i'm waiting for Toms workmodels "French interior" to continue inside...
-
Hi Quentin, great to see this kit getting built, you are off to a great start with the prop and the Le Rhone...
Cheers
-
Quentin,
Very nice start; the wood effect on the prop is incredibly well done. Enjoy your first WW One Build, I'm sure there will be many more!
Cheers,
Lance
-
I did this model.
Engine cover will need a lot of grind !
Earn some extra air intakes for the engine.
Have fun!
Jacek.
-
thanks all!
Sure i believe there will be many more!
Jacek, you mean engine cover is too thick?
I saw on pictures others air intakes, in left side for example (visible in box art)
let me know where exactly.
Thank for help!
-
Hello, Quentin -
I have this kit in my stash so will follow with interest.
Great work so far - love the wood effect on the prop. Good luck with the rest of the build.
Regards
Dave
-
Wonderful work on the engine and prop, Quentin. Be careful on the seat. If you try to shape it without doing the following, it will crack. Before bending it to shape, sand it down a little thinner. Then, soak it in boiling water, pull it out and immediately bend it around a dowel or pen or any cylinder of the correct size.
Can't wait to see your next update.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Great work, Quentin! Excellent job on the propeller. Together with the
engine, you've made a super start. Thanks for sharing your work.
Best Regards,
Ernie :)

thanks Bud,
in fact your help came too late! (and my post also!) the back seat broke...
but i'll change by the PE part i'm waiting for, it 'll be fine!
I knew i should use carefully and get warm... but i wanted to go fast...
this is the Toms modelworks PE:

I also start to paint masts, but need to be shade off, and i'll put Bare Metal for the clamps

A great start with the engine and propeller Quentin, the wood on the propeller is excellent, the struts also look good, this will be a really good build to watch.

Hi Quentin! I am currently building the Roden Ni 27, which is essentially the same kit, so I will be watching your build with interest, as we are at about the same stage.
My kit seat broke also, so I made a new one from ten thou sheet styrene. The Tom's seat should work well also.
Your struts look great! My only suggestion is perhaps replacing the tiny locating nubs with brass wire. I did this, and it's a little tricky, but makes for easier and stronger upper wing attachment. I did not do this on the Roden Albatros DIII, and it was a real adventure getting the top wing in place. The plastic nubs just do not provide enough positive fit to secure the top wing.
I'm also interesting in how folks attach the lower wings to the fuselage. From Jacek's photo, it looks like he used a brass tube insert to accept brass rod pins placed in the wings. How is proper dihedral established in that method? I'm leaning towards using a brass spar through the lower fuselage with holes drilled in the wings. This approach has its own problems, including getting the dihedral right. Has anyone just used the plastic nubs and glue?
Sorry for the mild thread hijack, but it does all relate to this kit and build. :D
Regards,
Bob
-
thanks Bob, as you im not confident with nubs, in all the kit in fact! need something stronger.
I can't answer for lower wings attach... Perhaps Jacek will explain us how i did...
others pictures soon, i really enjoy the building!
-
Original wing very poorly to hold the fuselage.
I did it like this:
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g436/malutki352/Nieuport%2024bis/Ni-24bis0002.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/malutki352/media/Nieuport%2024bis/Ni-24bis0002.jpg.html)
-
Thanks Jacek. That looks like what I am considering. I see that you included slots for the landing gear struts as well. Good choice!
Regards,
Bob

I have also in my stash this model. I will be watching.
I want to paint it in Polish service, now I have to wait, because was discovered in Polish Aviation Museum in Krakow, new picture of this plane. On the left side wasn't painted this lady, there is was painted dragon, so I will wait until will producednew decals.

well, now i can finish interior and start fuselage!
-
Hey Quentin. You're coming along well with the Nieuport. The PE bits can
really help dress up a basic kit. What did you use for the seat cushion? I like
the stitching around it. Keep up the good work. I look forward to more updates.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Thanks Ernie,
i just used modelling past for children works, it is soft enough to sculpture and it becomes solid by drying.
and i painted with acrylic paints and varnish with Klear
-
my next order is Guyenemer figure from Manta Figurines (small french workshop). He didn't pilot Nieuport 24 bis, but the figure is very very nice...
(http://nsm08.casimages.com/img/2013/09/05//13090508261016079111526990.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/img.php?i=13090508261016079111526990.jpg)
-
I'm looking forward to seeing the work on the figure of
Georges Guynemer. I've never painted any figures and
am becoming much more interested in doing so. I hope you
don't mind me looking over your shoulder, trying to learn something. ;D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Not a problem for me Ernie! you're welcome ;)
I paint figures since i m chidren, I think it give a human touch to the model.
effectivly you can try it's not so difficult and very pleasant to do.
-
So i started my first weathering work, something quite new for me (i did it on a B1 Bis French tank, but very different)...
i started to shade with diluted acrylic brown and enamel dark grey, next i put a "Argenture" coat with dry brush, and after light grey on ribs.
it need to be smooth, brush are too visible.

let me know what you think about these first stape!
(Argenture is a paint with aluminium powder, use to restaur antics furnitures)

cockpit is not complet but working on. Roden kit not so easy to build with very poor indications where to put parts, and cockpit without is own case, so not very stable until cement two parts of fuselage.(not yet!)

Quentin,
Now that's some Outstanding project my friend. I've the same kit in the stash. I'd planned on building the Polish marked version, but haven't come anywhere close to starting yet. Maybe someday though.

Your model is coming along nicely, Quentin. Not the easiest, but you are doing
well. I really like the seatbelts. Thanks for the update. Looking forward to the
next.

thanks all to comment and support!
I know there is many things i could improve, but i go to the easyer way to understand how to build, next will be better!
don't be embarrassed to advise me, i'm here to learn!

Quentin,
Not much that I see you need advising on :) Your wings look really nice and the interior looks the part. As you mentioned earlier, Roden kits do take a little more work. The results are worth the effort though, At least in my Humble Opinion ;)

-
Coming along very nicely, Sir!
-
very touched by your answers!
i cemented the engine hoods, but needed to plane cylinders because hoods are too thick (as Jacek told before...)

Well done.

She's coming along beautifully Quentin, the interior looks great as does the engine, you are doing a super job, well done.

Wow...this Ni was skipping on me! >:(
Very nice interior and Vickers. The engine it's a beauty.

Thanks all!
a little progress on. a coat of "silver grey" on fuselage

as you can see, model will not be new but with weathering apparence
I changed blue in direction wing for a light blue
(http://nsm08.casimages.com/img/2013/09/12//13091206341116079111545066.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/img.php?i=13091206341116079111545066.jpg)
in fact, Roden's decals doesn't work well, i have to paint this part.
I painted engine hoods with Mr Metal Color, a paint very good to polish.
(http://nsm08.casimages.com/img/2013/09/12//13091206341116079111545068.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/img.php?i=13091206341116079111545068.jpg)
-
Quentin, the silver really looks good! Too bad about the decals, but you get
by that ok. What blue did you use?
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Well, Ernie, is a popular Valentine paint, call "Eau vive", used for common interior woodcraft. i found in an interior design shop!
i started weathering of engine hoods with tints wood (Palissandre and Wengé from Zaïre), very nice products to figure motor oil and smok marks.

let me know if you want some documentation about Nieuport 17, it will be a pleasure to share with you, for a summum build!
-
Looking really good, now Quentin -
The cowling really does look like metal and your weathering is effective too.

thanks Dave,
I'm watching "Flyboys" movie. with our international star, Jean Reno. of course US comments start to say "France is in great danger to be destroy", so, of course, the small squadron of Lafayette fighters will change the end of war! it's a little romantic version!
In fact, durind these epic period, many french ingeniors and manufacturors worked full time to concept best WWI fighters, as Nieuport 17, SPAD VII and XIII.
sometime USA historians forget french army was one of the most powerfull in the world during 19e secular.
We felt in 1940, it is always a shame for all the nation.
And we know also what USA soldiers did to save us in 1944, thanks for ever.
(a service back to help during independance war!)
-
I'm watching "Flyboys" movie.
On behalf of the USA I officially apologize for that terrible, terrible, godawful movie :)
-
Don't be so hard Bob! this movie show many things good! as people are free to join any cause they believe good! defend the old patry of freedom rights, France; it's not so bad reason!
Say France is menace to be invaded by German army is a modern view. French Army was regarded as the most powerfull of the world, until 1940.
USA soldiers coming without official agreement (a shame for USA in 1914; also in 1940) are example of people support freedom everywhere, this really honour of american people.
i'm proud to feel we are a same people, with common values.
About the movie, in my opinion, the bad point is the girl (sorry for) but she's all but not a french girl, about is mouth... we know in a second she's not french... and also a french young woman living in country side had no address in London, that's a dream of american scriptwriter!
but i suspect major american people believe London is the capitale of Europe?
-
I'm watching "Flyboys" movie.
On behalf of the USA I officially apologize for that terrible, terrible, godawful movie :)
..............and on behalf of the completely International WWI Aviation Enthusiasts Community I wish to apologise for that Movie as well; I couldn't begin to tell you the ways...............................!!
Cheers,
Lance :(
-
... ::) At least the aeroplanes were very nice. ;)
Cheers,
Ernie :)

that is the only reason i'm watching thjs movie!

Wow, Francois, your Nieuport is really looks good! Great job!
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Excellent progress Quentin, it is really looking good, well done so far.
Des.
-
thanks Ernie and Des.
I"m surprise myself about the aspect of the plane. He (do you say "he" or "she" or "it" about airplane?) look very used, and this way of weathering don't seem usual in modelworks. in fact Roden kit doesn't invite to do something clean and new, plastic engraving is not very precise, with flat relief, needing to shade more with paint.
so it's going this way, with dirt and used aspect! i have to equalize paint when body and wings will be assembly together.
other reason is i only use paint brush and spray, haven't airbrush!
-
Great work, Quentin. She's coming together very nicely.
Cheers,
Bud
-
thanks Bud
For my friend Ernie, i start a quick tutorial about figure painting, as i use to practice (anyone can complete and comment)
first step is to cement figure on a round support, to be confortable to take it for paint.
first step painting is to shade with a dark color coat. i prefer use the dark tint of the major color i'll apply after, it's better than all black, black isn't a natural color!
so i painted dark blue for uniform, dark brown for face and black for gaiters.
these coats permit also to better see engraving.

Thank you for the information on the figure painting, Francois. Very much appreciated,
and very helpful! I'll be looking forward to more updates. As for aeroplanes, I tend to
refer to them as "she" as I would a ship. Thanks again, my friend.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

I love the prop too, Dave, and I would love to take credit, but it's Quentin's
amazing handiwork, not mine. ;)
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Very nice progress on a challenging kit! Looking forward to the next update.

thanks all for supports! i need it to continue, low wings are too heavy for the small bindings of the kit.
i applied decals, not very dense, and adjust weathering of wings and body.
the scheme is Caporal Six 159 squadron, who landed in ennemy lines and have been captured!
not very kind from Roden to choose this special one, so many others more glorious and nice exist, as the Nungesser Ni 24 bis.

Nicely done, Francois! The blue on the rudder looks to be close to a perfect
match for the decals. You're right...funny they picked a captured aeroplane. ;)
Looking forward to the next update. :)
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Excellent recovery on the rudder, Quentin. Your choice of color is better than Roden's.

Hello gentlemen,

His uniform is starting to look good, Francios. Good luck with your
shows! Looking forward to the next lesson. ;) ;D

Thanks Ernie,
perhaps (it's logical) you believe first coat is not necessary, loocking the new step with matt enamel paint. but It's just provide a little shadow of dark blue, loocking invisible, but in fact giving the deep of the texture. next step will be on the face painting.
(i'm working on a dio of BF 109 G6 with a Mercedes 500 K cabriolet, with 7 figures, a big deal! join you some days!)

this week-end i painted many figures for others building, so i progressed on Charles Guyenemer
and shadow of pleats with a dark blue acrylic. also use brown for bealts and shoes, added wood tint "palissandre".
also painted decorations with pearl gold.
now i have to finish head.

Great work on the uniform, Francois! I'm looking forward to your
technique with his face. Thank you for the update.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

That's coming together nicely, Francois. I like the gold you used for the rank chevrons- it's not too metallic and looks like it's woven, not a metal badge. Gold lace can be difficult to get right, too often it looks too metallic.
