Here are a couple of pictures of the cockpit of my DVII. Still picking out and adding details. This build is a fun challenge and a far cry from figure painting!

Thanks for the kind words. I am going to get the fuselage closed up today and order a figure or two to go with it!

Nice looking pit! I am looking forward to more!!

The cockpit looks great, but now I want to see some of your figures too.
-
I ordered a couple of the Cockpit Wings figures including the pilot designed to sit in the DVII cockpit. I contacted Steve Warrilow (a long time friend) who sculpted the kits and he assured me that with a little wiggle and a slight push forward on the stick and the figure should slide right in. I am leaving the leather cushion out until I see how the pilot fits.
-
As the build starts to come together I wanted a little preview to fuel the fire so I temporarily snapped the lower wing in place.
Still have to do a slight bit of putty work on the top fuselage join but not much.

Hello Kreston:
I am looking forward to seeing your figures and your progress on this kit. What markings are you going to do it in?
Mine is presently stalled on the bench. One of these days.

I am modeling Josef Jacobs DVII before it was painted all black.

Trully amazing Kreston.
Very nice work from you.
Cheers.

A bit more progress...

I have added some oil washes to the lower wing using Sepia and Burnt Umber. I have kept them very subtle. Fuselage has received first coat of black with the metal parts being slightly darker than the fabric. I will gloss coat, add the God of the North Wind decals and weather and then move on.

Very dramatic looking bird!!!

I added the crosses to the upper wing. These are from the Wingnut kit applied over the Aviattic lozenge. They went down without a problem and I didn't use a setting solution. I did hit them with a hairdryer for about a minute and they hugged right down. I applied a glosscote and added oil washes (Sepia and Burnt Umber). They are very subtle but do a nice job of knocking down the white on the crosses. I am very pleased with the Aviattic lozenge. It has been problem free and they are very strong. They fit wonderfully and have really held up to the washes and handling.

That's good to hear as I mull over whose set of lozenge decals to buy.

Still early in the weathering process but I have been working with an oil color called Sepia Extra along with some Titanium White. The Sepia is a dark gray with a bit of a brown tone. I think it helps the black look to scale. My intent is to have a crate that looks like it has been exposed to the elements and not factory fresh. Still have a ways to go!

Good work, Kreston. I was wondering how black is the black going to be?
In the photos, it looks quite grey. I'm assuming it is in fact a bit darker?
Thanks for the update...looking forward to the next one.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Yes, it looks quite gray in the photos. In reality it is more of a dark charcoal gray.
-
Applying the God of the North Wind. This decal required a lot of work to apply and some touch up around the edges will keep me busy! I will let it dry and then shoot it with a glosscote and do some touchups with oil paint.

Very great job!
WNW kits look very good and detailled interior is quite best than on Roden models.

Looking very sharp!!

I envy you; I haven't even begun my D.VII yet, and have no idea when I will.
-
I'm a high school teacher and now that we are back in full swing I am finding myself with less and less time at the workbench. Still plugging away though.
-
Hi Kreston,
Going great guns on the DVII ;)
Keep us updated.
Cheers,
Von Buckle :)

It looks great.
Adam.

Very nice Kreston; the colour scheme you chose is unique, looking forward to more updates.

Dear Kreston
It's fascinating seeing your work in progress and well done so far. I'm particularly interested in your approach to weathering because so far in the 1/48 models I've made I have opted for a factory fresh finish but when I eventually move to 1/32 I think I will be looking to aim for a more service/weather beaten style.
Best wishes
Nigel

Thanks for the comments and I hope to post more pics in the coming days. Something I learned about weathering while painting figures is that "less is more" and I have found it holds true for my DVII as well. I think I was a little heavy handed in my first attempt and have gone back and made it more subtle. I'm not sure how much action Jacobs' DVII saw but assume it wasn't a whole lot.
-
Coming along nicely.
-
Still plugging away at the DVII but don't seem to have as much time at the workbench now that school is in full swing! I am working on the figure that will be standing next to the fuselage. Cockpit Wings kit, sculpted by Steve Warrilow. Still have to finish the face, the buttons, cap and goggles, and put some final touches on the coat and scarf.
(http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/kreston/pilot.jpg) (http://s102.photobucket.com/user/kreston/media/pilot.jpg.html)
-
Nicely done figgy! How are you going to handle the "glass" in the goggles?
-
Fantastic job on the figure, Kreston. Looking forward to the next update
on it/him ;) and also the D.VII.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
I am going paint the lenses the appropriate color and then add a couple coats of a product called Liquin. It dries glossy and will look like the lenses.
-
Couple of quick shots. Sorry for the poor quality. Working on the struts.

Hi Kreston.
The figure it's very nicely done and the D.II it's quite amazing.
Top build there!

Wow! Kreston, the D.VII wings look great in place. You are making great progress!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

The Fokker is looking great with its wings on! Your figure is looking superb!

Hello Kreston - bit late to the party here I am afraid! Just like to say very impressed with this one. Can I ask that when you weather with oils what do you use to dilute them with? I ask because a couple of times recently mine has dried with a slight glossy finish - this was using artists white spirit.
Regards
Andrew
-
Thanks Andrew. Not sure of the brand name but I use an Oderless Paint Thinner. After the oils dry I spray with Testors Dullcote.
-
More progress...
