Title: Sopwith Snipe Early - Wingnut Wings 1/32
Post by: TomR1981 on March 21, 2014, 11:12:07 PM
Hello everyone.

I haven't posted much on here for a while but am always following most of the builds on here, there's lots of inspiration to be had from this forum.
I've been working on this kit for a while and it goes together nicely. It's pretty much OOB, although I have the HGW super detail set and have used the seat belt and PE bracing wires on the cockpit.

Here are a few unflattering macro shots of what I have so far.

Bentley BR-2, still needs some castor oil staining:

Cockpit, the decals for the instruments are incredible:

Gee Tom, I sure hope mine turns out looking so good! ;)  Really oustanding paint work and weathering on these interior components.  Keep up the fine work!

Cheers,

Very good work, Tom.  Your wood colours are first-rate, as is the engine.  With a little
staining it will look even better.  Thanks for sharing your efforts!   I look forward to
more updates.

Hello Tom:

I echo the sentiments of the others.  Very well done.  I especially like your work on the seat.  Looks like wicker.  The seat belts look nice as well.  Like Lance, this is up next on the list and I will be following along as well.

Thanks for all the kind words and thanks everyone for following along.

I have the fuselage closed now, once it's cleaned up a bit I'll take some more pictures.

Mark and Lance, I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the Snipe. It's a great kit and I know you'll both do it justice.

Cheers

The fuselage went together nicely and is now ready for decals. I went with PC12 as I like the brown colour. The Ds were masked and painted.

Hi Tom:

I really like the work you are doing here especially the metal affect on the cowlings.  Really turned out nice and will be a show stopper for sure.  Your seat belts really look convincing as does the rest of the build.  I haven't seen grass for so long I almost forgot what it was when I saw your picture.
Good luck in Holland and looking forward to seeing your next update when you get back.

Mark and Lance, North America certainly seemed to hog all the snow this winter. I think I'll have to head across the pond next year (my other hobby is snowboarding). I made it through the whole winter without ever needing a jacket!
Absolutely stunning, and Quick, work! I am behind you now in the build process and started well before  :-[
RAGIII

Rick, it's not as quick as it looks! I had been working on the cockpit for a while before I posted the first photos. Also I'm not building an Albatros at the same time!

I've been home for a week now and made a bit of progress, here's the latest. Starting to look like a Snipe now. Engine, cowling and top decking are still just dry fitted.
Cowling finally painted, not perfect but I think it looks alright. I'll be taking a break from turned cowlings for a while now I think. I managed to lose one of the elevator control horns and had to raid the late Snipe kit. I've emailed WNW for a replacement but it'll be a while before I build the late Snipe.

Beautiful and neat work Tom!  I, too, would like to hear about your technique for the turned cowling.  Your spacing is very uniform, which really makes the metal areas stand out. ;D  Very nicely done!  By the way, the rest of the aircraft looks great too. ;)

Post by: TomR1981 on April 16, 2014, 04:20:03 AM
Thanks everybody! It's always nice to get some praise from such talented modellers.

My cowling technique was pretty easy, but very laborious. I drew a grid on some Tamiya tape, taped over clear plastic from one of those stationery envelopes to act as backing paper. Using a punch and die set I then punched holes in at all the corners and in the middle of each square in the grid. That gave me the same pattern as the Snipe I'm modelling and looks about in scale to me too. Using tape you can do a few layers at once and speed up the process. It still takes ages though!

That was good for the top decking and the sides of the fuselage and cowling but obviously the rows converge on the front of the cowling, so that I did row by row. I started using Tamiya tape which has a little bit of transparency, then realised frisket film is a much better choice as it's clear so you can see to place it  more easily.

I used a base of Alclad duralumin and sprayed the dots with Alclad white aluminium. Using Alclad means it can be remasked and sprayed again in a few minutes if you've had the patience to punch out enough masks beforehand (I didn't).

Cheers

Tom

Well it looks the biz. I just enlarged your photo. I've done the cowling in chrome before. I wonder if a silver felt tip might do the same effect? I'll try it.

Thanks to everybody who's commented on this build, the support is really appreciated. I do think WNW make it easy to get good results though. This is a great kit with plenty of detail OOB.

Here's the latest. The bottom wing is now on and the tail feathers are on and rigged. There's a lot of work in this area, and the fin and rudder can be quite fiddly but all very satisfying once it's done. I should be able to get the top wing on over the next day or two. Not far to go now.

Thanks Mark. I'm glad you like the preshading, I tried to keep it subtle and I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. For the upper surfaces I just drybrushed the rib tapes to highlight the stitching.

Another trip to work this evening and rather than pack my bags and getting ready I have been rigging the Snipe. My taxi is now about ¾hour away, oops. Just time for this quick update.
Once I get back home I'll paint the rigging and add the rest of the parts and weather it. It's been fun.

Almost done now, propeller, cowling, Aldis sight and bomb carrier are all that's left to go on.

Castor oil staining on the bottom wing was done with oil paint and I'm not really happy with it, next time I'll do something with the airbrush. It is underneath though, so I'm not losing any sleep over it.

So just the above mentioned parts to get finished and attached, a few touch ups and this one will be done

The oil staining is OUTSTANDING! I like the "soaked in" effect closer to the wing roots; looks identical to the stains we see in some of Jamo's photos of TVAL Aircraft. Nicely done and a beautiful Build overall.
