Fantastic. I have one of these in the loft.Wlelcome!
-
If I didn't know that I was viewing photos of a model, I would have assumed the images were of an actual aircraft. Following this thread will be a fascinating (and humbling) experience.
-
Dan,
Welcome here, and what an incredible project. It will be very interesting to follow this and then some!
Truly a revelation; in my mid 50's I moved from 1:72 to 1;48 Scale, then up to 1:32 in my 60's as fat fingers and optical challenges forced me up the scale ladder, now I see there's a comfortable option for when I hit my 80's......... :o ::) !!
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks guys!
Thanks guys!
I do my best!
Today, control stick area is complete:

Feel free to any question...
Dan.

Absolutely incredible workmanship you have displayed here Dan, your skills are remarkable and I look forward to seeing more of this amazing build.

This is such excellent craftsmanship that if I didn't know it was improvements on a SCALE MODEL, I would think I was watching a Replica build in 1/1 scale :D

Dan.

This is really extraterrestrial Dan. You are unbelievable.
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Astonishing detail, Dan! I'm using your build as a reference for when I do mine in 1/48 scale. This is like looking at the real thing.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Wow.
-
Dan,
On the scale 1 to 10 of Awesomeness this project is at the very least a 20! Now that's very very impressive my friend. Not the slightest doubt that she soon surpass even this rating with the next Outstanding update. If I sound in awe of your skill and craftsmanship it simply because I am.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
My sense of scale is totally cockeyed. I was thinking it would be good to have a scale comparison on the bracket you made. I had it in my head that you did that on a bench vise. Then I see you pose it with a penny! Incredible! Could you maybe pose what you've got against the internationally accepted scale foil of a beer bottle? I still just can't believe this thing is small.
Incredible.
Lindsay
-
Wow.
+1 :o
-
you are a liar sir. this is 1/1 scale replica. i am making a joke of course. this is fantastic work. you have a great kit to start but you are taking it beyond the imagination of the designers. this will be a true museum quality model. congratulations on a job well done.
-
Another simple WOW!
RAGIII
-
Thanks gentlemen!
Engine aboard! Be quiet, dry fit only...
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/309243DSC0013.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=309243DSC0013.jpg)

(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/432393DSC0011.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=432393DSC0011.jpg)

Wow.

Amazing craftsmanship! That engine is gorgeous.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Hello Dan:
Truly amazing craftsmanship and detail. I am amazed at all the fabricating that you, the modeler, is required to do for such simple things as the cross members etc. I am watching this with interest. Do you plan on skinning any of it?
Best
Mark
-
Amazing Dan, just simply amazing, modeling at it's best.
Des.
-
Wow, this is incredible work here. It seems like something that will take years to build if you continue with the same level of excellance.
Chris
-
Hi Dan,
What can I add to that? Incredible build, terrific engine. And you are going also fast.
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Thanks guys!
To Mark, no skin anyway...
To Chris, I agree! Two years is for my buildings (vintage cars) a good average.
Today, spiderweb and a jig on the jig!

Just what I was looking for, Dan. Thanks very much!

I have to think of something new to say, but I can't. So:
Wow.
-
I have to think of something new to say, but I can't. So:
Wow.
If it is good enough for Bo it is good enough for me! WOW!
RAGIII
-
To Bo and RAGIII, don't worry, I understand... I'm an atypical modeler!
Well, today the fuselage frame is closed. Not complete of course but it's a step!
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/949829DSC0001.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=949829DSC0001.jpg)

Dan.
-
Looking brilliant Dan, always good to see the engine sitting in place even if it is only a dry fit.
Des.
-
Dan,
I don't know if I missed it, but are the kit pieces actual wood, or are they plastic?
Keep up the beautiful work. After seeing the price that these things go for on e-bay I think I'll just have to enjoy yours for the moment. :o
LT
-
Hello Dan. This is such an interesting build, thanks for sharing it with us. Adding the engine is really bringing things to life - metaphorically of course.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Amazing work, Dan! The fuselage frame is stunning.
I'm looking forward to more of this beautiful work.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Thanks guys!
To Lindsay, in fact the Hasegawa kit is an multi-media, but all the fuselage frame is in wood.
However, it's really poor and wrong. On the first inspection, I was stunned! At this time, I don't used one piece of the box! Except wood rods...
Well, today, color and somme small pieces, forgot by Hasegawa
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/642528DSC0009.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=642528DSC0009.jpg)

(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/569387DSC0011.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=569387DSC0011.jpg)
And as usual...
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/949748DSC0002.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=949748DSC0002.jpg)
A mill is really a great tool:

Dan.
-
Wow. Just beautiful.
-
Ok, if u guys excuse me... Wow!
-
I'm awestruck, Dan . . . what fine workmanship! I just joined the fine folks here, but I intend to study this build in great detail!
Mark
-
At this time, I don't used one piece of the box! Except wood rods...

Well, today, oil tank.
Nothing really very exciting. But...

To be honest, I can't say it was very easy.
Stamping first, home made tools, hours, sweat!
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/985371DSC0001.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=985371DSC0001.jpg)
By one piece, this is the real difficulty, but it's done:

Next, aboard...
Dan.

Exceptional work on the oil tank Dan, what material did you use to form the tank and the ends?
Des.
-
Very exciting for me. Beautiful work Dan.
-
Dan, Your work is just incredible! I wonder if you are just using the plans as a guide to scratch build an SE ??? ??
RAGIII
-
The oil tank is just super, Dan. Interesting how you
fashioned the ends. I'm looking forward to the next updates.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thanks gentlemen!
To Des, I used aluminum 0.4mm but thinner will be better... Annealed before of course!
Well, oil tank aboard, as promised...

Thanks guys, and OK, I'm going to tell the truth: I DO MY BEST!
But I'm really happy to your enjoyment... It's important for me.
Well, today sit down!
Seat supports, and of course the seat...

By the way, a question.
I'm talking to specialists...
The seat, what sort of for an early version?
This one, seen on replica:
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/675708SE5aMarch8.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=675708SE5aMarch8.jpg)

Thank you for your answers!
Dan.

Nobody to help me?
Dan.

Dan, Looking Better with each update which is almost impossible! As for the seat, the replica is correct for any war period SE and probably all of them. JMHO,
RAGIII
-
i have never seen a seat like the drawing in a se5a. only style like above. the seatbelt/harness is a late sutton type(post war) it should be the wider lap belts.this is fantastic work, i am enjoying watching it unfold.

As already stated, the replica has the correct style of seat for the SE.5a, I too have never seen the seat like in the cut-a-way drawing in an Se.5a.

In the midst of the pump cylinder, should be metal piston with leather seal ;D

UNBELIEVABLE! So much to see and get ideas from!!!!
RAGIII
-
this new photo you posted of an se5a with the different seat ,to me this seat was added after ww1. the seatbelt definately is post ww1. some se5a were used as trainers and even used by performers in the 1920s at an air show. these were fitted like your photo with later seatbelts and i assume the seat was made more comfortable. maybe the pump too. this i dont know for sure. one thing i must say you have excellent craftsmanship skills. very nice replica sir.

Brilliant work Dan, each post just keeps getting better and better, amazing workmanship.

It is really hard to write something original. This is fabulous!

Thanks guys!
To Jaceck, no rods in my engine too..

(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/309140DSC0017.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=309140DSC0017.jpg)
First step, easy...
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/573596DSC0001.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=573596DSC0001.jpg)
Two "hard" lips to accept some aggression:
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/989074DSC0003.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=989074DSC0003.jpg)
0,3mm brass sheet annealed, and then all shots are allowed!

You are welcome Lindsay!
Thank you very much, Dan. You're right, nothing fancy, but well set up nonetheless. I expected to see a door marked "Lockheed" given the work that goes on in there.
Keep turning out the incredible work!

Some of you must be wondering where is the logic in this WIP ...
There is one. I remind you that Mr. Hasegawa in the box " Museum Series" has shown only the outside ... No engine , no fuel tank, only drawn on a fine aluminum sheet (the skin). So I can not avail myself of the pieces provided.
A photo will be more explicit , a beautiful montage " OOB " on ScaleMotorcars by MOUPPE :
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/417389Capturedcran20131220173628.png) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=417389Capturedcran20131220173628.png)
So I have to adjust everything with my items ... The tank will be the base.
I hope I made myself understood ...
Dan.

Your work on this one continues to be beyond my comprehension! A True Work of Art! What a difference from the OOB kit!

I look forward to your updates Dan. Eye candy indeed! What are you using for references?
I have an uncovered WNW SE5a planned and I have taken some interior shots of the TVAL reproduction SE5a aircraft (with limited access as all panels were in place).
Don't want to hijack your thread so will only post a couple of images

Hi friends!
You do not know what to say, me neither! Thank you and thank you again ...
Remember, we are in the 1/8.
On the dashboard there is a magnificent piece: the compass.
An RAF, mine:
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/695922DSC0007.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=695922DSC0007.jpg)
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/134366DSC0008.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=134366DSC0008.jpg)
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/612866DSC0009.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=612866DSC0009.jpg)
It will come in the middle of course:
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/982973DSC0012.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=982973DSC0012.jpg)
Some parts:
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/788112DSC0003.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=788112DSC0003.jpg)
As usual again some technical. Body draft:
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/321812DSC0005.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=321812DSC0005.jpg)
Soldering jig:
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/312392DSC0002.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=312392DSC0002.jpg)
And now, how to cut a 8 mm pane? You have to take a lathe, and an independent four jaws chuck...
I know, I'm a lucky modeler...
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/875971DSC0005a.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=875971DSC0005a.jpg)
Have a nice WE!
Dan.
Bonne soirée à tous!

Hello Dan,

Dan,
Me too! (meaning I don't know what to say, other then magnificent work!) Keep the updates flowing, this is spectacular.

Amazing work, Dan. I have to remind myself that this is a scale model, not a full size replica.
Félicitations
Meilleurs vœux
Nigel
-
It all looks soo real... One might just wish to get inside, start the engine and... A real piece of modelling art!
-
I wish I was an SE5 expert so I could offer some help with the back panel wiring... Sadly I'm not. I hope someone can give you some clues. And also:
Wow.
-
Hello Dan,
I still can't believe this isn't a replica. This instrument panel is just amazing. It is perfection.
Kind regards
Patrick
P.S. In Belgium many people speak Dutch, French and English. I like the French language. I'am living not far from our common frontier.
-
Stunning! :o
VB
-
Seeing as how this is an older plane, I bet all of the wiring is knob and tube. You'll have to rip it out and pay an electrician exorbitant sums to bring it up to code. ;)
(Sorry, old house reno currently underway ;D)
And, oh yeah: double wow
-
As I have said before, just incredible. The instrument panel is as close to the real thing as anyone could get, brilliant work Dan.
Des.
-
:-X I'm just speechless...
About the back of the instrument panel, maybe you could write for help to the guys at TVAL. I'm sure you have already checked the pics of their replicas (just in case here is the link: http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/projects/se-5a-reproduction/se5a-walkaround (http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/projects/se-5a-reproduction/se5a-walkaround)) - If you show them what you are doing I'm sure they will be impressed as much as all of us and maybe they have some pics taken during the building of their replicas showing these eluding details.
-
Geez Dan, that is just crazy beautiful.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Hi gentlemen and thanks!
@Nigel: It's my ultimate goal! "Meilleurs voeux" too...
@Patrick: It's not a perfection! Pics lies...
@Beto: Good idea, I'm going to try it!

Dan.
-
Sincerely, I woul not call what you have done "using the Hasegawa pieces". You only used the wood provided in the kit to make your own - and of course much better - parts. Greetings again!!!!
-
Hi gentlemen!
Tail plane in progress:
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/553418DSC0001.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=553418DSC0001.jpg)
Immediately, it is clear that we will have somewhat refine it all ...
To the right the original part, tough!
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/123275DSC0003.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=123275DSC0003.jpg)
The butt joints are not really mechanical, I realize systematically
mid-wood assemblies:
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/458815DSC0005.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=458815DSC0005.jpg)
A trailing edge rather "tough" too:
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/415056DSC0006.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=415056DSC0006.jpg)
Once reworked, we arrive at an acceptable result:
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/959791DSC0007.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=959791DSC0007.jpg)
Aileron hinges are "home made" of course!
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/211813DSC0008.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=211813DSC0008.jpg)
As the rods besides, here is only the upper position:
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/714007DSC0009.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=714007DSC0009.jpg)
As you can see, this beautiful kit requires a little work ...
The next stage will be mounting these on the fuselage and wiring.
Some sport, finally!
Dan.
-
Excellent reworking of the tail plane Dan, and the fuselage stringers look great.

Hello Dan:
Just catching up a bit here. It is neat to see modeling at this level. It is really a throw back to modeling in the early days when plans and raw materials were all that were in the box. This is turning out really nice and displays your outstanding workmanship and attention to detail.
Best

Thank you Bo and Mark!

Beautiful work on the leather Dan, and the tail skid looks amazing.
Des.

Dan, I'm lost in admiration for this work. What will you do with the model when you finish it? Do you have display area large enough? What do you have lined up next?
Best wishes
Nigel

Hi gentlemen!
Thanks Des, kind words from a specialist, you know...
To Nigel, I plan to instal this bird on a wall! The best way for me. What next?
A vintage french motorbike, a Terrot 350 or 500 in 1/5, fully scratch built, as my Talbot (1/8 scale).
Well, today plywood:

What kind of plywood did you use for the
turtleneck turtledeck? It looks very good in scale.
LT
edit: Curse you, autocorrect!

Hi gentlemen!
To Lindsay, 0,4 mm plywood, really a pleasure to work with...
Today, turtleneck_thanks LT..._ closed. An some leather, again:

are you going to cover all the work up with fabric or just leave it open?
-
The metal panel and ply covering is SPECTACULAR!
RAGIII
-
This is just remarkable Dan. I'm lost in admiration.
Given that the real thing from tip to tail was what, 21ft long (?) and the model is in 1/8 scale, would I be right in thinking that what we're marvelling at here is only about two feet long?
Best wishes

I suppose the Aldis sight works...
beautiful!
I am sure of it!
Absolute top class modelling. I wonder if you are going to use linen to cover the fuselage sides and the wings later...
-
Hi gentlemen!
Really Bo, what a question! Of course! But in fact I could not settle it, the LEWIS is not aboard!
We need wings for that may be...
Lower one first step:

So glad to see you back on this one, Dan. Truly phenomenal work. I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to use your build log as my primary reference when I build my 1/48 scale Roden kit. :-[
Cheers,
Bud
-
Hi Dan
Have watched your build on another site and I find you are one exceptional modeler, your skills are just brilliant, I too build like you but not to your standard.
Best regards
Richard

Thank you friends !
These words remain as pleasant and appreciated!
To Bud, be carefull! I'm not 100% accurate...
A very good source:

To Richard, thank you very much for your kind words, but, but...
You are for me the best scratch builder I ever seen!
To all, you must see this:

Well, before attacking the wings , I am committed to achieving the junctions.
This evening, the roof of the " cabane "...
A French word, but we must remember that we have been pioneers in aviation !
Of course , I use parts Hasegawa I torture a little, you'll see.
Here amputation of the front, the emergency tank will of course be made of metal :

Thanks guys!
To Ernie, more...
We were talking about the wings is not it ? Here we go!
First operation, a new workshop in the workshop(!) , because I decided to build
simultaneously the port and starboard (lower) wings I had to create space :
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/534968DSC0001.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=534968DSC0001.jpg)
It is clear that there Hasegawa parts will be used ! Besides the fact that all
chopsticks to good sampling in principle there _ knowingly box I bought was not new_ all pre- cut pieces are there.
Style those little spacers, pre-cut but not hollowed !
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/169301DSC0005.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=169301DSC0005.jpg)
Whithout a mill, God help you!
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/628109DSC0004.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=628109DSC0004.jpg)
It remains for me to cut the side curve ... Imagine cutter attack !
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/286597DSC0009.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=286597DSC0009.jpg)
Has yet to clean the low slot, a walk, in fact 27 walks
per wing . A bi-plane ? Four wings if I'm not mistaken ...
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/397869DSC0010.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=397869DSC0010.jpg)
Unfinished , the lower wings

Consistently brilliant work Dan, the wings look superb as does the rest of the model, the work of a true craftsman.
Des.
-
Oh dear me... Mighty impressive.
It will roar the engine, fly, spill the oil, shoot the Vickers, won't it?
-
A very good work.
Martin
-
Beautiful work, Dan. Not much else to say. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
What a beautiful build this is!
Alan
-
Hello my friends and thank you for your support.
It is far from useless !
The assembly of these wings is not really difficult but tedious,
terribly tedious ...
Oh dear me... Mighty impressive.
It will roar the engine, fly, spill the oil, shoot the Vickers, won't it?
May be in another world...
So far only one wing is actually complete, low starboard wing .
In fact, Mr Hasegawa, teasing as always, partially put me in the lake.
In the foreground , the wing completed :
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/820143DSC0001.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=820143DSC0001.jpg)
It sounds trivial, but I had to take off a lot of frames ...
For those who do not see the changes , here near the yellow arrows , top and bottom:
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/364146Capturedcran20140322173201.png) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=364146Capturedcran20140322173201.png)
A wing of a Se 5a, a true one, in restoration :
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/4356101457.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=4356101457.jpg)
Together , I still work on the upper wings ...

(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/294398DSC0006.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=294398DSC0006.jpg)
Have a nice WE!

As a testament to your work, had you said the real wing restoration was yours I would not have known the difference!

Thank you RAGIII! And thank you all for your visits ...

(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/985752DSC0004.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=985752DSC0004.jpg)

a lot of things to add to the cell ...

Thank you very much gentlemen!
Tonight, this bird is on his feet . You can see that my
" Photo Studio " is found a little cramped :

(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/903443DSC0002.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=903443DSC0002.jpg)
The brass parts , you will be surprised , Hasegawa parts !
Changed, but ...
However, the legs , are " home made " , I imagine you will do the
difference :
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/308191DSC0001.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=308191DSC0001.jpg)
The pace of work , already slowed , will slow further , I must indeed take care
my boat, 1/1 scale ...
Good evening everyone !
-
Good work and nice to see.
Martin
-
Excellent work fabricating the undercarriage legs, just like the real thing.
Des.
-
Hi gentlemen!
Thank you very much Des, it's my goal...
You were warned ... I spent little time in my workshop . The little time spent in the workshop, I dedicated to testing. Since I realize spoked wheels for automobiles, and for this aircraft it will take two, in my dream is to get to "roll" rims and forget brass machining on the lathe.
Many unsuccessful attempts, different techniques equally unsuccessful but finally I see the end of the tunnel .
I think to get better, but for now here is the result :
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/789183DSC0001.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=789183DSC0001.jpg)
All this is far from perfect ...

Very nice indeed Dan.
Interesting to see how you've gone about making the rims. Was it particularly difficult to keep them round?
Alan
-
An very good approach to manufacturing the rims Dan, they look pretty good from where I sit. What are you going to use for the spokes?
Des.
-
Thank you gentlemen!
To Des, 0,6mm brass wire an eyelets, wait and see...
To Alan, it's not really easy but by movements back and forth , I strength the half-rim to take the form :

Drilling on the divider plate (EMCO), only 72 spoke per rim...

Great work Dan I've been very busy doing the exact same thing the last few weeks now , currently making wheel sets for the big 1/8th scale Monogram E Type.
Love the Idea of rolling the rims rather than machining them, it's a process I'm yet to try. Cheers

Thank you friends , your enthusiasm is really nice to me ...
A rim is finished:

Naturally, a hub is needed. 72 small holes of 0.7 mm ...
The spokes them are 0.6 mm in diameter.

The first spokes , placed on the jig, that I forgot to photograph in
whole. This will be done at the completion of the second rim .

Thank you friends !
Maybe some explanations are necessary ...
First, the jig as a whole :
(http://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/231010DSC0007.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=231010DSC0007.jpg)
The many and varied wedges are used to guide :
[/ url]
And the mystery ... Open rivets simply that they lodge in
gorges of the rim, previously rejected one by one !
[url=http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=467634DSC0010.jpg](http://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/467634DSC0010.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=969658DSC0008.jpg)
Once the first row is complete, I removed the holds and moves to the second !
The spoke arrangement is here particularly simple.
(http://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/324731DSC0011.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=324731DSC0011.jpg)
For the second row , note that the spokes should be slightly bent , given the very large offset :
(http://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/524595DSC0012.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=524595DSC0012.jpg)
No, I grant you all this is not very easy! But when the result is here ...
Thanks for looking...
Dan.

Hi gents and thanks!
To Alain: I'm a very lucky modeler... Lathe, mill and so one in my
workshop.

Just went through the whole building blog.....speechles...the fine art of scratch building...!!! Chapeau mon ami...

Your workmanship and skills are simply amazing... :o

Good evening friends and thank you for your visits and comments ...
The cabane, following rather late!
This structure must "live" alone. There was a lot of angles in all this:
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/919496DSC0001.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=919496DSC0001.jpg)
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/131962DSC0003.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=131962DSC0003.jpg)
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/326625DSC0005.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=326625DSC0005.jpg)
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/622331DSC0006.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=622331DSC0006.jpg)
The front and rear supports welded on site, thanks to a wonderful tool,
a resistance welding station, expensive but really ideal for delicate welds,
with minimal heat propagation.
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/151442Capturedcran20141205192506.png) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=151442Capturedcran20141205192506.png)
These sleeves have been really welded in situ, impossible to achieve with the flame of course, and for
me at least, iron ...
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/940327DSC0007.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=940327DSC0007.jpg)
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/592654DSC0010.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=592654DSC0010.jpg)
All remaining naturally demountable as a real plane, but for me it will greatly facilitate
the steps!
Thanks for looking, Dan.
-
What to say? :o GOBSMACKED!
RAGIII

Thank you for your very great build. I will watch to all updates.

Hello to all,
Each time, I see your work, I want to cry...Seriously, your work is beyond model making border. Just awesome !

Well, safety tank more, but not completed ...

Part One...
Thanks guys!
For those who doubt the presence of logic in the latest advances,
rest assured, there's one: I'm trying to complete all that is around the cabane.
Security tank done, let's go for the mechanism up / down
of the Lewis gun ...
Here are the first steps:

Hazegawa, not so bad anyway:

-
Dan your build is very fantastic. ;D
Martin
-
This is amazing! Are you leaving it as an open frame, or will it all eventually be covered? I'm just thinking that if it is all covered up it would be a shame to hide all this superb work.
-
I can't believe I missed so much of this, Dan! You've made remarkable progress since I last checked in. She is absolutely stunning now, as she sits. She will be a true museum piece when she's finished.
Cheers,
Bud
-
With the massive size of this model you will need to fit a wide angle lens to your camera :) seriously though, this is a true masterpiece and deserving of all the praise that has been given.
Des.
-
Dan,
It seems I have somehow missed some major work ! This is such an outstanding piece of work that I really can't think of what to say! Brilliant falls short!!!
RAGIII
-
I have a Wingnut SE in my stash, and when the Build starts I'll be referring to this Thread at great length. This is an absolute classic of a project, the detail is incredible! Other then being a bit small to climb in to I don't think it could be any closer to the original, simply magnificent!
Cheers,

Well gentlemen, thank you very much for your support, your kindness.
It was my tribute to WWI.
Now I come back to my first love, french vintage cars.
Have all fun with wonderful WWI birds...
Thank you again!

One of the MOST OUTSTANDING builds I have ever followed! Thank You for sharing your skills with us! I think I stated earlier that Your build will be a reference for anyone building an SE5a! Just STUNNING!

Just simply staggering....I can't help thinking your model would not look out of place standing next to a real Se5a. Everyone would
then see just what goes into the real deal and be just as mind-boggled about what an extraordinary effort it took to build your bird.

All good things must come to an end I suppose. I have tremendously enjoyed following your incredible progress on this from start to finish, and have gained a lot from the experience. As Rick has said, this build will be a wonderful reference for a lot of us on SE5a Builds but no one will come close to your impeccable talents and standards. I sincerely hope that you will do another aircraft in future, and feature it here. Thank you so much for sharing this magnificent project here with us, and enjoy those vintage autos too!
Cheers,
Lance

Honestly this is the first time I saw this thread, I think someone will have to invent some new adjectives because I can't think of any that would do this justice. My mouth is agape.....speechless

First off Dan, let me convey my sincere thanks to you for posting your incredible build of this awesome model on my forum, it has bought hours of joy and amazement to the forum members, we have all gained invaluable skills from your build tutorial.
Secondly, congratulations on completing this immaculate build of a 1:8 scale SE5a, you have shown to us through your expertise and your extremely talented hands what is possible when building in miniature, this model is as close to the real thing as it could possibly get.
I hope in the future that you plan on making another scale WW1 aircraft model and if so I invite you to be part of this forum again by posting your build log here.

Dan, your efforts are stunning. I can't add much to what has
already been said, except you are completely deserving of all
praise for your sublime SE 5a. Thank you for sharing this gem! :D
Cheers,

This is a work of art, I can only hope that one day I can come near to this skill level

Hi Dan,
I have never seen anyone take one of the 1/8 Hasegawa kits that in them self's are very beautiful to begin with and make something even far better out of them, this model deserves a spot somewhere in a Museum that's my opinion.
You! are a artist Dan.

Hello there,
this is another of those build logs that will be visited(at least by me) many more times in the future... It is just too beautiful to see it only once :)
I guess all I have to do now is send begging message to Hasegawa for re-release and buy new garage and then just hope for "some" results...
Just wow!!!

Thought I would bump this topic back to the top of the list, it is an incredible build done by a master modeler, it is a long build but worthy of your attention, this will be of great interest to any new members who have not seen this build.

Thank you for giving this magnificent build a boost, Des! It is truly spectacular in every sense of the word!

Thank you very much Des and Bud, greetings from France. Dan.

Amazing and awe inspiring build. Truly "Museum Quality" in your hands.

I used this build for reference many times while working on my recent SE5a from WNW. If only I had the skills to duplicate this in 1/32nd....
