Hi!
After building the FE2B I've decide to do a german plane, the Roland D.VI.
I've decide to go for this scheme of jasta 23b, as I want to have some wood exposed
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r01/th_Content_02_zpsa02f9559.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r01/Content_02_zpsa02f9559.jpg.html)
I've discussed this scheme here http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=2052.0 and I think that I'll do the red band
as you can see I'll use Wood&wire lozenge decals, Gaspatch buckles and Taurus valve gear and intake manifold nuts.
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r01/th_Content_01_zpsa256cca2.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r01/Content_01_zpsa256cca2.jpg.html)
let' start with the engine
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r01/th_Resin_01b_zps1cf7dcb6.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r01/Resin_01b_zps1cf7dcb6.jpg.html) (http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r01/th_Resin_02_zpsa48447bf.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r01/Resin_02_zpsa48447bf.jpg.html)
Clearly an improvement!
here's with some more parts
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r02/th_Engine_01_zpsaeb9a872.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r02/Engine_01_zpsaeb9a872.jpg.html)
it still needs drybrush, weathering small details, ecc... For now Ihave only added the spark plugs.
If you want more pictures of the resin add-ons just let me know.
meanwhile I've started to work also on the cockpit.

The W&W decals are very good, but are very thin and need some attention
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r02/th_Decalapp_03_zps3eb20cbd.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r02/Decalapp_03_zps3eb20cbd.jpg.html) (http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r02/th_Decalapp_04_zps77ed2e5d.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r02/Decalapp_04_zps77ed2e5d.jpg.html)
Some shading added with oils.
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r03/th_Wing_02_zpscc5b3980.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r03/Wing_02_zpscc5b3980.jpg.html) (http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r03/th_Wing_03_zps51e7eba7.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r03/Wing_03_zps51e7eba7.jpg.html) (http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r03/th_Wing_04_zpsd00eae2a.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r03/Wing_04_zpsd00eae2a.jpg.html)
The underwing need some retouches (allready done). next time I'll clear coat the decals as soon I've finshed to pose them.
On the upper wing you can see the paint over the old eisernkreuz
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r03/th_Wing_01_zps55f222a9.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r03/Wing_01_zps55f222a9.jpg.html)
that's all for now.
I hope you like it

Andrea,
Brilliant work so far, the wood is very nicely done and I like the "used" or worn look you've achieved in the cockpit while still keeping it relatively clean. More pictures for sure, this is going to be "pretty to watch"!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Very impressive start! Your wood in the interior is awesome! Looking forward to more!!
RAGIII

Excellent start on what's certain to be a brilliant model, Andrea. Your wood grain, pre-shading and lozenge application are all outstanding. Looking forward to the next update.
Cheers,
Bud

Hi!
Thank you for yours nice comments.
I've started to add spark plugs wires to the engine (boring work..) ::)
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r04/th_engine_02_zps9da06f43.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r04/engine_02_zps9da06f43.jpg.html)
I've tried to reproduce the intake wrapping using copper wire and putty. I like the effect, in the pictures looks a bit overdone, but in real life is more realistic. I think that I need to work more on the color...
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r04/th_intake_01_zps2f69e81b.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r04/intake_01_zps2f69e81b.jpg.html)
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r04/th_engine_01_zps9edc8b5d.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r04/engine_01_zps9edc8b5d.jpg.html)
An assembly test:
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r04/th_Assembly_01_zpsf2ed1a40.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r04/Assembly_01_zpsf2ed1a40.jpg.html)
I've started to paint the fuselage. I've started before joining the two halves because the engine must be installed before closing the fuselage, so painting after joining means that a lot of masking should be made around the engine.
In this way I'll have only to do small retouches on the underside and from the cokpit backward, without needing massive masking. All the weathering will be added when the fuselage is assembled and all painted.
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r04/th_paint_01_zpsba061102.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r04/paint_01_zpsba061102.jpg.html)
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r04/th_paint_02_zps3888a752.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r04/paint_02_zps3888a752.jpg.html)
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r04/th_Assembly_02_zps10686588.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r04/Assembly_02_zps10686588.jpg.html)
The gap in the last picture is not realistic (also the ruined area over the tailplane is already corrected), if you press together the two halves the fitting is perfect ;D here I 've also made some preshading as a base for the wood finish on the fuselage. It has a little bit too much contrast, I'll paint over a light layer of the base color
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r04/th_Assembly_03_zps23f5a990.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r04/Assembly_03_zps23f5a990.jpg.html)
That's all for today :)

Very impressive, Andrea. Fine job on the engine. Also your rendition of wood is very convincing.
I will be watching your thread with great interest as Roland is in my plans for this year.

You are doing Awesome work on your DVI! Your paint work and decaling are top notch!

Thanks!
I would like to know what do you think of the intake wrapping... is an experiment . ::)

Wonderful progress in your build, Andrea. The cockpit is amazing, particularly the
floorboards. The engine is great. As for the lagging, with my limited experience I
think it looks really nice. I don't know if it should be more uniform or not, so I'll leave
it to those with more experience in such things. The thing I do know is it's an
extremely pleasing time watching your amazing work. I look forward to more
updates.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hi!
Some updates.
The original aircraft had 2 reinforcements around the aileron commands:
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/05/th_WingreinfO_zps5421811a.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/05/WingreinfO_zps5421811a.jpg.html)
I've reproduced them with plasticard. They are a little different because the position of the holes on the model compared to the ribs is different from the real plane (and the right one is 1mm longer than the left one... ::) ).
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/05/th_Wingreinf_zps0d0963dc.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/05/Wingreinf_zps0d0963dc.jpg.html)
The model is also missing the mg supports on the instrument panel. I've made them from metal, now I've to add the screws and other details.
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/05/th_MGsupport_01_zps26bfa19e.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/05/MGsupport_01_zps26bfa19e.jpg.html) (http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/05/th_MGsupport_02_zpsf42df53d.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/05/MGsupport_02_zpsf42df53d.jpg.html)
I've added a light brown wash to the fuselage to give it asome depth before working with oils. In these pictures the top part doesn't have the wash, so you can see the difference (you can see also some errors to retouch.. ;D ).
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/05/th_Fusewash_03_zps172e53f4.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/05/Fusewash_03_zps172e53f4.jpg.html)

In the last 2 images I've worked some more to differentiate the single planks
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/05/th_Fusewash_04_zps992eaf2e.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/05/Fusewash_04_zps992eaf2e.jpg.html)

Looking great Andrew, that planking effect works extremely well!
-
Very, very fine model unveiling! I like the woodpaint especially.
Could you give some details, how have you shaded the wings along the ribs? W&W decal instruction suggests shading of the undersurface before decalling. Have you followed this hint?

I've shaded the wing after decalling with oil paint (you can see an image in the first post)
I've done some tests with preshading, but is difficult to choose the right amount. The W&W are very transparent , so it's easy to overdo it or keep it too subtle. With the decals remaining after the build I'll do some more tests to have a reference for the next time.
An example with a test
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r02/th_Decalapp_02_zpsa76a026a.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r02/Decalapp_02_zpsa76a026a.jpg.html)
In real life is just visible, tomorrow I'll post another test where the shading is too much visible
Andrea
-
Many thanks, Andrew. I am planning to build a Roland with W&W lozenge later this year and try to gather people's experience on shading.
-
You have done a superb job with the planking Andrew, and the lozenge looks very good as well.
Des.

I am completely in awe of the way you have done the planking, Andrea. Could
you tell me what paints you used for the base and highlighted darker areas? The
wash you mentioned...was it with oils? You are building a stunning model and with
the paint scheme you have chosen I have no doubts that it will be a real show-stopper.
Forgive all the questions but I have no experience painting a wooden fuselage and could
really use a few tips. :-[ :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)

thanks!
For the planks I have used a pale yellow lifecolor for the base (don't remeber the exact name, I'll check it).
Then I have painted some color changes and the planks joints with a dark brown (always lifecolor) quite diluited.
At this point there was too much contrast so I oversprayed a light coat of the base color to blend all.
At this point I have made a light wash with oil color (you can use the washing technique you prefer...)
Then I've added some more details with dark brown. The last step will be to add a final layer with oils applied with a sponge like I've done on the interiors.
you can see some details of the real aircraft

I hope is all clear, if you want to know something else just ask ;)

Thanks so much Andrea...that is a great help!

Andrew,
Your woodwork is magnificent as is the rest of the model. I have this one in my stash and will certainly be checking back to this Thread when I build it.
I choose the Wood and Wire lozenge with a white base to hopefully make the shading (post-shading in this case) simpler. Your pre-shading looks to be working very well, I hope I haven't made the wrong choice.
I am enjoying following your progress on this Build, nice work!
Cheers,
Lance

On the models I've used a cdl color as a base for the lozenge...I think that white is too strong, but it's up to you, you can make some test with a small piece of decal.

Hi!
Not much work even this week but something is going on.
First I've added the seatbelts. I've annealed them over a flame, draped over the seat, painted and added some shadows with oils.
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r06/th_harness_01_zpsda312e1d.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r06/harness_01_zpsda312e1d.jpg.html) (http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r06/th_harness_02_zps9a51420d.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r06/harness_02_zps9a51420d.jpg.html)
I've also glued the enigne inside the fuselage and added some wires. i didn' go mad here because will be almost invisible at the end with the fuselage closed
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r06/th_Enginew_02_zps7fcdd467.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r06/Enginew_02_zps7fcdd467.jpg.html) (http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r06/th_Enginew_01_zps37345cd5.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r06/Enginew_01_zps37345cd5.jpg.html)
I've assembled the MGs
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r06/th_Mg_01_zps11fab2eb.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r06/Mg_01_zps11fab2eb.jpg.html)
I've started to prepare the turnbuckles for the rigging.
The Gaspatch metal turnbuckles are wonderful!!!
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r06/th_Turn_01_zps3fa8f6cd.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r06/Turn_01_zps3fa8f6cd.jpg.html)

I've added an eyelet to each to fix them to the wing. gaspatch made also a version with an integral eyelet, but they are rigid, so you must glue them already with the right angle. With my system I have some more freedom.
In the second pic you can see also some eyelets and the "tool" I use to make them.
Is a simple pin ( you can easily make a tool like this if you want or you can buy allready made eyelets from bob's buckles ;D ).
With this tool is very easy to make eyelets, just wrap some wire around the pin and twist it. ;)

Hi Andrew,
Fantastic build so far. Your woodpaint is extraordinary. Very convincing. Your detail is magnificent. Really great craftmanship!
Kind regards

Oh man Andrew, it gets better as you go along! The seatbelts look really
good...not an easy thing with the PE belts. You nailed it. I am quite taken
with the seat. Could you tell me how you did the wear on it? Amazing
talents shown, my friend.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

The seat is done like all other wood parts, I 've posted some details in the first page of this thread... anyway is acrylic sand color base and oil color over it

I've used this technique http://wingnutwings.com/ww/vC8C3C405/www/hintsandtips/32002%201-32%20LVG%20C.VI%20painting%20wood%20grain%20hints%20and%20tips.jpg using various colors and painting a little bit of grain with acylics over the base color.

Hello Andrew:
This is coming along nicely. You asked about the wrapping on the exhaust. I am not sure I like it. I think it looks camouflaged. If you had a reference for it would be more helpful in giving a better answer. But, that is just my opinion. I do like your use of oils for the wood grain and like what you are doing with the engine. Outstanding workmanship. What is that tool you are using to make the eyelets? I also appreciate your explanation and your photo comparison of how you preshade the surface prior to applying the W&W decals to get the desired affect.
Looking forward to more.

Thanks for your comments :)
Tomorrow I'll post some references for the wrapping.
The tool that I use for the eyelet is a simple pin, was allready made that way, I've found in a tool box in my father house, so I don't have any idea where it come from...
But I think that is quite easy to do something similar with steel wire.

Hi!
I've joined the fuselage and painted it with oils to finish the wood effect.
I'm quite satisfied ! :D
The cross on the fuselage is painted, not a decal and the red and black parts still needs some washing and drybrush.

( the mg's are not glued, I've placed them only to see the effect..)
Now I'll leave it alone for a week waiting for the oil to dry.
meanwhile I'll work on other parts (spinner, propeller, wings, ecc...)

P.s.
Here's a picture of the wrapping for Mark
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r07/th_PfalzDXII260018priorto2ndrestorationin200814P1030487_zps976de28d.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r07/PfalzDXII260018priorto2ndrestorationin200814P1030487_zps976de28d.jpg.html)
A little different form mine, but in relal life the difference is not so much, the pictures of the models exagerate the effect. Next time anyway I'll try something different or I'll go for a barracuda resin ;)

The fuselage is stunning, Andrew. Wonderful wood effects and the coloured
areas accent them beautifully. Truly admirable work, my friend! I'm looking
forward to the next updates.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hello Andrew: Thanks for posting the photo, looking at the photo's, I would say you captured the look rather well. It almost looks like thread rather than tape or strips of fabric. Your efforts on the wood are paying off too. Your wood affect is outstanding. Looking forward to more.

Thanks for your comment :)
I think that there were 2 styles of wrapping: one used a tape and another used a thread.
Usually on the models is reproduced the tape one, so I wanted to try something different for my model.

Andrew
The NASM Albatros book describes what they found as "asbestos cord bound with [black colored] tape." This is also what is shown in the 1918 British evaluation report and the AWM D.V. It is what i see in most period photos that show some kind of wrapping. Your museum example may be missing the tape wrapping. I am personally dubious about the ace bandage style as seen on the modern TVAL replicas, I think it is a concession to practicality for a flying replica given what is available nowadays. Of course I could be wrong. :)
Anyway, lovely build Andrew :)

Hello Andrew.

Hi!
While I'm waiting the oil paint to dry I'm working on the smaller bits.
I've weathered the exhaust with oils and pastels (I'll add some rust pigment around the welds...)
and I've painted and chipped the spinner. Maybe it's a bit overdone, but I'll decide when the plane will be finished, it will not be a big work repaint it.

And a question :
on the left wing of Roland there's what a think is a reinforcement for the pilot to step on while climbing on the cockpit.
The base I think is black, but I can' t decide the color of the strips: metal or wood ? Anyone knows something? Thanks :)

Andrew,
From what I've found to date the answer is metal. I did my Pfalz reinforced "steps" with scrap decal painted in the appropriate colour and will apply some wear/scratches to it when I weather the completed model. Worked well if that's of any help.

Lance

Hello!
I've made some progress this week end
I've finished to paint the cowlings
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r08/th_Assembly_01_zps6dcda73f.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r08/Assembly_01_zps6dcda73f.jpg.html)
Clear coated the fuselage and added some decals
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r08/th_Assembly_02_zps281c0d82.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r08/Assembly_02_zps281c0d82.jpg.html) (http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r08/th_Assembly_03_zps89b60eb4.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r08/Assembly_03_zps89b60eb4.jpg.html)
I've started to paint the propeller. First an acrylic base and then I've overlayed oil paint. Needs more work and some clear paint on top.
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r08/th_Propeller_01_zps394bdfd4.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r08/Propeller_01_zps394bdfd4.jpg.html) (http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r08/th_Propeller_02_zpsf65fe488.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r08/Propeller_02_zpsf65fe488.jpg.html)
All the sub assemblies are almost ready
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r08/th_Assembly_04_zps71cf70a2.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r08/Assembly_04_zps71cf70a2.jpg.html)
The cross on the rudder is painted. If you are going to build this kit watch out, because the the decal for the rudder looks a little bit undersized to me...

It is interesting to see that you have the same fitting issues with the engine cowlings like I had. It's a pity, as the rest of the kit is a real surprise fitting-related (or not, as the rest is more or less the "typical" WNW-standard of fit).

Well, now they are just layed down there, not fitted yet, but yes, it looks like they are a little bit too thick.
I think that on the intake side I will not fit the panel. On the exhaust side the panel will need some thinning to make it fit well.
Best,
Andrew

It is progressing really good and no doubt will be a real stunner when finished :)
regarding the engine cowlings - I just left them on the ground in front of the plane :)

Hi!
Not much work the last week.
I've been very busy at work and at home with 3d modelling on pc...
I've clear coated the propeller with tamiya clear yellow and added the decals
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r09/th_prop_01_zps638ef2e4.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r09/prop_01_zps638ef2e4.jpg.html)
Some weathering on the landing gear
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r09/th_landing_01_zpsf2b890a5.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r09/landing_01_zpsf2b890a5.jpg.html)
And I've started to add the turnbuckles for the rigging on the lower wing
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Roland/r09/th_Turn_02_zps8bf469c2.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Roland/r09/Turn_02_zps8bf469c2.jpg.html)

Hi!
I've installed the wings and started the rigging.
As usual Wingnut has done a fantastic job and the wings went on without problem
Also the rigging gave me no problem.
I love the Gaspatch turnbuckles :)
For the rigging I've used an elastic thread

Hello Andrew:
This is coming along beautifully. I am just catching up a bit here and I like the faded W&W Lozenge looks on the wings. Your wood tones are quite realistic and certainly add interest to the model. I also like your use of the GP turnbuckles. Nicely done.
Looking forward to more.

Now I'll post a thread in the finished section with other pictures.
I'm very proud of the result, not perfect but absolutely the best model I've evere build! ;D
The aftermarket parts that I've choose was also great (wood & wire decals, taurus resins and Gaspatch turnbuckles), thanks to those great guys that produce them ;)
Now it's time to choose the next model to build... the Salmson? The DH9? Will see...
Thanks to everybody for the C&C and the nice words!
