I chose to build the WnW SE.5a Hisso as Arthur Rhys-Davids machine at around the time of his fight with Werner Voss on 23rd September 1917. Voss had only turned 20 in April, Rhys-Davids was 3 days short of his 20th birthday. Rhys-Davids himself died barely a month later.
The build was out of the box with the exception of some amazing masks cut for my by FAf. Rigging was 0.10mm monofilament with Bobs Buckles as the turnbuckles

Very nice build of the SE5a, and both aircraft look great together. That's why I like historical modelling, bringing the past alive.

A very fine SE5a. And an extra applause from me for bringing these two contenders together in one photo. Great!

Nice job.

Really superb job!

That is a super model in every way. The two models together is really good - a tragic reminder of two young lives lost in conflict.

This is just a really good SE5a build. Great subject and impressive skill!

Thank you everyone for your kind comments. As I have said before, it is the people who have posted on this site who have taught me any skills I've acquired.
The historical aspect of WWI aircraft fascinates me. What those pilots did blows my mind. The sad part is the war. I can't remember where but one memoir I read wrote "we didn't talk about the past as we didn't have a past, we'd come straight from school. We couldn't talk about the future as we couldn't imagine a future where we weren't at war, so we lived in the present . . ."
Thanks again,
Ian
