Hi all,
As the Sopwith 1.B2 model is close to being complete, I thought I'd start on the next model.
The 'Wingnut Wings' Jeannin Stahltaube, Serial No: A.283/14 at Aldershof-Johannisthal aerodrome during 1915.
This aircraft was normally doped with German Field Grey.
However, it seems this aircraft had not yet had its wings doped, so were still Clear Doped Lined (CDL),

Great choice Mike. It's one of the few WNW kits I don't have that I would be interested to get. Looking forward to this one.
-
Unusual looking scheme so should stand out nicely. I'm a sucker for all those wire wheels and wires so bring it on ;D
Paul
-
Such a nice subject, Mike. I chose that one a while ago when I built mine because of the scheme of the wings & fuselage. Such a tricky exercise in rigging, but worth it in the end! Looking forward to seeing how you approach this one.
Cheers,
Gary
-
Hi Mike, very excited to see you build this one too. The Taubes always vary in colour and appearance, but this one has the nicest looking engine and cowling of the lot. :)
-
Hi all,
Some progress on the model.
General painting was done using 'Tamiya' acrylic paints thinned with Mr. Hobby self-levelling thinners (MLT).
The weathering is Flory Models Dark Dirt fine clay wash.
The wood effect was done using brushed Windsor and Newton Griffin Alkyd oil paint (Raw Sienna).
The rigging is 0.08 and 0.12 mm diameter mono-filament with blackened 0.4 and 0.5 mm diameter Brass tube (Albion Alloy's).
The rigging includes fuselage crossed bracing wires, wing warp control cables and tail warp control cables.
Next is to complete the pilot and observers lap belts and the engine, so that the fuselage can be closed up,

Excellent start. There's a lot of rigging on the inside of this plane, let alone on the outside!
-
Hi all,
Here's the basic engine completed.
I've added spark plugs from blackened 0.5 mm diameter Brass tube.
The ignition leads are 0.2 mm diameter lead wire from PlusModel.
Weathering is Flory Models Dark Dirt wash and AK Interactive Kerosene wash,
Mike

Great work on that lovely kit.
-
Hi all,
The fuselage is ready to be closed up.
This when most of the work done will no longer be visible - hey ho.
I've added the kit supplied photo-etch seat belts and basic engine fuel supply pipes from 0.5 mm diameter lead wire.
Also basic spark advance and throttle controls from 0.3 mm diameter Nickel-Silver tube.
These are from the pilot's cockpit to the engine carburettor and left magneto (right will not be seen).
Once I've cleaned up the fuselage seam joints, I'll final rig the crossed bracing wires at the sides of the engine bay.
These were left loose as the frames are flexible and fragile, so can easily be damaged.
They are more rigid once the fuselage halves have been joined.

That's a fine looking engine and interior Mike, all beautifully done. And it's coming together really quickly!
-
Hi all,
The fuselage is now closed up.
Next is to prepare the wings, tail and associated pylons, before I can prepare for their rigging,

Hi all,
Some progress on the wings.
1. Airbrushed both wings with Mr. Surfacer Grey (1500) thinned 50/50% with Self Levelling Thinners (400).
2. Airbrushed with MRP Clear Doped Linen (MRP-256).
3. Primary and intermediate spars masked then airbrush with MRP Khaki Green 3/G3 (MRP-333).
4. Masking removed and three interconnecting spars masked.
5. Three intermediate spars airbrushed with MRP Khaki Green 3/G3 (MRP-333).
6. Masking removed.
7. Airbrushed with MRP Clear Doped Linen (MRP-256) to fade and blend pre-shading.
8. 'Tamiya' sanding paper 300 used to sand away the paint from the wing war Bamboo extensions to make them more prominent.
9. Finally, temporary pieces of Aviattic Clear Doped Linen (CDL) aged varnished clear backed (ATT32094) decal applied to check effect.
So now it's a similar process on the fuselage and tail unit, which will be covered with Aviattic German Feldgrau Medium Grey/Green clear backed (ATT32228) decal.

Hi all,
The fuselage and tail unit have been pre-shaded.
They were prepared using the same process for the wings.
Next step is to apply the decals.
Fuselage and tail unit - Aviattic German Feldgrau Medium Grey/Green clear backed (ATT32228),
Wings - Aviattic Clear Doped Linen aged varnished clear backed (ATT32094).

Hi all,
The decals have now been applied.
I found the kit decals to be very brittle and several cracked during application.
I'm not sure if it was the age of the kit decals or they had the same problem as the Wingnut Wings Sopwith Camel decals.
They suffered from a lack of plasticizer, which made them brittle.
There is one more step before fitting the wings and weathering.
That is to apply the turned metal finish on the fuselage front panels,
Mike.

I look away for 5 seconds and you turn up with a great build again Mike.
I've always loved the Taubes, and this is a great example. Beautiful!

Hi all,
I chose to replace the kit supplied wheels with ?Copper State Models? German 810x125 spoked wheels (A32-040).
This required cutting away the axle ends and drilling a 0.6 mm diameter hole into the axle ends.
Then inserting a 0.6 mm Brass rod into the holes.
Progressively larger tubes were added to increase the diameter to 1.6 mm, which allowed the wheels to be located firmly,

Those wheels look fantastic. This is going to be a beauty!
-
Hi all,
I've applied subtle weathering to the fuselage, tail and wings.
An application of 'Flory Models' Dark Dirt fine clay wash.
Edges were highlighted using sponged on 'Tamiya' Weathering Master Set A (Mud).
Oil/fuel stain to the lower, forward fuselage was sponged 'Tamiya' Weathering Master Set D (Oil Stain).
The wheel tyres are light grey primer with sponged on 'Tamiya' Weathering Master Set A (Mud).
The wheel spokes is airbrush 'Alclad' Steel (ALC-112),

She is indeed a beauty! The combination of the decals, underpainting and weathering looks superb. The mud on the tyres looks great. I've recently just started using the Tamiya weathering master sets - I've had one for many years but only recently used it and was quite impressed. Apparently they are similar in composition to eye makeup...... However, my face does not need any additional weathering ;)

Hi all,
The figures for this model are painted.
The figures are from Copper State Models:
Standing German airman (F32-040),
Gotha bomber German crew member N.2 (F32-010),
German ground crewman N.1 (F32-012).
Painted using Citadel water based and Tamiya acrylics.

Hi all,
This aircraft had a type of turning finish applied to the fuselage forward panels.
Wingnut Wings hints and tips suggest base coating with Tamiya Chrome (X11).
Then brush paint the patch outlines with Aluminium (X16).
Although other modellers have used this method to great effect, I personally found it tricky to achieve a satisfactory effect.
Instead, I base coated with Mr. Colour Super Metallic 2 (Super Iron 2 - SM203).
I then brush painted the patches using Abteilung 502 Liquid Mask (ABT115).
Then airbrushed with Mr. Colour Super Metallic 2 (Super Chrome Silver 2 - SM206).
Once dry I rubbed off the mask patches to reveal the metal patch colour.
Airbrushed with Tamiya Semi-Matte clear coat (X35) prior to weathering,
Mike

Doing this kind of effect with a brush and keeping it consistent can be challenging, and your approach has worked really well. It looks very effective.
-
Excellent result Mike. You have captured the look of the picture very nicely.

Hi all,
The kit supplied turnbuckles for the top and bottom cabane strut assemblies appear to be over sized.
I chose to replace them with Gaspatch metal 1:48th scale turnbuckles.
I cut away the kit turnbuckles and sanded flat the edges of the mounting.
Four holes of 0.3 mm diameter were drilled through the mounting edges.
Lengths of 0.08 mm diameter mono-filament were used to secure the turnbuckles to the edges of the mountings.
The top mounting was reinforced by adding 0.4 mm diameter Brass rod through the mounting and top of the cabane strut assembly.
Doing this secured the turnbuckles as well as allowing them the move for self-alignment when rigging.
I also added a pipe from the gravity fuel tank to the fuselage.
This was 0.2 mm diameter rod inserted into a hole, drilled into the pipe connection under the tank.
A length of MFH 0.4 mm diameter flexible black tube (P-961) was secured to the protruding rod,

Hi all,
With the wings and tail unit fitted, it's time for starting the rigging.
The rigging anchors in the trailing edges of the tail (both sides) and the wings are photo-etch ?HGW? 1/32nd scale Spoke Eyelets (132129).
The rigging on the landing gear, claw brake and wing flying/landing wires was fitted using 0.08 and 0.12 mm mono-filament with 0.4 mm and 0.5 mm blackened Brass tube.

Hi all,
The wings have now been rigged.
I've added the drags wires from the fuselage to the outer underside of the wings.
Also the wing warp control cables.
Finally, the wing outer bracing wires.
A combination of 0.08 or 0.12 mm diameter mono-filament, blackened 0.4 or 0.5 mm tube.
Turnbuckles are either Gaspatch 1:48th metal (Type C) or Proper Plane 1:32nd resin (RD-005).
Now it's time to rig the tail,

That's some intricate rigging that you've handled beautifully. A question - how did you paint the brass anchor point that has all the rigging lines attached? Was this just brush painted once the rigging was on the plane? Did you treat the brass with anything prior to painting?

Hi Nigel,
Normally I'd use Mr. Metal R or similar to treat the photo-etch before painting.
However, once it's all fitted, the rigging plate is suspended and not in contact with anything.
So I just brush painted the rigging plate with Tamiya X65 after it was all fitted and didn't bother to pre-treat it,

Hi all,
The underside tail warp control lines and restraining cable are now finished.
Now it's onto the rudder control and restraining cables,
