Ok, here goes, Actually I had got it more completed in 2012 than I thought; I found a match box with the rudders ready and the set of tyres in various states of sanding. Now.. the dust must be removed gently and then it is Avanti!

Can't deny I'm very excited about this one :D

Me too! An amazing plane that definitely needs to be represented in model form.
-
WOW! I'll follow this!
-
This is absolutely gorgeous ! I had planned to do that several years ago but lost interest after building my Caproni Ca 3's...I'm looking forward to watching this progress!
-
WOW! This is looking to be an Incredible Shelf Queen re-boot!
RAGIII
-
Must have been a very large shelf to hold this queen! :)
It's an incredible scratch build, I'll definitely follow.
-
Wow....
-
Thanks!
Lately I have been working in the tyre factory. Quite hard to make them all exactly the same size?

WOW!

Rigging is soon, making popcorn and getting comfy to watch that.
Any way we can see the start of this amazing build?
Can't imagine the sound of the wind in the wires made while flying.

Thanks Guys for the encouragement!
Unfortunately I am not able to show any photos of the earlier stages. I started this project about 14 or 15 years ago. I got the plans from the classic Harleyford book on Reconnaisance and Bomber Aircraft 1914-18. Although it is from the 60?s or even earlier, many of the plans in that book are actually pretty accurate and go well with the more modern research. Same cannot be said of their Seaplane book.
I did the model in the usual method of St. Harry of Woodman tradition. Balsa core and scored plastic, glued together with a contact glue. For the nacelle I did a balsa mould and did some heat forming of plasticard in two halves.
Then I got sidetracked due to family matters and I actually put the whole hobby on ice for time being. The Caproni languished on top of a shelf in the cellar gathering dust for over 10 years. Until now.
During the covid times, I thought why not try to start again and for the last three years I have been very active again. Most of the modelling time has been spent on easier ww2 kit projects, but I have also been learning the ww1 scratch stuff all over again. It is surprising how much you forget in ten years, without the constant practice.
But now, Caproni is getting ready little by little, thanks to your encouragement in not inconsiderable amount. And yes, the rigging will be quite a project - not necessarily very hard this time, but many many many times the same things again and again
Cheers, Skyhook

A little progress since the last time. Exhausts added and the support strut below the nacelle too, with generators. Next the plumbing for the radiators, the oil tank and the wiring for the generators.
I also painted the overall colour more or less ready for insignia etc. I am going to make one of the operational night bombers from the late 1918 and it seems to have been painted all over in one, relatively dark colour. In the Windsock and other sources it seems to be identified as darkish green. Different photos give a different contrast between the wing and the green of the roundel. The fuselage number in white has a background that looks always black/very dark in every photo, so i do not know yet will I make it black or red. The red paint has certainly been available for the insignias.
I chose Xtracolor Prewar Nivo as the overall color, because its greyish green will give some contrast to the green of the roundels and the fin flashes.
Cheers, Skyhook

Wow, it's amazing to see this in all its glory. It's a big beast and those scratchbuilt wings look superb, I'm impressed with the quality of such large pieces of scratch work. Superb, I am so glad you are finishing this.
-
Man, that is impressive work! It's almost hard to believe this beast flew operationally 8)
RAGIII
-
Please do be careful, with all that wing area a slight gust of wind could send it off your deck!!
So many, many ribs.
-
Thank you all for your kind comments! And yes, i try to choose moments between the gusts of wind when photographing the model on the edge of the balcony :)
Some progress after the last pics. Now the generators etc. have been added and the extensive plumbing for the radiators. I also painted the roundels (the red dots are of the courtesy of surplus japanese ww2 hinomarus!). I will leave a lots of the minor details; control horns, armament and even the rudders to wait, until I have done most of the rigging. So much turning the big model around in different positions to be done during the tedious process, that I am sure I would snap them many times in the process.
Cheers, Skyhook

Wow! Impressive model.

I can't believe I missed this one.
I think this is my favorite among all the shelf queens.
Nice to see the use of Isotta-Fraschini engines in a model.
Great work!

Good colour match! ;)
-
That is seriously impressive Skyhook. You motivate me to try a full scratch build project myself. I particularly like your radiators. Nicely done!
Tim
-
That is just amazing....
-
It is indeed amazing. And what's more amazing is the fact that it is going to be rigged!!
-
Holy cow Nigal, I hadn't thought about that !!
Investing in E-Z line stock now....
-
I just hope Lukgraph does not see this masterpiece, the Ca.3 is big enough... ;D ;D ;D
-
I salute your dedication to get all those struts to line up straight and true! Amazing!
-
Thanks everyone for your encouraging comments!
I have now done the rigging of the wings, took a few days :). Next up, the fuselage insignias, rudders, additional bombs to the sides of the container, armament and the long wires that support the whole plane structure. Photos will come as soon as I get some of that done. And the triplane is a big model indeed. But surprisingly short fuselagewise. Takes a smaller footprint in the display case than a 1/72 Lancaster!
Cheers, Skyhook
-
Congrats on a mighty achievement Skyhook - That's a gorgeous model and even if it takes up less room in the display case than a Lanc I know which I'd rather see in mine ;)
