Title: 1/32 Salmson 2-A2 USAS
Post by: guitarlute101 on December 28, 2013, 04:18:03 AM
Hi all,

It's been a while since I've posted due to work responsibilities. I wanted to jump in again with the new, fantastic Wingnut Wings Salmson.

(http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff140/guitarlute101/Salmson%202%20A2/IMG_5302_zps604aeec1.jpg) (http://s239.photobucket.com/user/guitarlute101/media/Salmson%202%20A2/IMG_5302_zps604aeec1.jpg.html)

I want to super detail this build so I'll start with the engine. The Salmson engine has clothes pin springs that are moulded as a solid part on the kit engine...........

(http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff140/guitarlute101/Salmson%202%20A2/SalmsonZ-9_2sss_zps7f93d35a.jpg) (http://s239.photobucket.com/user/guitarlute101/media/Salmson%202%20A2/SalmsonZ-9_2sss_zps7f93d35a.jpg.html)

(http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff140/guitarlute101/Salmson%202%20A2/IMG_5309_zpsa74c3080.jpg) (http://s239.photobucket.com/user/guitarlute101/media/Salmson%202%20A2/IMG_5309_zpsa74c3080.jpg.html)

So I made a jig out of plastic and metal rod and made a spring to see how it would turn out..............

(http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff140/guitarlute101/Salmson%202%20A2/IMG_5315_zpsd32c7695.jpg) (http://s239.photobucket.com/user/guitarlute101/media/Salmson%202%20A2/IMG_5315_zpsd32c7695.jpg.html)

Here's the result, I'm happy with it.............

(http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff140/guitarlute101/Salmson%202%20A2/IMG_5317_zps352b47e9.jpg) (http://s239.photobucket.com/user/guitarlute101/media/Salmson%202%20A2/IMG_5317_zps352b47e9.jpg.html)

Here is where it will go after I modify the kit part.......

(http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff140/guitarlute101/Salmson%202%20A2/IMG_5320_zps6c49723e.jpg) (http://s239.photobucket.com/user/guitarlute101/media/Salmson%202%20A2/IMG_5320_zps6c49723e.jpg.html)]

(http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff140/guitarlute101/Salmson%202%20A2/IMG_5318_zps921a54f2.jpg) (http://s239.photobucket.com/user/guitarlute101/media/Salmson%202%20A2/IMG_5318_zps921a54f2.jpg.html)

thanks for checking in,

Mark

Thanks Keith. I've been pretty busy this last year but I'm not complaining. I'm very thankful for the work but I have missed having some quality build time. I'm hoping to get this thing to look as good as your Hannover, how's it coming along?

Great to see you tackle this kit Mark, and your start is very impressive. I made the same torsion springs for my Voisin build, they really look good on the engine and I'm sure your springs are going to look great. I like the jig you have made, this will make life a lot easier for you and have all the springs exactly the same.

Thanks guys!

The jig I made is helping a lot, I have 18 of these things to make (and a few extra to feed the carpet monster) and I'm almost done. Then I'll have to remove the molded on springs from the kit part. I'm not sure when I'll put the springs on at this point as they can't be handled very much, so probably after some painting and assembly. I'll have to do some more thinking on that.

Hmmm, I'll be following this one.  8)

Still waiting for my little Salmson Otsu-1 in the post.

Very nice springs Mark and yes, some for the Carpet Monster always a wise policy.  I'm not well versed in the "other" aircraft so this one will be good learning for me.

Err, um, Tally Ho? (no that's British you fool, what's the American equivalent?)

(mental note: Steven don't even think about giving Mark a Banzai!)

Many thanks for the comments everyone. You've really made me feel welcomed here.

The Guitarlute "Salmson Engine Factory" has been hard at work and I've enjoyed every minute. The engine goes together like a dream and is a little model in itself. I've done a lot of the detail painting and I've added ignition wires to the back of the engine (I'll do the front tomorrow). So here is how it stands right now..................

I'll add the springs once I'm ready to mount the engine to the fuselage.

Thanks for checking in!!

Outstanding work on the engine Mark!  The Springs really add that dimension of realism and will really be an eye catcher when exposed in the nacelle.  Looking forward to seeing you work through this build.  It is high on my todo list.

Coming late to this build, please let me ask a (possibly dumb) question:

Yopu have painted the cylinders in a copper tone, but on photo you provided of the original (the one you used to show the clamps), the cylinders are black? I am confused - is the original a late model or a replica or whatever (I must confess that i really have very limited knowledge on allied types)?

Hi Rick,

The panel is removable and there are some indentations on the back of the wireless part, so I wouldn't be surprised if the wireless stuff would be included in the "upgraded" version.

Hi Stefan,

I found that pic on a Google search.

I think many of the very early Salmson engines I've seen were not painted, like on the Voisin.

Some of the period pictures of the Salmson engines for the 2-A2 look to be painted in some way to me but I like the color variation of the copper and steel so I went with the kit instructions.

Holy Cow, Mark!

That's really something.  You have set the bar.  My wife got me that one for Christmas and it is my next new build to be started pretty darn soon!

Keep it up...Dan

P.S.  and off topic...I am trying to build my own nylon string acoustic guitar.  Have you even done so?  I just started trying to learn guitar and thought it would be fun to attempt making my own.

Thanks Zabu and Dan,

I've never built a guitar on my own but I do know several builders, both electric and acoustic. I find it all very interesting but, for me, there seems to be a lot of investment in jigs, measurement tools, glues, etc. so I never really got into it. Let me know if you decide to try it.

Hi Dal,

I will definitely be leaving it (and more of the engine cowlings) open. There is quite a bit of modification to do it but it's fun to come up with the solutions to get it done.

Hi everyone,

A small update.

The self-sealing fuel tank that was positioned behind the pilot seat was fabric wrapped. The kit part only has fabric texture on the front and back so I used some modelling mesh and super glued it around the middle...............

then primed it in grey..............

I wanted to do this because you will be able to see a little of the side of the fuel tank through the open wireless access panel.

I also managed to make a partial fuselage former and paint and detail the wireless boxes..................................

Hi everyone,

Here's an update of my Salmson build (that I was able to resurrect thanks to the inspiration of Chris and Prez's build logs). The majority of the interior painting and detailing is finished.

Good to see that you're back at your Salmson Mark and as the others have said, it's a sharp looking interior you have there. Nice, clean work! I'm looking forward to seeing more. The Salmson is getting some well deserved exposure now.

Cheers,

Chris

Mark, it is great to see you revive this build log. It was a true inspiration for me to start mine, now it seems the roles are exchanged  ;) I am sure you will bring yours to the full glory soon! Fine work on the interior so far, go on and button it up!
