselage in Kraków museum and I wish they will rebuild the wings as well to present it in its full beauty!
Keep up the great work!
-
Terrific work on the engine and cockpit, Danny. Your wood grain is excellent and the detailing is exceptional, very beautiful work!

Great work so far. I love the engine weathering and wood effects. I also appreciate the feedback on Old Propeller/Wood & Wire decal, as I just bought a sheet of lozenges from them and was wondering how they would behave.

You certainly weren't kidding about the Massive Update! Your Engine and interior are superb! As for the rest it looks as though your Lozenge work will be as beautiful as the other work you have done!!

Hello Danny:
WOW! A rather unorthodox way of applying lozenge, but if it works......good on yer. This is coming along nicely, outstanding workmanship all around. Looking forward to see how your lozenge turns out. Interesting concept to say the least.

I like you lozenge approach, I think I would be tempted to do something similar with those fragile W&W decals.
-
Dittos to the above, Nicely done, look fwd to completion
-
Hi Guy's, thank's allot for the really nice comment's :)
Regarding the lozenge cammo decals : this was my ever first time that i used W&W Lozenge decals and, that i used this way of work. I really tought about the way of approach to aply the decals, i looked at similar builds but from the moment i learned about how fragile these decals where, i decided then chose the way to apply the decals in seperate part's to the surfaces.
Thank's allot for this great feedback guy's ;) ;)

Nice build log to inspire us.

Hi all,
some time ago, i started on the WNW Roland..........and i tought it was about time to put some more progress on this bird.
After i decaled the two wings and the tail section with the excellent Lozenge decals from the Wood & Wire range, i decided to give the wings some depth with a post-shade.
For this i used oils, a very time consuming work, but at the end, i think it's quit allright to say that the end result i think is satisfied.
Under side of the wings after decaling the Lozenge decals, and post shading with oils

Upper side of the wings.

And the upper side after post-shading with oils

Between the work, i searched for a good figure, to stand proud in front of the Roland, depict on so many photo's of that time, where pilot's posed proud in front of theire flying machines. Not many figures are on the market, in such a pose, so my choice was very limited. I didn't wanted to put a famous pilot in front of the model.
So one beautifull figure got my attention, that from Elan13.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/045_zpsbdb30e62.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/045_zpsbdb30e62.jpg.html)

And this is what i got a few day's later after ordering it.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0254_zpsa9e9a903.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0254_zpsa9e9a903.jpg.html)

The head and left hand are seperated, very nice figure that will stand for sure very good with the model.

Great work on the engine and the lozenge decals. I've some of the Wood 'n Wires stuff in stock and look forward to getting as good a result as you've done. I like the way you have not decaled over the rib tapes so that these these only get one layer, not two. They can look like battens, not tapes, otherwise.
Carry on!

Back for some progress on the Roland itself.
The wings and horizontal stabilizer got theire rib takes.
Oh boy, iff you tought the Old Propellor lozenge decals where a real challenge, the, rib takes are for certain a pain staking proces to apply.
But at the end, after all is done, the rib takes decals are, once they settled a real realistic ad-on to the model.:D
The lower wing, upper side

lower wing, lower side
i did apply also the crosses, but here it went not really like i wanted, after i apply the Micro Sol, the crosses did show a strange way of settling, i don't know why, but the end result isn't really the way i wanted. Ok i will mask this with some wheatering, and it is the lower side, but still, i don't like it.

Hi guy's,
time for the next update: taking care of the fuselage.;)
first i wanted to try the Ushi wooden decals onto the fuselage, but, due to the very tiny details that are scattered on the fuselage, and the fine wooden lamels, i was afraid that i couldn't do the job properly.
So i decided to change the strategie, and i went for a wooden structure with oil's.
First i needed a other base coat, so for this i used Tamiya XF-59 Dessert yellow.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0293_zps8d88826f.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0293_zps8d88826f.jpg.html)
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0295_zps43f8a9a3.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0295_zps43f8a9a3.jpg.html)
A nice layer of Tamiya gloss coat finnished the fuselage, and it was ready to receive the oil paint.
I didn't wanted the same color as the cockpit so i my choice feld on another shade, Talens Van Gogh Raw Umber.
I started with the underside of the fuselage, and this is the result:
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0297_zps74ed03f3.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0297_zps74ed03f3.jpg.html)
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0298_zps1d08ea4f.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0298_zps1d08ea4f.jpg.html)
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0300_zpsea302ab7.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0300_zpsea302ab7.jpg.html)
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0301_zps3a71a815.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0301_zps3a71a815.jpg.html)
For this technique i used a fin round brush to put some dot's of oil paint onto the fuselage. Then i use three different sizes of flat brushes to get the wooden texture. Trick is, that how more brushes you use how finer the texture will be. This is a very pleasant technique that allows you to make change in the pattern, and iff mistakes are made then to solve them.

Great work on this model. I love the wood grain, thanks for sharing your technique, I think I'll try that. Just one question: how many dots of oil paint do you put on the tan undercoat, I mean which density?
-
Just one question: how many dots of oil paint do you put on the tan undercoat, I mean which density?
Thank's Vincent ;)
Now regarding you're question:
how many depent's on how heavy you want the texture of the woodgrain. It's difficult to say, but the next photo give's a idea.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSC_0218_zps1f21342f.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSC_0218_zps1f21342f.jpg.html)
This is a test piece i made before i painted the cockpit, but it gives a pretty good image of the density i use also for the wooden plancking of the fuselage.
I will try to take some pictures of the progress thiss weekend. ;)

Hi guy's and Girl's,
today i finnished the woodwork on the fuselage of my Roland, and i must say that i am pleased with the result.
I've seen that some people really could use a how to, for theire own project, so i tought it was about time to share some noob techniques :P regarding wood grain structure ;D
First i need to say that this project is also my very first woodgrain project so far.
I will explain the progress using the vertical tail of the Roland.
Iff you look at the surface of the fuselage, you will see that there are a lot of nails (rivets) where used to secure the plank's to the fuselage frame. These nails are an important part of the fuselage and therefore they can give a really good extra detail to the whole model.
To accent the nails i put extra oil paint into the engraved nails.
The cross you see at the verical tail are the nails that are filled with oil paint.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0319_zpsc444753c.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0319_zpsc444753c.jpg.html)
Now i will place dot's of oil paint between the lines.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0320_zpsf80a7862.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0320_zpsf80a7862.jpg.html)
The quantity of dot's are different regarding the woodgrain that you desire, so less dot's meane, a lighter woodgrain effect, but also less room to play with the paint for a different wood texture.
To place the dot's i use a number 00 round pointed brush.
Now, to get the first woodgrain effect i use a flat brush number 1. With long strokes i blend the dot's into each-other, this will be yoy're first woodgrain texture.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0321_zps2a1fc723.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0321_zps2a1fc723.jpg.html)
Remenber to clean you're brush after every stroke on a kitchen paper. IMPORTANT NOTICE : do not use any cleaner, because this will ruin you're work.
After this is done, i use a number 2 flat brush, and again with long strokes i blend the oil paint to get a more finer woodgrain.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0322_zps2767aaf0.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0322_zps2767aaf0.jpg.html)
iff you think "ok this is fine be me" ok then you can stop, and you're work is done, but i will use a thirt flat brush, a number 4 to get the woodgrain a little finer.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0323_zpsb30e33d0.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0323_zpsb30e33d0.jpg.html)
Et voila, you have a wooden fuselage. All depent's on personal favour, and you can go very far by this methode. You can blend with different colors, and you can change the direction of brush strokes to get other patterns.
Now back to the project, the whole fuselage is done, and this is the result.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0327_zps11018c90.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0327_zps11018c90.jpg.html)

I agree the woodgrain is absolutely briliant! I have my doubts concerning this pale blue - of course pictures colours differ from reality but I remember the D.VI fuselage in Kraków museum and hatches and other parts look more pale green gray...I have been there a long time ago though...
Take a look here - Toby Young's pic from museum: http://www.wwi-models.org/Photos/batch/LuVi/krakow/roland-div/krakow_roland_d-iv_005.jpg (http://www.wwi-models.org/Photos/batch/LuVi/krakow/roland-div/krakow_roland_d-iv_005.jpg)

Thank's Phillip, and yes, you're doubt is absolutly in place regarding the pale blue color. i took the liberty to use another color as stated in the WNW manual. Tough it's not the correct one, the pale blue give's me a good feeling about the color choice.....but.......the spinner, and other stuff like, landing-gear strut's, cabane's and wing strut's will be in the pale green (Tamiya XF-76) color, and i'm afraid that will give to much contrast between the two color's.
Maybe i will repaint the hatches into the right color as provided in the WNW manual.
Thank's to point it out Phillip ;)

Hi guy's,
i'm back with some progress. Previous, i painted the hatches of the fuselage in a pale blue color, on it's own, it is not a bad color, but when i compared it with the Tamiya XF-76 color it was to much difference.
I needed a more suitable color so i repainted the hatches in US grey light.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0676_zps875f8840.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0676_zps875f8840.jpg.html)
Decals are placed onto the fuselage, and the Spandau machineguns are also glued on theire place.
This is the fuselage after decal placement, but still with the previous color on the hatches.

Hello Danny and welcome back.
The repainted hatches look great, although I thought they looked the part before, but; they still look great. The guns turned out perfect. Nicely detailed and the brass barrels add that extra touch. What I really noticed though was the engine. Wow! That really stands out; you did outstanding work on the engine and that will certainly enhance the already outstanding work you are doing on this model. Looking forward to the next update.

Time to put some more progress on this bird, but first, i have a question for you guy's and girl's.
Regarding the propellor, i am a little bit lost
The version i am building should have, according to the WNW instructions, an axial propellor (kitpart n° E24).
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0696_zps0498e085.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0696_zps0498e085.jpg.html)
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0693kopie_zpsb9490447.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0693kopie_zpsb9490447.jpg.html)
iff i am right, this should be a late war propellor. I have a photo of a late war Fokker DR.I from Jasta 14, that is also equiped with this sort propellor.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/FokkerDRI15_zpsf631bb79.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/FokkerDRI15_zpsf631bb79.jpg.html)
Now iff you guy's look good, you can see the Axial logo on this propellor. The same logo is included on the decal sheed, but for a strange reason WNW instructions mentioned that theire must be another logo should be applied to the propellor?? A german cross with some logo aside??
Now take a look at this photo, this is the actual plane i am building, and iff you take a closer look, you will see the German cross logo on his propellor, but, i doubth iff this is an axial propellor??
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0702_zps18ef14cc.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0702_zps18ef14cc.jpg.html)
and a closer look, at the tip of the propellor
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0700_zpse7b65d54.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0700_zpse7b65d54.jpg.html)
Could it be that WNW made an error regarding the choise of the propellor, or is it just me:mental:
Iff it should be the axial propellor, i think it would make sense to add the axial logo onto the propellor, but it could also be another propellor , in order to put the cross logo onto it.
Please guy's, help me to brainstorm this problem

i believe the props with the iron cross logos were manufactured by Germania
-
Don't know if that will help or get your more confused, but on a LF Models logo sheet I bought, the iron cross appears on the Garuda logo. Which doesn't mean there cannot be iron crosses on other prop brands logos, moreover...

Hi guy's,
i believe the props with the iron cross logos were manufactured by Germania
Thank's for the info Bo. ;)
Don't know if that will help or get your more confused, but on a LF Models logo sheet I bought, the iron cross appears on the Garuda logo. Which doesn't mean there cannot be iron crosses on other prop brands logos, moreover...
Thank's Vincent, you stated an idea, and yes, maybe it was a normal thing, to add german crosses to the logo's of the different manufacturers.
Now iff i compare the five different prop's to the photo, in the same angle, only one gave me enough sattisfaction, and that's according to the WNW instructions a Heine prop.
The kit's prop, in two different angles, in compare with the photo shown in the instructions book.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0715_zpsef677cd2.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0715_zpsef677cd2.jpg.html)

My dicission was quickly made that this was the prop, and therefore i used this.
For now, let's go further with the progress, slow.....but all thing's will come together nicely
I did some dry-fit of attaching the lower wing to the fuselage, together with the landing gear and wheels.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0703_zps196c0631.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0703_zps196c0631.jpg.html)

there's still need of much detailling and wheatering, but for now, all part's are painted in theire respectivly color's so the fun can begin.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0708_zps5f556072.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0708_zps5f556072.jpg.html)
The bungee cord's of the landinggear are allready finnished.

Thank's Bud for the nice comment. ;)
Hey guy's, i'm back with some more progress.
Today, i did some work on the wing's and fuselage and some part's, regarding the matt coat. For this i used Tamiya matt clear.
Also, the lower wing and landing gear was attached and glued to the fuselage.
Fuselage with lower wing after receiving it's matt coat.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0728_zpsb15fac06.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0728_zpsb15fac06.jpg.html)
Also attached the exhaust to the engine.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0729_zps12d3b372.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0729_zps12d3b372.jpg.html)

Engine cowl dry fitted to the fuselage, i don't know iff i will leaved this way, maybe i will redo the cowl.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0731_zps7be0c79c.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0731_zps7be0c79c.jpg.html)
After this was done, i made all eyelets for the attachment of the rigging, and glued them to the wing's.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0740_zps5e85b241.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0740_zps5e85b241.jpg.html)
For now, all pre-needed attachments are done, so it was time to glue the upper wing to the fuselage and lower wing. I was not very eager to do this, because off the proper alligment that was needed, but to my surprise, it fitted perfect, and together with that the alligment was perfect without the need of a jig, or device.

And, last progress of the day, the wooden propellor, my real first problem-child of this kit. Nothing to do with the quality of the kit part, but all with my skills of painting a wooden prop
Ok, i restarted this prop for about five time's before i could get this result.

A little progress regarding the prop.
This weekend i managed to put some work into the Roland, and for now i can say that this build slowly comes to a end. But some work is still needed to do, some detail painting and some more wheatering is needed before this bird can be rigged.
Today i finnished the prop. I gave it a gloss clear coat, and added the Germania decals.

Wow, very nice painting and weathering on your Roland. This is my favorite WW1 plane and your color scheme really shows off the wood and lozenge fabric. Also, I have to say, that's one of the nicest props I've seen! It's hard to believe that is not actually wood. I appreciate your perserverence on painting it five times until you were happy with it. That it a great lesson for us all. I would love to see a detailed build report on how you painted it. Were the laminations masked, freehand painted, etc.?

Absolutely beautiful, Danny! Looking forward to seeing her fully rigged.
Thank's Bud, i will start the rigging tommorow evening. but first i need to buy a fine pointed scissor, so first thing tommorow, goin to the pharmacy. ::)
Des, Ernie, Chriss and RAGIII, thank's guy's for the nice comments. ;)
George, thank you for the nice word's. I have to say, and this is thrue, that most of these techniques are used by me for the first time. W.W.1 planes are just that little more complexed iff it come's to the needed skills to achieve a good result, and for me, this was my very first build of a W.W.1 plane.
So you can called it an experimental build, because i didn't really know where to begin at the start of these build. Offcourse, my years of modeller sure gave me lot's of techniques that i could use in this build, but still, this need's another policy regarding W.W.1 planes.
I have enough prop's in reserve to give you guy's a full how-to, but i ask you guy's just to have a little patience, i will sure post one, but i need to find some time.
Thank's all for the kind word's

Hi guy's,
time to put some photo's overhere regarding the rigging of the Roland............with some delay, because i needed some fresh air, after two hours of rigging :o :o ......now i know for sure.....rigging is not for the weak hearted.
Ok, one side is mostly done, except for the aileron cables. I used Ushi standard rigging wire, and brass tube 0.5 m/m from Albion Alloys.
Turnbuckles are from GasPatch.
First, i started with the rigging between the landinggear, let's say, to get the feeling, and i must admitt, the first try-outs where a complete disaster.

I used the Ushi technique, and i must say, this is a very good way to get a nice rigging result.

Hi Guy's,
first i wanna say that i'm very pleased with the lot's of very nice comment's regarding this build. This gave me a lot's of courage. After all, this was my very first W.W.1 build ever.
Still theire need's to be some work done regarding the base plate (wich is drying at the moment after a primer coat), the pilot and the fuel cart who will stand besides the model. This is the reason why i'm not displaying the model in the finnished section of the forum, that will be preserved when the whole dio is done.

The comments are well deserved. I love the weathering and the aspect of printed fabric. It seems like you can smell oil, wood and fuel when watching the pics.

Thank's guy's for the very nice comment's. :D
At the moment i'm busy with the base plate, fuel cart and pilot figure, so theire is still some work to do before i can call it completly done.
regarding the base plate, i have something special in mind for it, so have a little patience, you will soon discover what it is ;D ;D

Today i put some work into the base plate. For this i had something special in my mind, so i started to put some layers of primer and a layer of Tamiya XF-23 Light blue.

As i had lot's of Lozenge decals in my spare box of the Roland kit, i decided to give them a destignation, so......the base plate is a good place to use these Lozenge decals.

The Lozenge camo, provided in the WNW kit's are beautifull, but i find the pattern a little hard, so i decided to tone down this a little bit.
For this i used XF-22 RLM Grey.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0829_zps1f270854.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0829_zps1f270854.jpg.html)

reason is, that i want to keep the attention to the diorama on the base, and not on the Lozenge at the edges of the base.
After that i put a layer of Tamiya Smoke to give the edges a rich appearance and at the same time a glossy surface. Maybe i will ad some very light wash to the edges, but i'm still thinking about that......anybody sugestions??

Absolutely beautiful work. Looks wonderful, you've really done it justice.
I love the Rolands, the planking effect on the fuselage adds to the wood feel. Your lozenge decals look outstandingly realistic, very fabric-like, and compliments the wood effect fuselage very well.
Good work that man! I will use this build thread when I get around to my D.VIa & D.VIb.

@ Nigel : Thank's mate for the nice comment. ;)
@ Dekenba : I'm glad my work has inspired you to take it as a example for you're future build's of the Roland. I'm looking forward to see you're Roland's take shape mate.

Ok, at the moment the base is getting a green carpet...........but still, it's obvious now, i'm not a great diorama builder, but i will do my best to give the Roland a suitable home:hmmm:
After i took a look at multiple pictures of W.W.1 airfields, i noticed that many where equiped with plank's lying on the ground, all different sort's and pattern's. So i decided to do it also......this is the result to begin with.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0838_zps1e3bb4f3.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0838_zps1e3bb4f3.jpg.html)
The white spot's are rest's of wood glue, that will be taken care off with some paint.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0839_zps72577a97.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0839_zps72577a97.jpg.html)
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0840_zpsb1876c8b.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0840_zpsb1876c8b.jpg.html)
After this, i put white sand on the surface to get a grainy texture. I airbrushed it with different sort's of brown colors, gave it multiple washes, and finnally, glued the gras onto the surface.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0846_zps90b2d5d8.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0846_zps90b2d5d8.jpg.html)
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0847_zps0e2f03ef.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0847_zps0e2f03ef.jpg.html)
The plank's are taken care of regarding the white spot's of glue.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0849_zps7296e351.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0849_zps7296e351.jpg.html)
The photo's above where taken with my camera flash. Next photo's are taken in daylight.
I had to glue the gras carpet in two half's, that's the reason that there is a blanc striped spot vissible. That will taken care of with some extra gras that i will glue at the blanc spot's.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0851_zpsfd3df915.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0851_zpsfd3df915.jpg.html)
The plank's are given different sort's of washes, to get a wheatered look. Some spaces between the plank's will filled up with dead gras or vegetation.
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r165/Davamoplanes/DSCN0854_zps06eb5b3e.jpg) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/Davamoplanes/media/DSCN0854_zps06eb5b3e.jpg.html)

Further vegetation will be added, but for now...that's all folk's
