Title: Der Kampfflieger Caproni Ca.3 1/72nd
Post by: NinetythirdLiberator on May 26, 2026, 02:22:09 PM
All,

Just started this one...one of my favorites!

I'm trying to leave mods to a minimum but I know I'll want to change some things.  It'll look cool next to the Gotha as well!

I've only cut some things out and started the main bathtub.  Added the fuel tanks and only did the slight mod of giving it a 1/32nd balsa floor backing and the same for the rear engine mount.  Less flimsy that way.  Looking nice so far.

Onward...Dogs Body Dan

:o Wowzer Dan - That's going to be quite an impressive model when built and I'm looking forward to following your progression

It will be interesting to see how you handle the complexity of this one in paper..... You like a challenge!

Thanks, Folks!  It is a strangely elegant plane (in my opinion, anyway) and has lots of rigging, drag, two booms and three rudders.  What's not to like!

Plus, it was usually a tail-sitter which will make my life easier...

I did some more basic cockpit with seats and instruments.  I also added a thin balsa floor to the nacelles and got them almost done.

So far, so good!

Thanks, Guys...

A bit more.  It sort of fell together and this makes it easier to handle in some ways.  I put a thin piece of 1/32nd balsa (sanded a bit) in the bottom wing and the stab just for a bit of strength.  I'm amazed by the alignment which seems darn good so far.  The middle tub is just sitting there for show at this point.  Rigging will be a blast!

More soon...Dan

Awesome work , she is going to be a pretty big size when finished .

Have always wanted to build this type in 48 scale ....maybe one day .

Life is finally got out of the way for a bit so I got all three engines installed as well as the nacelle rads and some piping for them.  Still figuring stuff out and more interior to go but I can't wait to start the struttery!

More soon...Dan

P.S. Alexis:  This download came with a 1/48th version.  Maybe someday!

Good to see some progress here, the engines look good in situ.

Thanks, Nigel!   ;D

I can't wait to start rigging as that will really make it look busy.  Today I'll add some more interior and start struts.  Stay tuned....

Tonight I got the 3-D yokes made from pulled plastic sprue and thin fuse wire as well as the pulled sprue exhausts.  I also added some more piping for the rear engine but it's just a best guess.  I need seat belts and then I'll start some fuselage rigging and then struts.  Lots of control cables that head out from the center fuse to the tails.

I got the main struts on, tail control horns and after some head scratching, the locations for rudder and elevator pulleys and control cables.  I think this is the beginning of rigging.  Next I'll start work on the "cabane" rigging and then put on the top wing.  Moving right along, now...Dan  ;D

For a complex and fragile build this seems to be going remarkably well - perhaps I shouldn't tempt fate..... She is looking every inch the Caproni, those open space are being nicely filled.

Much appreciated, Nigel.  I think there is more rigging to be added, but I may stop the interior part for now.

Tonight I got the rest of the inner rigging done along with some more pulleys added.  I'll either do the front gunner's position next or the top wing.  We'll see.  Saving the rear gunner trapeze for after the top wing is secured.

Thanks for looking...Dan

It's going well but the rear gunner trapeze sounds like it might be a challenge...... The additional rigging has gone on very nicely.

Thanks Nigel and Tim!

It's nothing next to your amazing 72nd bombers, Tim.  But it's good enough for the girls I date!  ;D

Here it is with all the interplane struts installed.  Rigging fest next...Dan

Thanks, Everybody!

Well...the wings are fully rigged.  Next will be some more control rigging and I gotta finish the tail rigging too.  Then I'll tackle the cool rear gunners position.  Cool beans...Dank

I just finished all the rigging tonight including all the nose gear pulleys and various anti-drag wires etc.  I need some touch-up on those pulleys under the nose that cross around the nose gear.  Don't look too close or you'll see unsightly rigging tails!  I'm glad I made the aileron cables "3-D" as that adds a lot.  I need to add props, the main wheels and the rear gunner's position which will require some head scratching.  Also, the kit lacks wing skids so I'll scratch those.  Another few nights and she should be done!

Thanks for looking,
Dan
