A new Build Log started for the New Year.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2515.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2515.jpg.html)
I'll be building the Wingnut Wings 1:32 Pfalz DIIIa as 8304/17 in late 1918 as seen at a collection depot for surrendered aircraft and about which very little historical information is available. The WNW after-market Decal Sheet 30019 "Pfalz DIIIa Flying Circus part 1 is the source for the markings , option D. This aircraft, from the final Production Batch, served with an unidentified Marine Feld Jasta and was turned over to the Allies Post War per the Armistice Terms. The aircraft was finished in the standard "Silbergrau" aluminum dope with five colour Lozenge fabric on the upper and lower surfaces of both wings, a very colourful bird with the addition of the MFJ standard yellow trim and an unusual fuselage emblem which cleverly incorporates the final late war version of the very thin "Balkenkreuz" national marking.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2508.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2508.jpg.html)
I've also chosen the Mercedes DIIIa 180 HP engine for this version. References are rather limited however I've also reviewed several excellent Build Logs here and picked up some valuable hints.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2516.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2516.jpg.html)
After Market additions include the WNW Decals, some Taurus Engine resin parts (only the components visible with the cowlings "buttoned up") HGW Fabric Seat belts, and Master Model brass Spandaus. Not shown, the excellent Aero Club Instrument bezels which always add a lot to the cockpit. The Lozenge will be my first experience with the Wood and Wire Lozenge products.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2518.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2518.jpg.html)
As a final After Market addition I plan to use a set of Steven Robson's outstanding spoked wire wheels; the only photograph I have of the aircraft shows the wheel covers removed and AMS resulted in a critical requirement for these little gems!
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2479.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2479.jpg.html)
I've started on the engine and cockpit modules and the quality of the Kit and fit appear to be well up to the high standards produced by Wingnut Wings. The choice of this as my next build was an easy one, after a long haul with the Bif and the Sopwith Tripe I really wanted some colour on the bench!
I'll get cracking on her, and hopefully post some progress in the next week or so.
Cheers,
Lance

Hi Lance,
A very good choice. I have this one waiting too. I'm looking forward what great build you wil produce now. I'm sure it wil be fabulous as always and I will follow it from the beginning to the end. Good luck!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Really looking forward to this one, buddy! I like that scheme quite a bit. When I first started back at this hobby, I only wanted to build aircraft that were flown by the aces. Then, when I got into building two seaters, that became a little less important. Now, I'm inspired by interesting schemes and markings. This one falls into that category.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Excellent choice of livery, Lance!
Looks like we got the beginnings of a MFJ build off ;)
I look forward to seeing your progress.
If you need any masks let me know. Sling me the dimensions and Mr Vinyl chopper will do his best to service you :D
Good luck!

Good choice, Lance. :D I'm still struggling along with mine and now, between
Von BobderPfalz and yourself, I will be able to see how it's really supposed
to look. ;) ;D Looking forward to following along.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Hello Lance:
Good choice and interesting set of markings. I will be interested to see how you like the wheels. I like the Pfalz and I have a sheet of Pheon markings for it, which I will use when I do another one. Looking forward to this build and seeing you progress through it.
Best
Mark
-
Thanks All for the encouragement.
Mark & Patrick, I doubt you'll need my efforts to produce top quality Builds when you tackle this one. Both of you do very nicely on your own resources however I'll try the water, least a friend can do!
Ernie, I may be leaning on you a bit as the Build progresses. Reference material is a little scarce...........
Bud, I agree with your approach, I was all "aircraft of the Aces" until recently and some of the more obscure subjects are pretty hard to resist.
von Pfalzwinger, PM on the way shortly, good Buddy!
Cheers All, :)
Lance

Excellent choice Lance! I love this scheme, even though their's no info on the pilot, and have it earmarked for the future. ;D For now, I'll partake of the vicarious enjoyment of watching what I know will be your masterful transformation of these plastic and metal bits into a beautiful model of this most beautiful aeroplane! Onward! ;D
Regards,
Bob
-
Lance,
I am Looking forward to this one. That is a great scheme!

This will be a treat to follow Lance.
My Pfalz is stalled a bit at the minute and I've started a D.VII and Snipe to build quickly (by my standards) in the meantime. By that time you and Bob and probably a few others will have provided plenty of inspiration for me to get back to the Pfalz.
I like to do unusual schemes I haven't seen done before. They have to look nice too though, and I think you've ticked both those boxes with this one. I'm looking forward to see it, especially with those wheels!
-
It is a rather unique scheme for sure; normally I'm a stickler for historical accuracy and this one has a lot of unknowns. I trust WNW's info thus an MFJ Aircraft it is and the yellow tail color is, to me, a given. The engine will be the 180 HP DIIIa version as opposed to the 160 Horse basic DIII based on the fact that she is from the final production batch. Most of the rest is "standard" finish. Bottom line, I really like the colour scheme and markings!
Cheers,
Lance
-
A great choice of subject Lance and I just love the colour scheme you are going to use, this will be a truely stunning looking model once completed. All your aftermarket accessories will certainly add to the model especially the superb Steven Robson spoked wheels. I look forward to seeing the first photos of this build.

Nice scheme choice Lance. It's going to be a beauty.

Finally a little progress, I've been working at the cockpit components and it's slow but enjoyable going. The frame is complete and about 3/4 of the components have been added or are finished and awaiting installation. The fit of the frame is incredible and the dry fit in the closed fuselage is excellent.
Frame "posed" in cockpit with some of the still to be installed components:
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2557.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2557.jpg.html)
Two closer shots of the unfinished cockpit:
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2555.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2555.jpg.html)
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2558.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2558.jpg.html)
The HGW Seat Belt Set is very well done but took a bit of time to finish. I`ve added my own damper springs in lieu of the Kit Photo Etch versions:
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2550.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2550.jpg.html)
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2551.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2551.jpg.html)
....................and it looks like another coat of Mr. Metalcolor on the springs wouldn`t hurt! Love that Macro setting on the camera!
I have the engine started and once the cockpit is completed will be working on the engine and guns for a few days. So far, so good and a very nice Kit.
Cheers,
Lance

Excellent work on the cockpit Lance, the seat cushion looks great, and the seat belts are exceptional, I like you home made springs, well done so far.
Des.

Looking good Lance!

Very nice progress Lance!
Mark
-
Good stuff, Lance. Your cockpit looks great, especially the floor woodgrain which I
think is exceptional. The HGW seatbelts are really the business. Great job on the
dampening springs.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Hello Lance,
As usual your interior is magnificent. The woodwork is amazing. Love your seat and cushion. This is goining to be some build to follow! Great modeling Lance. Admire your work!
Kind regards my friend
Patrick

Hi Lance,
excellent details, very nice wood, seat belts springs etc.
Cheers,

Great stuff, Lance! Keep going!!
VB ;)
-
Looking good so far Lance:
As the others have said, the wood grain on the floor and other details is nicely done and looks convincing. The seat belts are truly outstanding. I like the HGW seat belts, but as you say, take a bit of time. The dampening springs are a nice touch as well. Looking forward to more.

Brilliant work on the cockpit, Lance!
Cheers,
Bud
-
Great work, Lance, that interior is top notch. That's a very interesting scheme that you chose, too.
The nice thing about the harness springs is that once you close up the fuselage, you can only see a tiny bit of the back springs- and only if you look hard. Make a couple of spares, too- occasionally one makes a bid to escape.
Cheers, mate.

Brilliant work on the cockpit, Lance!

I agree with my Amigo plus!

A little more progress as the cockpit and now engine are all but complete. The seat and belts went in nicely, the shoulder harness portion has been left loose as it will be displayed draped down the left side of the fuselage when the model is completed.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2567.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2567.jpg.html)
The harness dampening springs installed; they'll unfortunately be all but invisible once the fuselage is closed.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2582.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2582.jpg.html)
The final additions to the cockpit were the two hand pumps and the "scratched" aux. throttle and mixture advance lever.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2574.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2574.jpg.html)
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2592.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2592.jpg.html)
The engine is only detailed on the top end as most will be invisible with the cowlings in place. The Taurus DIIIa upgrade set valve springs and also their intake manifold nuts were added, lovely detail on these products. The plugs are some RB Motion ones I had as spares, I want to save the Taurus Products for a Build where they'll be visible.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2583.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2583.jpg.html)
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2580.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2580.jpg.html)
With the panels in place and exhaust manifold added very little engine detail is visible. (all "posed" for now)
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2600.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2600.jpg.html)
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2599.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2599.jpg.html)
Last, a half day of shaving and sanding got the frame and assemblies (and harness tie down points!) to the stage where the fuselage halves and bottom wing dry fitted quite nicely. In particular the bottom "box frame" base for the cockpit had to be reduced considerably to allow the lower wing to fit into the fuselage.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2598.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2598.jpg.html)
I'll now be moving my efforts to the wings and empennage applying lozenge, installing eyelets, and pinning the control surfaces. This will be my first exposure to the Wood & Wire Lozenge, and I'm really looking forward to some "playtime" with the stuff!
Cheers,
Lance

Beautiful work, Lance. The engine looks amazing. The Taurus Valve springs and
other goodies add so much to an already great engine. I am really enjoying tagging
along with your superb build.

Hello Lance. I'm with Ernie on this one. You skills and attention to detail are surely an example to us all.
Best wishes
Nigel

Yes Lance trully amazing what you have accomplished with the interior and the engine. Looking forward to the next update.
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Ernie, Nigel, and Patrick, (and all of you that commented last week)
Thanks for the kind words, as always very encouraging. I thought my engine top portion looked pretty good until I looked at Szymon's DVII earlier today; now that's skill and attention to detail! That's what I really enjoy about this Forum; every time you think you've seen it all someone else raises the bar even further! It's all great incentive to keep trying to improve and there's so much available to learn from the skilled Modellers here.
Since posting earlier today I've closed up the fuselage and attached the lower wing. The wings have been given a coat of gloss off-white in preparation for the lozenge decals and there's a minimal amount of filler/putty on the lower fuselage seams. She'll be drying overnight, then it's sanding for a few hours and hopefully a start on the lozenge.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Lance, if I were to compare my work to the work of others on this forum, I'd stop posting. Nothing anyone else has done can detract from the extraordinary work you've done on the cockpit and engine. As far as I'm concerned, this is a masterpiece in the making.
Cheers,
Bud
-
That is an outstanding update! I think I have said I have the Roden DIII to build but your DIIIa build is making me realize I NEED a DIIIa :P
RAGIII
-
I totally agree with what Bud and Rick said Lance (apart from the fact that their work can meet that of anyone). Sometimes what i see on the forum makes me think "what am I doing here? wouldn't I not better go cooking or playing pool or something?" And that is also true when I look at your very skilled work Lance. So when I look at your interior and engine, I think you are amidst the top modelers on the forum. Keep it up my friend.
Kind regards
Patrick

A great update Lance, the cockpit is excellent and your engine is superb, this is going to be a real gem.

Thanks all for the comments, much appreciated!
Lindsay, I'm waiting for the paint to dry (but not watching it!) on the second coat of gloss enamel on the wings before taking the next series of photos. I think I'll wait until I get some Lozenge done so it'll be a few days.
Cheers, ;)
Lance

The Pfalz is coming along wonderfully, Lance. I'm happy I'm not the only one that had a bit of
a fit problem with the lower wing. I look forward to seeing your post-lozenge update. I can't say
enough about your engine. superb stuff!
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Nice update Lance, she's coming together very nicely. Looking forward to the W&W loz update.
-
Great progress, Lance. The interior is very finely done. WNW, HGW and Taurus do cater for a great model, do not they?
-
Thanks for the positive comments Gents. I am quite looking forward to the W&W Lozenge exercise, now delayed a bit as I had to spray a second coat of gloss enamel on the wings to get a solid glossy base. You are so correct about the Taurus and HGW bits, Prze, we've come a long way since the advent of After Market Decals so long ago! There's still a lot of room for scratch built features though, which make an equally significant difference IMHO.
Cheers,
Lance

Lovely work, Lance! Keep going!!! ;)

Lance,
Outstanding progress my old friend. Beautifully detailed interior. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to more.

Okay, I'm really late to this party and have I ever been missing some superb modelling here. The extras you're adding along the way Lance are making this Pfalz just pop. I was particularly drawn to the belts and I can well imagine how tricky it must have been to construct them. The interior and engine just look tremendous too. I'm looking forward to seeing the lozenge go on next.
Cheers,
Chris

Just beautiful work Lance
This is a most interesting scheme on the Pfalz and also one of my favourites. I’m looking forward to your application of the W&W lozenge. I see you’re catching up with Oberleutnant Bob Von Snail on the Pfalz build.
Happy Landings

Thanks for the encouragement, All. It's steady but very slow on the progress scale presently, have had a couple of minor setbacks that incur and extra day or so each as they rear their ugly little heads. I have the Lozenge completed on the top and bottom of the upper wing however don't have the Lozenge Rib Tapes (that I never thought of until now!) required. I've found that the Wood & Wire Lozenge decals are very brittle and it's really difficult to cut them without "chipping" of the colours. (I am using the white base product) If my attempts to cut my own tapes aren't successful I'll have to put this on hold until I get some of the real product.) In a moment of inspired genius I thought of the Kit supplied decals/tapes however they don't at all match the colours/finish and are not useable in this case. As a matter of information there's been a "flurry" of PM's between Ernie and I comparing notes and discussing solutions to the rib tape question. He has the clear base Lozenge and found that cutting rib tapes worked very well.
I'll be trying the "home cut" solution today, I have a fresh bottle of Microscale Liquid Decal Film on hand which may help. I also missed an un-filled seam on the fuselage before spraying the Silbergrau colour coat which had me filling, sanding, and sealing then re-spraying the area over again, a 2 day event with curing time factored in.. Ah well, it's not a race!
I'll hopefully get some photos up in the next 2-3 days.
Cheers,
Lance
-
G'day, Lance.
Sorry to read you're having some minor problems. Was that bottom seam that appeared the fairing where the fuselage flares into the wing? I had troubles making that disappear as well.
But you'll sort it all out, mate. I'm looking forward to seeing it with a bit of colour on it.
Cheers.
Dal.

With the bottom fairing, I had the best luck with plain old CA gap filler.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Dal,
The seam I had to redo was actually at the rear top where the fuselage fairs into the vertical stab portion, just a careless oversight on my part. The repair worked nicely and all is well. I've been more or less successful at solving the rib tape problem, the Microscale decal film eliminated most of the chipping in the cutting process and I've completed the upper wing, now labouring away at the lower one. It's a slow go as the chipping of the lozenge bolts I'm applying causes a lot of patching here and there. Slow and steady is the key, I hope to get that update with photos posted soon. :P
Cheers,
Lance

Im watching this one with interest. Your decal situation will influence which lozenge of several choices I will pick up, although Aviattic still tops the list.
Steve
-
Time to update this Build before the model is completed; there should have been one more since the last but I'll catch up on the progress here.
Once the fuselage seam was repaired as mentioned earlier it was given one brushed coat of future to seal the finish and prepare it for decals. With that dried overnight the lozenge was started on the lower wings, the top already being underway.
Here's the lower wing completed, one brush coat of Future and ready for the tapes. Note the chipping close to the wing root, in this case of no concern as the strengthened walk panels will cover them nicely.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2624.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2624.jpg.html)

The lozenge chipping led to a lot of patching which was less then ideal as the white decal base showed regardless of how sharp a blade was used or how many attempts were made. In retrospect applying decal film as was done prior to cutting rib tapes would have vastly improved the results. If you look closely you'll be able to pick out the patches...............

At this point the fuselage round access panels were masked off for painting; the step Kick Plates and wing access doors having been completed already, the former with overpainted decals, the latter by hand brush. The panels had been carefully measured several weeks back and the masks were special ordered from our great entrepreneur, Bob von Buckle, alias von Mask Maker and produced on his Vinyl Cutting Machine. OUTSTANDING PRODUCT!!! They were so good I was able to use them twice from one side to the other and have more to spare then I used. Also, significantly, no lifting of the future top coat. I elected to hand paint the panels and fittings, hopefully the brush marks will be more subdued by the semi gloss finish coats when applied.
Masks in place with paint applied.........................The wing step areas were done with scrap decal overpainted with the grey/green interior and protective colour with a layer of decal film on top and the yellow nose area masked and airbrushed. Model Master Insignia Yellow Enamel provided a good match to the Profile and three light coats provided solid coverage and colour.

Next will be the fuselage decals, a sealer coat of semi gloss, some post shading on the wings, and installation of the turn buckles in preparation for further assembly. I also hope to get the fuselage weathered before adding the upper wing and rigging etc.
So now, back to the work bench. Thanks for looking :)
Cheers,
Lance

It all looks great IMHO! The lozenge is patched but I think the real thing was patched up after a fight too ;) so it is basically the realism in its purest form!
Keep up the good work Lance!

Looking fabulous! The Lozenge looks great along with the tail painting etc.

Lance,
Great update! I'm so happy the masks worked well for you.
I'm looking forward to seeing her complete. It may just give me the kick up the butt I need to finish mine :D
Keep going!!

Hello Lance:
This is coming along nicely. I have used W&W lozenge before and experienced the same chipping. When I use it again, I will definitely give it a decal coat. Your patches are imperceptible and your walk areas nicely covered the chipping there. The masks are the bees knees. I will have to send him a PM about those!! ;) I am interested to see how you will weather the fuselage. I am doing one now; albeit you are way ahead of me, in Rudolph Berthold's markings. So I will be watching to see how you weather the model.
Looking good as per usual Lance.

Thanks, All, for the positive feed back, means a great deal to me. von Buuckle, Thank you so much for the excellent response on the mask request, these should become part of your product line as they are outstanding. Mark, the decal coat I used was Microscale "Liquid Decal Film" worked very well.
I'm in the throes of completing all the decaling, should have more photos here in the next 24-48 hours.
Cheers,
Lance

That’s a lovely couple of shots of the lower wing fixing to the fuselage. Don’t you just love those wing fillets on the Pfalz D.IIIa. I did try and count the number of compound curves but got a bit mind boggled.
Very nice lozenge as well. I agree, a patch or two is entirely appropriate. A mate of mine also uses those little Tommy roundels that come with the WnW decal sheet. Ah, now I know what they’re good for.
What ever brand that lozenge is, it looks great and I’ll have to go back to the start of your log an see which one you’re using.
Thanks for sharing your log, an excellent job Lance.
Cheers

Hello Lance,
You have done a great job on the lozenge and access panels. This build is as usual very neat and wonderfully mastered. This is modeling with a "M".
Kind regards
Patrick

Looks great Lance, nice save with the patches!
-
Wow! Lance, your Pfalz is looking amazing! The lozenge really can't get much
better, patches and all. I'm sure the prototype had it's share as well. The bit
about the access plate masking is brilliant. Herr Von Buckle has outdone himself
with that one! All in all, my friend, you are making a superb model...but what else is
new? ;) :D I'm looking forward to the next updates. By the way, the rib tapes are
beautiful (not to self, look at all available products before ordering!). :-[ ;) ;D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Lance, for what it's worth, I really had to look closely to find the patches so you did an outstanding job with them. Consider also that I'm looking at closeup photography here, so at regular viewing distance, they'll be invisible. In my humble opinion, patches add realism to the model. Well done!
Cheers,
Chris

Lovely work Lance, great looking Pfalz, lets face it, what WWI kite after a few weeks at the front didn't have a few patches.
Cheers
Pete.

Thanks All, yet again, for the encouraging comments!
I've got the decaling completed and the WNW After Market Sheet was up to the WNW normal high standard. The big fuselage one went on beautifully despite my worries that it would prove to be a "bear".

Today I'll try the Alclad II Klear Kote Semi Matte sealer coat on some paint and decal test pieces I made up as I went along, I'll post the results soon per our earlier discussions about the product. If it doesn't set up or I don't like the results I'll go with the standard Model Master Acryl product. In the interim I'm putting a little effort into the control horns and landing gear assemblies. So far no big disappointments with this phase.

Lance

It's a rough cut chunk of foam that's probably done a dozen or more models over the years. I'll need to replace it real soon as it's absorbed a lot of paint.

I'm running out of words to Thank all of you who add such complimentary and kind comments here; a simple "Thanks" to all of you!
I'm very pleased to report that the Alclad II Klear Kote Semi Matte worked very well on the test pieces: nicely dry within an hour, no damage to the Future, enamel paint, nor decals and a nice finish. I did two light coats about 2 hours apart (Instructions say second coat may be applied after 10 minutes) and it's hard as a rock and completely dry 4 hours later......looks like a good choice.
Cheers,
Lance

I'm thinking there had to be a bad batch of the Alclad II Klear kote once upon a time ; I get the exact same results as you Lance, I like the stuff, it sprays super thin and goes on nice and even...

Do you spray in light coats or do you go on wet
"Just wet" so that you can see it is shiny when it hits, but dries essentially instantly after that. Otherwise yes, light coats - definitely avoid pooling. It is lacquer based after all ;). But it is pretty easy stuff to handle all in all. You'll see ;) Oh yeah : shake it a good long time before using it .

One last question on spraying the clear coat - do you thin it or spray it "neat?"
Steve
-
I just posted some comments on the original "Klear Kote" Thread after re-checking the results this morning: hard as a rock, excellent finish with just two light coats as Bo describes here two hours apart. I sprayed at 17-18 psi and used it "neat" direct from the bottle. It does need a good shake prior as the matting powder was a glutenous clump in mine. I had alluded to the same thought; a quality control problem. THIS bottle is just fine and I like the results, subsequent bottles will be re-tested just in case........................
Cheers,
Lance

Steve
Yepper, like all Alclad products you use it as is, straight from the bottle.
Sorry Lance, back to your marvelous build ;)
-
Just to complete the saga of the Klear Kote, I got 2 light coats sprayed on the major components of the Pfalz yesterday, great results. completely dry (I was handling parts 20 minutes after spraying) lovely consistent finish, and I'm sold on this stuff. Sprayed straight from the bottle, 16 psi, and only enough per coat to give a "wet" look. And now to start wrestling with the pigments and pastels and get at the hand carved prop. :)
Cheers,
Lance
-
Out of sequence but here's an "amusing little interlude" I experienced yesterday prior to spraying that coat or two of Klear Kote...................
I discovered that my close companion, "Wonder Dog" had managed to get one of his hairs not only in the upper wing finishing sequence but under a fully cured and over-coated decal. First shot shows half the removal process done and follows the (Decal) repair through to present situation. A tiny drop of black paint should cover the very small chipped area still above the gaping slash that we eliminated.
The errant dog hair half removed.........looking like a bad situation.

and the final completed repair. A minor but interesting less the ideal development!

Looks like the Klear Kote worked a treat, Lance. I really like the sheen. Too bad about

Hello Lance,
The wing still looks terrific despite the hair! Maybe a good idea to make a heat box, this is the first thing I did before starting modeling (a very fine explanation by Des on the main site). I have a dog and two cats and till now didn't find hairs in my drying paints. Be sure this model will be a beauty Lance. Wonderful build all the way!

What a recovery Lance! Well done.
We used to have a wonderful dog, as well as two cats. It was our feline friends that proved the most problematic. I once made and painted a very nice 15mm flag for an English Civil war command group. So proud was I that I left it on the table overnight, only to find it bitten off and chewed up the following morning!
Best wishes
Nigel

Yes Lance, great recovery. I admire the way all you people deal with problems and the inventiveness of the recoveries! Congratulations.
Nigel, this must have been a royalist or parlementarian cat

It did turn out quite well........I must admit there was no small amount of trepidation hanging over the work desk when I grabbed the Hobby knife and started scraping through the layers to reach the DNA sample Wonder Mutt had provided. All in all no real harm done but I must admit I'd rather have found that hair in my morning coffee; Oh Damn, that was a different hair, such a joy these little critters!
I've been post shading, carving a prop, and installing turnbuckles for the past several days, photos soon.

I've been plodding along steadily on this Build since breaking out of the "Lozenge Doldrums" a week or so back. The Lozenge is as good as it's going to get and patching is at an end!
A lot of the sub components were completed and have been installed. The engine side panels, guns, a hand carved laminated prop, spinner, folded down windscreen, and landing gear (dry fitted only at this stage) are complete and on the airframe. The upper wing is completed and ready to go on the aircraft and all upper buckles (von Buckles variety) and lower buckles (GasPatch) are done. The upper wing is pre-rigged with .013 and 0.15mm Mono.
I snapped some quick work bench photos this morning, thought I'd get an update done before venturing out into the deepfreeze to spend the better part of the day clearing snow again. Worse, my neighbor is away so it's my turn to do a good deed and clear his driveway as well......sigh!
Here's the top and bottom of the upper wing with the Radiator assembly...........
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2684.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2684.jpg.html)

The control handle for the Rad Shutter is posed and still needs a coat of grey-green.
Here's a few shots of the landing gear with Steven Robson's wonderful spoked wheels mounted. The tires are the supplied O-rings painted dull grey and I'm going to finish the Kit wheels as well in the event that I don't find the end product worthy of these little jewels! Has anyone tried spraying these with a flat or satin finish??
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2670.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2670.jpg.html)

I've installed Gas Patch Turnbuckles on the landing gear as well.
I added the panel retaining springs to the engine side panels, made from very fine copper wire, I'll be repainting them as I managed to wear the stainless colour off installing them. I also added the spinner mounting bolt holes; some photos showed 6, others 8 total. I used the smaller number.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2668.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2668.jpg.html)
The forward fuselage has been weathered with all the "mechanical" ingredients of oil and fuel stains and grease marks; I still want to add a bit of mud and dust to complete that process and get a tiny bit on the aft portions. Here's a number of shots showing the weathering and the additions of panels, guns etc.

and last a shot of the hand made prop, (Axial) In retrospect I wish I'd chosen a tighter grained light colour veneer to get more contrast however this one will fit the bill; it does show the laminations quite well under most light conditions. It's a six layer veneer lamination and I got lucky, usually takes two or three attempts however this one worked as the only one required right from the beginning!
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2682.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/SE%205a%20and%20Beyond/IMG_2682.jpg.html)
Next step will be a little pastel/pigment addition, then off with the landing gear and into the assembly jig for the upper wing mounting. The struts are completed and dry fitting appears excellent, hopefully it'll prove to be a "non-event"!
Cheers,
Lance

This is one sweet Pfalz, Lance! ;D The finish and details look just great, and I am in awe of your hand-carved laminated prop. Even without the darker laminates, it really looks most excellent. I love it! That's quite a skill you've mastered. What kind of wood do you use, and where do you get it?
I'm really looking forward to seeing this one finished. I really like the MFJ Pfalz schemes. :D

Thanks for the kind words, Patrick. I'm dragging my feet on the snow task, reasoning that it'll be a lot warmer this afternoon and I think our Women's Hockey Team is playing Switzerland shortly.....might have to tune into that for an hour or more!

Bob,
I bought a large variety package of thin veneers at Lee Valley Tools, the sheets are approx. 9X12 inches and most are 1/32 to 1/16 thickness. I use Carpenters White Glue and press the "blanks' overnight in a vice. I also have some Flying Model Aircraft Plywood that works quite well; made by a company called Midwest in the US. Look for the Birch type and make sure it`s 5 layers or laminations thick. I sometimes add another layer to it. It`s 3mm (one -eighth inch thick) which is sometimes a litte thin for the profile of the prop.
If you`re interested take a look at my Tutorial in Hints and Techniques.
And Thanks very much for the compliments; I`m so hung up on the Lozenge shortfalls that I don`t see this Build as being a good one, however the post shading seems to hide a lot of the damage.
Cheers,
Lance

Lance,

The prop looks amazing + we all know how sweet those wheels shape up ;)
Great stuff!

Bob, Stefanbuss, and Red Baron,
Thanks for your positive comments. Justin, you are no doubt correct. We do become our own worst critics and, as is said often here, we tend to dwell on what WE know is there, it may not jump out at others. On the brighter side my snow is done; I'll clean up the neighbor's tomorrow and hopefully have enough time to get that upper wing mounted. More to follow soon. ;)
Cheers,

Absolutely superb, Lance. Your attention to detail is amazing, as usual. The wire
wheels look wonderful! What kind of paint did you use on the tires? Really inspiring
work, my friend!

Rick, Mark, Ernie,
Thanks for the comments. Ernie, I sprayed the tires (Supplied black rubber "O" Rings) with Model Master Enamel, RLM 63 "Lichtgrau" semi gloss. The bottle was labelled December 2001 and was as good as new! I have a lot of paint like that from the days when time was at a premium and every return to the Hobby got overcome by events!
And believe me, you Guys are correct about the spoked wheels, they are far more impressive when they are in your hands!
Cheers,
Lance

Progress has been slowed by an attack of the Bubonic Plague, my wife of course insists it's a strain of influenza that many folks hereabouts have fallen victim to. Based on the way I've felt these past 4-5 days I'm sticking to my whimpering and whining assessment of it as a reincarnation of the flipping "Black Death"!
The mounting of the top wing was a fairly simple exercise as the Kit engineering is fool proof in this regard. I used my normal scratched cabane alignment jig to ensure spacing and level installation using the Biplane Assembly Jig as basically a stand only. When the cabanes were cemented in place the inter plane struts were cemented into the lower wing points, the top spacing measured roughly from the cabane assembly C/L to provide the last critical placement. The upper wing was then popped onto the struts and the Radiator return line and extra thin CA flowed into the mounting holes. All went very smoothly and the alignment appears flawless.
Some shots of the Cabane process........

..............and here's the upper in place and some of the rigging done. I'm trying to do the wing rigging a few components at a time, then painting it before the next set to reduce conflict and maximise access for the painting of the lines. I should really be waiting for my spool of the world's greatest rigging line from Steven Robson!

.......and last a shot showing the ongoing chipping of the lozenge incurred during handling for assembly and rigging; all which will require repair and/or touch up at the end. I predict I may be down to bare plastic by the time she's done! :'( The Anemometer is the Kit one, an absolute monster to get off the Sprues and assemble. The little cupped spinner component, the third utilised as the carpet beast gobbled two of them, or parts there of, is the challenge and I had to rob several from my DV / DVa Stash Kits)

Today I hope to keep chipping away (pun intended!) at the rigging, other then a month of Lozenge repair I'm almost there! >:(

Lance,
You're doing great work on your P3a - She looks swell! :)
Sorry to hear you haven't been feeling to good :-[ Hope you spring back to full springiness real soon ;)
Take care,

Beautiful work Lance! Your wing mounting system is impressive. The lozenge and Silver as I have said, are a great combination.
The rigging looks great!!

She's looking very spiffy indeed, Rick! ;D Just outstanding work. Chipping on the wings? Just looks like dirt and stains to me. ;) Keep up the very fine work!
Cheers,
Bob

Thanks "Two-Bobs" and Rick. It's the old "I see it thus everyone else will for certain" thing rearing it's ugly head again! The white contrast of the chips is the center of my concerns however a little more patching and a quick and careful sealer coat should cure it. As for my cure, von B, if medication and rest don't perform any better soon I'll just increase my use of Dr. Macallan.......it's all not bad! ;)
Cheers,
Lance

What an amazing inspiration lance,
I absolutely love it, so mine is out of the box ready to go. Can't decide between Heldmans or an MFJ build. What yellow is that?

Dave,
Thanks, it's been a very enjoyable Build with the exception of the Lozenge problems. It's a really well designed Kit, the engineering is superb and I know you'll enjoy it. The yellow is Model Master Enamel #33538 Insignia Yellow straight out of the jar. Heldmans' 4117/17 is a very colourful looking choice but many of the MFJ Schemes are very appealing too.
Have fun with your Build; I'll be following your progress.

Hi Lance,
That's a very well done progress. Still like your cabane struts jig and I will use it every time. You make the fixing of the upper wing seem easy, though it isn't really imho. And as Bob R. said, the chipping on the lozenge may well be weathering. I will wait quite a long time before applying lozenge, looks terribly difficult to me and out of reach for my limited skills. The rigging seems top up to now and I am looking forward what you will think of the rigging lines of Steven. Great work Lance!!
Kind regards
Patrick

Lance,
I missed news on your cabane struts jig
somehow. Could you please explain how you made that?

Stefan
Stefan,
Although I called it a jig it's really only a template. I carefully transfer the locations of the upper wing holes where the cabanes fit to a small piece of sheet styrene and dry fit the cabanes to the fuselage and then to that template. Once I'm happy with the fit and ensure the template is perfectly level (and set the angle of forward "sweep' if that's a factor) the cabanes receive a drop of thin CA in their fuselage joints. More CA can be added after the template is removed. On many types the upper wing can be added to the cabanes, then the interplane struts carefully inserted by bending the upper wing a tiny bit. In this case it was just as easy to add the interplane struts and verify their spacing from the Center Line. I use this technique on every build.
Hope this answers your question.
Cheers,
Lance

I finished her today, took a couple of quick Pictures on the work surface, and will try for some decent photos for Finished Models tomorrow.
Since the last update the rigging was completed, all Lozenge edge tapes added and sealed, several smaller bits such as the radiator return hose, Radiator shutter control handle, and flight control surfaces which were rigged as well. The landing gear was installed, bracing wires added, and finally a last hour of touch ups and final weathering was completed.

What a lovely Pfalz, Lance. I like every aspect of it, from the scheme, through the details, rigging, spoked wheels to the weathering. Top class!

Oooooh Aaaaahhh Lance :-*
Just beautiful, you finished her! You've done a magnificent job with the build and the log. :)
Great to see the nasty little black tyres painted grey.
Best Regards
Steven

Prze, Bo, RB and Martin,
Thank You all for the complimentary comments; coming from Modellers whose work I truly respect they mean a great deal.
Steven, as above and a special Thanks for bringing us those lovely little wheels. Now that the World's Best Rigging Line has run it's course what mad magic is next off the Robson bench!?
Cheers,
Lance

Hey Lance
First thing is to get photos of your lovely Pfalz into SwS Gallery Page and on my Facebook. Eindeckers have to be delivered and then..
it's a Fokker D.III wheel. :)
-
Just sublime. Very well executed. Trouble is I cant decide now between Heldmanns or an MFJ on mine!
-
O my Lance, what a beautiful bird. You made a stunning model. Your spoked wheels are exquisite. Everything is of high standard. Painting, lozenge, rigging, weathering... A build to be proud of. Many congratulations my friend!!!!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Lance, she's absolutely gorgeous! You have really out-done yourself, my friend.
Your detailing and weathering looks amazingly well done, besides a really sharp
paint scheme. The yellow covered beautifully and what can you say about Steven's
wheels...don't they look like they belong there! Well done, Lance!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hello Lance:
Another truly outstanding build. I know what you mean about the lozenge chipping. I have used it as well with the same results. The wheels really make it stand out. I like the weathering, not overdone, but it looks as if it has seen service.
Best
Mark
