I finally got around to photographing my first build since returning to modeling three years ago, a Roden 1/32 Fokker Dr.1 with Pheon decals for the Jasta 13 machine of Leutnant Hermann Becker. My first effort includes some mistakes and problem areas, but the streaking came out pretty well I think, and I like the overall look.

I learned much from this build, including the need to walk away in midstream sometimes, as frustration set in. After a couple of months away, I gave it another try and succeeded. I hope you enjoy it!
Cheers,
Bob

Congratulations Bob, you have created a superb model, the streaking is very well done and your decal application is excellent, this model is as good as any DR.1 that I have seen.

Fantastic build there - looks really great and I would agree the streaking is pulled off very nice!
-
Very nice Bob, and the finish and streaking are excellent. I'm curious, what was the source of your frustration that made you walk away for a while? With me it was fitting the mid wing; I did a full build of the cockpit and exceeded the vertical allowance I had thus had to do some very frustrating workarounds to get a fit and close the upper cowling gap. Despite my dumb move(s) it's still a very reasonable Kit and I plan to do another.
Cheers,
Lance

A beautiful piece of work Bob. Very convincing.
Best wishes

Lovely Bob,
How did you tackle the streaking? Looks spot on..

That is a super job Bob! The paintwork is really good, especially the
streaking, which isn't easy but you have done a wonderful job on. I am
looking forward to more 1/32 models from you. Well done!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Beautiful tripe Bob. I like the streaking very much and the overall look it's quite convencing.
You may have had some frustrations along the way but in the end you have a model to be proud of. Congrats.
Cheers

Beautiful Fokker. I like the superb streaking camo.
-
A sweet Dr.1 Bob, love the streaking, yes please explain your technique for the streaking.
Cheers
Pete.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! The streaking is Windsor & Newton Griffyd Alkyd fast-drying oil over acrylic base. I learned the technique from a modeler named Viking on the Britmodeller site. You can check out this link to my Dr.I build of Lothar Von Richthofen's tripe on this site for some information on how I did the streaking. There's also a helpful link to another tutorial:

The technique is simple (this was my first attempt) and VERY forgiving--the oils dry slowly enough that if you don't like what you've done. you can either add more paint and keep blending/streaking, or wipe everything off and try again. I am sure that it can be improved upon as well. The caveat is the same one for using oils to simulate wood. The painted surfaces are a dust magnet so a dust free box for drying is a must.
I picked this scheme because I thought that the use of black on the rudder and top wing insignia fields was interesting and unusual, because it was mostly overall green streaked, and because I liked the fuselage logo. ;D
You were vert kind not to point out the major construction flaw, which I tried to disguise as best I could with photo angles. It involves hasty and careless part selection by the novice modeler. I suppose I could tear it apart and correct it, but that would create new problems, and I like the way the model looks even with the mistake. Besides, it's a good ever-present reminder to be careful and take my time. ;) Ten points to the first one to spot the error! ;D
Cheers,
Bob

Hi Bob
Like you I think the best way of achieving the streaking is via the use of oils, with the advantages and caveat you note. I also like mixing my own olivey green.
With or without the constructional flaw you hint at, this remains a beauty. As to the flaw, my guess would be the bar immediately behind the machine guns with the leather padding. Is it upside down?
Best wishes
Nigel

Lovely Dreidecker. Your streaking looks spot on.
-
Yes indeed Bob, your streaking looks very realistic and the model itself is a gem.
Ten points to the first one to spot the error! ;D
Ummmm . . . I'm just a novice, but even I know a biplane has only two wings. ;D ;)
Cheers,

Hello Bob,
You should be very proud of your Tripe. It's very well painted and looks very neat. The decals are terrific too. Congratulations!
Kind regards
Patrick

I support Nigel for the "ten points"; the shape of the leather padding and cross piece on the gun butts is upside down compared to any info I've seen. It can happen to all of us; I've had to re-do ailerons in the past due to painting them all backwards re: top/bottom finish.
Still is a lovely Build regardless and the paint work really is masterful.
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks for pointing out the upside down gun butt pads. I had not noticed that before! (Who says I'm not oblivious?!) ;D. I've seen enough variety in the gun pads in photos such that it doesn't bother me, but I'll make sure they are correct on my next dreidecker. :) That's not the one I'm looking for, but I'll award 10 points to Nigel anyway for his astute observation, and since the points are worthless anyway. :D
Look a little more closely. Hints: (1) as noted before, I chose the wrong part; (2) Werner Voss did not fly this Dr.I. That should give it away. I'm glad it's not that noticeable. :D

-
First let me say this is a Stunning Tripe! Your Streaking is beautiful!! As for the wrong part could it be the Curved Tail Plane? Hard to tell from the photo angles.
RAGIII
-
Yup. You got it Rick. I can't figure out how I grabbed the F.1 tail and didn't notice it until I was finished. Oblivious! ::). Live, build and learn. ;)
Regards,
Bob

Very fine model. Sharp and clean. A pleasure to behold, even though it is a Fokker ;)
-
Mistake? What the hell! How many people would notice if you did not point it out? I know the feeling that you want things to be "just right" but how many of us actually achieve it? I know that I do not and I have to live with it. I think that this is a brilliant model with a superb finish (wish I could achieve that quality of streaking), and for a first attempt after a long break, something to be very proud of. If this is the standard of your start, your later models must be near perfect!! Congrats many times over.
-
Nice work !
-
She's gorgeous, Bob! The streaking is among the best I've seen. Very smooth. Not easy to pull off. Rick beat me to the tail plane. I wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't put the challenge out there. You can really be proud of this one.
Cheers,
Bud

A great model mate, it looks really impressive. I think your streaking is superb!
-
Thanks so much everyone! I really do like the way this model turned out and its overall appearance. The mistakes are minor and generally not noticeable. I pointed out the mistaken tailplane merely as commentary on my tendency to rush things a bit and step in it now and again. ::) A cautionary tale (or in this case, tail!) ;D. This happens to all of us from time to time.
If any of you are planning to build a Dr.1, in any scale, give the streaking technique described above a try. It realy is fun to do, and the results look pretty good. You can really play with it to get the look you want. Have fun!
Cheers,
Bob
-
You've certainly inspired me to have go at a Dr.I at this scale Bob. The only question is as to where it fits on the list.
Best wishes

Hello Bob:
Looks pretty dag nab good to me! My first foray returning WWI modeling was, as you, the 1/32nd DRI by Roden. I left out the instruments! I too rushed. I like the way yours turned out, mistakes not withstanding: I too like the black tail and the black for the wing and fuselage markings, really sets it apart from the others. I will do another one, just not sure which one. As someone wrote, the best model you ever built is the one you just finished. It is fun to look back. Thanks for sharing this. I will have to try the streaking technique using oils this next go around. I also have the Academy kit and will try that as well.
Best wishes for your Christmas and New Year.

Your Fokker looks great, especially after a long break in modeling.
Precisely what painting I like because the same model I made as the first 1:32 scale, I invite you here:
