Hello Friends,
I've been working on this kit for about a month now and figured I would share some photos of the interior and associated bits. I used the RB Productions pilot harness, combined the BarracudaCast manifold with the piping from the kit, and opted for the Taurus Models plugs, manifold, valves, springs, lifters, and manifold nuts. Early on, I was really in the mood to work with my hands and decided to use Prismacolor pencils to simulate the interior wood grain. The base color was Floquil Antique White, later varnished over with a thinned 1:1 mixture of their SP Armor Yellow and Ochre. Based on the photos in the instructions, I tried to imagine what the interior green color from the unrestored AWM machine might have looked like nearly a century ago, prior to the amber-tinted protective varnish, and came up with this green similar to some of the colors used in WW2 allied aircraft. Certainly doesn't match any of the colors generally accepted in our community, but I like it :o. Will post more photos soon- comments and constructive criticism are always greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the flightline Vickers.
Theres never enough Albatri here for me. The wood looks very good, Nice light warm tone. Those harness straps look the business.
Now I want to continue with my (shelved while I mess with Fokkers)D.V build back on the bench.

You have made an excellent start with your Albatros, the wood tonings are very good and the interior details are very well done. The engine has turned out beautiful, all those little bits and pieces certainly make a difference to the look of the engine, and the seat belts are very realistic. Well done so far and I look forward to seeing more of this build.

Vickers,
Outstanding works in progress my friend. Excellent woodworks and details. Keep up the great works.

Thanks for your comments, you guys. Although I've been inspired by builds on this forum and Des' Jasta 5 machine on the site, I decided not attempt much scratch detailing since I feared creating fit and alignment conflicts and frankly my scratchbuilding skills aren't up to it. I do enjoy comparing aftermarket products to the kit parts and figuring out which I should use and engaging the lighter duty challenges of adding some to the build.
Here's another batch of photos showing the results I got while trying out the Pheon fitted Flugstoff decals and wood grain masks from Radu Brinzan. You can see that my attempt to use a dark grey and pink preshade under the decals didn't work since it wasn't strong enough in contrast to show through. I will have to try a surface treatment to achieve the tonal effects I'm looking for. Although the oft-published photo this machine sitting next to its Fokker counterpart suggest that it wore a medium finish, such as a light walnut stain, I opted for a somewhat opaque "honey lemon" varnish. I used Floquil SP Armor Yellow mixed 4:1 with RLM 04 Yellow and that 1:1 with Floquil Clear, then thinned. (Except for the one panel that is so much darker than the rest (repairs?) that I decided to speculate that it may have been pulled from a red mahogany stained hangar queen.) The fuselage base color was Floquil Butternut mixed 2:1 with Antique White, the lighter grain is WEM Nocciola Chiarro and the darker is WEM Marrone Mimetico #4. The black & white Jasta 12 markings and Neckel's chevrons were simply masked and painted in the conventional manner; Reefer White from Floquil, Aircraft IP Black from Model Master, and Russian WW2 Light Grey from Floquil's old military flats line.

This has been one fun build so far and I can see why so many WW1 modelers are building successive WNW kits, since I'm already poring over the others in my stash to figure out which will be next.

Wow!! Those are two massive build updates!! Great work and a nice scheme.
Steve

You have chosen a very nice scheme. Apart from the fact, that your "Albatros-green" looks more like Zincchromate (which is of absolutely no importance, as you like it as it is), this is a very clean build. Impressive.

Wow ............ GREAT job. What a couple of updates, epic in scale and achievement. Those really are informative postings and visually make for an impressive resource.
I'm really impressed by the exterior panels and their graining ................ well done that man.

Hello Vickers:
You are doing fantastic work on the Albatros. Your finish on the fuselage is quite stunning, you seem to have captured that warm honey tone of the Albatros finish. The engine looks like an engine. Grimy, a bit dusty and used. I like the lozenge seat back panel as well, a nice touch. Your comments and photos are informative and a good reference for others working on this kit. I am going to have to pop for the Radu wood grain stencils.
Outstanding work all around. So welcome aboard and keep those updates coming.

Hi Vickers, great job so far, did you use the Taurus timing gear on your engine build? Several of us on the forum have tried it and found it to be 1mm too long.
Cheers
Pete.

Wow, Vicker's! You've made phenomenal progress over the last 24 hours! ;) This is shaping up to be an extraordinary beauty. Your cockpit and engine work are brilliant and I really like the way your wood grain turned out.
Cheers,
Bud

Ooh, that wood looks really sharp. How does Radu's wood template work? I thought about getting them, but opted for decals for the time being.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Bud, I must confess that I've been working on this one since early February and taking photos, but have been negligent in getting them posted.
Kinnies, the RB masks are pretty easy to use- I just taped off every other panel and selected different areas of the p/e mask to spray through. The colors I used actually laid down more dark and intense than I'd intended, so the varnish over them had to be laid on a little bit more opaque than I planned. Next time, I will lighten and thin the paints a bit more.
-
Sorry for chiming in so late. Your DV is a stunning build from the inside out. Great work on the added interior details, your wood grain, the overall painting, and of course the masked markings!

Vickers,
That wood grain effect and the overall tone are stunning; I have the templates and having seen your work here I'll definitely be using them. Beautiful Alby in the works here, looking forward to more.

Thanks for the comments, friends. This update will bring the photos currrent. The lower wings, landing gear, ailerons, and Tiger Models exhaust pipe have been attached and some Tamiya powders applied for initial highights and toning down some of the black areas:

Lovely work so far Vickers, the woodwork on the fuse has turned out well.

The wood on the fuselage has turned out extremely well, it is a lovely colour. Could you tell me what paint you used for the black on the tail and the nose of the aircraft, it looks really good.
Des.
-
Thanks again, guys. Des, normally I prefer Floquil's Engine Black from their R/R colors line. However, I ran out recently so I used Model Master Aircraft IP Black on this one. It does the job, but I find it a little tricky to thin and doesn't perform as smoothly through the airbrush as the Floquil. Doesn't brush on very well, either.
-
Wow, that wood is really the dog's danglies. What a nice job.
The work posted on here is is so impressive. I might just take up knitting...
Cheers,
John

A beautiful looking bird and no mistake ;)
Great job thus far!

Thanks again for the kind appraisals of my efforts, Friends. I'm currently into the rigging, definitely not the time to be getting the coffee shakes!
-
This one is getting together into a fantastic Albatros model! I love these natural wood fuselages with those black-white personal markings. Looks great!
-
I just tuned in, and in a word, very nice work, and I really like the woodgrain through the paint you've achieved.
-
Great work. Looking forward to the next installment.

This is a beautiful build so far. I like the woodwork on your model and found the Radu Brinzan website. It seems a good idea, judging from your result to use these. It seems to me easier than the decal method, although there are excellent results achieved here too.
There are so many beautiful Albatros schemes on this forum, that I start to get tempted to build one myself.
regards,
Ivo

Thanks again for your comments! I finished the rigging on the Albatros last night, using Bob's Buckles for the eyelets, Gaspatch Turnbuckles, and EZ Line. I haven't had a chance to order the new Gaspatch Albatros style, so I made do with their standard version. That evolution went quite quickly, but I did make a mistake on the stays that run from the nose to the bases of the vee struts in that the turnbuckle should be at the nose. I was gleefully attaching turnbuckles to the struts and forgot about that- they're tightly clustered and I fear an attempt to correct that would result in damage, so I'll live with the error.
A couple of photos show the homemade device that I use to check alignments, just a piece of card paper with one vertical and a series of horizontal lines. It was not easy to steady the camera though, so my vantage point was slightly left of the model and the optics caused some paralax. Everything lined up pretty nicely with little help from me, since I don't have an assembly jig- the credit must go to WNW for their precision in design and production.
Although I was quite pleased with the upper wing and landing gear alignment, the gear legs were very wobbly and the model leaned to starboard by about 3 degrees. I used stiff .012 brass wire for the undercarriage rigging to correct the tilt by making the left wire about .75mm longer than the right and now the gear is solid. A short 60-degree bend into the fuselage to secure that end while the other abutts in a depression on the gear leg. I didn't actually measure the wires, opting intead for the "cut it close then test, trim back, and repeat as necessary" method and got lucky on the first go. I opted to attach everything raw, so willl have to paint all of the rigging bits in situ.
The spandaus are enhanced with the metal parts from Master Model, using the WNW parts for the breech. So, here are the latest pics:

There have been some fiddly moments and I'll have to touch up a few small chips in the paint, but I've really enjoyed this build.

Great work. Nice simple jig for eyeballing alignment. I used to use the straight edge of my workbench to check straightness etc but that paper/lines idea is too easy to pass up!! Thanx!!!

Lovely build, the colour scheme looks great, well done Vickers.

Phenomenal job all around, Vickers. Hard to believe it's you first WNW build. Excellent rigging.

Wow! ;D You have really done a fantastic job with this! Very impressive! I'm in the process of building my first WnW Alby D.V as well and this thread will help tremendously. I look forward to reading many more build logs from you :) My only regret is that I just found it today and not sooner.
-
Hello Vickers:
Very nicely done. Your simple parrallel line alignment chart is brilliant. You may want to go back and align your turnbuckles so the angle of the turnbuckle is the same as the angle of the rigging, if that is possible. This really turned out nice your wood grain is really nice.
Looking forward to more of your build logs.

Very nicely done sir. The transluscent woodgrain thing is very real looking. I have an Albie to try that on.

Very nice job. Great paint scheme.
-
Great looking model. I have Radu's woodgrain masks and am waiting to try them out. You did
a beautiful job with them. Encourages me to try them sooner, rather than later. Also one of
my favorite schemes. I did the same one years ago on a 1/48th Eduard model.
Thanks for posting, Tim P.
-
Thanks, mates! Tim, you may have noted that even though I thinned my paints for the brown and reddish woodgrains they still came out quite dark and distinct. So, I had to tint my varnish a bit more opaque and lay it on thicker than intended. It still turned out golden yellow, but a bit more intense than I was after. Depending on which of the varnish tones you're after (clear, honey yellow, or red-brown, I'd recommend a test on scrap plastic with the same base coat you intend to use on the model to ensure that you avoid the problem. The masks seem to be fairly resilient and cleaned up very well with just a dip in thinner, so I will certainly use them again on my D-III, but I will definitely test my grain colors before commiting mask to model.
-
Duh, just found this, seems to have all happened while I was traveling... lovely build Vickers!!!

An outstanding project Vickers, you are doing an excellent job with this build, the paintwork and decal application is superb and the rigging looks great, well done for your first WnW build.
