Just staring on this little gem. Everything seems to go together well on a dry fit so far although the options for the wings and engine nacelles seems a bit vague. Also can't get my head around the recommendation for aluminium for the main colour other than the top of the wings. I keep thinking of F86 Sabres :)
-
It's a nice kit. I finished a combo pack just before Christmas.

Good to hear that you have started work on your Nieuport Toby, I'm looking forward to seeing some progress photos soon.

My brainwave of pre-rigging hasn't proved to be a success as the rigging keeps getting in the way.
Still nothing ventured as the saying goes.

Toby,
Great work so far my friend. Looking forward to seeing more of this little gem.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Your paintwork looks great Toby. I like the Nieuports very much and will certainly follow your build.
Kind regards
Patrick

Hello Toby. It's coming on very nicely.
I don't think there's anything wrong at all with your brainwave in principle; it's certainly how I proceed once key painting is completed. You're right that the rigging can get in the way, but I resolve this (as I think others do) by using small pieces of masking tape to keep them safely tucked out of the way. If you can imagine the rigging complications on a Brisfit, the upper surface of the top wing, the bottom surface of the lower wing and the top of the rear fuselage were covered with little pieces of tape, but it all worked in the end for me.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Very nice start, Toby! I agree with Nigel. It's not bad idea to rig the hard to reach areas before the top wing goes on. Tape is the answer.
Cheers,
Bud
-
That's a good start, Toby. I stand in awe of 1/72 modellers- I couldn't do 1/72 kits when I was young and though I had good vision.
Cheers.

Nice work so far Toby!
I find that the only areas that need to be pre-rigged (one end of the rigging wire only of course!) are those that will be extremely difficult to reach or attach accurately when it is all together - ie: the fuselage/cabane wires, around the engines on multi-engined aircraft, or where rigging wires coincide with joints in the parts (such as the joints of the lower wings/centre section on an Albatros where it is much easier to add the wires, then join the wings to the centre section). The rest is much better done after the assembly.

Very nice work so far Toby, I'm looking forward to seeing the next update.

Thanks for the kind words so far. I have now used some tape to stop the the offending rigging from flopping about but next time I'll only pre-rig where there is no viable alternative. Updates to follow.
-
Now the fun starts. I think I'll have a large whisky to steady the nerves :o

Great work on the little Nieuport, Toby. Your paintwork is very well done.
I look forward to the next updates, whisky notwithstanding. ;) ;D
Cheers,
Ernie :)

It's coming along very nicely, Toby. No need for whiskey, mate, you've got it nailed.
Cheers.

Top wing on and some rigging sorted but a couple of things have gone wrong namely the supports on the engine cover not lining up correctly and one breaking. Hey ho that's what character building is all about :o
-
The next biplane I build will have a plan that I will follow. This one has been a bit of a hotchpotch of ideas that seemed good at the time but in reality didn't quite come off.
I'm going to finish this as best I can but I fear it won't be pretty. I suspect some weathering will be included to hide some of my errors.
Anyway here's how things stand atm.

Not sure if the whisky helped but you're only young once! ;D
-
A start on the decalling. I gave a quick gloss varnish over to aid the fixing of decals but should I stick with it or should I use a satin or matt varnish for the final coat?
-
In 1/48th I like a Satin finish for fabric areas. It all depends on the state of the aircraft. Some areas around the engine could get glossier with age,(from oil leakage), while fabric loses some of its original gloss on wings and fuselage. I think it is in the end what you find most pleasing to your eye. JMHO,
RAGIII
PS: I know some modelers who go with gloss and some go with flat and I think their models look terrific which is why I feel it is a personal preference.
-
The Nieuport is looking really good, Toby. I'm also of the opinion that the
fabric areas would look about right with a satin finish. I look forward to the finished
product.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Well done Toby. A wonderful plane. Great modeling in 1/72!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Hello Toby:
Looking good. I use flat most of the surfaces. Unless it is definitely a gloss, I will mask it off, but I always use Testors Dullcote. I like this model and you are making good progress.
Best
Mark
-
You've done well, Toby. I also think that a satin finish looks best, but I haven't worked in 1/72 for decades. Why not grab some scrap plastic, paint it with the same colours as used on your model, and then see which you think looks best?
Cheers.
Dal.
-
I second Dal's advice. The finish will change how the colors look in relation to one another, test on an analogue scrap and see what you like.
She's a fine looking little Noop, I also like seeing some Lego at work :D
Well done.
-
Hi Toby.
Nice 1/72 Ni that you're building there.
Cheers
-
Disaster has struck in the form that I have lost the tail fin so I'm unable to finish the Nieuport. >:( I'm sure it will appear in the fullness of time but until that happens I'm going to have to shelve it. Many thanks for the words of encouragement from you all. They were greatly appreciated. So what's next I wonder?
-
Hi Toby,
Sorry to hear that. Sometimes by cleaning up the bench you could by chance find it back. I know that I searched for a whole day for a tiny little part and finally found it. Looking inside the books who are used with the build gives sometimes the solution. So sad your not being able to continue. Give it a try my friend.
Kind regards
Patrick

That's the blighter ;D
-
Toby, I've got a 1/72 Eduard Nieuport Dual Combo sitting here doing nothing. If
you want a spare rudder or whatever, let me know and I'll send it off to you. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Thanks Ernie for the generous offer. Waking up this morning I've decided to try and scratch build one so will be continuing with the build
-
Sorry to hear that you lost the rudder but I'm happy to know that you are going to scratch build one and continue with your excellent build.
Des.

Well having cut out a template and prepared it for priming I picked up a clamp to hold it and guess what?
Yup. ::)

You see Toby? I'm so glad for you!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
They all come home eventually Toby. ;) ;D I'm glad to see the little
rascal came out of hiding. On with your beautiful build, my friend. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
As Ernie said, Toby, they eventually return- though usually only after you have made a replacement. But look on the bright side- you've scratch-built the rudder. All you need scratch up now is a couple of wings, a fuselage and a couple of other bits and pieces, and you've got another model made. ;D
Cheers.
Dal.
-
;D
It does come with a spare top wing and engine nacelle so who knows ;)
-
Glad to see you've decided to soldier on with this little beauty, Toby.
Cheers,
Bud

AGREED 100%!

I started to lose interest in this and it shows.
The final varnish went wrong as did a few other little things that overall made me just want to be shot of it but it hasn't put me off quite the reverse in fact. :D
Still lessons learnt and not taking time over the photos will be addressed next time. There will be a next time as I have over 50 biplanes in my stash.

Very nice job, Toby. The replacement rudder and overall finish look great. Congratulations.

I think it's gorgeous, Toby. Very nice job of the paintwork and I like the
display base as well. Good going!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Great looking Ni Toby. Very fine indeed. Congrats.

Like the others said Toby Nicely done! I think we all are our worst critics when it comes down to the final judgment! Appreciate what you have accomplished and take the lessons to your next build!!

Thanks guys for all the positive comments. I'm having a break from biplanes for a month as I have some WW2 kits to make but I will be back.
