Title: Kempf's Dr.I roden 1/32
Post by: mc65 on November 18, 2013, 06:43:07 AM
hi all!

waiting for alclads for the nieuport project, I opened another box from the stash... also this one is for a friend, who wants it straight from the box and in the friedrich kemp's painting.

I must say that this kit is far ahead compared with the other WWI aircrafts I did since now: nice surfaces, good joints, well designed kit and details.

just to say, the following photos are the result of an afternoon session! I'm very pleased about, thinking to purchase another one to myself!

I started building the internal nose structure, absent in the kit, but provided in the eduard set. I used the PE as template, and did it with evergreen.
8496(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8496_zpsea3e37c2.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8496_zpsea3e37c2.jpg.html)

instead to solder a new seat with brass sheets from tom's modelwork, I gave a try at the kit's one. just trimming the ends and cushioning it. the harnesses are also from eduard, but I burned out the paint on them, I didn't like that prepainted film. also, they where so rigid... a go on open flame softened the metal at best.
8498(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8498_zpscc284239.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8498_zpscc284239.jpg.html)

I tried to stay at the "customer" wishes, but some bits where the minimum!
8502(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8502_zpsb8833d0b.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8502_zpsb8833d0b.jpg.html)

waiting the cockpit's frame glue drying, I assembled the eduard spandaus mantelts. sturdier than the tom's ones, but good enough, I guess.
8503(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8503_zps252e6c8c.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8503_zps252e6c8c.jpg.html)

and here the internal frame, ready to paint. after I'll give it instruments and other bits.
8513(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8513_zps20babec5.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8513_zps20babec5.jpg.html)

all the parts that will fill the fuselage... I just discovered that the fuel tank was also the oil tank... so I'm studying the way to open the other hole on the fuselage and build another filler neck similar to the fuel one.
8512(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8512_zps3b9cdaad.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8512_zps3b9cdaad.jpg.html)

another detail completely wrong it's the front cowl: it misses the round riveted contour and edge. I'm guessing how to solve this prominent fail of the kit.
8493(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8493_zps0def02e0.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8493_zps0def02e0.jpg.html)

well, I'm pretty satisfied for a single session, especially considering that I just wanted to fill a little free time studying the box!
bye, p. ;)

For just one session you have made excellent progress, everything you have done so far looks very good, I'm sure your friend will be very pleased with the results.

I have one of these in my stash Paolo so I will enjoy following your build, hoping
to pick up some of your great ideas.  The seatbelts look very good...kind of dirty
and used.  Very nice work on the interior.  I will be anxious to see how you improve
the cowling.  I didn't realise that it was not right.  Thank you for letting us know!

Cheers,
Ernie :)

You're doing a great job Paolo!  The cockpit was the toughest part of the two of these that I nave built, and you made it look easy! ;D  There are a couple of fixes for the cowling rivets.  You can wrestle with a PE part that someone makes (I don't recall who), or you can order a relatively inexpensive resin cowling with rivets from Ron Kootje's shop here on the forum.  I have one of those for my next DR1.

Regards,

Bob

I agree, Rons Cowling looks to be great! Your cockpit improvements look terrific as do your Spandaus!

thank you all very much!
the easy link with the ron's work of upgrading is great! :D :D :D

my friend is lucky, but has an hard head.... seeing the wip of this Dr.I, he fall in love, and ordered two more kits, asking me to build also an udet's one, and an F.I with red upper wing... nothing to comply, it's an easy kit, with just some few improvements needed, so it's a matter of quick build and have fun with painting.
improvements that I judge a must, and he a nice... so, for instance, the cowl trouble can be solved just by colors, to him.
obviously, I'm not contrary to that, it's just against my religion!

I found a possible way to solve the cowling case... I may cut out the circular front section as per pencil line, then thin the cowl from inside, and then put in a new front plate from plasticard.
8590(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8590_zps780b9ff6.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8590_zps780b9ff6.jpg.html)
quite easy, I suppose... for a single sample, but for 3-4 of them?!? look at them side by side will show some little differences, I fear...  :o

I'll think at that then, today I'm enough stressed by weather, this morning I had crosswind up to 47 kts on short final, with heavy rain and thunderstorms all around the field... so, all I want now it's just to relax!

and that I did. I played a little with colors on nieuport, and I took advantage from the dirty iwata also on this one.
but, before the paint shots, some home made upgrading..
the upper fuselage cowling. I opened the second hole for the oil filler neck, closed the holes intended for the spandaus, and opened those for the ailerons cables. also, I opened the hole within will find home the RPM gauge.
8532(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8532_zps672a7228.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8532_zps672a7228.jpg.html)

the new filler neck,
8534(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8534_zps547fec9c.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8534_zps547fec9c.jpg.html)

and how it sits in place.
8536(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8536_zpsbb602325.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8536_zpsbb602325.jpg.html)

and now, the paint. some effects on the ammo cans,
8541(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8541_zps7d68b880.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8541_zps7d68b880.jpg.html)

a metallic base for the engine,
8543(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8543_zpsf9d74737.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8543_zpsf9d74737.jpg.html)

some green on the cockpit frame...
8546(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8546_zps7400e34a.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8546_zps7400e34a.jpg.html)

and the base colors for the interior.

next steps, some painting by brush on them.
bye bye, p. ;)

thank you, pals..

I'm taking this project as a time-filler while something else is stopped on the bench, and I'm enjoying this approach.

today I just put together some details and corrected with colors the cockpit area:
8598(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8598_zps0cdb4709.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8598_zps0cdb4709.jpg.html)

also, the soft approach of my friend made me free (actually, oblige me) to skip on some details, so all is fast!
8602(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8602_zps8d0238c2.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8602_zps8d0238c2.jpg.html)

in example, I follow the eduard instructions, not bothering too much about the right spot for the magneto switch..
8608(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8608_zpsbcc2e86e.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8608_zpsbcc2e86e.jpg.html)

well, the compass should be right, there!
8605(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8605_zps45af4a88.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8605_zps45af4a88.jpg.html)

before starting with shadow and aging, I tried it inside the fuselage.
8614(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8614_zps173c1a69.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8614_zps173c1a69.jpg.html)
8615(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8615_zps65cf8659.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8615_zps65cf8659.jpg.html)

as last thing, i prepared the RPM's nest. I like very much the design of this aircraft, it's so modern, for its time!
8621(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8621_zps364dd065.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8621_zps364dd065.jpg.html)

bye ye, p. ;)

Nice work so far and so fast.  I like what you did with the cockpit, maximum results.  I have some extra filler necks from my WNW DVII builds that I am saving for this one when I get to it.  I will be following your build.

Best

quite easy...

I hope eduard do not be offended!
here the measures in millimeters. oops! that "28" does not mean anything!
(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8718_zps29537ec0.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8718_zps29537ec0.jpg.html)

and here the development of a prototype in paper.
8719(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8719_zps459586ae.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8719_zps459586ae.jpg.html)

8720(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8720_zpse64c0d90.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8720_zpse64c0d90.jpg.html)

8721(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8721_zpsceee8f51.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8721_zpsceee8f51.jpg.html)

the best thing is to use a brass sheet, or thin plastic card.
another thing that probably should be considered is to do it shallower, I guess (I'm sure) that at that time there were no bootlang jeppesen, and the necessary maps to fly VFR with less than 300km of endurance does not require too much space...

bye, p. ;)

glad to be of some help...

after a duty tour I found that nice thing in the mailbox:
8914(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8914_zpsa7515a83.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8914_zpsa7515a83.jpg.html)

and a trouble it's solved... ;)

then I could do very little, but I put hand to another minute detail:
this is the window corresponding to the wing spar of the upper wing, through which were visible mark, code and serial number assigned by the commission responsible of construction supervision (bauaufsicht) which in turn was under the control of aviation Inspectors' army (idflieg).
(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/Schermata2013-11-22a232221_zpse7702150.png) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/Schermata2013-11-22a232221_zpse7702150.png.html)

(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/Schermata2013-11-22a232818_zps41e75b0c.png) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/Schermata2013-11-22a232818_zps41e75b0c.png.html)

commissions were numbered from 1 to 45 (less than 28, go figure why) and verified the entire production cycle of the machines, numbering each part. at the end of the process, a machine's number was given, and written on the spar, visible through the window together with logo and symbol ZAK (Abnahme Zentral Kommission).
is interesting (and bizarre) to note that the codes did not match with the werk numbers... but I think I found the correspondence table.

all this to say what? that I located and opened the window...
8924(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8924_zpsa18e2ac5.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8924_zpsa18e2ac5.jpg.html)

or better, the windows! the other two kits are arrived, too...
8922(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8922_zpsc68772d4.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8922_zpsc68772d4.jpg.html)

also I worked serially other parts, trying to do all identical. well, similar.
8920(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8920_zpsa8a77da7.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8920_zpsa8a77da7.jpg.html)

also, I tried to rebuild the seat frame and his curtain behind. too long story, and I'm not convinced at all from the results.
8919(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_8919_zps8409972e.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_8919_zps8409972e.jpg.html)

after some mails with "the customer", we agree to switch to "just" two Dr.I to him (Kempf/Udet) and to go for a wnw rumpler C IV... but I'm keep going on all three fokkers, you never know... all in all, I may retain one for me.
in this case, I like very much the Kempf's machine, but I'm not sure to really want to build two of them in the same time... any suggestions for an intriguing livery?

bye bye, p. ;)

Hello Paolo:

I think the stiching will be fine once the "fabric" is painted and you highlight the stiching.  Once in the airplane with the seat, seat belts, and everything else that will be packed into the cockpit, it will look like it belongs.  You are taking on quite a project.  Good Luck and it will be fun to see how you progress through the build.

Best

Mark

yes... it's a long way to achieve some results, working like that. ::)

I received the eduard's PE, so I pushed up some detailing on fuselage(s) wings (a lot of wings!) and tails...
9021(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9021_zps36a16024.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9021_zps36a16024.jpg.html)

this time I tried to chew a little the map cases:
9024(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9024_zps048a9412.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9024_zps048a9412.jpg.html)

also, I worked on the basic spandaus. nextly, the rear details.
9023(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9023_zps1a6d14a9.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9023_zps1a6d14a9.jpg.html)

with PE, mr. kit's fokker dedicated colors finally arrived home. unfortunately, I've very little free time, these days. :-[
9027(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9027_zpsd5938006.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9027_zpsd5938006.jpg.html)

but managed to do some trying on paper, tomorrow (maybe) I'll try the green straining on torquoise...

first of all i must say, nice work on a great kit. i like rodens 1/32 dr.1. recently some were requesting a wnw dr.1 but i say this kit can be made into a fine dr.1 so wnw should do other planes that have no kit in 1/32. your detailing looks nice. i like the way you shaded details in the cockpit as well as the overall color scheme you used on the cockpit. some comments. i think the mr. kit fokker pale green is for fokker eindeckers and fokker olive green is for dr.1. second to my eye the eduard photoetch map casepart looks bulky. i dont use mine. i like to use german ww2infantry pouches designed for 1/35 figures. to me this looks better.like the type you find with figure sets, the pouch that mounts on the soldiers rear. i have spares if you wish me to send you some.

thanks all...

albatros, you're right, the eduard's map case it's too bulky, I'll try to do something smaller. the WH map cases seems a good idea, except I fear they may seem too what they are, to my eyes!

about the green, I a-gree(n) with you, the pale one is too light. today I did some trials, and I reached those results:
1) the green alone it's not enough, to reach the desired effect. I think it's necessary to add something else, maybe a light brown?
2) also the techniques are not satisfactory. I tried with acrylics applied with various kind of brushes on dry and dampened, plain and future-coated surface.

9041(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9041_zpsa329ab7a.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9041_zpsa329ab7a.jpg.html)

the streaking is too hard-edged, and there is no time to work, with acrylics.
9043(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9043_zps681ca518.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9043_zps681ca518.jpg.html)

9046(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9046_zpsf1e5fa42.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9046_zpsf1e5fa42.jpg.html)

I think that oil colors will work better, to obtain the typical fokker canvas, but I have no idea about wich colors I may use!

any ideas about?

bye bye, p. ;)

Paolo ,
I used enamel for the streaking on mine. The colours were Model Master, 1 part #2096 Chocolate Brown to 2 parts #2106 French Khaki over a base coat of #2102 Afrika Braun. I used a combination of stiff bristle brushes and a "semi dry brush" approach. I liked the results, you can check it out on the completed Models Threads or on my Featured Modeller thread from last year. Hope this gives you some help.
Cheers,
Lance

Hi

I think you're definitely right to consider oils; their slow drying time gives you lots of time to work on the streaking.

As to colour, when I had a go at this my starting point was to mix an olive that looked right by combining lamp back with small amounts of either yellow ochre or cadmium yellow (I can't quite remember which, so I'll have to try and re-mix some). Application was with a stiff square-cut brush, about one-quarter of an inch wide - the sort of thing also used by some for dry-brushing.

As with so many things it comes down to personal preference and what works for you. I think experimenting on plastic card etc as you are doing is essential, and part of the answer is to be prepared to take off quite a lot of colour.

Best wishes
Nigel

Paolo:

You can check out this link to my Dr.I build of Lothar Von Richthofen's tripe for some information on how I did the streaking with artist's fast-drying oils over acrylic base.  There's also a helpful link to another tutorial:

oh oh oh! I knew, santa exists!😜

thank you all very much!😘
when I'll be back home I'll throw the acylics in the paint's drawer, and sit patiently on the mail box.... just asked to a friend with a shop on line an olive green form abteilung's range.

assuming It's necessary to involve colors that smell, I'll go for oils, I like too much their capability to forgive my goofy hand.

thank you again and again, the images (and explanations) are quite inspiring, to me. With these hints, I'll try to do my best with, er, those twelve airfoils!

waiting for the olive green, I did some to close the fuselages.

the fuel/oil tanks,
9050(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9050_zps0a38b27d.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9050_zps0a38b27d.jpg.html)

and the two other cockpits. I decided to try the laced back on the kit that will remain to me.
9053(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9053_zps3acd7dc2.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9053_zps3acd7dc2.jpg.html)

also, I modified the pressure pump on the starboard side. the first one will have the old (mistaken) one, patience...
9058(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9058_zpsec63db19.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9058_zpsec63db19.jpg.html)

on my "copy" I decided to strap the cloche back to the seat with the harnesses. in this manner the elevator will be in the up position , rather unnaturally to the view, but I want to try it.
9057
(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9057_zps80394c49.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9057_zps80394c49.jpg.html)

working on the two new structures, I realized some mistakes done on the first one... the cables from cloche to spandaus. they shouldn't go under the ammo containers... I'll see how to modify that.
also the compass was wrong, I did it leveled with the floor, but it should be parallel to the ground! I modified it easily.
9061(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9061_zps0fa453b7.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9061_zps0fa453b7.jpg.html)

that's all, at now, greetings, p. ;)

Looks great Paolo...

Rereading your log, I can't tell for certain but it seems you might be confused about a small detail ... the fuel gauge is the instrument in the fairing on the top of the fuselage between the guns. The tachometer is typically on the floor behind the control column...

mh. the stitching is rather fragile, as is.
I suppose after a coat of primer will set strongly (at least, so said the instructions) to me the decals are fair better than PE, being quite easy to work with.
just my two cents, obviously! :)

hem... the instruments... those are quite not my worth. the dials are airscale product, simply beautiful, and the gauges aeroclub, idem!

the intentions today where totally different, but I find myself entangled within cockpits and fuselages, so here we are.
9125(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9125_zps1ad5c05e.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9125_zps1ad5c05e.jpg.html)

I wanted to improve the leather pads around the cockpit, and after some trials with green stuff, I tried fimo. I read somewhere that's unnecessary to cook it, so...

thank you all, guys!

today it was a busy day, but I managed to carve out a fully hour of greens...
9151(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9151_zps42310f67.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9151_zps42310f67.jpg.html)

I played a little with three tones of green on hairspray. just for fun.
9152(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9152_zps07375f94.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9152_zps07375f94.jpg.html)

with same colors I started the inspection covers on the top wing(s):
9156(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9156_zpsec44d1ed.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9156_zpsec44d1ed.jpg.html)

also, I predrilled the struts pylons, I hope that the main ones will hold all the load, so these should be there quite easy.
9157(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9157_zps8fc7b765.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9157_zps8fc7b765.jpg.html)

tomorrow, maybe, I'll work on preshading.
I suspect I'll go out of budget with masking tape..... ;D ;D ;D

cheers, p. ;)

I love the chipping on the fuselage top cowling.  It really looks good!  Keep up the fine work Paolo. ;D  I've built two of these, and I'm learning a great deal from your outstanding buld log which I'll put to good use on my next DR.1!  ;)  Thanks!

Cheers,

thank you...

I'm very sorry I have little free time, in these days, so I appear on the site just for insert brief posts, and read in hurry here and there...

about the painting, I prepared a base for the streaking with oils, first of all to discover wich is the best base color:
9159(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9159_zpse7c488d0.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9159_zpse7c488d0.jpg.html)

and prepared the fuselages with primer. here the zip decal from archer after a light coat of vallejo poliurethane primer
9160(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9160_zps24defce2.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9160_zps24defce2.jpg.html)

you may see the decal film's edge shadow... I hope after another coat it will disappear!
9162(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9162_zps3b7eedda.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9162_zps3b7eedda.jpg.html)

when this &/&(NéHGFV£$% olive green oil will arrive, I'll do some tests...
bye, p. ;)

Considering that this is just a "time filler" and you consider it to be a bit "rushed", I wonder why I bother to try building models at all!! This is a simply wonderful build log - I am wholly amazed at how much fine and accurate detail you manage to get into this model. Your craftsmanship is outstanding.

Really beautiful work Paolo, and three of everything! Your interiors are exquisite; I use the Aeroclub and Airscale Products as well but I don't get the magnificent results you do...your instruments are the best I've seen!
Well done, looking forward to following more progress.

it's a long long way ... : - \

returned home, I found the oil color in the inbox, finally! here's some tests:
I tried olive green, raw umber, white. the main objective here is to understand wich is the best base color.
9312(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9312_zpsdb59ebbd.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9312_zpsdb59ebbd.jpg.html)

I think it's the bottom right: Fokker olive green plus RLM 02.
9316(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9316_zpse6966134.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9316_zpse6966134.jpg.html)

the green it's too brilliant, but with some black I suppose it should be good. also, the white it's too much prominent, I guess.
9318(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9318_zps522d0754.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9318_zps522d0754.jpg.html)

and now we are trying to understand wich is the best technique ... acrylic or oil-based. on the left we have acrylics on dump base, and oil on the right. the base too wet leads to bad results, in my opinion (bottom left).
9337(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9337_zps134ff673.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9337_zps134ff673.jpg.html)

it seems acrylic shows his best if a little diluted and applied to the base once wet... but it is difficult to control. the paint dries very quickly, so the errors are impossible to correct. here two WWII germans greens.
9338(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9338_zps3f9c5676.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9338_zps3f9c5676.jpg.html)

the oil. here the olive green corrected with black (left) and with some raw umber. Here it is easier to correct mistakes, but it is difficult to maintain strips with sharp edges.
9339(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9339_zpsa32c4177.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9339_zpsa32c4177.jpg.html)

so, conclusion? ...not yet, keep on going... :o

while thinking at colors, I began to mask and paint the preshading. due to the particular paintings, plenty of black & white, I expect a little nightmare, when on definitive colors. but go step by step.

kilometers of masking tape...
9340(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9340_zps915aaa84.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9340_zps915aaa84.jpg.html)

to achieve some little result...
9355(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9355_zpsdd4e968f.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9355_zpsdd4e968f.jpg.html)

not bad, no?

NO.

there are still all the wings to do, a lot of. and tomorrow I'll leave again.... >:( >:( >:(

ok, I can do it.

to achieve the masks for the triangular areas on the upper wings, I prepared "some" masking tape.....
9463(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9463_zpsa6a6e25f.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9463_zpsa6a6e25f.jpg.html)

it's a long story....
9486(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9486_zps3f75b72c.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9486_zps3f75b72c.jpg.html)

but it's just a matter of put a step after another one.
9487(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9487_zps11c33460.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9487_zps11c33460.jpg.html)

but at now, after a full afternoon, I managed to cover with preshading just the upper surfaces!
9488(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9488_zps21d7081d.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9488_zps21d7081d.jpg.html)

Hello Paolo:

I think I would be driven mad by now.  You are doing a fantastic job here and I am excited to see how these turn out.  The triangle masks on the leading edge is a great idea, albeit a bit tedious, but will pay you dividends when finished.  I like your sample streaking too.  Gives me ideas for my next one.  You have an audience and their attention.  You must continue on.  Keep the faith!  ;)

Best

not as I do!
and today I went from humming to exultation: enough to preliminary! the next session will be of substance, finally!

here we are. upside,
9501(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9501_zps0ef87b10.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9501_zps0ef87b10.jpg.html)

and downside.

well, maybe not the next, there was some damage ...

but thank goodness it's ended the moment "assembly line". models can now continue as individual elements.

thank you all for the attention and the help!

hem, about help.. ::)

before starting with black and white, a doubt arise: the white it's relatively easy to comply with (and moreover I just did it on albatros) but, the black??

here some trials, before mess it all on the kits. I prepared a preshaded base,
9549(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9549_zpsbc733472.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9549_zpsbc733472.jpg.html)

and tried three blacks: black plus sunny skin tone 1:3; b+sst 1:1; pure black.
9550(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9550_zps5fd27463.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9550_zps5fd27463.jpg.html)

9551(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9551_zps6e90b4b2.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9551_zps6e90b4b2.jpg.html)

the first mixture erase totally the preshading, ironically, it works better (or less worst) with black-black... but how to achieve the shaded effect on these parts of the planes?!?

speaking about airbrushing... have a look inside the cup of this iwata?
9547(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/varie/IMG_9547_zps9a449ea3.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/varie/IMG_9547_zps9a449ea3.jpg.html)

it has an year, more or less. cleaning it with aggressive cleaner ablazed away the chrome in the low part of it! :o

Blacks:I wouldn't change anything with your approach. Ambient occlusion (which is what people are really doing when they are "pre-shading") is less apparent the darker the base color.

Airbrush: that's pretty normal. But it should remind you to wear respirator etc! ;D

Title: Re: Kempf's Dr.I roden 1/32

ok... so I'll go ahead...

tonight just a little upgrading, tomorrow early wake up, and the white bottle decided to end her life on the floor...  :( :( :( :( :(
9656(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9565_zps11c38d7b.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9565_zps11c38d7b.jpg.html)

about the respirator, when I realized how strong is this product, I switched from the paper masks to this one... heavy, but far better!
9348(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/varie/IMG_9348_zpsa9728d6e.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/varie/IMG_9348_zpsa9728d6e.jpg.html)

and it has a nice bonus: when I answer to the phone, I do a reasonable effect "darth vader"!!! ;D ;D ;D

'night, p. ;)

aaaaah... after another session of extreme masking, I really began to loose my faith...

http://youtu.be/11Ee02WLxGk

and here we are. a pair of men dressed in white are knocking at my door, demanding to get me dressed with a shirt with sleeves fastened behind. fun.
but in the meantime I managed to get something.

mmmmhhh... not so black, maybe.
9569(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9569_zps7976745f.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9569_zps7976745f.jpg.html)

but at least it's possible to see something of the preshading... I think.
9571(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_9571_zps6f3e1e62.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_9571_zps6f3e1e62.jpg.html)

and the important it's the contrast with the white... hey, on skin seems black-black!

The mega-masking is paying off, Paolo...but we all knew it would.
The striping has come off beautifully as well as the preshading.
Great progress on the Tripes.

Hello Paolo:  I think it looks doggone outstanding.  Painting stripes is difficult to get the proper spacing, and your stripes look spot on in the picture.  Your preshading is really nice, just subtle enough to see but not out of line.

Looking forward to more.  Glad to see you have a respirator, I got one several years ago and wear it every time I paint.  Really saves on the lungs.

and now the part that I fear most, the stripes!

studying old photographs in order to understand its trend, I noticed that the white that surrounds the crosses on the wing is much darker than the one on the tail... just dirty... or something else? :o

Hello Paolo:

I think you nailed it, just dirty, other causes could be the lighting.  The wing upper surface is at an angle to the sun which could be skewing the image, whereas the tail and rudder are in a more direct attitude towards the sun, which appears directly overhead in the photo.  The underlying streaking could be bleeding through a bit as well on the cross surround on the upper wing.  Your model could be depicting a less weathered airframe than the photo.

In other photos of Kempf's Dr.1 taken around the same period the fields behind the crosses appear to be white, just a bit dirty.

Note the Jasta Boelcke field mod to the landing gear evident in the above photo -- an extra brace. Also note that color on the lower surfaces is applied after the streaking finish -- the so-called "return" of the lower surface color is visible at the bottom edge of the fuselage.

ok... thank you for the help!

I was just asking myself about that bright stripe in the low part of the fuselage... so that means, as you say, that the under color was applied after the streaking; and, significantly, that the upper and under colors are two different things!
ohi ohi ohi.... :'( :'( :'(

hem... I'm not able to catch the extra brace on the undercarriage... it's that under the cowling?  ???

hem... I'm not able to catch the extra brace on the undercarriage... it's that under the cowling?  ???

it's more apparent in some of the other pics of this aircraft... it's this thing -- an extra strut from the "wing" between the wheels up to the fuselage rear wheel struts. Several Jasta Boelcke Dr.1s seem to have this mod.

I think the arrangement is something like this:

blue = existing struts
red = tubular brace, external, field mod.
yellow = brace from horizontal tube to back? of rear strut?

The differences between the wings is very subtle but noticeable.  It will be neat to see how this turns all turns out.  I couldn't imagine trying to do three of these at one time, one at a time is enough for me.  Looking forward to your next update.

thank you, bo...

unfortunately, in the last times I'm very busy with the "real" life, so I do very little around the bench. ..and this little goes wrong! :'(

since the last painting session, I improved (?) it with oils:
1880(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_1880_2_zpsa0f63814.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_1880_2_zpsa0f63814.jpg.html)

but I'm not satisfied. I hope that doing other streaks with oils, and then postshading will help, but I'm not sure at all about it.

meanwhile, I experienced other nice things...
the beautiful, crispy, decals,
1890(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_1890_zps0608fb6d.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_1890_zps0608fb6d.jpg.html)

and the funny transparent effect of them!
1921(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_1921_zpsaaf840bb.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_1921_zpsaaf840bb.jpg.html)

I'm still searching solutions for those... at least something not so frustrating.
1923(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_1923_zpsd17daf64.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_1923_zpsd17daf64.jpg.html)

the worst of all is the turquoise base of two of them. I dislike it totally, even if the friend to whom they will go wants them like that.
so, I keep on going with the other two Dr. just with oils:
2164(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_2164_zps80a73c1a.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_2164_zps80a73c1a.jpg.html)

also the doped one is... is... bwarf. :(
2162(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_2162_zps2f7a29e8.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_2162_zps2f7a29e8.jpg.html)

in the end, here we are. I think that the only way to combat this feeling is go ahead, so...
2169(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_2169_zps5967e83c.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_2169_zps5967e83c.jpg.html)

bye, p.

Hello Paolo:

I think you are right.  Soldier on.  The streaking is difficult at best.  I think once the model is finished, it looks better.  I like what you have done and I think your friend will like it as well.  Too bad about those pesky Roden Decals.  I think with the LO, just go over it with red paint, very carefully of course and you will be fine.  I like the "LO" scheme of Udet, and if I did it I would use a mask for the LO so the black streaks wouldn't show through.  Glad to see you back at it and I am looking forward to seeing your completed works.

Hi Paolo,
I'm with Mark and Bo, your streaking finish(s) looks really good to me, and as Mark pointed out that particular finish looks better once the model comes together at the completion stage. I've only done this finish once and it is a very difficult one to replicate, you've done a fine job. This is a very large and ambitious project that I`m enjoying following........keep at them!

Thank you all, gents!
actually I can not stand the various failures of this project, but I must to admit that layer above layer of oil streaks is improving this damn finish.

some sparse improvement; in the last period I am working away from home six days, one out of service, simulator, + 5 on duty... really no time to paint!
I hope to steal half a day in the next few days to try some airbrushing postshading with oils around...

here we are today:
high contrast in sunlight image to show the "new" stripes. here the difference between the blue and sand base it's no so evident. ....may be?

a sample wing each of one of the three, I tried to differentiate also the direction and "heaviness" of the striking on.

thank you all!
I really appreciate your encouragement, I need it here! :'(

in fact, the model is suffering, okay, but here is exaggerated!!

I started putting the decals, thinking to do some postshading after a coat of transparent to protect them.
wrong idea.
first of all the decals , apparently well placed and dry, revealed a wild silvering after the coat of transparent.
2382(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_2382_zpsaddeacab.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_2382_zpsaddeacab.jpg.html)

I solved it by making cuts with a scalpel and by filtering in the tamiya decals solution. I'm usually very careful to use it , since it's particularly aggressive, but this time I have not done scruples.
2386(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_2386_zpsfb842715.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_2386_zpsfb842715.jpg.html)

then, I masked to give a pale blue colour to the third Dr.I, the one without the turquoise base above and below.
the one that can be seen on the belly of the bottom is the holy shroud of the decal.. I think it's right. too much right. I'm still counting to not scream in rage...
having finished black crosses decals, I think I'll paint them... ooooooooooookay........
2389(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_2389_zps2f778dcb.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_2389_zps2f778dcb.jpg.html)

of course also the fuselage's K (partially) abandoned. lord give me strength... here I've already taken the contours black. tomorrow I'll paint the white inside.
2390(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_2390_zps99c7e1cb.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_2390_zps99c7e1cb.jpg.html)

the upper wing of the sand's kempf. I'll have to do for the other one some masks, since my friend prefers the lettering without the black border. if nothing else painting them will make them not jump off!
2393(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_2393_zpsdeb319cf.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_2393_zpsdeb319cf.jpg.html)

Now I dread to mask again to make postshading. damn me and when I agreed to do this Dr.. >:( >:( >:(

about the wheels, I decided to make them like that thinking about the method of painting the wings on the real aircraft: consider adopting the same system for radial strips of paint makes me think it would come out just a big mess..
maybe (definitely) I'm wrong, but now I realized that this project was born bad, better make peace with this concept and try to close it!

mmmmmmmmhhh. dunno.... ::)

meantime I think about the wheels, I tried some postshading.
needless to say, other decals went damaged in the demasking process... how much patience.

so, no more postshading with airbrush.
here after some restoration, just to see how bad is the whole.

hi ho!

who isn't die, show himself!
I must admit that this project had me deeply disappointed, so all these months I did something else, not winged, in the time devoted to modeling ... but here I am, I hate to leave things unfinished.

I tried to address the many flaws of the final result of this trio of triplanes with the effects of glossy-matte alternating strips. effects are not definitive, but it seems promising.
0365(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0365_zpsemg1hszd.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0365_zpsemg1hszd.jpg.html)

then I have dedicated myself to engine exhaust and stains with a range of ready made products and oils diluted.
0371(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0371_zpsqhz9t3px.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0371_zpsqhz9t3px.jpg.html)

0372(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0372_zpsvarf1cfa.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0372_zpsvarf1cfa.jpg.html)

0373(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0373_zps1sdc5noj.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0373_zps1sdc5noj.jpg.html)

0375(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0375_zpspnh48soc.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0375_zpspnh48soc.jpg.html)

I made a single propeller, here still to be completed, to see if I was persuaded about, and I honestly do not know, if it persuades me...
0383(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0383_zpschun83sg.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0383_zpschun83sg.jpg.html)

and then I moved on to the final assembly. machine guns, upper wing, landing gear, tie rods. the latter have been embarrassing, especially in the black areas ... 5,000 lumens were not enough to show me the cables!
0379(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0379_zpsi9wbmup2.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0379_zpsi9wbmup2.jpg.html)

but in the end...
0466(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0466_zpsauoulgyb.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0466_zpsauoulgyb.jpg.html)

0467(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0467_zpseuck33mg.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0467_zpseuck33mg.jpg.html)

I used the excellent bob's tubes just in a couple of points..
0468(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0468_zpslpjyhyvo.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0468_zpslpjyhyvo.jpg.html)

while to assemble the upper wings I used provisional brass pins to adjust the angle of connection to the fuselage. I still have to replace them with something definitive.
0469(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0469_zpsotxpwa0k.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0469_zpsotxpwa0k.jpg.html)

and here we are.
0470(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0470_zps5a19ygoa.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0470_zps5a19ygoa.jpg.html)

0472(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0472_zps6xtpxtvz.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0472_zps6xtpxtvz.jpg.html)

0474(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0474_zpsfjokskdv.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0474_zpsfjokskdv.jpg.html)

still missing dust, mud, further stains, and I'm thinking at a semigloss overall overspray..
0416(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0416_zps0ljzi15q.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0416_zps0ljzi15q.jpg.html)

0424(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0424_zps9eeca8gk.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0424_zps9eeca8gk.jpg.html)

0435(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/Dr%20I/IMG_0435_zpsdhftcqd4.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/Dr%20I/IMG_0435_zpsdhftcqd4.jpg.html)

Now it comes to understanding how to permanently close this ugly chapter and look to the future, inevitably WNW...

bye bye, p. ;)

In spite of your frustrations you have achieved STUNNING results! Your Streaking is certainly amongst the best I have seen and the Markings on all look fabulous! I love the Oil Stains from the engine!

very good work. I learn a lot about the way to paint a drI .
tell me about this picture.
the plane has diferent crosses than yours. Is it a third one or have one of your two plane be repainted?

Absolutely beautiful work, Paolo.  Congratulations on your
amazing accomplishment!  A very big job, but you pulled
it off brilliantly.  I don't think the streaking could get any better. :D

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Paolo, I love the work you have done here and have learned so much from it.

I have one question. Someone has warned me about the interplane struts, telling me that they require major surgery to fit accurately. Did you have any such problem with them?

Best wishes
Nigel

All those problems, and the end results are really nice....  You overcame a lot of major issues.  The oil streaking is really great.  We have an saying at work; "What makes a good model maker, is not that you won't make a mistake, because you will, it's how well you can recover from your mistake."  Clearly your a good model maker....That was a good recovery....

thank you all, gents!

really, I'm so bored about this project that I pick up from the stash something so bad and ugly to try to rejoin the WWI modeling area... :o
0581(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/mc65-1/sd%20kfz%20232%206%20rad/IMG_0581_zpsmw0s6o3l.jpg) (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/mc65-1/media/sd%20kfz%20232%206%20rad/IMG_0581_zpsmw0s6o3l.jpg.html)

nigel, the wing struts are pretty sturdy, just you'll have to test fit those, eventually enlarging a little bit the holes in the wings... using the flex-i-file glue I literally "solved" any occurence.... ;)

xan, my god! that picture made me mad for a while!
after some deep breathing, now I suppose and tell to myself that it's just a repainting of the black crosses on the second machine, being the first one the number 213/17...
