Title: 1/32 Fokker EV MikroMir/Aviattic
Post by: NigelR on March 05, 2026, 11:45:05 PM
I'm back to building aircraft after a break for some figure painting. My current project is a 1/32 Fokker EV using the MikroMir kit with the full Aviattic upgrade set. I'll be doing this as the Jasta 8 aircraft with the snake down the side using the Pheon decals set.

I've built the Oberursel, which is a GasPatch 3D printed item (I understand Aviattic will soon be producing their own Oberursel):

I've also started work on the wing. Aviattic have produced some nice decals with a combination of the plywood panels and the segmented staining. I need to touch up the underside wing in a few places and I plan to add a bit more streaking to tie everything together. But here's where we are so far:

The Aviattic set includes new 3D printed struts to replace the notoriously inadequate MikroMir items. This set includes a support for the leading strut in the tripod arrangement that you have to insert into the fuselage. It's very clever but does require a fair bit of sanding and filling:

Great start on this one Nigel, I'm not sure I've ever seen the MicroMir kit built up (or did Dave build one at some point?) :-\
Those decals look really good to my eyes. I especially like the plywood effect showing under the thin stain layer.

I've got plenty of filler around if you run out on the fuselage which looks like it'll be a fair bit of work  ;)

Well after touching up the few spots on the wing where there were noticeable joins in the decals, I decided the touchups were too noticeable. So I decided to add some oil paint streaking to cover these and pull everything together. I spent many a happy hour looking at all the pictures of EV wing streaking I could find and decided they varied from almost opaque to quite highly streaked, sometimes with no "segmentation" of the different colours obvious, through to clearly segmented with very little streaking showing. The Achim Engels EV reproduction shows very little evidence of streaking. So I decided to go for a subtle streaking effect to keep the lovely panelling in the decals still visible but to hopefully cover up the acrylic touchups.

I broke out the oil paints and after a lot of colour mixing I set to work. Here's the palette set up for the greeny-blue:

I applied the oil paint in uneven streaks and then worked it out with a blending brush lightly moistened with white spirit. Here's a closeup - the blue segment to the right has been fully brushed out while on the left hand blue segment the oil paint has been applied but not yet brushed out (I haven't done anything on the pinky-red area yet):

The effect is quite subtle (it's a little more obvious in real life) but works well. It hides any touch ups and just gives a slightly more streaky finish without hiding the lovely detail in the decals.

That looks great Nigel.  8)
I like subtle and that seems just enough to suggest the streaking and tie in with references and not look over the top 'look at me being clever with paint'

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like the effect. The only problem is that it's added a few days to the build as I know have to wait for the oils to dry before I can do the upper wing, then more oils drying etc etc.....

It does mean I can crack on with the interior and fuselage. The cockpit tub is a single 3D printed item which includes many details like the compass. I have mixed emotions about this - it's a fabulously detailed casting but it is a bu**er to paint. Let's see how we get on.....

Hi Nigel,

Glad to see you doing this. Forewarned is forearmed, and this'n is high up the list for me once the Capronis are under control. (As minor practice/light relief I'm also doing an M-1 British sub by the same people, but try hard as I might can find no wings in the box, which puts it outside the scope of this forum).

Paul.

Good news: we have the WW1 Armour, Artillery, Vehicles, dioramas, associated figures and Ships (https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?board=94.0) forum for precisely this reason!

I dunno, just look away for 10 years and they change things. (Or I'm even less attentive than I thought I was).  Right, remedial snooping about mode, engaging. Thanks for the info.

There's definitely a few things to be aware of with this kit, it's really very nice but it's more challenging than the Nieuport 28 IMO. I'll definitely highlight some of the things to watch out for.....

Great progress, and very fine results on the streaking nightmare ;-)
Will be watching with great interest.

Sadly this build is now on hold. Having spent the best part of a week getting all of the wing streaking looking really good, I applied the Pheon decals crosses on the upper and lower wings. Stupidly I didn't check my references but went by the Pheon decals colour guide. Unfortunately the Pheon decals crosses are too big, which means they have ended up in the wrong position on the wing and also want to wrap around so the top and bottom crosses join up. Photographs of the plane I am modelling clearly show that the upper and lower crosses did not wrap around and join up. As I am a complete rivet counter I am not happy with this, so this build is going on the shelf for now.

She will be resurrected at some point as a Polish machine but this will be later in the year. I'm going to build a CSM Italian Nieuport 11 as a nice palate cleanser instead!

Ah bugger  :o

That's a shame Nigel, but good idea to pop it to one side and have a go at something guaranteed to come out well.

Very sorry to hear Nigel. It was coming along so nicely.  I do hope you find the Mojo to complete it in some fashion.

Chiming in late as usual, but...sorry to hear about this build falling into a pickle, Nigel. It was looking good, so I hope you're able to resurrect it some time in the future. You have strong principles when it come to matching references...very admirable  ;)
Cheers,
Gary

Thanks Paul, Tim and Gary - I've ordered some new Polish decals (the Model-Maker ones) so this will be resurrected at some point.

That's a very nice way of describing a rivet counter...... ;) ;D I am currently spending hours anguishing over the colour to paint the metalwork the Italian Nieuport 11.....

As a fellow rivet counter Nigel, I feel your pain. I have re-shelved many a project because perfection could not be achieved... then I simply chalk it down to experience and try and finish it anyways :) Would be a shame to not see this one completed, even if there is a little niggling aspect about the build. Heck, most of my builds are filled with niggles!  ;D

Cheers,

BC

Don't worry, it will be resurrected. I bought two of the Aviattic kits with the intention of doing German and Polish versions, I shall just take what I have done so far and combine it with elements of the second kit (like the wing) to create a Polish version. I have the Model-Maker decals which gives me more options for Polish machines as well. But it won't be until later in the year.....
