Hello friends,
I started the first kit from the new company Gothaforce, Fokker D VII OAW in the markings of Leutnant Leusch, Jasta 19.
The kit is completely 3D printed, which is a completely new experience for me.
At first, you are surprised by the amount of sprues that need to be removed. But the funny thing is that removing the sprues is actually fun. The more you remove, the more the truly excellent details come to light, turning each step into a little journey of discovery.
Recently, there have also been some videos on YouTube that illustrate many of the steps. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5jKB2z64TRM5cJ5hvGC8IFmIwjfZWIhd&si=JfLUN9GHYHEofvxI
The assembly instructions are easy to understand, but you should stick to the individual assembly stages, and as a newcomer to 3D models, that's what I'll will do.

So let us start with the engine, the Mercedes D III a?.
There isn't much to glue; the engine block halves are simply slotted together, like Lego. The rest can be joined with UV resin, which I will receive later. CA will do for now, though.
The details are really great.

And here most of the parts of the engine

Base colors:

Painting the exhaust by brush, in a way that Bertl (Umlaufmotor) told us.
(https://i.postimg.cc/rF22xwks/IMG-9355.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Z0HQhZ0z)
(https://i.postimg.cc/T1g8FZrT/IMG-9356.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/bSyF2VC5)
I didn't like the airbrushed engine block, so I dabbed everything again with different metallic paints using a brush.

Excellent work! Both exhaust and engine look great after brush work.

Thank you, Fredrik !
In my opinion, the advantage of this 3D kit is that you don't have to spend a lot of time cleaning up and filling gaps, so you can concentrate fully on painting.
Here inlet manifolds, first painted with copper than black oils to simulate a worn finish

I added red bands around each cylinder, spare decals from a WNW kit. These bands were applied around every cylinder to indicate that they are over compressed. Weathering with oils.

It looked like the 3D printing layers were showing on the airbrushed engine block. It was worth going over it with a brush.
Yes, the red over compressed markings add a lot to the look, you did a great job with them! Overall, I really like your Mercedes engine!
It seems to me that it?s more finely detailed than what we usually see in the WnW kits.
-
Looks to be a brilliant kit, and your paintwork is beautiful. This is a most exciting thread for me. As mentioned, my kit is probably the last variant to be shipped, so I will be very interested in your experience with the UV adhesive method and the decals
Warren Q

Thank you Richard and Warren, much appreciated
Joerg

Excellent painting and finishing so far Joerg. I really like the finish on the exhaust.
-
Thank you Nigel !
The individual parts of the engine are assembled; everything holds together without glue and is later fixed with UV resin.

Some parts of the cockpit are primed with sail colour as a base for subsequent painting.
(https://i.postimg.cc/tgqq1xY3/IMG_9446.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/RWY5yq1h)
The wood of the cockpit floor is painted with oil paint, with a little clear orange and smoke added.

Well that's a proper little jewel. Seems a shame to wrap an aeroplane around it ;)
Paul
-
Thanks, Paul, that's very kind of you. I'll probably leave the engine cover off on one side so you can still see a bit of the engine 😉
Joerg
-
Nice work on those extra details, the engine looks great.
-
That engine looks so real!
Alan.
-
I agree with everyone else. This is quite a beautiful engine.
Warren Q
-
Thank you very much, Nigel, Alan and Warren. I'm glad you like it.
Joerg
-
Interesting kit , tagging along .
Alexis
-
Fantastic engine build! This looks like a great kit.
-
Thank you for this build thread. I was curious about the quality of 3D print and it looks top class.
So is your work on it, I especially admire the patience and skills with painting of many colours on single elements. I would prefer all those details arounf the engine to be separate, to be able to airbrush them without a fuss of masking...
-
Thank you for your kind words Alexis, Tim and Prez, means a lot to me.
In the meantime, I have been able to continue building and uncovering more parts.
New details are constantly coming to light. The representation of the rib tapes, for example, is impressive.
(https://i.postimg.cc/3Jb3K1j9/IMG_9815.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/2VvsG4KB)
Instrument decals applied
(https://i.postimg.cc/pdKvJtw1/IMG_9814.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/CZM9w9Lj)
The first parts for the cockpit are painted.
(https://i.postimg.cc/4xDZc3S9/IMG_9883.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/xX3WD9Yf)
Inserting the parts into the cockpit frame is relatively quick with a good pair of tweezers. Some simply click into the frame and hold without glue. For the others, I used resin UV, which is also sold by Gothaforce. It is clean and hardens quickly using a UV light torch.
(https://i.postimg.cc/j5Kb8FKq/IMG_9887.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/zLd6vpV4)
(https://i.postimg.cc/HkcdjMBm/IMG_9889.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/mPs05tvp)
The lozengedecals are still missing from the rear wall of the cockpit.
Cheers
Joerg

A beautiful paint job thus far on what appears to be a very nice kit. I love the just perfect amount of weathering.
Warren Q
-
Great stuff so far. The rib tapes caught my eye as well, amazing.
-
Very nice work on this so far Joerg. I have found the UV curing resin very helpful (I have some from Deluxe Materials in the UK). It's also great for replicating glass faces on instruments
-
Thank you Warren, Allan and Nigel, much appreciated.
Here a small update

Very nice work, love that additional chain!
-
Chapeau,Jorgo! where did you get that tiny chain from? Now all that's missing is the key ! ;)Adding this detail proves the fact that no kit is perfect..!
-
Thank you Nigel and Matz! The chain is from Aber , set of mini chains.
-
The cockpit was already looking terrific, and then that chain really is the icing on the cake. Lovely work! It's nice to see one of these kits underway.
-
Looks like the U.S.'s suspension of the de minimus customs clause will cause some extra "challenges" for USA customers such as myself. I am actually pretty confident that Christian and the gang will do everything they can for us folks across the Pond.
Update: Looks like Gothaforce is indeed taking care of their pre-order U.S. customers who have yet to receive their kits. I for one am rooting for these guys to succeed.
Warren Q
-
Oooooo , looking wonderful with all that detail !
Alexis
-
Amazing detail and beautifully painted!
-
Thank you very much, Zac, Alexis, Warren and Tim !
In the meantime, I have painted more small parts and prepared them for installation in the cockpit. And then I tried out bracing the fuselage frame with the elastic thread included in the kit from Modelkasten. The kit also includes very delicate turnbuckles, but I made my own from stretched cotton buds and painted them white. In the original, the turnbuckles were probably wrapped in fabric.

(https://i.postimg.cc/zB7q7fXN/IMG-0051.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hzJFPcdZ)
Now the compass, control column and seat with seat belts, painted with oil paints, are installed. Lead wire was added to the control column for the machine gun trigger and auxiliary throttle cables.
For the control cables, I used 0.1 mm rigging cord, which is used by ship model builders.

(https://i.postimg.cc/fRdZFCTB/IMG-0058.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/nXn69vmD)
Next, the remaining tensioning of the fuselage frame must be done, and then the whole thing will be installed in the fuselage.

Beautiful work on the interior Joerg, superb painting and weathering.
-
Just stunning
Paul
-
Absolutely brilliant work, Joerg - your model is so well detailed. Thanks for the tip on the amazing trick you pulled on the cotton bud shaft. That's one for the record books!
Cheers,
Gary
-
Thanks Nigel, Paul and Gary!
The problem with cotton buds is that you need ones with plastic shafts, and those are hard to find nowadays.
The rigging and control lines in the cockpit are now mostly finished. Anything that's still missing won't be visible once the fuselage is closed. 😉

(https://i.postimg.cc/Ls4V0cbt/IMG_0086.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/TKSmK4G1)
Before the cockpit can be inserted into the fuselage, the decals must be applied to the fuselage.
The Gothaforce decals can be easily applied in larger pieces using Set and Sol and later adapt perfectly to the surface.

Agree with Prze fantastic so far !
Alexis
-
After that gorgeous cockpit, I am looking forward to seeing how the "see through" fuselage looks. Looks pretty great so far.
Warren Q
-
Thank you for your kind comments, Prze, Alexis and Warren - much appreciated.
Now the decals are applied to the fuselage. First, I did some subtle preshading.
(https://i.postimg.cc/pLRxvJYf/IMG-0092.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hfyNbxYv)
(https://i.postimg.cc/pLCvL5qg/IMG-0101.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/9DDKx03p)
(https://i.postimg.cc/2SFdtr2k/IMG_0119.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Hrn7cGqR)
(https://i.postimg.cc/Ls9kKwbz/IMG_0121.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/xXZNLxYC)
Then the cockpit is pushed into the fuselage. There are pins on the fuselage walls that fit into the holes in the oil tank. To prevent anything from getting caught when pushing it in, the pins are covered with paper.
(https://i.postimg.cc/jSrQvL63/IMG_0130.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/vc3VZ8N5)
(https://i.postimg.cc/gJ53hJkD/IMG_0133.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/WFGDLsZF)
The cockpit and hull are now connected; the gap between the frame and side wall disappears when the cockpit coaming is fitted.
(https://i.postimg.cc/qBhsT8jZ/IMG_0141.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/QVD9gWLp)
Because the fuselage walls are so thin and the decals are transparent, there is actually a shine-through effect. You can even see the tension wires when held up to the light. I hadn't thought that was possible before.
(https://i.postimg.cc/QMd7n5Fm/IMG_0142.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/fV1kVVjS)
(https://i.postimg.cc/Fsn1sqzy/IMG_0143.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/KRBm00nj)
Now the motor can be pressed into the frame. This is also a simple task: the pins on the motor fit into the corresponding holes and everything fits immediately.
(https://i.postimg.cc/MZCyKvLZ/IMG_0147.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/vDv10HMC)
(https://i.postimg.cc/nrDBGJXt/IMG_0150.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Mfznzg0s)
Cheers
Joerg
-
Now that is a cool effect !
Alexis
-
We never had the time to truly finish one, at best the Moson sample half naked on one side, decals on the other. So to see this thing now come alive in such a way as you do, hats off Joerg!! You make it shine. Keep rocking, curious about the end result.
C
-
Lovely work all round Joerg, you are doing a fantastic job on this one.
-
What an incredible model. The level of detail is unprecedented. Masterful paintwork and assembly Joey!
-
Brilliant model, brilliant modeller!
Warren Q
-
Thank you very much, Alexis, Nigel, Tim and Warren !
I have now applied the decals to the wings. The decals are translucent and can be applied in a similar way to those from Aviattic. There is no need for a primer, as the resin of the wings is white. It is better to work with water only, as this makes the decals much easier to move.
I think the colours of the lozenge are well chosen and harmonise well.

(https://i.postimg.cc/cJCst4x5/IMG-0492.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/8F88qGrh)
Then I started painting the remaining parts such as struts, engine covers and fuselage cover. Shading and weathering still need to be done, so far only a little chipping.
(https://i.postimg.cc/rw8ycNvT/IMG-0490.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/xc4V3Mfp)
(https://i.postimg.cc/hP0gC7h5/IMG-0394.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/jLCG22HH)
When removing the chassis from the sprues, I was once again amazed by the fantastic details. They even thought of the rubber bands for the suspension.
(https://i.postimg.cc/CL0SH4M8/IMG-0472.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/rzfBqxry)

After a short vacation, we continue with the propeller. The wood imitation was created using colored pencils on a matte base color of desert yellow. Bertl (Umlaufmotor) had previously presented this method.
The propboss is very delicate, but looks even more realistic when the holes are painted with wood paint.
(https://i.postimg.cc/QtvdFfpn/IMG_0963.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/BLc0yc7x)

(https://i.postimg.cc/FH9sNNCn/IMG-1021.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/F7BQx54j)
The radiator and cockpit cover are easy to install, and everything fits perfectly.

(https://i.postimg.cc/pLqVd4gx/IMG_1027.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/QFKZ448n)
(https://i.postimg.cc/d03sZnYF/IMG_1029.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/xkrDWv8p)
The right side panel is not yet glued on, but it already fits well.
(https://i.postimg.cc/rwQyp3vM/IMG_1026.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/mP1WXXL5)
The 3D-printed radiator is extremely fine; you can see through it, so an airbrush is absolutely essential here.

Amazing prop boss detail. We overlooked that so thx for bringing that to attention. Checked with Costas if we can make those prop recesses see-thru. Of course he said, but first priority is finishing the other schemes. The Tsipourro brand is very good too ;-)
-
Lovely work Joerg all round. I really like the propellor, you did a great job on this. I too have started using Bertl's method as well, although I do find it quite time consuming! But the end result looks really realistic.
-
Some very stunning work... I just love that propellor! So well done! Regards, Marc
-
Joerg, this is turning out so well, it's making me afraid to start on my Jungwirth and Under kits 😁 for fear of not doing these kits justice.
Warren Q
-
Wow such an amazing build! You really are making it look beautiful ;D
How tight are the tolerances? Is it like WNW where you have to go around scraping every surface of everything?
-
Thank you for your kind comments, much appreciated !
@ Warren: don?t Be afraid and start Jungwirth, this is about enjoying your hobby, not about competition -)
@ AngryJazz: the tolerantes are tight but not like with WNW (I built a WNW Focker D VII a few years ago), you hardly need to scrape anything off, everything fits well.
Now the lower wings and machine guns are attached. You don't really need glue for this, because it snaps together, almost like Lego.
I tried to depict the rib structure on the horizontal stabiliser and vertical stabiliser. It might need to be lightened up a bit later.

Hi friends,
now we're entering the final phase. The wings are assembled, which was the easiest and quickest wing assembly so far. Everything fit right away without a jig.

The tail unit was lightened up a bit more.

Now it's time to assemble the control cables. The kit includes turnbuckles for this purpose. The tubing are cotton buds (made of plastic) stretched over a candle. The core is a very thin steel wire, so that everything has the same thickness.

Lovely detail work Joerg, this is coming together really nicely.

I'm really enjoying seeing this come together, and the extra detail work you're putting in to make the kit really pop. Lovely work!
-
Awesome to see this coming together so nicely, Joerg. Great job!
Just in case someone might think Joerg may not have aligned the port cross properly.
Here is a section of a rare picture, which shows OAW crosses on Leusch were further outboard, and a replacement port aileron (with cross in the regular position) also featuring some repair work. The dragon is in the detail

And then the rear-view mirror still needs to be fitted. For the mirror effect, I used liquid chrome for the first time, which actually reflects the surroundings.

The final details look great, looking forward to the completed pictures!

Your work, particularly your painting and weathering is nothing short of mind blowing! I don't and probably won't get this particular kit but I will try to replicate some of what you've done on my WnW version.
