Hi all,
I started my Roden kit of the Nieuport 28c.
I did the cockpit and engine to the best of my abilities (whih are not very sprectacular yet). Great difference with the WnW kits. Some problems with precision and very fragile. But I expected worse. Thank you for passing by.

Patrick,
Your interior is looking terrific! I am looking forward to your progress on this one!

Thank you Rick coming from you who did such a beautifull Nieuport it means a lot to me!

I forgot to mention that I asked Ron for his magnificent seat. I hope he will send it to me in january. I first wanted the scheme of the Eddy Rickenbacker's plane, but I saw that there are decals of the Quincy Roosevelt plane. Are they any better than the Roden decals? Thank you.
Kind regards

Hello Patrick:
I am attaching a photo of my Roden Nie 28. One of my earlier efforts with the Aeroscale Sheet for Quentin Roosevelts a/c. Yes, they are better than the Roden Decals. They include the Nieport logos for the struts, stenciling for the wings, just a much better sheet. The cowling stripes are bit tricky, so beware.
(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Marks%20WWI%20Subjects/NIE-28.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Marks%20WWI%20Subjects/NIE-28.jpg.html)
As you can see the cowling opening is very small not allowing for much viewing of engine details, same with the cockpit. Your work is excellent to date, this isn't a bad kit, the problem is, after doing a WNW kit, all others pale in comparison.
Good luck. Looking forward to seeing you progress through the build.
Best wishes and Merry Christmas
Mark
-
Thank you so much Mark. Indeed that cowling painting looks very difficult for a novice. Your Nieuport looks wonderful. Have a very merry Christmas Mark.
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Hi Patrick! Your engine and cockpit look really good to me. Excellent work. ;D
There are actually a few 1/32 Superscale sheets for Ni.28s, which you can easily find on eBay, if not elsewhere. In addition to Quentin Roosevelts aircraft, I believe there are also markings for O'Neill's machine and Edward Elliot's machine, all USAS aircraft.
I look forward to further progress. This one is a bit down on my current build list. Keep up the fine work!
Holiday Cheers,
Bob
-
Hello Bob, thank you so much for your appreciation and your advice on the decals. It's a pitty that this so beautiful Nieuport had a few (major) problems and caused quite a lot of pilots to crash, when coming out of a quick dive when the fabric came loose. This didn't stop the American pilots to come out as winners from a lot of air battles.
Have a very nice and cheerful Christmas!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
What a great start you have made, Patrick! The engine looks really good,
nice work on the sparkplugs and leads, by the way. The cockpit is coming
along very well. Super job on the bracing and control wires and the instruments
look first rate. All in all you are well on the way, my friend. Good work!
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Thank you Ernie, nice to here that. I love this plane very much. It's one of the nicest fuselage shapes I know.
A very merry Christmas my friend.
Patrick

Great start! I would agree that the N28 is a fantastic looking aeroplane - always been one of my favorites.
-
Patrick,
You're off to an excellent start my friend. Keep up the great works.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You and Yours
-
Great start Patrick, that cockpit module is really a standout. I think we all need a break from WNW at some point, if only as a reminder of how great their Kits really are! I have always liked the looks of this one, and recently got one from a member here. Looking forward to following your Build and I'm sure getting some good hints for when I tackle her.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Brilliant work on the office, Patrick, and that engine is fantastic! I agree with the other guys regarding the decals. The Superscale sheet is well worth the money. I built this same kit in 1/48 scale and it was essentially just a scaled down version of the one you're building. I used the kit decals for Rickenbacker's personal markings and the Superscale sheet for the roundels, fin flash, stencils and every thing else. The Roden decals gave me nothing but problems, but the Superscale decals went on flawlessly. I would pass on the Roden decals, my friend.
Cheers,
Bud

Hello Patrick. That's a very nice piece of work on the business end of your Nieuport. I' m looking forward to seeing this one progress.
Best wishes

Hello Petrov, Gregory, Lance, Bud and Nigel,
Thank you all once again for your continued support and the nice words on the started Nieuport. All your comments and advice are so much appreciated, and than,k to guys like you I learn every day. I know I will have a lot of questions left about this build and I must say I'm counting on you all. What Lance said is certainly true. By starting this kit I so much appreciate the unbelievable kits of WnW. But if I could finish this one in a nice way, I would have set a great leap forwards.
I wish you a very fine Christmas Day and for the new year, a year of happiness, joy, good health and outstanding projects.
Very kind regards my friends
Patrick
-
You have made a spectacular start to your Nieport 28 Patrick, the engine and cockpit are looking excellent. You asked if there are any decals better than Roden decals, yes, ANY decals are better than Roden decals.
Des.
-
Thank you very much Des! Indeed I had quite some difficulties applying those on the instruments. I'm looking on the net now and found those of Superscale. I haven't decided yet which one I will apply, Rickenbacker or O'Neill. I'm still not certain if Ron will be able to deliver the pilot's seat and I found some seat belts in the Eduard Store wich I may be acquiring. So I won't be able to close the fuselage yet.
All the best Des!
Kind regards
Patrick

Great progress, as for the seat ill send it in januarie can you measure the space in the cockpit where the seat is going to sit..?
A few people who have used this seat where saying that it wont fit and the seat is to big for the cockpit.
I made it in scale from windsockdata file drawings and a PE set for reference.
If i got the exact measurement i can modify the seat so it wil be a drop in fit instead of surgery to the seat., i only need the with of the seat.
Regards Ron

I still need to decide on markings and thus order some decals Patrick. Also I'll be holding off pending availability of Ron's seat from the new supplier. The "28" is a very pretty and colourful little bird, I really am looking forward to getting a crack at her.

Hello friends,
As I still can't close the fuselage (waiting for the beautiful pilot's seat from Ron) I did the first attempt of painting the multicolor French camo on the upper wing. I like the soft, gentle colors, but "as usual" I had a mishap in putting the clear layer. My airbrush produced a number of spots and I couldn't recover it (meanwhile I found out what the problem was). O well, that's life. Thank you for stopping by and I certainly be glad to hear what could be improved.
Kind regards
Patrick

Patrick, I wonder if you could repaint the areas with the spots with the original colours,
then try the varnish again? The dividing line between colours is very nicely done. Could
you tell me what you used for the CDL? Good work, my friend. I look forward to the next
steps.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thank you so much Ernie! Are you sure that on a clear layer the paint will hold easily. If so then I certainly will try it out. Glad you like the dividing lines my friend.

Now you have me wondering, Patrick. I'm sure it would be ok, but maybe get some other opinions before diving in. Despite what I have told my wife, I have been wrong before. ;D

Very nice work on the wing camo! You have done an excellent job with the demarcations between colors!!

Thank you so much Rick, I owe a great deal to you. Do you think I could paint a new layer of light green above the clear one?
Thanks a lot my friend!

Patrick. Are the "Spots" what I see just to the right of the Black Footprint? If so since the roundel will cover this area I would just give a light sanding with 8000 grit micromesh or similar product and re gloss. If it is necessary to repaint then I would think it is OK to paint over the gloss depending on what paints you are using. You could always shoot some color on a little sheet plastic, gloss it and then try painting over the gloss just to be sure. I hope this is helpful,

Hi Rick,
Thank you my friend. I'll try it out and I'll see how close the roundels come.

G'day, Patrick.
This model is coming together nicely, mate. I also like the colours you used for the wing, would you mind telling us which colours you used? But I really like your cockpit. You've done the rigging very well and I like the colours you used.
As for the spots, this has happened to me when using Future/One Go/ Kleer on humid days (and sometimes with Humbrol Matt varnish as well). With Future, another light coat over the spots can make them disappear (it also works if decal setting solution has made the Future go cloudy). Or you could incorporate the spots into weathering, if you are going to weather the model?
You're doing well, Patrick.
Dal.

Hello Dal,
Thank you very much for your appreciation. I'm very pleased with them. The cockpit although not bad doesn't come close to the one you did. The colors were a great problem to me because it was the first time I did the French Camo. Now Bo advised me to look at the instruction booklet of the WnW Salmson and looking at the schemes I really found there what I was looking for. I used all Tamiya acrylics

Hello,
I finally decided to have a try in modifying the pilot's seat myself, so Ron is a bit more at ease. I can use its (much better!) seat in another Nieuport later on. I tried to make it look a bit worn. It's my first experiment with those slats and the miniput. Thank you for stopping by.

That seat looks great, Patrick. Your cockpit assembly is excellent and you seem to have avoided the problems I did (such as pulling the rigging too tight and warping the frames).
Are you going to glue the fuselage together and slide the cockpit in from the front, or fit the cockpit and then glue the fuselage together? For my build I glued the fuselage first, so I could fit the lower wing, fix the seams and paint them. I then attempted to slide in the cockpit assembly and found I had to sand the rear rear cockpit frame and the inside of the fuselage, so the cockpit would easily fit into the fuselage.
If I was to build another of these I'd fit the cockpit to the fuselage before gluing it together, ensuring that the firewall (part 7B) fitted properly (if the cockpit is sitting too far forward it makes it difficult to fit the firewall). Then I'd fit the lower wing and paint it and the fuselage together, so I could avoid doing the touch up painting I had to do.
Cheers.
Dal.
-
Patrick,
Your seat in place looks even better than before! Your interior is excellent!~ Like Dal said I changed the assembly sequence in my build and glued the interior in before assembling the fuselage halves. It worked like a charm for me.
RAGIII
-
Hello Dal and Rick,
Thank you for your much appreciated advice and your nice comments. Indeed I already have closed the fuselage and I remebered having read that it was so difficult closing the fuselage and then incorporating the cockpit, so I first glued the interior and then closed the fuselage. Even then it wasn't easy to pull back the cockpit far enough to have a good fit of the firewall. I even had to place the tank a bit further. Here are the results.
Kind regards and thank you again my friends!

I like the idea of mapping out your painting beforehand. I think it helps by drawing it
out first. I'm looking forward to your next bits. Nice progress, my friend!

Good morning, evening, night, my friends
I made some progress on the Nieuport. I painted the camo, put on the undercarriage and mounted the cabane struts. Thank you for stopping by.
Kind regards
Patrick
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y385/IFF1418/sized_Nieuport28_32_zps9e0771fe.jpg)
The undercarriage was mounted with the little jig :

I made a little jig for mounting the cabane struts. In the base plate 4 holes corresponding with the holes on the upper wing. Then i mounted 2 cubes forming right angles with the plate and the struts are upside down fixed with tape against the cubes with the pins in the holes of the base plate. Then the jig is placed upside down on the a/c.

Hello Rick,
Thank you so much, it's really nice to have you along. And you know the kit very well don't you. The difficult thing is to correctly tape the struts against the cubes. Once this is done, it's really a helpfull little jig. Thank you my friend.

Hi Mark,
Thank you so much for your nice comments. It gradually became my favourite a/c too. It has an elegance and is imho so well proportioned. It will not be my last Nieuport build I'm sure.

Patrick, my friend, you are making wonderful progress on your Nieuport! The
undercarriage looks great and your jig for the cabanes worked like a charm!

Hello dear Ernie,
Thank you so much for your kind words. I really appreciate this knowing your excellent skills. The thing I most learned is to be patient and not to be pleased to quickly. I feel I have progressed by little steps, but this doesn't mean I'm coming near you all. Thank you again my friend!

Hello Patrick, it's great to follow your progress on this and you are doing a fine job.
I like the idea of the undercarriage jig. The ideas just keep on coming on this forum!

Hello Nigel and Bob,
Thank you both for your kind words. It is much appreciated from modelers from who I can learn a lot. I hope that the jig could be used in many cases. Of course fro every a/c a new one must be made. It helped me a lot. Thank you again!

Sorry, Patrick -
Just catching up with your build - looking great so far - your seat modification was clever as was the method you used for setting up the cabane struts.
Is this the 32nd scale Roden N28? If so, I've built this one in the past myself and thought it was one of Roden's best kit in this scale.
Regards
Dave
-
Thank you very much Dave for the kind words. Indeed it is the Roden kit in 1/32 scale. I must say that the kit (up to now) gave me not many problems, but the top wing still needs to be installed. I like this a/c very much and this will certainly not be my last one. I meanwhile received the beautiful seat that Ron made and this is a lot nicer than the one I made.
Cheers

Hi all,
The Nieuport is finished. It was a pleasant a/c to make and the kit was good imho.
Thank you for stopping by.
Kind regards

Beautiful job Patrick! That's the scheme I will be doing when I get around to this aircraft. She's a real inspiration. ;D Very well done!

Superb job, Patrick -
This is a good kit from Roden and you have certainly done it justice, mate. I assume the swirling markings on the cowling are decals?

Patrick,
All I can say is WOW! What a beautiful Nieuport you have built!! You have far surpassed my humble build. Your cowling is perfect, rigging is excellent, and the paint work is gorgeous! I cant say enough about this one!!

Patrick,
Absolutely beautiful; great colours and painting, nicely done rigging, and clean work. You should be proud of this one.............She's a real winner!
What's next on the workbench?

Hello Bob, Martin, Dave, Rick and Lance,
Thank you so much for your so kind comments and appreciation :). It is very much apprerciated coming from you so highly skilled modelers (and I mean that!)
I owe a lot to the build logs of all.
Bob : I'm sure your Nieuport will be a terrific one once you tackle it
Martin: Thank you, do you plan to do it sometime?
Dave : Yes, the swirlings on the engine cowling are decals, not an easy job but once one side done, the other side was much easier.
Rick : How can you say that, yours was just another scheme, which I liked very much too and your painting skills largely surpass mine. I liked your colors very much , a bit softer than Roosevelt's a/c, and I like soft coloring. this one is a bit "crowded" I think.
Lance: I'm still thinking about that, probably a Spad VII
Thank you again gentleman
Kind regards

Hello Patrick:
Great job on the Nie 28!! This was one of my earlier efforts and I thought the kit went together quite well. You did a great job on this especially with those pesky cowling swirls. Not an easy task lining those up and keeping symetry. I don' t think the colors look crowded at all, they look spot on to me. Looking forward to your SPAD. ;)
Best

Hello Mark,
Thank you my friend for your kind words. Your cowling on your Nieuport served as an example to me. You were so kind to send me a good photo of it at the time. What I meant by "crowded" was not the painting itself, I like it, but the number of numbers "14" all over and the white paint above the fuselage. As it seems it was the marking of a flight leader I did it for the authenticity. But it is a lovely plane and the build was very enjoyable.
Thank you again my friend

What is next on the to do list?

Hello Bob,
Thank you for the nice comment! Much appreciated. The next one, well I'm still in doubt, it could be the Spad VII or even be a Nieuport Bébé. I like them both.
Thank you again Bob.
Kind regards

Hello Patrick,
not for the next time. My next model will be the Blue Max Halbertsadt D II/III in 1:48 from Lt Frankl.

Beautiful work, Patrick! I think the white upper fuselage actually makes the aircraft look better- more like a sports car. :) And you did a fine job with the nose markings, mate, I don't see what you were worried about.
Excellent, mate.

Fantastic work, Patrick! She's stunning. I don't know what happened to my notifications, but I missed all of your updates since the first. Sorry. I think you did a brilliant job on the seat. You should be proud of how it turned out. Congratulations, my friend.

Hello Bud,
That is quite a compliment my friend. The seat was a first attempt and turned out decently. I loved the build of this a/c. Such a nice and elegant bird. Thank you very much !
Kind regards
Patrick
