Hi all,
Made a start today on the newly arrived Gaspatch Models 1/48 Salmson 2A2 (mid-type)... glad to be jumping back into a 1/48 scale kit, given I didn't build anything in this scale last year (or much of anything in any scale, to be honest....). My aim is to build this kit straight out of the box; given the comprehensive content of this kit it should be a fun build.
I thought I would start at the front end instead of the usual cockpit. The kit contains the options of having the engine cowls on or off, and as such the kit contains a lovely radial engine. The engine comprises of around 50 pieces, so it is a mini-kit in itself, with lots of the parts count being taken up with the various bits of tubing, wiring and push-rods. It goes together surprisingly well, though there are some solid and inconvenient pour stubs to deal with, and some very tight tolerance fits for the etched pieces.

And with the exhaust ring and radiator dry fitted:

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/bradcancian/Salmson%202A2/Sal03_zps8c8e760e.jpg)(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/bradcancian/Salmson%202A2/Sal05_zps08022a7d.jpg)
I'm not overly happy with the exhaust ring painting that I have done, but looking at photos a dark and dull colour that blends in with the forward cowl paint seems to be appropriate.
Next is onto the cockpit. All feedback welcomed :)

It's great to see one of these kits being build but it is even better to know that it is you Brad, who is building it. The engine looks spectacular, the detail appears to be uncompromised and your painting is superb, this build is going to be a real treat to watch.

Beautifully done engine, Brad. I really like the colour & wear on the cowling.
I'm looking forward to more updates.
Cheers,

Hello Brad:
Impressive work for a day! I think the it all looks great! The cowling weathering and wear looks the business and will certainly add interest to the front end. Looking forward to seeing you work through this one. Mark (Guitarlute) is working on the WNW kit so it will be fun to follow along these two builds.

Brad,
Great work on the Engine and Cowl! Looks Terrific as always!

It is great to see you, Brad, back to the bench! A very fine start to this project! I will surely use your shots of the engine when I will start my WNW Salmson. Looking forward to see more.
As for the exhaust ring, I do not see anything wrong with it - looks just spot on!

Ditto to Prze's comments !

Thanks folks!
Been getting some of the more 'tiresome' things out of the way, for example, the guns. I usually leave these things until last and they seem like a chore, so I thought I would get them out of the way early....

Nice work on the engine and guns! They look extremely well. I will follow your under construction thread cause I just couldn` t resist and ordered one.
-
Wonderful work on the guns, Brad. Very well done!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

The guns and engine look fantastic! I treated myself to a couple of these kits for Christmas and I have not managed to open the box they came in yet.

Awesome work there Brad.

Very slow progress. Cockpit is now done, again out of the box except for the turn buckle sleeves and the odd artistic decal here and there. The kit cockpit is quite comprehensive straight out of the box, and all fits snugly. I still have some control runs to do but i'll finish these when the whole assembly comes together.

Superb modelling, Brad!
Now run that on a loop so I can have a rest from saying it! lol ;D

Hello Brad:
Excellent work on the interior. I like your use of oils and highlighting on the cabane struts; very effective and eye catching. Your work will be referenced when I tackle the WNW kit.

Lovely work, as always, Brad. Any chance of you getting down to ScaleACT this year? I know Phil and the boys would be chuffed if they could get some of your models on display for the Great War theme.

Thanks folks! :)
Dal - probably won't get any models down to the ACT show, it's a bit of a hike from Brisbane! Might try and find an excuse to head down the weekend of the show though... ;D
I now have the fuselage closed up.
The interior is a tight squeeze - the easiest way I found in the end was to glue the two fuselage halves together first to minimise the gaps for clean up, then slot the centre part in afterwards. This was also tricky as the struts need to slot into the correct position without snagging on any of the wires or other interior components. The camera extends past the back end of the floor piece, and the whole lot needs to slide backwards once it's roughly in place (if I build this model again I will add the camera in after the fuselage sides and floor is in). It took me a few goes and a few broken bits of rigging later to get it into the correct place. The mating edges of the centre floor piece to the fuselage sides is angled to a knife edge right at the bottom edge of the fuselage, which means you need to use glue sparingly. It's also tricky to get the floor flush with the fuselage sides and underside, so I found a little filler was needed here (though not too much). The upper decking "shelf" in the cockpit also needs to slide around the struts and the forward cockpit components. It was also a tight squeeze so I needed to do some trimming here and there to get the shelf to sit flush. Likewise the upper fuselage parts needed to slide around the struts, and took some persuasion to get in the right spot and a little filler here and there, but again nothing too dramatic.
Next is the wings. This is a simple butt-joint with a small tab which I don't think will hold up too well. I might try and pin the wings but the join is right on that knife-edge I spoke of earlier so I am worried I might split open the join or dislodge cockpit components if I try this.... :-\ One nice touch though is that there's a wing alignment jig supplied.

Your Salmson build is moving along quite nicely Brad but it does sound as though you had a few tense moments fitting the internals, I'm glad it all worked out well for you, looking forward to seeing what she looks like with some wings on.
Des.

Very, very, very slow going.... have some paint on her now. I went with the OOB markings for the USAS 1st Aero Squadron. Kit decals were very nice, but were difficult to move when I tried to position them. If you're going to use the kit decals, float them onto the model with plenty of water.

Thanks folks, you are too kind! :)
This morning I have been working on the laborious task of preparing the wing struts. I used clear decal paper painted silver and cut into strips for the reinforcing straps on the struts. Much easier than painting by hand...!

Now the most daunting bit of the build is over - the top wing is on.
I always dread this stage of the build, especially with multi-bay aircraft like the Salmson (that top wing is heavy in 1/48!) as it has the potential to go very bad very fast. I started by rigging the main wing cellules before I glued the top wing on, and enlargening the strut holes in the upper wing before I glued it on. I started by gluing the cabane struts then worked my way out and had minimal problems. This kit is well engineered - sigh of relief :)

Really beautiful job. I love the painting and the shading on the upper wing. For the strut straps, you could also use stripes of adhesive aluminum foil.

Excellent results Brad! Lovely rigging!

Inspirational work, Brad! Thank you for taking point on this one. With each update, I'm learning more on how to tackle this one myself. The colors are perfect. What paints did you use for the 5 color camo?

gorgeous as usual brad.

A very good work Brad.

Hi Bud - colours were all mixed from Gunze acrylics, roughly as follows:
Underside - 80% H85 Sail Colour, 10% H413 Yellow, 10% H11 White
Beige - 80% H85 Sail Colour, 20% H71 Middle Stone
L/Green - 80% H312 Green FS34227, 10% H73 Dark Green, 10% H85 Sail Colour
D/Green - 100% H73 Dark Green
Brown - 100% H84 Mahogany
Black - 85% Black, 15% H85 Sail Colour
The model is getting pretty close to being done, fingers crossed she'll be cooked tomorrow.... :o
