Title: Academy 1/32 Nieuport 17
Post by: Ernie on September 12, 2013, 08:57:41 AM
Well I've begun my build, Academy's Nieuport 17, a model definately not in the
class of Wingnuts, but a good one for entry level modelers.
Along with the basic model, I'll be using PE parts from Tom's Modelworks, Mastercasters
resin cowling and wheels, and a couple of scratch-built parts from me.
The model is a few years old and has a few scale issues, but a good starter.

More pictures to follow in a little while.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Glad to have you along, Des & Bo.  As far as the paint scheme, I'm leaning toward
Georges Guynemer's plane, overall aluminum except brown & green camouflage on the
upper surfaces of the wings.
I'll bring you up to date with a few pictures...
First off, a couple of the Le Rhone engine first front, then rear.

Starting on the cockpit i tried to replicate the sheathing on the fuselage sides in the cockpit area.  I used
0.10" plastic sheet scored with a scriber.  Painted with oils.  The wooden floor area is also 0.10" sheet, scored
with a razor saw blade, and painted with Vajello wood, and a black ink wash to give a bit of woodgrain, then
coated with Tamiya clear yellow.

I'm in the process of making the interior framing, waiting patiently for the oil paint to dry.  When it finally does
around the end of the week, I plan on adding the interior bracing wires with monofiliment line.  Sorry for this
picture..I think it ended up the wrong way around. :-[

While my paint dries, I have been tinkering with interior goodies.  The instrument panel was easy...Nieuports
didn't really have one, so I got away with a little artistic licence as to where to place the few instruments.
I'm not sure why the photo ended up on it's side...hopefully you won't get a kink in your neck checking it out. ;)

The compass I am quite pleased with...my first attempt at soldering...definately beginners luck.  My wife gave me
a soldering gun for Christmas last year and I finally got up enough nerve to actually use the blasted thing. ;D

Well that's it for now.  More to come before long.
Thanks for looking, and your thoughts and advice more than welcome!

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Ernie,
I don't suppose Bishop's 1566 has been, or is being considered? Don't let me influence your choice, I'm sure you've already decided on a scheme...............
Great to see you diving in, I'll be watching closely. Enjoy above all else, and I suspect a winner is in the wings!

Ernie,

I'm looking forward to following your build. Excellent work on the interior sheathing and the cockpit instruments. I am impressed. However, I wouldn't use the box art as a guide to attaching the landing gear. Something has gone pear shaped there.

Thanks Lance, Rob, Jacek & Rick for the generous comments! :)
I think my skewed pictures have magically righted themselves...at least they look
proper this morning...one of life's mysteries, I suppose. ::) ;)

Lance I was thinking of Wm. Bishop's plane and if this one turns out, I may do the RFC one.  I'm not sure where to get the decals for it.  For now, though, I'll stick with the French version, after all, it's
a Nieuport, mon ami.  ;);D

Rob, As far as tips for soldering go, all I can say is have your soldering iron tip tinned properly and use small bits of flux and solder.  Truthfully, it was not nearly as hard as I thought it would
be...even for an artistically challenged type like me! ;D  I actually learned everything from a few Youtube
videos.  Here's one link I used...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNutiaYld_4

Ok, here's a few more pics of tidbits I've been tinkering with while wating for the oils to dry. ::)

I added the side strips to the rudder pedal wood base with strip styrene.  I found out that they were
wood and not metal since, so I will have to repaint them. :-[

Speaking of soldering...The seat is from the Tom's set.  I sort of made a pig's ear of it...my first try,
but luckily paint can cover a multitude of sins, eh? ;)

Before...(http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg99/erniepar/Academy%20Nieuport%2017/ni17g_zps016a9f00.jpg)

And after...(http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg99/erniepar/Academy%20Nieuport%2017/ni17h_zps9e453e3c.jpg)

This soldering bit had completely gone to my head, and I figured I knew it all, so I tried to make a
pulseometer...I managed to get the basic shape pretty fair, but it is totally out of scale...probably
about a metre long in the real world, but you know, I will likely use it, just because I can. ;D

Teeny-tiny soldering & CA job...(http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg99/erniepar/Academy%20Nieuport%2017/ni17i_zps765c2210.jpg)

Well that's about all I have to show for now, so Thanks for looking!

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Ernie,
The soldering work is amazing, I've often been tempted but it's appeared intimidating. I want to incorporate soldering into my bag of modelling tricks; what size iron do you have? Must be pretty small to handle the likes of your pulsometer, neat!

Lance

Title: Re: Academy 1/32 Nieuport 17
Post by: Ernie on September 13, 2013, 02:42:13 AM
Thanks, Lance. :)  Honestly, I think my efforts are beginners luck.  One thing I
did learn is it's not so much the size of the iron (there must be a joke here somewhere ;) ;D ),
it's more the amount of solder and flux you use.  For the pulseometer and seat the pieces of
solder I used was little bits about a millimetre in size...the flux (which dictates where the solder
will flow), I use little tiny dabs with the end of a toothpick.  Stick a little piece of solder on top of
the flux, apply some heat with the iron, and bingo.  Sometimes it even works! ;D
As for the soldering gun I use, it's just a Home Hardware basic kit...goes for about $30.00.
Hey, if I can do it, anyone can! :)

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hi everyone.  Just a quick little update for now.  I decaled the rudder and I have
to warn anyone building this kit.  The Academy decals are quite nice regarding
colour and layout etc., but they are fairly thick and a nightmare to try and get them
to settle down over curves etc.  I swear I must have gone through half a bottle of
Micro-sol to get them to lay down over the rounded edges!  Even at that I had to wait until
they were dry, then carefully trimmed the carrier film away and ran Tamiya extra thin cement
around the edge.  After that I touched-up the paint (I see the blue is not quite a match, but
will leave it for now).
I drilled out the rudder and CA'd a pair of 0.5mm wires to mate with the fuselage.  There is
nothing to lock the rudder to the tail end of the fuselage otherwise.  I am figuring to embed
a couple of lengths of 0.08 brass tube in the rear end to accept the rudder wires.
That's about it for now...I'll be back to work on it later today.  Updates to come if it goes well! ;)
Thanks for looking!

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Very thick decals does Revell, but help softeners. I use Mr. Mark Setter under decals, and Mr. Mark Softer on the decal.
I do not know why they banned sales in Europe?
I also as Des am trying to paint control surfaces.

So is laid even thick decals after using Mr. Mark Softer

Really enjoying the updates Ernie. Keep up the good work! You talk about working at at snail's pace; I can empathise.

I have a dear friend who is an expert builder of racing engines for vintage cars, mostly Ferrari and Alfa Romeo. I have heard him say more than once something to the effect of "the more I do this, the longer it takes me." He doesn't mean he is slowing down. He means the more he learns, the greater the time and attention he pays to the smallest stuff.

Well friends, here's a bit of an update.  I've been working on the cockpit area
and while it's slow, it is starting to take shape.  I'm not accomplished enough
to have perfect detail, so what I'm happy with for now is the feel of the
aeroplane and hopefully the cockpit is starting to look busy enough.

Thank you for the kind words Nigel, Dave and Rick.  Alot of my efforts are inspiried
by your work.  Much appreciated!)
Patrick, Thanks to you as well.  As for the wood effect, it is pretty well old-school.
The base is Tamiya Deck Tan acrylic, then when dry a mixture of oil paints...I think it
was raw umber, raw sienna and burnt umber, thinned and mixed until I ended up with
a colour I was happy with.  The hard part is waiting for the oils to dry...took about a week.
After that I sprayed a coat of Tamiya clear orange and then Vallejo semi-gloss varnish.
Having said all that, I would suggest looking at PrzemoL's wonderful Sopwith Triplane
construction.  His woodgrain is world's better and all done with acrylics.  I plan on trying
that in my next build.  Anyway, I hope I answered some of your questions.
Thanks again everyone for looking in.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

I had the opportunity to sit in the cockpit of the mock-up Nieuport 17's used in the movie "Flyboys" which was filmed at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire , a few years back.

The cockpit is tiny to squeeze into, and I am built quite "wiry".

Your cockpit looks like I remember it Ernie!

Keep up the momentum' you are doing a good job.

With my best wishes,

Dave

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thank you Ernie I'll keep this in mind and will also re-look at the build of PrzemoL's triplane.

Kind regards
Patrick

Thank you so much Gregory and Dave.  Your comments are very encouraging!
Dave, I wonder if you happened to notice if there is a bulkhead or screen behind
the seat?  I am thinking there likely is, but am not sure.  I may just wing it and
fix up something along those lines. ;) ;D

Hi Ernie,

It is a few years ago now since I sat in the N17, but if I remember correctly, I think that the structure was open and you could see all the way back inside the fuselage.

I do remember feeling how small the cockpit was inside....really snug.

If the N17 is still at Duxford IWM I will ask a friend of mine to take a look for you and get a picture next time he is there working on the aircraft.

Best wishes with the model,

Dave

PS maybe there will be some images or a walkround on google somewhere?

Dave, thanks for the information.  About all I could find was Mark Miller's great 3d

not sure if I should use it or not...decisions, decisions!  ;D

Ernie, I can only echo what the others have said, mate- that's coming along brilliantly.

I agree about soldering- it makes working with brass so much easier.  Have you tried lo-melt solder for white metal?

Thanks so much for the encouragement, Dal.  Very much appreciated!  I've not tried the lo-melt solder.
Is it any different in use than the regular stuff?...other than less heat needed?  Thanks for the suggestion.
I'll have to give it a try.

G'day, Ernie.

Lo-melt is mainly used for white metal, such as figures.  It's a little more complicated than standard solder, as you'll need a low temperature iron (capable of 100 to 110°C- or an in-line rheostat to lower the current to the iron) and the correct flux.  I already had it on hand and found it was easier to use on the Aber barrel sets I was putting together than the 60/40 rosin core or eutectic solder I normally use.  It comes in sticks, not as a paste, but I trim some flakes off if I'm doing small stuff.

If you're doing white metal figures, though, it's brilliant as it both fills and creates a very strong join.  The horse head below was soldered and only needed some putty to allow the mane to be worked, to hide the join.  If you're not doing white metal, it's probably not worth the bother.

Cheers.

Dal.

For now, I guess it's stick with the usual. ;D

Just a little update today, mes amis.  I've finally given the pilot something
to sit on...pretty crude seat cushion, but not too noticeable. ;)  Also the Tom's
brass seatbelts, a Vickers charging handle and a couple of wires running from
the back of the instruments to the netherworld forward.  I simulated an ammo
chest ahead of the instruments, more as a view block than anything.  Silly, but
effective. ;D
  Thanks for looking, everyone.

Very nicely done Ernie, one question though - the seat appears to be way too far forward, looking at where it is the pilot would have the instrument sitting on his chest and his face would be nearly touching the forward cockpit padding. Is this the position stipulated in the instructions?
I personally would move the seat back so the back of the seat is nearly level with the rear of the cockpit cutout, just my opinion though.

Des.
Title: Re: Academy 1/32 Nieuport 17
Post by: Ernie on September 26, 2013, 09:03:43 AM
Thanks for the comments, Bo and Des.  I appreciate your attention. :)

Des, this is a quandry I have been in for a while.  Apparently the Academy model
is a smidge out of scale at certain areas.  I was following Mark Miller's 3d drawings
and it shows the front of the seat actually resting on the frame for the instrument
"panel".
http://www.wwi-models.org/Images/Miller/render/Nieuport/0n17b.jpg

It looks like the pilot had to put his legs through the frame to rest on the
rudder pedals.  Now having said all that I have to confess that I opened the rear
of the cockpit opening about 2.5mm, having read in write-ups that the opening is
too small and should be enlarged.  I have had the nagging thoughts that I goofed
up royally doing this.  I will look seriously at moving the seat back a bit, so watch
this space. ;) ;D
Thanks a lot for bringing it up, Des.  This probably would have driven me to distraction
every time I looked at it.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

You are correct in saying that the pilot had to put his legs through the frame to reach the rudder bar, but the picture below shows the back of the seat just about flush with the rear of the cockpit opening, the seat also leans back. I had a good look at some photos and it is quite obvious that the cockpit of this aeroplane is very confined, you wouldn't want to be over six foot tall  :-\

Des and Rick, Thanks for the input!  Much appreciated. :)

Des, that is a dandy drawing...very useful! I see the beginning of my troubles right
away.   The instrument frame in the drawing is about even with the front edge of the
cockpit opening, where as in the model it is to be placed2-3mm forward, which drags the
seat with it.  I'm not going to try to move it back to where it should be in my model as I
figure that would really open a can of worms, making all my little bits out of place.
I think the lesser of the two evils would be just move the seat and call it good.  Not
prototypical by any means, but about the best I can do to fix the situation.
Of course with what you mentioned about pilots not being over 6' tall notwithstanding,
in my version, I need someone about 6'8" just to reach the rudder pedals! ;) ;D
Revision to come...

Cheers,
Ernie :)

I'm back with the new and improved(???) seat placement in the Nieuport.
I have only moved the seat back and raised it slightly so I believe it is close
to where it should be situated.  Before everyone gets all excited, I have to say
I didn't want to take a chance on wrecking all my work with the instrument
frame and the balance of the cockpit, so there is a gap between the front of the
seat and the frame where it should sit.  it was a trade off, so I figured this was
the best fix, seeing that the cockpit in the Nieuport was tight anyway and the only
thing that normally is in full view is the seat.  With apologies for the errors involved,
I will call this phase done and move on to the rest of the build. ;)

This is the new placement of the seat.  You will see that to have it all in the right place
I would have to move everything else aft about 3mm, and if I tried that, I would be
a blithering idiot in no time! ;D

This is what things look like with the fuselage together...just placed for the photo,
not glued together yet.

Ok my friends, time for a mini-update.  I have done the pre-shading on the wings -
not my strong suit, but should suffice.

I have cut the elevators from the horozontal stabilizer to position them lowered as they
were normally in that position when the aeroplane was on the ground.
Here they are not cemented into place, but just to let you see what I wanted to get at.
The rudder is also off centre a bit, which I think looks a bit better. ;)

Here we are with another bit of news.  I have sprayed the upper surfaces of the wings in the green
and brown colours of Lt. Guynemer's Nieuport...with aluminum edging.
You may notice a ugly sploch on the green of the top wing. :o  Note to self...
never shake a bottle of dark iron without checking if the cap is on tight! ::) :-[

The underside of the wings are now sprayed
with Alclad White Aluminum.  Preshading is Tamiya wood brown with a bit of grey.

The fuselage aft of the cockpit is also now sprayed with the White Aluminum.  I did a bit of
preshading on the sides...I'm thinking I should have made that a bit heavier.

Finally, for now, I have painted the tail skid woody brown and replaced the plastic
skid with brass tube, coloured with the now hated Dark Iron. ;) ;D
(http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg99/erniepar/Academy%20Nieuport%2017/nieuport17o5_zps14c6d0f2.jpg)

I'm sure you are getting tired looking at the Nieuport's bum. ;D  Now I get to start on
the nose area so a change of scenery to come. :)
Thanks for your interest!

Cheers,
Ernie :)

The fuselage weathering imho seems to be quite balanced with the rest ( tail and wing underside ), but you can always try to post-shade. Very nice skid.

this is very nice paintwork, I like the aluminum color on the fuselage, together with the scheme on the wings should be a cracker. Thanks for sharing your pics.

I forgot you were doing the Academy/Nungesser bird so to go with the figure, Mnta has also produced  a generic French pilot head set: 3 heads with different style flying helmets.

Thanks for the support Patrick, Robert, Steve & Rick.  It is a real boost to have your
encouragement!
Rick, you were right the first time...it's Georges Guynemer's kite. ;)

I have the nose together and painted...hope to have photos up later today.
The Academy decals are driving me to distraction.  They are impervious to micro-sol and
the only way I can get them to stick (barely) is a combination of micro-sol (remember to
order the gallon size next time!) and heat from the hair dryer, which I have no more use
for after working with these...decals. ;) ;D
The big trouble I have right now is silvering on the top wing large#2 decal.  I cannot for
the life of me get rid of the silvering.  I think I may just have to live with it.
Today I figure on trying to get the balance of the decaling done and fix the lower wings to
the fuselage...photos to follow.
Thanks for your interest guys.  If any of you know any secrets to using the Academy decals
by all means let me know! ;D

Cheers,
Ernie :)

ernie,
The only other technique I know of is using a pool of Future/Pledge with Future shine,to lay the decals on. I haven't tried this method so maybe someone else can chime in explaining the method?

Ok, here's a bit of an update as promised.  The Nieuport is starting to
look a little more like an aeroplane now.  I had originally painted the area
from the cockpit forward with Alclad Duraluminum, but it didn't look quite
right...too dark a shade compared to the rest of the fuselage, so I decided
to paint the whole fuselage with a couple coats of Alclad semi-matt Aluminum
to hopefully blend everything together.  The outcome is pretty much what I was
looking for, thank goodness! :P  The cowling I left the Duraluminum colour.

The wings were attached with Tamiya Extra Thin cement as well as thin CA, so hopefully
that should hold them.  From measuring drawings, I figured that the dihedral was about
3 degrees.

I'm pleased that you can see the instruments when looking from behind the cockpit...so all
that work was not all for naught. :)  Apologies for the shadow in the photo! :-[

I am still fighting the decal wars...the black flash behind the cockpit decal was totally useless,
as it would not adhere to the curves, so I ended up painting it with Tamiya semi-gloss black.
I think I will have to paint the fuselage with a clear coat to hide the carrier film from the
decals on the sides.  They are quite evident as the light changes.  Ho-hum!  Nothing new there. ;)

So that is where we sit at the present time.  Today, I am planning to start cementing the anchor
eyelets for the rigging into the wings and hopefully get some of the tail rigging finished.

Thanks for looking. :) Comments and advice gratefully received ;) ;D

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thanks for the comments, Mike.  As for the Gaspatch turnbuckles, I think they are
great.  A mite expensive, but they add a lot to a model, I feel.  A good choice for
myself whose attempts at home-made ended up too over-sized and not worth the
effort. :-[ ;D

Title: Re: Academy 1/32 Nieuport 17
Post by: Nigel Jackson on October 14, 2013, 09:19:41 PM
Hi Ernie

How do you attach those turnbuckles? Is it a case of drilling a hole into the wing and then glueing them in direct, or do they sit a short way along a line of rigging, making it necessary to attach rigging at each end? Sorry if it's a bit of a dumb question.

Best wishes
Nigel

Title: Re: Academy 1/32 Nieuport 17
Post by: Ernie on October 14, 2013, 09:53:15 PM
Hi Nigel, not a dumb question at all!  Actually it's both. I used the turnbuckles that have
the anchors already attached for the most part, which is as you describe, drill a hole,
(I think I used a 0.4mm bit) and CA the anchor in.  in two spots where the rigging starts
inside the fuselage (above the wings), I used the turnbuckles that don't have any other
attachments.  Those I did attach the wires to each end.  Hope that helps. :)

Moving on, here's the latest installment of the Nieuport saga. ;)
First off, painted the area where I will install the Tom's PE stitching...it will
look better, honestly! ;) ;D  After that came the Cabane struts.

I must warn anyone about to build the Academy Nieuport, beware the front Cabanes.
They are shown to be installed backwards!  I figured this out after installing them as
per the instructions...I checked the references and sure enough they were the wrong
way around.  See below.

From there, I installed the Tom's stitching to the fuselage, then I replaced the kit supplied
Vickers machine gun with a marvelous resin version from Gaspatch, a great improvement
and well worth it.  I painted the gun first with Alclad Dull Aluminum, then Gunze buffable
Dark Iron metalizer paint.  I lightly sanded and picked away at the top coat to show some
wear and tear.  Now this is not nearly as convincing as Bo's superb Spandau in his Alby
build, but for my elementary talents, it looks not too bad.

And the other side...

Here's a shot of the cockpit and windscreen area.  She's starting to look a little more
complete, which is pleasing.

I have yet to figure something for the ammunition delivery and ejection system.  That
will be my next hurdle. ??? ;D

I was feeling quite smug and pleased with myself...bad mistake :-[ when I moved the wrong
way and managed to knock the starboard wing completely off.  As Homer Simpson would
say, DOH!!  So here is my girl back on the blocks waiting for the re-gluing to dry.  :-[ ;D

So that is where we are right now.  More to come...stay tuned.

Cheers,

Here's a few photos of my latest tinkerings.  I tried to improve the ammunition delivery
fairing with questionable success, but I think I can live with it...for now. :-\

Moving on, other than putting together a few sub-assemblies, about the only other
thing I managed to do was increase the weathering a little...not too much, I hope! ;)

That's about it for now, mes amis.  I'm hoping next to finally get the upper wing
in place, although I have a sinking feeling that I will have to increase the dihedral of
the lower wings.  I took a quick look today and without forcing anything it looked like
about a 3mm gap between the bottom of the struts and the lower wing.  We shall see... ;) ;D
Thanks for looking. More to come.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hello Ernie:

You are really doing a bang up job on this kit.  It is not one of Academy's best efforts and you are definitely a patient man to do the work you are doing on this kit.  The silver finish is a challenge and you are doing outstanding work on the weathering and subtle shading effects.
I have another one of these and will be referencing your work when and if I ever tackle another one.
I am looking forward to seeing you progress through to completion.

It's attached with Tamiya Extra-Thin cement followed by a little thin CA.
Here's a peek at the strut.

I also installed the aileron bell cranks in the top wing.  I replaced the kit version with
Tom's PE handles which I CA'd to 0.6mm brass tube.  The only other thing for now was
replacing the plastic tail braces also with the 0.6 tube.
That's about all for now.  If all goes well with the top wing, the next big things will be the
undercarriage and rigging.  More to come.
  Thanks for looking. :)

Cheers,

She's looking excellent Ernie, great to see the top wing fitted, and your ammo chutes look fine to me, you are doing an all round brilliant build, thank you for sharing it with us.

Ernie,
Good to see your Nieuport is now a biplane! Apparently there were no issues regarding the dihedral on the lower wings as you thought?

Thanks Des and Rick! Since I reversed the front cabanes I was able to sand
them down about 1mm, which helped a lot as far as reducing the interplanes gap
was concerned.  I will find out later if the glue held. ;)

Hi Ernie,

Really a great build. I like this plane very much. I'm glad I purchased it, but when I see the difficulties of fixing the upper wing, and the troubles I already  had with the SE5a of WnW, I think I will wait quite a while to start on this one. Many congratulations Ernie it's a beauty!

Kind regards

Patrick

Thanks for the support, Patrick.  Don't let the top wing worry you.  Actually it went
on without any trouble at all. In fact, the whole aeroplane goes together very well.
It is an excellent model for starting into 1/32 scale.  It is pretty basic, for sure, but
is really easy to improve on.  It's one of those "if I can do it, anyone can!" ;) ;D
If there is a down side to this one, It's the decals, which are a pain, but with patience
and some mutterings they can be made to behave...sort of. ;) ;D

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Another day, another bit of progress.  Actually mes amis, it is a fair bit of
progress this time.  I have installed the upper wing, which wasn't much trouble
at all, and most of the rigging.  I still have a few wires to install when the
undercarriage is complete, and some of the turnbuckles need a little fine tuning :-[,
but it's coming along quite well, all things considered. :D
Here's some photos to show what's up.  Please forgive the horrid photography...not
my strength and I was a bit rushed. :-[ ;)

...And one of the underside.  I think I will hold the weathering where it is...I worry about
going overboard...which I probably have already! ;D

You may notice a couple of bare patches where the small cockades were.  I made the mistake
of forgetting about the decals when I was using some tape and managed to remove both decals
clean as can be. :-[ >:(  Sometimes I wonder where my mind went! ;D  So I guess I will have
to gain some experience painting circles.  This should be interesting! ;) ;D
So that is where we stand so far.  I will be working on the undercarriage next and then finish
the rigging, so watch this space, as they say.
Thanks for looking, and a big merci for the kind support you all have shown!

Cheers,
Ernie :)

It's looking better from update to update Ernie.

When i started to watch the pics the fisrt thing that came to my mind was... wow. The colours are nicely balanced for the scale imho, and the weathering it's perfect.

That Ni it will be a jewel.

Great work Ernie!  She's lookng very trim and beautiful. I really like this particular French scheme, combining the aluminum doped fuselage wth the earth camo wings.  Very well done!

It's been fun building the Roden Ni.27 in tandem with your Academy Ni.17 build.  There were some problematic similarities! ;)  I have the Academy kit and will use your thread as a guide.  Thanks!

Bob

Hi my fellow forumites. ;)  I'm finally nearing the end of M. Guynemer's kite.

At last look, about all I had to tackle was the undercarriage, so theres where we start.
after assembling, I used thick thread to simulate the bungee cords on the axle ends.

I noticed in photos of the Nieuport 17 that the undercarriage legs had metal braces where
they attached to the fuselage, so I tried to replicate that with thin bits of brass sheet...

Man I hate macro shots...all the horrible bits pop out at you! >:( :-[ ;D
Anyway, here's how she sits on her wheels.

Pardon the toothpick...oops. :-[ ;D
So that's about all the actual building done.  I still have do a couple of little touch-ups
here and there, so I will pop in later with that, and then I guess I'll be able to declare her
finished. :D Looking forward to that.
Still looking for decals for the lower wings without any joy as yet, but will plod on with that.
So that is where we stand right now...

As I mentioned, I will have one more little update when I finish my tid-bitting. ;) ;D
Thanks for looking!

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Lindsay

Thanks for the support, Lindsay.  You are right about the rigging adding a surprising amount
of strength to the plane.

So here we are at the end of the line.  This is the final update, my friends.
I added a mirror that I scratched together.  It's just aluminum foil cemented to a thin
plastic disk.  The rim is a HGW bezel.  I didn't have anything to tell me where to mount it,
so I made an educated guess and put it on the edge of the upper wing, centred over the
windscreen.

My dilemma to do with the wrecked lower wing decals has been solved.  I had some decals
from a Eduard 1/72 Nieuport 17 kit available.  It dawned on me that the large decals for the
teeny scale would not be far off for the small markings needed for my 1/32 Nieuport. ;)
I applied them and they don't look too bad. :D

About the only other thing I did was to sirty up the wheels and undercarriage a little
with some Tamiya weathering powders.  Unfortunately I couldn't get a photo that shows
it properly.
So that's about it, mes amis.  I will be posting my final photos in the completed section
tomorrow.  Thank you everyone for following along and providing such welcomed support.
It has been very much appreciated! :)

Cheers,
Ernie :)

I like your undercarriage support brackets.  Adds additional interest to that area.  This is not an easy model to build and you did an outstanding job.  I really like the contrast between the upper wing being painted camouflage and the rest silver.  Really a striking scheme and your preshading with silver turned out perfect.
