Title: Eduard's Sopwith Camel F.1 1/48
Post by: Ernie on July 11, 2013, 10:25:20 AM
Hi everyone.
I'm a little embarrassed to submit my current build, having seen
the amazing modeling here.  I have very little experience in the
hobby...more or less at the stage of trying to put things I have
learned into practice.  I chose the Camel even though I have read
it can be a bit of a bear to build.  For me, it is trying to make at least
a fairly decent model, but more importantly to hopefully become a better modeler.
I would appreciate your comments and suggestions.

First I primed everything with Tamiya fine white primer.

Work on the engine comes next.  I managed to break off half the
delicate pushrods from Eduard's engine so I was forced into the world
of scratch-building.  I used 0.4mm brass tubing, CA'd into place.  So far,
so good.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Good choice of subject Ernie, you will have a lot of fun building this kit. The engine looks fine so far, and don't worry about the push rods, I always replace them with brass tube as they look a lot better, looking forward to seeing more updates.

Great start Ernie, never apologise for being a "newbie" to the Hobby. I used to think I was pretty good at this until I started really looking at some of the subjects here. Point is......ENJOY what you do, work at getting better by learning from others, ENJOY what you do, and, ENJOY what you do!
I'll be enjoying following your Build Thread here. Have Fun!
Cheers,
Lance ;)

That engine already looks very good Ernie! :-)
Indeed absolutely nothing to be embarrassed of :-) building scale models
Is a life long learning experience, and that's good because
It keeps this hobby interesting :-)
Will follow this one closely, since I have this kit in my stash too, and I'm curious to see
How it will come together.

All the best

Flip

I like that plane Ernie and your engine looks great so that's a good start. I agree with you that for a beginner (like i am too) it's a bit embarrassing to show once work. But indeed these people on the forum are so kind and helpfull. And they are a great help to get better and to continue to enjoy this hobby. I wish you well with the Camel and I will continue to follow your build.

Very kind regards

Patrick

Thank you for your kind comments, everyone. :)
Just a quick update for now.  I wanted to give the
engine a bit of a used look, so I gave it a little wash
with MIG's #502 grease & oil, which I think look pretty
much just like it.

I think the wash helped bring it to life a bit more. I hope I didn't
overdo it!

More to come, but for now thanks for your interest.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hello Ernie:

I concur, never apologize, everyone here was a newbie at one time and we all build to our own standard.  Your engine looks the business.  I am looking forward to seeing you progress through the build.  I did this scheme using the 1/32nd Academy original issue kit.  The scheme is a bit different from the box art for the Eduard, whcih I wish I would have used, a little more colorful.  So continue to march.

Best

Mark

Hi Ernie.
I'm just a newbie but i'll tell you this... there's nothing to be emabarrassed to. We are all here with the same purpose. We love ww1 aircraft and to share our experience.

It's amazing what we can learn from each other, trying to make that extra step forward.
I'm a braille scaler, but i love what i do... and i love what you guys do. Nothing can take that joy from me.

Besides you already have a great start. Model on and post it in... it will always be a pleasure to share what i know and to learn from all of these great modelers we have here.

Cheers.

Nice work. I'll be following your build with interest as I have a couple of those kits squirreled away for future projects.

thanks for the kind comments :)

next up, the interior.  I thought I took more pictures of the cockpit area,
but apparently they got lost.
The wooden area of the cockpit walls are done with oils in a mahogany
color, the engine area Tamiya flat aluminum, and balance of interior walls
Misterkit (RFC) CDL.  The seat is a mixture of Tamiya NATO Brown & Khaki.

I'm not sure about the seatbelts.  The long ones look too long...I put them
in as per instructions, but they seem like they extend too far.  What do
you think?

The Instrument panel was done in oils, with Airscale instrument decals
and PE Bezels.

Ernie :)

Hi Ernie, my compliments for the work so far, the cockpit looks great, the IP is beautiful

I did not study the Camel yet so I don't know anything about the seatbelt size. Indeed they look a bit long, maybe you could shorten the cable that fixes the belt to the tank behind the pilot's shoulders?

Hi there Ernie.

There's nothing wrong with the seatbelts imo, just looks like that because that seat has a lower back, but if you imagine the pilot seated in it, the belts should go up through the pilots back and then down to its attachment point.

Maybe when the fuselage gets closed you can hang them out of the cockpit!? Anyway...just a though there! :P

Great job in that interior.

Cheers

Thanks for the comments, guys. :)

Pushing on, time to do some serious airbrushing.  I got the fuselage
buttoned up and side woodgrain in oils, so painting the balance of
that part will have to wait until the "wood" dries.

Painting the wings, I tried to make use of the brilliant job that Andrew
did on his FE-2 build.  He really did a masterful job of the CDL.  Thanks Andrew!
Here's the link to his amazing model...
http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=896.0

For me, first job, painting the underside of the wings Misterkit's RFC CDL colour
and after drying, lots of masking of the wings, ribs and spars...

After masking I painted the undersides with Tamiya XF-55 to hopefully show
the shadowy areas between the ribs, etc.  After that, lightening a bit with first colour.
Apologies, had a bit of trouble with the flash here...

Topside of the wings were as follows...first I painted the wings with
Misterkit's  RFC PC-10, then after masking the ribs/spars, I went over it
with Tamiya XF-81, RAF Dark Green.

Here's c couple more pictures of assorted parts.  The Red is Tamiya XF-7,
darkened a smidge with a light grey to tone it down a little.

That's it for now fellows, thanks for looking.

Cheers,
Ernie :)
