Hi there,
as a newbie here I wanted to share some pics of my current project. This one is with a lot of "firsts".
- first WWI subject
- first bi-plane
- first rigging (with the use of Bob's buckles)
- first try at wood grain
I thought for the beginning something from Eduards weekend line would be right. After finishing the inside of the fuselage halves I brought everything together and started with a preshading followed by a couple of layers of Tamiya's flesh. Then I started with the wood grain decals by Uschi van der Rosten which went on very nicely. It was very time consuming but I like the overall look. Didn't know if I could achieve this by painting.
On to the pics:

My preshading is to dark. Thanks for looking and critics are very welcome.

That looks bloody good so far - the wood grain decals are very effective.
Good luck with your build, mate.

Extraordinary, ro! Would never know that this is your first in all those categories. The wood grain is brilliant.
Cheers,
Bud

I sure hope to see more of your firsts, because this one looks perfect!
Nice woodgrain indeed. Keep up with the good work.
Cheers.

I agree with my friend Bud! Very impressive wood grain!

Your Albatros is coming along quite nicely. I am going to have to try those Uschi van der Rosten decals. They look better and better each and every time I see them on a model.
-
Fuselage it looks great ! Well done!
-
Hi Ro,
Yep, the wood grain is excellent. I agree the preshading is a little dark - but that's how they represent it on the Uschi website - I think their technique of preshading in black is too harsh..
Great job though - you've jumped in the deep end!
Ps I found rigging in 1/48 very fiddly! Good luck :o
-
That looks really nice. The decal looks really effective.
-
For a list of firsts you have done a remarkable job Robert, the wood grain decals look excellent, slightly too dark with the pre-shade but overall it turned out very well, looking forward to seeing what you do next.

Very convincing wood! The effort with the decals was surely worth taking!
-
The woodgrain looks very good. But it should go only in one direction. They must be horizontal.
-
You have done well so far, ro...as Soren mentioned the woodgrain should
be in the direction of the airflow. Having said that, I am really impressed
with your application of the woodgrain decals. I see I am going to have to
pick up some of those! Thanks for sharing your work, keep at it and
I look forward to more updates.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hi there,
first thanks a lot for all your comments, I really appreciate it.
@Rob: Yes, you should try the decals, they perform very well.
@Sören: Thanks for your advice, I know the woodgrain would be better just in the direction of the airflow, doing so I thought it would be a little boring and uniform, so lets say it's a little bit artistic license.
Today only little progress, I finished painting the upper and lower wings. Painting was done with Tamiya acrylics. Thanks for looking.

Good job on the wings, Ro. :) About the only thing I would mention is to
my relatively untrained eye you possibly could darken the lighter green and brown
rib tapes to blend in a bit more as you did with the dark green, which to me is pretty=
well spot on. Your airbrushing in general is very smooth and convincing. Good work!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Beautiful work on the wings and tail Robert, it will be nice to see it all go together.

Hi friends,
thank you all for your interest. Tonight some more pics from my progress. The lower wings are on and I started the rigging. Those eyelets and buckles are really small but it works better than I inspected. I tried to replace parts of the Spandau 08/15 machine guns with Master barrels (some parts to fiddly). Next was installing the UC with rigging. Next big step will be the upper wing, I'm actually not sure how to manage this ...
Thanks for looking.

Robert, you are building a really good looking aeroplane! Extremely well done.
Looking forward to the next installment. Thanks for sharing!

all in all a damn good first ww1 subject. as to how to do the wing i suggest to glue the "v" struts to the top wing and let the glue dry solid. i usually use a couple paint jars to support the wing on the ends. this way the struts will hang perpendicular to the wing. if you do it upside down it can be done but the struts want to lay over as the glue drys. then i would glue the cabane array struts to the fuselage try to angle them to the approximate angle they should end up. while this glue is still pliable mount the top wing and glue them to the bottom wing. this way you can adjust the cabanes into place and the solid glued "v" struts will hold the weight of the wing up. i hope i am explaining the procedure clearly. if you jave more questions dont hesitate to ask. we all do things our own way but i think most will agree that the above procedure would be one way to do it without too much trouble.

Excellent work Robert, this is going to be a spectacular looking model by the time you are done.

Absolutely marvellous! You are a very talented modeller indeed. I like the woodgrain effect very very much! I can only hope to get near to the effect you`ve acheived here when the time comes for my albatroses (DIII, DR.I, DV).

Very fine work all 'round, ro!

A really impressive 1/48th build! As a matter of fact, in any scale!!

Hi guys,
thank you all for your comments. Today I finished rigging on the upper wing, it's now ready for mounting.
@Albatros1234: Thank you very much for explaining on how to install the upper wing, it's well explained and I'm going to try this. :)
greetings ro

Very nice looking Albie.
It's going to be amazing when you have finished it.

Hi to all,
some more progress for now. Thanks to the advice from Albatros1234 I managed to install the upper wing. Today I worked on the rigging and finished one side. It worked okay but was very fiddly.
Thanks for looking.

Nice to see the top wing on. The rigging is looking very good, it can be fiddly but it makes the model, well done so far.

Great progress, Robert! Fiddily or not, you are doing wonderfully with
the rigging. Looks like the upper wing troubles were no trouble at all.
Keep up the good work!

Ernie :)

Having built several of these kits I must say yours is turning out magnificently! The rigging looks great!

Hi Everybody,
after two weeks of vacation I now finished my Albatros. Great kit by Eduard, I tried and learned a lot of things and had so much fun with it. Thanks for all your comments and help. I will definitely do another WWI subject. More pics will come in the finished section.
