Title: LVG C.VI Plywood and Canvas
Post by: miamiangler on March 23, 2014, 11:45:05 AM
Hj Guy`s

Time to start another WNW`s project . After having fun building the 1/48th Lloyd C.V . from Special Hobbies I`m going with a large plane to detail this time ! I started with doing some of the interior parts . giving the parts a coat of Tamiya Deck Tan then a wash of Burnt Sienna .

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n591/Miamiangler1/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN1020_zps2b4dffe9.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/Miamiangler1/media/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN1020_zps2b4dffe9.jpg.html)

I am going to try to improve the engine as much as I can . I don't like the way the rocker arms look and the springs are only a piece of plastic (ugly). I think the spark plugs are to large so they will be replaced with the ones from Taurus Models .

Well that`s all for today ,

You're off to a great start, Willi!  Your wood tones are very pleasing.  I have this kit and it's my favorite German two seater.  I look forward to picking up some pointers from you.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks everyone for the replies .

I will do the best I can with this build . I`m going to try to detail the LVG using the restorations in France and Belgium. I added some e-z line to the control stick which works the ailerons . I had to drill holes on each side that was not there .

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n591/Miamiangler1/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN1028_zps4b004221.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/Miamiangler1/media/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN1028_zps4b004221.jpg.html)

I repositioned the parts in the rear of the aircraft as it is seen in the Memorial Flight Photo`s .
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n591/Miamiangler1/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN1029_zps74dacd92.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/Miamiangler1/media/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN1029_zps74dacd92.jpg.html)

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n591/Miamiangler1/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN1030_zpse33fa1fe.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/Miamiangler1/media/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN1030_zpse33fa1fe.jpg.html)

Using the photo`s of MF I detail the fuel tank and seat . I drilled all the lightening holes on the seat by hand . I use some tape and filler to make the leather over lap of the seat . under the seat are two wood strips that are showing . I still have to add rivet detail in which I will use Archer Transfers( ON ORDER). I added some PE and Plastic details . I used .5mm tubing for the gas line that goes to the engine  . I will use .010 mm lead wire for the gas line which will be added later .

Hello Willi:

Great start on the kit.  As you know this was in WNW first batch.  After building some of their latest releases and going back to this, the modeler can see how they (WNW) have improved the detail on their kits.  I am sure if this kit came out today, the rocker arm springs would be more detailed as would the rocker arms.  It makes for a fun build.  With the engine sticking out like that, if you have any of the later kist, Pfalz DXII, Fokker DVII's, there are engine numbers on the decal sheets that you could use to put on the front cylinder to dress it up a bit.
Great job so far, I like your wood tones and the seat/fuel tank is looking mighty good.
Looking forward to your progress on this one.

Best

Mark

Thanks Guy`s ,

I trying to get over the flu bug so not much has been done . I did get the fuel tank done .Today I got the Archer transfer rivets and small nuts and bolts . I am also working on the hand fuel pump which will be installed on part A62 . I redid part A36 so the back of the seat can be seen as the photo from the Memorial Flight Museum . I used lead wire for fuel lines .010 and nuts .5mm .

Thank you for everyone`s  the kind remarks .

Well  I did some more work on interior parts . While not quiet 100% correct I try to get it as close as I can . I`m getting lots of great ideas from all the awesome builds on this site . I`m still trying to figure out if the fuel lines where actually white as seen on the photos from Memorial Flight

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nrVblusjv0s/TawMeYkbFHI/AAAAAAAAAoM/lvbDHQe7k7w/s1600/P1010701.jpg

I modified the panel so the PE foot holds will be seen . I built the fuel hand pump and added a door which still needs to be painted . I will be adding a compass which I will steal from one of my Fokker DVII kits.

Thanks Rick  (RAGIII),

I am really enjoying this kit ! glad I have one more in my stash .

I also what to say a very big Thank You to Richard (bstachel) from Aviattic. The package arrived yesterday with some awesome decals and resin parts . The decals should be a very big improvement then the ones from WNW`s .I plan  to start on the wings once I get the cockpit and engine done .The resin priming cups will give the engine even a  more realistic look .

Hello Willi:

Your interior is coming along nicely, flu bug notwithstanding!  Your fuel tank and all the extra plumbing really looks the business and will definitely add interest to the cockpit.  The wing decaling is extremely tedious.  I have done two of these, and on the second one, I did the wings first, just so I didn't have to be tedioused out by the time I got to them.  I used the W&W decals and it really dressed up the wings.  I used the blue tapes, just because, well......just because I felt like it.  Authentically they should be the light colored ones.
Looking forward to seeing you work through this and how your interior comes out.  I wish I had one more!   :-\

Best

Mark

Thanks Mark,

My flu bug is gone . A week of hell and loss of work ! I did try to get some things done but was slow . Spending lots of time looking at interior photo`s of LVG`s . Looks like they all had small differences . As for the wings I am on hold until I see the PE and masks I get from my friend in Poland . I got the second LVG on e-bay 150 dollars with free shipping .I thought that was a good deal .

 Cheers ,

       Thank You ,
Mietec ,I`m still waiting for the Package from Tomek . I love the Storch you did in Swiss markings .It looks awesome !I may do that scheme with  a 1/32 scale plane I have . It`s better then the green scheme`s !

I hope to have the cockpit completed this week , I added a few more details which took more time but hope the results will improve the plane .. most might not be seen . I stole the compass from my Albi .

Thanks Bo ,

It wont be seen . It happened by accident . I left the alcohol on with out drying it off . I sprayed the tank in a few layers .Tamiya Flat black then Titanium gold another coat of black then a coat of Vallejo bright brass then gloss black .I let it dry for an hour then with a brush put Tamiya thinner in a few spots and brushed off the paint lightly till I liked the way it looked .

Thank You Des ,

I think I put enough into the interior. Here`s more photo`s of what I did . In the rear cockpit I made the container that the copper wire went into . I forgot to take a photo of it but I did make one in a smaller scale which will go into the Blue Max LVG whenever I get to build that kit :). I added the compass and some wiring in the rear with the control cables . Only question I have is can I close the top over the cockpit with out installing the gun ?

I will be adding sparkplugs from TaurusModels and some plumbing from bass tubes ,plastic rods and lead fly fishing wire . So far I have completed the springs which are made from lead wire . Hope to have photo`s soon ! Camera batteries died!

Thank You Des ,

Only question I have is can I close the top over the cockpit with out installing the gun ?

Hi Willi:
If you mean the forward pointing gun, yes you can.  Just don't forget to put it in before attaching the top wing.  Rigging the cabane struts can be real finicky.  If you rig the center mount and then as you are attaching it to the cabane struts run the rigging material through the pre-placed eyelets, it will save a  lot of headache.  So you need to hold the center section with one hand and run the rigging through the eyelets with the other.  It can be done.  You just need extra long runs of material to do it.
Hope this helps.
The interior is really looking awesome.  There is a lot you can see when it is buttoned up.  Sadly not much of the fuel tank is visible.

Best

Mark

Thanks Dric,

Still lots to do with the engine !Thanks to Mietek I have some of the PE parts from Wojtec Fajga. I wouldlike to know if anyone here has experience on how to make PE parts . I would like to reproduce some parts like the rocker arms for the engine . They would be useful for the new Roland DVIa.

I have the fuselage closed up and have been working on the wood work on the bottom . I forgot to mention this will be the Polish aircraft that was flown by Wladyslaw Dittmer.

I should have some photo`s posted by next week once the oils have dried .

                        Thanks ,Willi

I've done it, see here: http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=328.1005

I didn't photograph the process step by step, but I did provide a kind of overview.

The process involves some fairly nasty chemicals, you don't want kids or pets or food around. It also involves a fair bit of trial and error. But I found it to be rather fun and rewarding and I got some nice parts out of it.

Where did you get the etching kit ?

Micromark:
US Version
http://www.micromark.com/micro-mark-pro-etch-photo-etch-system,8346.html

Export Version (you source your own chemicals, see below):
http://www.micromark.com/micro-mark-pro-etch-photo-etch-system-export-version,8347.html

Quote
NOTE: To make your Pro-Etch System suitable for international shipping, two of the chemicals required for use of the system have been removed from the Export Version. To use the Pro-Etch System, you will need to purchase these chemicals locally.

The ETCHANT chemical is Ferric Chloride, commonly used in the electronics industry. This chemical is used at full strength in the etching process.

The DEVELOPER / STRIPPER chemical is Sodium Hydroxide, which should be obtained in powdered or pellet form. For use in the system, this chemical must be mixed with water to a concentration of 5% by weight. Example: 1 US gallon weighs 8.337 lbs. To make 1 gallon Developer / Stripper solution, slowly add 0.416 lbs. of Sodium Hydroxide powder/pellets to 1 gallon of water to achieve the required 5% concentration.

Thanks Rick ,

I am not as skilled as some of the forum members but I`m trying ! While I have been working on the engine the last four day`s I have been trying to get the wood work done on the bottom of the fuselage .I read the way Uschi Van Rosen paints the wood grain on by brush. I used his tutorial but instead of brushing on the wood grain I used PE masks .

Willi,
The top of your engine is spectacular, really nice work. I also like the wood grain on the fuselage, I have the masks but have not tried them as yet. It looks like you blended in the darker grain on the base colour or does the photo show the pattern as sprayed? Either way, nice work!
Cheers,
Lance

Hi Lance ,

You have to practice using the masks . I used a base color of Buff and Deck tan. The mask works better if it is a little off the part you want to spray . I used a brown for the wood grain . It looks ugly and some areas the grain did not go on as I would have liked, but after you go over with the oils it looks better . I used Burnt Sienna and Ochre .I made three different mixes and blended them .You do see the pattern it just does not show well in the photos .

Thank You everyone ,

I still have not hooked up the ignition wires yet so not sure if the engine will run .

It`s been a while since I did anything on the LVG . I started working on the wings . Primed and painted . I used masks and tape for the Polish markings . I was not sure if the decals would hold up to the masking so I paint the markings first . Now the fun will begin !

Hello everyone ,

It`s been a year since I posted anything . Other hobbies took over .Most of it are my 4 reef tanks which is a 24/7 job!

I finally started back on this project .It will be slow going so bare with me ! I hope you like what I have done so far .

I gave the model a coat of white and then a yellow base coat of primer.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n591/Miamiangler1/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN0255_zpsuhr6b6or.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/Miamiangler1/media/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN0255_zpsuhr6b6or.jpg.html)

I started to mask and add the 5 colors

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n591/Miamiangler1/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN0258%202_zpsnbgx98n6.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/Miamiangler1/media/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN0258%202_zpsnbgx98n6.jpg.html)

I color matched the colors to the decals which was sent to me by Aviattic. I did a test of the decals on the elevator before I did the color match . I have to say the decals go on well with no problems and look great! I defiantly will be using his decals from now on !

How was the cutting of those masks done? Did you use some kind of plotter (means: a computerized solution), or did you mark and cut yourself (no, not cut yourself, maybe you know what I mean, possibly "cut on your own?" Sounds awkward as well...)

Anyway - how did you do that?

Stefan

Hello everyone,

Thank you for the kind words . The painting of the lozenges are addicting!. I am on day three and still a lot to do ! there`s over 100+masks ! I am doing 10-15 a day with 4 different colors with  (yellow base color) . checking and touch up as I go , I hope to have it done by the end of the week .

  @stefanbuss,

I was lucky to get everything I need from a member here miecio52 which deserves a very big THANK YOU ! I think he knows or had contact to wojtek fajga  who did the mask and I am following parts of his build which he did in 2009. It`s his masks I am using. The Germans painted the lozenge  on the Aircraft during WW1 . The Polish added the eye motiv and their markings .

Well here`s some more photo`s of the lozenges . It`s taking a little longer because of the storm that didn't happen( Ericka ).  Did manage to do some more over the weekend . I did spray the cross on both sides . The masks I had were wrong  they were backwards so I had to measure and tape each one . Still have some more to go near the tail . Hope you enjoy the photo`s .

Hello everyone ,

I`m glad everyone likes the lozenge work . I finally got the painting done !Looking forward to doing the Hanover ! I started to decal the markings instead od spraying them on and this is what happened !

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n591/Miamiangler1/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN0277%202_zpsvbdekgld.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/Miamiangler1/media/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN0277%202_zpsvbdekgld.jpg.html)

Instead of checking twice I just put the decals on and let them dry ! I did not notice the mistake until I took the photo :( the Tail marking is correct but the other ones are side ways . Well I only had two decals of the correct size :(.  Now I have to use the masks ! After a couple of hours (2days) I corrected the mistake .

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n591/Miamiangler1/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN0292%202_zpsvjl5fogg.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/Miamiangler1/media/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN0292%202_zpsvjl5fogg.jpg.html)

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n591/Miamiangler1/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN0290%202_zpsp54xks46.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/Miamiangler1/media/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN0290%202_zpsp54xks46.jpg.html)

I started work on the gunners ring by adding small rivets to the gun mount and trying to make the gun ring look like it was made with four pieces of wood .With the glossy look it is hard to see . Once it is finished it will be toned down with some flat and semi to give it an eggshell look .

Thank you Des ,

With all the colors involved it took quite a while ! The tail marking is the only decal I had of polish marking that was the right size . the masks all looked a little small when comparted to the photos of Polish LVG`s . The Decals where also I one shot deal .The white markings in the port side broke into 10 pieces and took me close to an hour to make them look right .

@ Terri Thanks for your reply much appreciated

@ Martin Thanks for your comment.

I am finished with the prop. I tried to get it close to the photo . It only show the back of the prop so the front is guessing . I read in one of Rick`s posts on his aircraft he wanted to see both sides of the prop so here it is ;)

HAPPY NEW YEAR   :) !

Thank you for all the replies I`m glad everyone approves of the build so far. This week I worked on the radiator and brackets holding up the upper wings . I was going to use the PE set for the radiator  but I did not think it would be strong enough to hold the wings in the correct position . I might be wrong but I did not want to have droopy wings ! I made the radiator pull thingy out of brass and added the fuel lines for the wing. I made eyelets for the rigging and used the turnbuckles from RD . Rigging the inner part was hell of a lot of FUN  ::) .

Thanks Des ,

The bottom of the planes woodwork was done with RB`s wood stencils .I used two different stencils that RB produces . The prop I used small strips of tape after three tries and a week of going blind I finally got it to look half way decent .

@ Gregory and Martin Thanks for your comments much appreciated !

I worked on the engine to finish up the wiring and do a little weathering on it. I  Think it came out O.K.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n591/Miamiangler1/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN0413_zpslvmejbgr.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/Miamiangler1/media/LVG%20C%20VI%20Polish%20Markings/DSCN0413_zpslvmejbgr.jpg.html)

Now for the Problem ! The engine has to be fitted before the front cowling goes on ! I had to do some cutting of plastic to get it to fit into the tub . It is a good thing I used water based glue first to mount the cowling . I had to cut a little of the wood brace to get the engine to drop into place . . before the engine gets mounted I have to work on the radiator pipes which is the next part of the project .

Here`s the engine drop fitted to the LVG .No glue yet !

Thank You For all the comments ,

Today I have the wings ready for decaling . I hope the pre-shading is going to work . To give it a more worn look . with the newly painted Polish markings . Since the Polish acquired the plane in 1919 I think?

Thanks Des and Rick,

I hope the shading will work ! I have a busy couple of days so I will leave the decaling for when I have more time . Don't want to rush with the decaling many little pieces and have to be cut right !.

Got the engine lubrication tank done all that has to be added is the pipe to the engine

@ Icarroll Thanks , I really love this scheme I have been wanting to do this one for years after seeing it on the Aerodrome forum.

@ Jeroen,Thanks I glad you like it !

@Umlaufmotor ,Thanks Bertl, I have to say I love how you see detail that I miss ! I only hope I can get as good as you .Your work is amazing

@ RagIII ,Thanks Rick , I am trying to get the front office done right since it is out in the open . I just have to figure out the port side fuel lines ,fuel pump, some black box next to the engine with a pilot control lever that has a fuel line going to the fuel pump ! Would be cool if I could see the real plane but it is a few thousand miles away from MIami:)

Well good luck to all playing Power Ball tonight  ! 4hours to go!!!
