It having been far too long since I did anything here, it's time to share a build with the good folk herein. This is Eduard's Nie. 11 being built for a group build over on Aeroscale.
Are we seated comfortably? Then I'll begin.
-
Et voilĂ , here is the Eduard 1/48 Nieuport 11. This is a lovely kit and ought to present no problems for a fast assembly.

-
I've got the interior wood grain done.
The seat's drilled out and awaiting a Milliput seat cushion once the oil paint is dry
(http://www.aeroscale.co.uk/photos/feature/4206/onze_4.jpg)
And the plywood grain is on the interior side walls and floor
(http://www.aeroscale.co.uk/photos/feature/4206/onze_3.jpg)
-
Now that the oil paint has dried I can get a little more work done. I've sculpted a Milliput seat cushion, assembled the engine, and outlined the fuselage members with slivers of brown painted decal trim film.
I didn't bother with a picture, but I've got blue-grey paint on all the metal bits which will live in the cockpit.
-
A nice dark wash makes the details pop.
(Okay, I cheated a bit in this series of posts. I actually started work on this kit two weeks ago, but since watching paint dry for two weeks is actually quite boring, I've compressed the timeline a bit. Too bad that we're all caught up now and I can't do that anymore.)
-
I haven't seen this one built before. Thanks for sharing.
Lindsay
-
Good choice, Jessie. The bebe is a great little aeroplane. As with Lindsay, I haven't seen
it built before...about time, so thank you for bringing it to us. Great start. I'll be looking
for more updates.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
It's good to see you back here, Jessie! Great start on an excellent kit. I built this one about a year ago and enjoyed it so much, I bought two more (well, actually one is a Nie.16). I look forward to watching yours come together.
Cheers,
Bud

Here's an interesting camouflage question. From the two photos someone on another forum pointed out (http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escadrille/escadrille026.htm), there seems to be something of a mystery about the edge taping on the flying surfaces. The photo taken from behind the aircraft (http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escadrille/Photos2/026_N11_1135.jpg) clearly shows that the edge taping was much lighter than the upper surface colours yet the one taken from ahead (http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escadrille/Photos2/026_N11_1135_2.jpg) shows just as clearly that they're darker than the undersurface fabric, which has been established as clear doped linen.
What colour is darker than clear doped linen yet lighter than green and khaki camouflage?

weellll, not taking into account the effect of ortho film, here's a simple experiment that shows it could be a medium shade...

That's what I've been thinking. I'm probably going to go with something like Tamiya's Buff, which is toward the bottom range of your smaller square.
-
Looking forward to watching your excellent work Jessie. I am sure I have one of these in the to do cupboard and seeing this you have helped narrow down my decision as what to do next :).
-
I made major progress today. Here's the cockpit looking busy. The only aftermarket parts are a set of Eduard French seat belts and the aforementioned Milliput seat cushion. Everything else is straight out of the box
(http://www.aeroscale.co.uk/photos/feature/4206/onze_8.jpg)
I added that little shelf behind the seat to block the view of the fuselage seam.
Nothing much happening inside the left fuselage half
(http://www.aeroscale.co.uk/photos/feature/4206/onze_10.jpg)
Ready to close up
(http://www.aeroscale.co.uk/photos/feature/4206/onze_11.jpg)
A little glue, lower wings and tailplanes later and we have an airplane happening!

-
Good job on the build, Jessie. Looking forward to the next update.
Thanks for sharing with us.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
That's coming along nicely, Jessie. Will you be doing the box-top scheme?
Welcome back.
Dal.
-
Yes. It was a difficult choice, but it's the more colourful so it won out in the end :)
-
The little Nieuport is coming along beautifully Jessie, it's great to see a build of this lovely aeroplane on the forum, looking forward to your next updates.
Des.
-
Nice work. I just bought one of these kits on Ebay. I'll be following your project as kind of a build review.
-
Hi Jessie. Nice Ni you're building there.
I enjoy Ni's very much... don't know why.
Cheers

Primer on the upper sides

-
Jessie,
Sorry about the late comment, I actually though I had done so earlier :-[ Your interior came out nicely and you are certainly making great progress! I am looking forward to seeing more!

Jessie,
Looking great as always, a subject that never loses it's interest. Nice to see you here, I'll be following your "Noop" closely.
Cheers,
Lance :)

A wee bit more done
(http://www.aeroscale.co.uk/photos/feature/4206/onze_14.jpg)
The paint is pooling between the ribs; I guess I made it a trifle too thin. I'll have to give the model a rub down with a scotchbrite pad and then a gentle repaint.
-
What primer did you use and how well does a scotchbrite pad smooth paint?
-
I used Badger Modelflex grey primer, then painted with Tamiya deck tan. I think that I may have over-thinned the deck tan a trifle. Scotchbrite pads smooth down chalky paint deposits without the harshness of sanding. I think that's all I'll need.
-
It all looks really good. Keep up the good work!
-
Good progress, Jessie. Thanks for the tip about the Scotchbrite. That
can be useful.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Polished down and repainted. Now it looks much better
(http://www.aeroscale.co.uk/photos/feature/4206/onze_15.jpg)
-
Looking really good Jessie, thanks for the tip on the Scotchbrite pads.
Des.

My attempt at freehanding the camouflage could have gone better. Next I try masking...

-
The green is looking much better. Now I need to touch up the brown.
-
Your 2nd try definitely looks better. Masking camo is a pain.
-
Coming together quite nicely Jessie, the camo is starting to look really good now.
Des.
-
Yep, that second try worked fine for you.
Masking takes some time but does make the diference imo.
Cheers
-
Good job on the masking, Jessie. The little Nieuport is looking good!
Looking forward to the next updates.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Hi Jessie
I agree with Rob and Zabu that the second go has certainly paid dividends and all that hard work on your part was very worthwhile. It's looking good!
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Jesse,
Your camo is looking great as the others have said! Looking forward to morw,

Jessie,
Great work on your little Nieuport my friend. It's always seems to be such a seldom seen build for some reason.I'm glad to see you on this wonderful little kit. Looking forward to see more.

Posing with the rudder
(http://www.aeroscale.co.uk/photos/feature/4206/onze_23.jpg)
The rules of the Aeroscale group build I'm participating in require some detailing to be done to the engine so I constructed a quick and dirty length template so I could cut some hypotube to make pushrods

Test fit of the engine in place

She's coming along beautifully, Jessie. Looks like you're almost ready to put the top wing on. The camo looks lovely.
Cheers,
Bud

the engine! You're making good progress.

Remarkably few decals are needed to complete the colour scheme
