Title: Eduard 1:48 Morane Saulnier type- L
Post by: JoeDxMB on July 30, 2013, 08:09:43 AM
Yes, I really do build WWI aircraft .  :)

I just started  the Eduard MS L kit and it has some cons along with the pros .  i understand it was one of the fist kits  released by Eduard.

Pros - It has many PE parts, including spoke wheels.....  more PE parts than  plastic parts.
......white metal LeRhone and Gnome engines and a full decal sheet for a few versions
It also ha a few  metal rods and pins.

Con - The main flaw  is the terrible condition of the plastic parts that require much  preparation .

So far, I got the wing in shape and drilled it for rigging and wing struts.
On the plus side, the wing  contained  extremely small, barely noticeable, dimples indicating where the holes go which I prefer as molded  holes are always too big as opposed to drilled holes,
In any event, the kit assumes some modeling experience over  all.

I will be building  a version with a Gnome and spoke wheels.  :)

  Joe,
I'm thrilled to see you take on this older Eduard gem my old friend. Although she's not what I would have expected for your next project. I'm very much looking forward to follow this latest Outstanding build thread.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Joe, Like the others I am looking forward to seeing your build! The original Eduard kits were indeed a crude plastic venue to HIGHLIGHT their PE! I remember well speaking to the reps at the RICHTA show in Chicago, and how eager and enthusiastic they were about improving their product and becoming a Major player in plastic models. This was the Early 90's when I managed a hobby shop. They certainly accomplished their goals!

Very nice choise Joe.

I'll be watching your post for sure. You were right about PE set... it's more metal than plastic! ;D

Cheers

This will be my first reall experience with PE parts besides a few here  and there.

Anything I should know before  I next  tackle the cockpit which  is all PE?
I do have  some Xuron PE scissors  on order along with a basic (cheap) PE bender.

Hello Joe, here is my Morane L. A lot of work, believe me!
Although it is very laborious, it is a beautiful piece of collection.

I have found the PE scissors to be very useful, the PE bender less so. I also use a pair of smooth jawed pliers and the tips of flat headed screwdrivers in various sizes to bend PE.

These pliers are the ones I use: http://www.ottofrei.com/Concave-Convex-Smooth-Jaw-Parallel-Pliers.html

@giodano.......

Thanks for posting  the pics.
That is about exactly as I plan on building mine and it's beautiful. Although, I  do not  think mine will look as great as yours.

It  also clears  my confusion about some things including  how the elevator linkage is routed on the fuselage bottom beneath the LG.

One question........ any  recommendations  on mounting the stab/elevator?  It seems to haven no support and it  would surely break off quickly.
Did you reinforce it in any way?

BTW, I'm glad you painted the edge reinforcements the correct  brown and not black as in most repos and models ,  :)

 @ Rob..........

Thanks for the tips :)

Hello Joe, the stabilizer is indeed very fragile.
I replace the axle by hypodermic needle glued with cyanoacrylate.
But still remained fragile... :(

It looks like the whole tail section will need a bit of "re- engineering".
The rudder has to pivot somewhere for one thing

In any event, I  found the windsock for the L which gives me more answers than I had questions for.    :)

definately a crude kit, i have 2, one of which i will make into a pfalz a.1 . the plastic is strange it has a waxy/soapy texture but it sands o.k. the hotchkiss gun which is made from pe parts is better sourced from a spare from a newer eduard morane "n" or else get one of the beautiful gaspatch ones. the instructions are also a bit vague in spots so study them carefully. like all the old eduard stuff it builds up nice with work and dedication. plus its the only game in town if you want a morane parasol. should be a fun build. i love it when guys build the oldies or scratch stuff. sick of wnw build logs.

"Crude"  is a bit of an understatement except for the PE set that gives the kit real potential.

For the past week I  ave been  preparing the fuselage halves and drilling most of  the necessary holes in them.
I also spent time just to decipher and detect omissions from the instructions .
The kit is definitely not for the novice builder. It demands some scratch building and reworking of some parts.
The windsock certainly  helps.

BTW, I got a fondness  for the MS parasols ever since I  first saw an all original A1 fly back in the '80s
That was an amazing sight! :)
