Here is the start of this nice kit. I got it at a model show for $5!!! ;D

Hello All,
Not much, but a bit more done tonight. This thing seems to line up just right. The tails will be square and true with little playing around. The forward machine gun looks a little stunted to me...we'll see.

What you can't see in the photos are the interior bulk heads which have been trimmed and fit nicely. Tomorrow I'll start putting in some framework, seats and some more interior bits and pieces. This thing looks so odd next to the Bristol of the same scale. The fuselage is sooooo short!! Can't wait until they are both done.

Its a really nice mould, surface detail is restrained and good plastic. These Sierra Scale kits are excellent, and the finished kit will be a treat. I've recently got their 1:48 UFAG C.I, good kit too.

Looking great! I have Sierra scales Rumpler C1. I started it years ago and stopped after getting the fuselage cut out and sanded. All of the vac builds recently are making it tempting to go back to a couple of OLD projects

Finally something new to report. Hooorrraayyyyy!!! :o ;D ;D
Now that some other projects are done, I'm getting back into this nice little kit. Everything has been shaped and sanded, upper and lower wing halves glued, dihedral set and all holes for struts and rigging drilled. Next I'll start adding the interior tubular steel. Should go together pretty well. So far, the fit is really nice.

All,
A bit more done on the inside. I used an old seat and drilled holes in it. I added some bits and bobs based on the photos I have including some radio equipment, a pump in the observer's area (?), some extra tubing in the back and a box on the right side that I think is the "bombay". I added some rudder pedals and that's it for now. Oh...I also got the engine fitted and stole a Spandau from an Eduard Pflatz.
I can't get used to how big this thing is since I'm fresh off lots of 1/72nd material. I feel like I can put working instruments in this thing! :o
The pilot's area needs some work but I don't know what style of joystick he would have used...I can't tell if it's a Halberstadt type, a Rumpler wheel or a spade grip like a Fokker. I need to do some more research.
Anyway, this one is really cute and is coming together quite well. A bit more and some seat belts and she is ready to paint and close up.

Nice interior, should be a beauty once finished. I had to send a comment after reading your comment on working and getting more detail out of 1:48 Scale vs the "Braille Scale" as someone recently labelled it; this old "f..t" moved up to 1:32 for the same reason. Barring laser eye surgury maybe my moniker should be changed?!

I got a bit done on the interior by painting things and adding belts. Now, all I need to do is close her up and then start working on the cabane and landing gear struts for test fitting. Should go well. It's a really nice little kit.
I decided to hedge my bets and make a sort of spade grip for the pilot. I really couldn't see any good shots of the pilot's controls but I don't think there was a Rumpler wheel. The only data I have for a circular grip was from the sprue shot of a resin kit of a related AEG so my research is not what you'd call iron clad.
However, it looks pretty nice to me.

The G.IV had a round "steering wheel" type. Not sure if this was standard AEG, or just because it was a bigger machine....

Hello All,
I got more done on the old girl. I'm really liking it and the kit is fitting just great. I tacked on the tails, added a skid, rudder control horns and obviously closed her up. I used a simple jig to align the wings and cemented in the cabanes...they are not attached to the top wing yet. I also added the start of the radiator and landing gear/wheels. You can also see the gas tank filler cap out of the left fuselage side. The hard part is done...now I can fill some seams, add anchors for my eventual turnbuckles, paint and start assembling. ;D
A great kit and if you have been afraid of vacs, you really can't go wrong with one of these old Sierra Scales. I want them ALL!!! :o

Even more done. I got some brown sprayed around the spinach green blotches. Looks more like a WWII German tank but I think I like it. It will look pretty cool once weathered...and it's darn unique! ::)
I also started painting on the markings. They are coming along well but sloooooowwwwwly.

Hi everyone. It's been a while but lots of work (real work :'() and models too!
Here is a bit more on the ol' AEG. I crushed some 1/16th aluminum tubing just a bit in a vice and used this as strut material. An experiment but I think it looks fine in this scale.
I'll paint them light blue and start rigging soon! Can't wait. This thing hardly looks like a vac anymore. I want to take a shot of it next to my Bristol to compare sizes and shapes. It's a pretty cool plane!

Hi All,
She's rigged except for the aileron bell cranks and connections. I used EZ line and simple stretched sprue glued to the ends of the lines and glued into pre-drilled holes as an experiment for turnbuckles. The last time I made these in 1/48th with tiny loops and threading line through tiny tubes, they seemed too large to me. Most of the pictures I see indicate the turnbuckles are just visible as slightly thicker ends to the rigging. I love that built up effect in 1/32nd, but I don't have the practice yet to pull it off in 1/48th...yet ;)
Anyway, she needs windshields, rear gun, a bit more weathering and maybe some odd details here and there but it's close.

Great work Dan! :D. Your skills with vac kits are impressive. I, too, love that Middle East paint scheme. Can you tell us more about the aircraft, unit, operational service, etc. (in case I missed it earlier in this thread :))? Thanks for sharing this great and unique model.

It's a really nice kit. Very delicate in execution and really looks nice next to a Bristol two seater.
Bob: I didn't do much research into a particular aircraft but really liked the middle east scheme I saw on several shots in the Windsock Datafile on the AEG. Colors are completely speculative but make sense to me since all those Me-109s and 110s had similar camo in the desert in WWII. In the photos, there is definitely a light area with darker splotches and in a close up of a crashed example, there seems to be (brush applied) darker outlining around the...what I'm calling...spinach pattern. That's why I did the overall sand/spinach and outlined in a darker brown.
So...it is all "Luft '17" but I like it anyway.

Prop, radiator pipes, exhausts, aileron bell cranks and gunner's machine gun all added. The gun still needs a black wash and some dry brushing. I used the kit gun since I wanted to try and use as many kit parts as possible. It's a bit clunky and took 10 years to clean up but it looks good. It will look better when done and I'll look around for a photoetch site if I can find one!
