Here we go wish me luck :) my second bash at a eduard kit, any glaring errors please feel free to point a total noob in the right direction.
up to date i have built the engine and had a bash at trying to do that laminated effect on the propeller but not too sure about the result!(got four with the kit so i thought it was worth a try)
p.s.sorry for the poor photos - cameras not up to much.

Looking good so far Michael.
Cheers
Pete.

Looks great Michael, especially the prop, very effective :)
Another one in my stash, there's going to be loads of build threads of kits waiting for me to do, for reference. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this build Michael, superb so far....
-
Michael,
Fine first progress my friend. I look forward to following this thread.

Both the engine and the prop look really good. I like the weathering on the engine it is really realistic!Hope to see more;)
-
Lovely work Michael, as the masters above have indicated ;)
Engine looks used and the prop is very effective!
With your photo's, the camera doesn't appear to be focusing on the engine or prop but perhaps the actual shadow (which is sharp compared to the subject)?
The photo of the kit is good - also seems to be focused on a reflection?
Andrew
-
A very good start Michael, the engine looks excellent as does the propeller, I'm looking forward to seeing more progress photos.
Des.

thanks for the kind words and encouragement everyone it does a noob like me no end of good :)
Andrew i see what you mean about the photos - its probably me and not the camera, they seem ok when taken outside though.

Ditto that. Good start .

Your engine has a nice 'used' look about it which always appeals to me. Nice job on the laminated prop too. The smaller they are, the harder they must be to do, but you've made it look easy.
Cheers,
Chris

Good work so far.
Steve

Great job on the engine and prop, Michael. I've seen what you can do with a Week End Edition kit. I know this one will be equally brilliant.
Cheers,
Bud

Nice work on the Engine and Prop Micheal,
The colourings of the Engine look very effective.
Best Regards
Keith
-
I agree.. the Engine and Prop look very good indeed!!
I am certain the rest will come out as great... ;)

The cockpit is looking good! You aren't alone with PE difficulties. I absolutely hate the stuff so I'm going to try the fabric belts from HGW for my S.E.5a.
Cheers,
Chris
-
Michael,
The Mags cockpit looks fantastic my friend. As for PE I prefer to make most of my details myself from plastic, but little I do use it's surly a love-hate relationship. Keep up the fine work my friend.

Folding stuff up for 1/32 is a bit easier but it is still fiddley
Steve
-
just a quick update and a question if i may :)
got the two halfs together and painted, question is whats the best way to go about painting the leather lip around the cockpit?
any advice and tips will be more than welcome on this ;)

Michael,
If you mean what color? I use Humbrol 62 Leather followed by an over spray of Tamiya's clear orange. Great progress my friend.

no sorry :-[, my fault what i meant to ask is how you go about getting a clean line should i mask or paint it freehand? with it being such a complicated shape.
cheers
michael
-
Michael,
I paint mine free hand with a 5/0 brush. I do this usally in sections one at a time. It may help you to tape the closed fuselage to your work space or cutting pad to hold it in position. Support your brush hand by laying it atop the other hand to steady your brush. From there just take your time and use short strokes. I know it sounds difficult but it's really not hard to do at all. I hope this helps you out a bit.

Gregory Jouette

I'm with Greg here, just take it easy, and it'll probably look just fine. To be on the safe side, you might clear the area first with Future (or an acrylic clear), then you can just wipe away any errors with a thinner damped brush.
-
I like to use the figure painting approach. Do a base coat in acril paints, dont get too close to the edges then over paint with oils. I find oils easier to control and glide off the brush easier to get sharp edges. You can also work them to get that leathery look. Its pretty much near to last thing on the list to do though.

thanks for the tips guys much appreciated :)

Nice looking model. I almost got this kit the other day, in the end I got a Sopwith Camel instead. :)
It looks like I should get one of these as well.
You're making a nice job of it.
-
She's coming along beautifully, Michael.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks for the kind words everyone!
got the engine fitted, and a couple of coats of matt varnish on the plane. i love the fact that a lot of the engine can still be seen and all the hard work is not hidden from view.

Michael,
Outstanding works my friend. Is that the kit stock radiator or have you modified it? Either way I love how the meshed front appears.

Beautiful, I've been tempted to drop down to 1/48th to build one or two of these and your excellent example isnt making it easy to resist.
Keith

Nice work!!!
Steve
-
Interesting model. I may have to get one for myself, (eventually).
-
i like the shading on the sheet metal cowling panels. i made one just like it (i have the dual combo) i thought it would look neat compared to all my lozenge and bright colored dvii fokkers. i am also gonna do the camo czech one someday. nice job!
-
I've pondered one of these, but was never sure. But now I've seen your's I'm putting one on my wish list. Looking good.
Ken

thanks for the comments everyone they are much appreciated and give a noob like me a little boost in confidence :)
Hi Greg, yea the radiator is the kit supplied part, i just painted it aluminium and gave it a wash of black oil paint. chuffed you like it!
cheers
michael
-
I love your work on this plane, did you use some shading beside the seat belt to make them more evident with respect to the seat they lay on?
-
Hi Andonio, cheers for the thumbs up :)
as for the seat belts thats another story :-\
i got the p.e. kit from eduard with this kit and the seat belts are part of that set.
to be honest i made a pigs ear fitting them, they dont look too bad from a distance but up close its a horror story :o
cheers
michael

not far to go now just a few bits and bobs to finish off.
i was hoping to get finished this week but i have gone and lost my glasses >:(

Michael, a model, to my (humble) opinion, is not something that should be regarded through a microscope, the important thing to me is that when you look at it it seems real, and it doesn't matter if a louver is 1 mm longer than in the real plane.
Should one take part to a contest, well the story might change, but in all the other cases microscopic details don't matter.
So I keep my thumb up for your really good realization...

Looking very schmick Michael :)
Thumbs up from me as well!!
