Title: Friedrichshafen FF49B (Top Gun, 1/72)
Post by: PrzemoL on September 25, 2013, 07:53:28 AM
I have just started work on this model:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.345245385595042.80400.334545143331733&type=3
which I will try to build as a replica of a flag-ship of the first Polish Naval Squadron based in 1920 in Puck on Baltic Sea. This only FF49 in Polish markings is seen here second from right:

My very optimistic first-sight opinion on this TopGun kit expressed in the What's New section proved quite wrong. In fact the kit requires a lot of substantial work to bring it to a reasonable quality and accuracy. Unfortunately, there are a lot of discrepancies from the scale drawings included in the kit instructions (absolutely hard to understand for me!!!).
The wings required corrections in the aileron outline, strut location points and the shape of root cut-outs.

Left lower wing, upper side

Pencil circles depict the original strut locations, the crosses point out where I drilled the sockets in the correct position. Dark lines are the original aileron outlines, already filled with liquid CA glue, while the bright ones are the rescribed correct ones

Right lower wing, upper side

Left upper wing, upper side

Right upper wing, under side

Here I still have to trace the location for strut sockets, for a moment only the wing spars are marked.

The fuselage is quite right in the outline, only some two milimeter sections at the rear had to be cut off. However, there was no location for the lower wings. I have traced the points where the spars would enter the fuselage - with respect to the datum line, again using the scale drawings from the kit instruction.

The interior sides have the internal structure moulded but only the longerons were at the acceptable locations. The vertical struts and cross members had to be removed.

And the floats... The steps had to be moved back by 3.5 and 4.5 mm, respectively. The rear bottom section had to be lovered by some 2mm and the very front parts lenghtened and sharpened in the side view. I have used Magic Sculp to do these.

While sanding various surfaces numerous air bubbles inevitably emerged, especially on the upper wing under sides and the float sides.
Well, in a summary of this first build report I will only say: what a difference WNW kits make!

And who doesn't like some work to get them in the proper shape... lot's of fun hey? ::)

It does remind me my Ni11 from Toko... trouble everywhere! I mean... fun!

Nice model choice Prezmol. I'll keep eyes in it with pleasure.

That's a very interesting looking aircraft, Przemol.  There's so many flying boats that were used in WWI that I'd never heard of.

I'll be watching this build with interest.

Cheers.

You certainly have an appetite for tough subjects, Przemo.  I have no concerns that you
won't end up with a spectacular model when done.  It really is a very interesting choice.
I look forward to your updates.

Thank you, everybody. Your kind words make it easier to overcome problems with this build.

I declare the fuselage interior completed. It is a SF story, since there are no photos of FF49 interior I would be aware of. So I tried to invent a possible solution with a pilot seat on the main fuel tank on the wooden floor (kit parts), folding observer's seat on the rear bulkhead (scratch), a fire wall (scratch), a fuel pump (scratch), throttle control (spare PE), seat belts (spare PE), steering column and the dashboard (kit parts). The sides of the interior structure were recreated using Evergreen profiles and fishing line for rigging.

To justify my lack of professional attitude and invention of SF FF49 interior I will only say that very little will be visible. The closed fuselage looks like this:

Great job on the interior, Przemo.  Even if it is from your imagination, it is well
thought out and totally believable. Very nicely done!  I'm looking forward to the
next phase of your project.  By the way, your wood tones as usual are first-rate.

The interior it's looking good Prezmol, with a very nice wood effect.

Sometimes it's hard to keep on going without references, but imo you did great.

Given the lack of references, Prez, that is an extraordinarily brilliant cockpit, especially in 1/72 scale.  Up to your usual standards, mate.

Thanks, gents. I am glad you like my FF49.
So here is more. I have built my traditional cardboard jig to attach the lower wings keeping the geometry from the scale drawings. I have also attached all the tail pieces except for the rudder.

The joints will still require some sanding, they are now filled with CA glue.

I have also started working on float attachment struts. First I prepared the scale projections on a sheet of paper using measurements from the scale drawings.
The inverted V ones between the floats and the wings were built from resin parts from the kit. The M-ones between the floats and the fuselage have too short legs.

I decided to scratch build them in pieces - the central V's are now being built from Contrail profiles and the remaining single legs will come soon, separately.

Fantastic work on the interior Przemo, it sure looks very feasible to me, it is a real pity that most of your excellent detail work disappears once the fuselage is closed up. Working in 1:72 scale is a challenge at the best of times but your ingenuity to overcome the lack of reference material is outstanding.

Thank you gents, for your kind words.

Well, this project is going to be even more lengthy, than I thought some time ago. I have already built the float struts to the floats but then, when trying to dry fit them to the wings I came to the conclusion, that everything was so badly aligned, that there was no way to have the floats in proper geometry. After a brief analysis I decided, that the floats themselves were completely unfit, with wrong geometry and what was worse - unequal! I decided, there was no way to save the upper side surface detail, I scraped the upper surfaces flat, so I did with the lower surface, then with the help of caliper achieved that they got identical, rectangular in the cross section and giving hope to have them aligned correctly. The holes for the struts came out to be wrongly placed, too. I have scribed five parallel lines on the upper sides, added the caps made from some spare PE elements and now I am filling those wrongly placed strut holes with CA glue as a putty. And I just wonder what surprises await me with the upper wing...
Here are the guilty ones:

In the meantime, to cure the frustration of wasted time, I have painted, decalled and shaded the fuselage. The upper side of the lower wings will get the shading only when the floats rigging is done and the holes in the wings (4 per wing) are filled.

Being a navy aircraft, the FF49 is marked with a navy flag instead of usual checkerboard on the fuselage.

Thanks, Rick and Des.

The works are going on. I have painted and weathered the floats (this will be visible in some photos later). Then the inverted V struts were attached to them, what allowed me to dry-fit them to the wings. It seems, that the floats geometry is finally satisfying. However the struts that join the floats sides to the fuselage point just at the root of the wings leading edge are too short. I will have to make new ones, some 2 mm longer.
Well, it is defnitely not a WNW kit. You may now easily guess what brand will be my next model  ;)

There is no way to lengthen the existing ones, the angle between the legs is wrong. I will have to make a new pair. So it will take some time, three stages, at least. But this is our hobby, isn't it?

1/32 Omega?  ;D

In sure the kit is a pig, but you're making it look easy!

It's going to be a beautiful model of a very interesting subject. That's the only drawback to Wingnuts - the competition table at Telford was awash with Wingnuts and not much else..

Keep up the good work!

Thank you, everybody for your kind words.

The production of new V-s went quicker than I thought. And the old ones did not go to the waste bin - I have cut them in twos and made of them the remaining legs. The rigging was also going smooth. The lines between the floats were done with a help of four Bob's eyelets. The remaining ones went through the wing, the holes were then filled with the paint pigment and then sanded flush. The holes for interplane rigging were drilled, the wing upper side airbrushed with the blue-grey and now it is ready for shading. I cannot contain myself with the joy, that I have overcome this stage. I almost feel, the struts and upper wing will go easily (am I too optimistic???)

Thank you, everybody. Your kind words are indeed an encouragement I need more and more to complete this build. It is going sooo slow but luckily, all the time forward. Recently I have completed the shading of the upper sides of lower wings, prepared the upper wing to the assembly and finally got to the interplane struts. Right now the four outermost ones are glued and the glue is setting. To get them in proper geometry I have put the model back to the jig which had to be trimmed at some spots to accomodate for the floats. Then I set them in a proper layout and fixed temporarily using Patafix. When I got sure, they were right, I removed one at a time and glued with plastic glue controlling its position with respect to the other ones. When I got it right, I added a drop or two of liquid CA glue to fix it steadily. The front ones went first, one after another, then the rear ones. Tommorow I may dare to continue, probably with the innermost ones. The mid span and the cabane ones will go there only with the top wing sitting on. At least such is the plan...
PS. All the struts got the pins attached at their tips beore any assembly started. You may just see them on the top ends in the shots.

Superb work, PrzemoL!  The paint and decals are beautifully done. I really
like the idea for holding the struts in place.  Simple but effective.  Good tip
to remember.  Keep up the good work my friend, you have a winner there.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thank you again for your kind supporting words, gentlemen.
Actually it is only tonight that I started to believe I may indeed complete this build. Finally, the top wing and all the struts are mounted, except for 4 inclined ones between the fuselage and lower wing in the inner wing bays and two upper aileron actuators.
I have started with the top wing, then (on the next day) I have trimmed and attached six cabane struts. They had a serious task to do - the top wing was moved by about 1 mm to the side. I have added a block to my jig which moved the wing back to the correct position and then built the cabane. When the CA glue set the geometry was correct. Then the fun begin with trimming, trying, trimming, trying, etc. of the remaining 8 interplane struts. This was going fine until the very last one. I do not know if I was already tired, my hand was shaking, the eyesight getting blurred. I spend a good half an hour trying to check if the strut had correct length. When I succeeded with this part after numerous tries, then it took three attempts to attach it (all the previous ones went on smoothly, each on the first run!). But finally it was there. Then I found, that during the model handling with that last damned strut, one of the float-lower wing lines got loose - one more thing to repair.  >:( But finally I got it all right! I am overjoyed, so please forgive me this longish complaining report.

Thank you, gents!
Rigging this beast was easier and quicker than I thought. Just one evening and the lines were tight and fixed. Filling the 36 holes with paint and sanding flush was not so. It is still not fully completed, especially the red zones still need my attention. But it is so close to the end, now...

Thank you everybody. I am glad you like my FF49.

IanB - I use black elastic thread from worn stockings to rig 72nd scale models. Very flexible and forgiving material.

Pepperman and RAG - it was really one evening, some two hours or so. When I said it was easier than I though I meant, I had almost no problems, the CA glue was holding the lines at the first try, no need to repeat threading, cut too loose lines, etc. This does not happen always so. This time those 38 lines were very kind as if they wanted to pay back for the problems I had earlier with this build.

A few steps forward:

The upper wing prepared for shading

Usually I do not make bases for my models. But the floatplanes look unnatural without a beaching gear and that in turn is hard to assemble without a base. So I have prepared one using a custom made wooden frame and Polak base - meadow type. I will add a small plate with the aircraft name and affiliation, too.

I think you are right Przemo - the seaplane should be presented with at least some carts. I feel like building one of the seaplanes I have in my stash... thanks to your thread mate!

Thank you, again.

Ssasho0, the landing gear is from Choroszy. They have a couple of FF33 kits and are eager to sell kit parts separately. So I bought a set from FF33 and it fits FF49 quite well.

And the best news for today is, that I finally finished this build. My absolute record - over three months spent with one model on my bench! It was not a piece of cake, not just that it was a resin kit. But the more glad I am now, to have it completed at last! One shot here, more in Completed Models section.

Congratulations on the absolutely stunning build Prez, I must add that the base really adds to the model!
You mentioned Choroszy, is this the "Choroszy model Bud" resin kitmakers? I'm considering one of their 1:72 taubes and what is your opinion on their kits? Should I pull the trigger or better save my money as they are quite costly? I think a 1:72 taube with the shipping will cost me a little less than a WnW kit :-/

Sasho

Yes, I mean Choroszy Modelbud. I would say Choroszy kits are average quality resin kits. Ardpol and Karaya are much better. I have build two Macchi M.5s, Lohner S.30, Sopwith Dolphin and used the upper wing from Aviatik D.II from Choroszy line. You may check them in my website:
http://www.ikb.poznan.pl/przemyslaw.litewka/modele.html
By no means are they a shake-and-bake business. But with a bit of resolution and good will they can be built into very decent replicas. I do not know their Taube, however I am afraid that resin version of those famous feather-like wings with ribs very much visible, maybe on the lower side - it is hard to keep them uniform, nicely spaced and straight. I will say like this: if you really want to build a Taube then, in the view of lacking injection moulded kits - go and get it.

Thanks again Prez, I will check your site and I'm sure I will find a lot of interesting things there. I think I will wait to see if in WnW will not surpirse us with an early war aircraft this year - a taube for example :) and if not I will get a 1:72 version from them

Sasho
