I have been working on this figure for a couple of days now. The Pictures show my current progress. I am using Oils as always. The base coat is an Acrylic Beige. I have used Gold Ochre as My Primary color for the coveralls. I have added shadows using Raw Umber. Next up is Highlights of Titanium White.

Good start, Rick. I know nothing or less about figure painting, so I will
tag along with you and hopefully something will sink in here. ;) ;D
Looking forward to more info...when the oils dry. ;D
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thanks Ernie, it is always great to have you along! A little more detail on the Method:
I prime with a white primer, sprayed on. I then get an acrylic color that is close to what I want the overall color to be and brush that on the figure. This gives me a "Feel" for the figure and details. In this case I chose to use Gold Ochre for my Oil color as it gives a very rich beigeish color. I paint on the oils then use a large soft brush and remove a lot of the paint, leaving a glaze so to speak. The next step for me is the shadows, in this case raw umber. Next up will be as stated highlights using titanium white. I hope this helps as an explanation ?

Thanks Rick for your description on painting the figure, any information along this path will be extremely helpful as there are a lot of members who would love to try their hand at figure painting, me included. I will be following this painting sequence very closely and taking notes :)

Very good explanation Rick. Thanks a lot. That really helps.
A little more involved than I had envisioned, but good to know.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Ernie,
Glad to help. By the way the process sounds more involved than it really is! Really not much different from preparing a fuselage or interior frame for oils to make wood grain ::) For newbies to painting figures with Oils I still HIGHLY RECOMMEND Shep Paynes book on Dioramas, both versions.

Hi Rick, you are a real master in this kind of work (not only in this kind of work, in about every aspect of modeling!) and it surely will help everyone who has the courage to tackle these figures.
Kind regards my friend

I have added the shadows and highlights to the uniform. I use a 000 series 7 brush to lay a very fine line in the creases for shadow, and a little more for areas like under the arms. This is then blended with a 00 blending flat brush. I repeated the process for the highlights then went back with my very soft brush and blended it all together. Next I will go back and fix a few issues like the area just under the collar and above the arms. I got this a bit darker than wanted. I will give a few deep shadows attention and the same for high highlights.
