Title: Where to buy very narrow masking tape?
Post by: compressor man on September 29, 2013, 11:00:39 PM
I am unable to find any of the very narrow masking tape that people use on biplane wings to mask the rib tapes. I am wanting something in the range of 1mm or so. The only place I have found it (I am in the US) is Spruebrothers and they seem to be perpetually out of stock. Where do you guys buy this elusive stuff?

Hi Chris,

I'm also in the USA, but I've had some success ordering from Jammydog in the UK (http://www.jammydog.com/index.htm); I also bought some micron masking tape from HLJ (http://www.hlj.com/product/AIZ00016), but the shipping, etc. made that a rather more pricey option.

I use these masking tape. Personally, cut myself it into strips that I need.

I had considered cutting my own also but did not know if it were possible to get a consistent width on such a very narrow tape. Would you mind sharing how you do this?

Along a different line, I use Pactra pin striping tape for RC models. Comes on a roll with about 6 different widths the narrowest 2 suitable for rib tapes. I think this is available from Tower Hobbies and perhaps squadron.

I also use the Jammydog masking tape, I have a good range of their tape all at a different width, it's good quality tape and reasonably priced.

One method is to glue a pair of safety razor blades together (CA or epoxy work).

What a fantastic idea! one could conceivably cut a couple strips at once with this method. Great idea!!

sorry, I'm a little late...

here the link of the online shop where I find the narrow tape I use, in several measures:

http://www.essebiemme.net/CATALOGO_2013-_DETTAGLIO.pdf

albight not cheap, I find it very useful, being enough sticky to be reused 2/3 times on different spots of a model, but not enough to marry or scrap away the paint underneath.
i.e. I used quite a lot of it on the ribs of my D.III without any trouble..

cheers, p.

I marked out mine and cut it with a straightedge. I really like Bos' idea though.

you can try an artists supply store locally. this is where i get mine. they have 1/8", 1/16" and 1/32" available the 1/32" is like .7 mm i think. i live in the new orleans area and i get it a david art supply but they also have it at dixie so i assume this is something that most fine art supply stores carry. find out where locals go to get oil paints and canvas supplies and you ought to be able to find some there.

Albatros,
I had not thought to look at an artist supply store. The tape that you bought there, was it masking tape or some other type of tape? I guess anything would work as long as it was not very tacky and did not leave residue behind.

I sometimes get micro mask from http://www.little-cars.co.uk/toolsacc.htm (http://www.little-cars.co.uk/toolsacc.htm) (look on detailing and materials).  This looks like the same stuff as jammydog.  I get my EZ Line for rigging there too.

They don't always have stock, but worth asking.  Also the tape weighs bugger all so I guess shipping to the US won't be too much?

The latest issue of Windsock (29/5) reviews some micron masking tape produced by Aiza and available from Creative Models in Australia (www.creativemodels.co.au).

It's described as a range of fine-width, pliable masking tapes on reels, and the sample reviewed is 1.00mm wide.

Best wishes

it was artist grade masking tape. made for masking on any or all types of art projects and is low tack, which makes it work great. kinda expensive if i remember right(maybe $5 to $6) although its a year later plus and i have some left on all 3 rolls i bought.

Go to some graphic shop and ask them to cut masking tape (I use Hansa Selfadhesive Airbrush Masking Film) on plotter for you, they can  make any width.

I bought a few rools of the tape from JammyDog, and it works very well.  The other day, I was in Hobby Lobby and found some 1 mm tape in the drafting section.  If you are in the US, give them a look.  I have not tried that tape yet, so I can't vouch for it, but once I do I'll give a report.

I just used my vinyl cutter to cut a rectangle out of masking film full of 1mm wide x 130mm long strips - came out beautifully. I will post up a picture tomorrow.
I will be offering these for sale in the near future.  A bespoke service will also be available should modellers require different size widths and lengths.
 ;)
Cheers,
Bob

What a bloody good idea Bob, I can see a pretty good market for those especially in all different widths, roughly how many 1.0mm strips are on each card?

Hi Des,
Thanks for the encouraging words  ;)
I counted just shy of 100 strips of tape.

The plus points about this masking film being that it is see-through and very kind to paint... and can be repositioned many times.

I will work out the cost in the coming days, but rest assured it will be a competitive price point  ;)

Cheers,

If anyone is interested I will be selling single sheets of 100 x 1mm x 135mm masking strips for £2.50 per sheet + whatever the shipping cost is to your door. I would think the shipping would be no more than £2 to £3 worldwide via standard airmail.

Need wider than 1mm? No worries! Bob can do it!  :D

I'm waiting for some masking film to arrive, but please let me know if you're interested.

Cheers,

I'd be interested Mr Buckles :)

Will you be doing other sizes too, such as 0.5mm?  What is the material you use, is it suitable only for masking or would it work well enough as a modelling medium in its own right, for rib tapes or manifold wrapping etc?

Thank you :)
Title: Re: Where to buy very narrow masking tape?
Post by: bobs_buckles on November 08, 2013, 07:29:00 PM
Hi Ian,
I'm unsure whether this particular masking material (thin semi clear flexible vinyl) would be suitable for rib tapes or manifold wrapping, but see no reason why it cannot be given a shot  ;)

I think my machine can handle 0.5 but need to run a test before committing to said statement.
If successful I will post a picture up on here to illustrate my delight!

Cheers,

Bob

Looks great!

I use thin masking tape on 1:32 props to mark out the laminations, by eye.  takes a while but looking edge on and making the strips look parallel, works eventually!

Will be interested to see if/when these become available commercially :)

Hi Bob,

Here are your strips in use.  I used the 0.5 mm strips (with some liqiud mask) to mask up for the laminations on my WNW Albie prop.

The strips go on easily, and have enough tack to stay in place yet are easily removed.  I didn't have as much of a problem as with micromask tape with sweaty fingers, and I found I could use each strip around 3 times.  The edges are reasonably sharp - any imperfections on my prop are a result of my inaccurate laying out of the strips, not the strips themselves.  I would like to try the strips to mask out an edge on a complex curve surface, such as a prop spinner or fuselage bands etc.

All good so far Bob...

Hi Ian,
Thanks for taking the time to show us one use of the strips - there be many, many more me thinks  :D

I find them handy for bracing delicate masks - like this DH.2 sawtooth mask I made for a mate of mine.

Happy masking!

I have a product called micromesh Bob.  It works OK but has quite rough edges, works fine for pipe lagging but not so good for prop laminations. Your edges are fine enough for that application :)
