Title: 1/32 Roden Fokker DVI
Post by: DaveB on May 27, 2025, 07:41:43 PM
All,

I've actually built this one before a few years ago but come across this kit second hand (all sealed and in good condition) which was up for 25 quid too good to miss out on.

I've therefore just completed this one this time in some different markings not in the box.   I've also attempted to correct (and detail up) on the basic kit.   This is a great kit from Roden but requires some careful fitting together and involves some pretty intensive decal work.  The areas corrected include the upper wing cut out (enlarging); axle aerofoil wing reducing in width and removing some incorrect details underneath it; eliminating the strange gap molded into the horizontal stabiliser and adding some missing panel/access hatch details on the underside.  Cockpit has been detailed up using an Eduard DR1 PE set and I have reversed the lozenge decal for the interior to give illusion of the pattern showing through.  Various very minor detailing also completed.    I also attempted to move the upper wing forward (kit has this set back by about 5 mm) but struggled here trying do this without the aid of some form of wing alignment jig,   After breaking the port side interplane and one of the cabane support struts I decided best to admit defeat here.  I have managed to shunt wing forward but only about a 1mm so does not really notice other than the fact the interplane struts sit better.

It also took some time to get a decent lower fit as, from the kit, does not fit properly giving and very deep wings down appearance if not corrected.  All control surfaces and cabane struts reinforced using brass wire pins.  Lozenge decals from the kit are a bit too bright for my eyes so toned these down by adding some brown to my clear matt coats to seal in decals to model surface.

I'm generally very pleased how this has turned out although there a couple of flaws which I will have to live with!

I also decided to go with a different marking (as good as the 'Fratz' one is) so come across a Ronny Bar colour profile which I really liked and was one that I could adapt the kit supplied markings too.

This was a really great project for me and I struggled to put this one down!

Completed in markings to represent DVI (serial unknown) Jagdstaffel 80b, Morsberg, Germany, August 1918.   Please note:  I only had the aircraft profile to work with so I had to speculate as to colours/markings on upper and lower sides.   Therefore, if it's wrong it's wrong!

Excellent job on a venerable kit! The lozenge decals look pretty good after the way you finished them, very nice job all round.

That's a terrific model, Dave. A new scheme to me - and a very welcome one.
Great to see the old Rodens getting due appreciation, certainly to this standard. Nice one.

There is another cracker Dave. I saw you applying the lozenge so I know what an effort that was!

Interesting and different markings too - in all another of your excellent builds.

Stephen.

This is a great build. I have this kit in the stash, but it has slid some as I have been chicken to work with those lozenge decals, and haven't seen a scheme I really liked until now. Excellent work!

Gents,

Thank you all and glad you like my chosen scheme.

I forgot to mention I used some WNW rib tape decals instead of using the kit version - you have to cut these yourself and I know from previous experience difficult to get an even cut in width.  Also, I was using every piece of the kit upper lozenge as I was using some to completed inside the cockpit fuselage 'walls' and for the seat support frame cover.

Regards

Dave

Beautiful job Dave.
Your build inspired me to hunt up my own in 1/48 scale.

Very kind of you to say, Allan -

I'm delighted my build has inspired you!   Will look forward to what you can do with this old Eduard kit.
