Title: "Shelf Queen 2025 GB" Eduard 1/48 Hannover CL.IIIa....FINI...
Post by: Allan31 on February 13, 2025, 04:47:37 AM
This actually started as somebody else's "shelf queen" but it IS already started. I woke up and didn't want to go another day without a Hannover on the shelf.
Evilbay offered this up for $34.99. Already started, it's qualified for the "Shelf Queen" GB.

Came with usable kit decals and an additional set that would have been included with the Koster Aero Enterprises Hannover kit.

Fuselage and cockpit is already together and painted dark grey, should be varnished wood, I hope I can get in there.

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/179244ed-7fbc-44dd-bccb-1fd29c7e24f6.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/179244ed-7fbc-44dd-bccb-1fd29c7e24f6.jpg)

Several bits have come loose in the cockpit. An inventory of parts revealed everything is complete in the box except one itty bitty cylinder head.

I have 5, I need 6. I hope I can fix these after being damaged. I will try and fake something up and put on the last cylinder hidden under the wing.

I will re-imagine these intakes with round material instead of the P-E stuff.

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/3a82246e-6a50-45fb-80e5-9132f1af49a9.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/3a82246e-6a50-45fb-80e5-9132f1af49a9.jpg)

The wing is incorrectly made as one long sweeping curve. The Hannover had 3 separate sections of straight upper wing.

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/bb64d29c-4f8d-45b1-a664-51132af4e4ca.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/bb64d29c-4f8d-45b1-a664-51132af4e4ca.jpg)

Boiling water allowed me to soften enough to straighten and flatten.

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/43088ef6-d6dc-4a91-b72d-d2472fd3d52e.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/43088ef6-d6dc-4a91-b72d-d2472fd3d52e.jpg)

I then made deep cuts on the bottom and super glued in correct position. (Notice the holes for the cabane struts are not equidistance from the center line of the wing, put a pin in that for now...)

Apparently all early Eduard kits were timid on panel lines so all those have been re-scored deeper along with the missing ones on the top wing. I will add the missing hinges with my furnace tape.

Bottom stabilizer was fabric covered wood so no ribs.

Just like the Pup, early Eduard kits had good bones and plenty of room to improve.

More soon.

Looks like you are putting in a lot of effort to correct the shortcomings of this kit. I have seen these Hanovers end up looking really good so I am looking forward to seeing the progress of your one.
Alan.

Excellent work on this. This kit is definitely worth the effort IMO, so it's great to see you doing it justice.

I tried to make my own intake manifolds but it wasn't working out so I used the kits P-E.

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/73ab40b4-1a0c-4838-a119-a4830ff03845.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/73ab40b4-1a0c-4838-a119-a4830ff03845.jpg)

I tried to give it some dimension beyond the flat brass by adding some 5-minute epoxy.

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/403cfef6-4d99-4ce2-838b-b93c7494420e.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/403cfef6-4d99-4ce2-838b-b93c7494420e.jpg)

I was able to straighten out the rocker arms that came bent in the kit. I made the missing rocker arm set from sheet plastic.

This should be fine since so much engine is hidden by covers.

I was surprised (perhaps I shouldn't be) that Eduards did not include any kind of separate gun ring for the rear cockpit.

Years ago I found somekind of knitting needles or something at the craft store bargin bin for pennies. I bought them for the variety of sizes and made from plastic tubes.

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/023cd0a0-2dc8-4a63-975d-42dd13ab9bba.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/023cd0a0-2dc8-4a63-975d-42dd13ab9bba.jpg)

I found a bit the correct size to hold the tube and mounted it in my drill to use as a lath.

I used the back of a x-acto blade to cut off a ring.

Still a bit large, I removed a small section to lessen the diameter.

I'm working on the interior and trying to decide if I want to try and add the warpage or washout to the ailerons. More hot water on the kitchen stove....

Great bit of scratch building.

Now that really is clever scratchbuilding, well done! And your fix for the intake manifolds looks great, the flat lower part will be hidden anyway.

A bit more progress.

There is noticeable wash-out ( correct word?) on the ailerons. Out with the boiling water again.

Eduard would have you hang the exhaust entirely outside the engine covers. Hannover had cut outs for the exhaust.

I think I'm about ready to start painting, I'll start with lozenges on the upper wing.

More soon.

That?s looking really good Allan. You have about as much corrections and scratch building as I had with the 1/72 Airfix kit!
Keep up the great work!

Thanks all for following along.
There are about 50 little rear facing exhaust louvers around the cowling.

Eduard has these wrong and I was attempting to correct them but I just can not figure out a good way to do it.
I did take a 1/16" drill bit and ground down the end to the shape I needed.

I heated it up and tried it out but I can do a few but not 50 consistantly.

I will get some "Archer Transfers" louvers and be wrong but be done.

The only ever experience with lozenge I've had was the Fokker D.VIII I did a couple of months ago. I started on the lower wing and wondered why it looked funny.

Duh..... I fixed it and moved on.

I hand painted the center section. On the real aircraft, this section photographs very dark so I overlaid some violet. But it may be the same Prussian blue on top for all I know.

And this where we are tonight.

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/f2e4e0fe-f387-4478-b1bd-c66a1de6a882.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/f2e4e0fe-f387-4478-b1bd-c66a1de6a882.jpg)

I may go back and redo the field repaired part of the lower wing in 4 color lozenge as they might have done.
I'm going to mask and airbrush the top of the wing as I don't want brush marks.

And then......rib tapes....

I will give myself a break and apply lozenge decals for the upper colors then clean the airbrush and tackle the lozenge on the fuselage.
This is a very tedious painting process, I can see why an all red triplane is appealing...

Thanks all, this a tedious build.....
Before I can start painting on the lozenge fuselage, I had to finish any surgery and PE work.

It took me awhile to figure out what was going on with the lifting hand holds.
Eduard has them as just plates.

Sadly, those rocker arms and push-rods are taking a beating. I will have to come up with something.
Now I can finally get to finishing the lozenge decals and airbrushing.

And just when I thought my Hannover building could not get any worse, I found this in the stash while looking for something else....

Nice work so far Nigel on the details . Haven't built this kit many many moons ago now it was a challenge for me back then . It is when I got into building WW 1 Aircraft . I bought this kit and the SSW D.III . Still have another Hannover in the stash so will be making a few building notes as I follow along .

I was not happy with the way these Vallejo paints brush out so airbrush it is.

I used the 1/48 scale drawings in the Datafile #23 and traced off the side views on tracing paper.

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/66aaf09e-b734-4841-bd25-685b9fc56fd5.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/66aaf09e-b734-4841-bd25-685b9fc56fd5.jpg)

In pencil I roughed in where I thought I wanted the shapes then did an ink tracing of that and made 2-3 copies.

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/13853a7a-3fc6-46bb-a6a9-6db94c38ceed.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/13853a7a-3fc6-46bb-a6a9-6db94c38ceed.jpg)

I started with the yellow over all.

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/bf73c23e-ecbd-487c-a7d8-b3fa294e5a5d.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/bf73c23e-ecbd-487c-a7d8-b3fa294e5a5d.jpg)

Using Friskit material, made for airbrushing, I cut out the numbered colors I needed. If your copy gets too cut up, use another copy. Do not cut on your original.

I did not like the green so I re-shot it.

Then looking again at the top wing, I decided to reshoot that as well. I found colors closer to the MicroSculpt 5-color I'm using on the wings.

I shot colors on the bottom of the fuselage. It seems to me, they shot some of the Prussian Blue on the bottom. It sure appears dark compared to the bottom wing lozenge.

That green is definitely an improvement IMO, well worth the effort.

I've always been a bit dubious about the stripey underside. It seems an odd thing to do that just complicates the production process. Most photos don't really show the underside and even the one you have there isn't that clear, so I think overspraying with blue makes sense.

Oooooh , that's nice !

Have you had issues with Vallejo model air paints ? My stock of paints went bad . They gummed up and will not thin at all . Had to toss more then have of the paints . I was very fond of their WW2 German colours and their metal coat line .

It's really hard to tell what is going on in those photos. There's definitely some form of stripe visible, but then the colour just in front of the cross field appears to wrap on to the underside just ahead of the stripe. As always, I think whatever you go with based on your interpretation of original photos is absolutely fine.

Mile stone of sorts, all the lozenge is on and have started rib tapes.

Rib tape tutorial:   https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=14904.0

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/5c284cd7-aa47-4497-ab32-14da92d25c3a.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/5c284cd7-aa47-4497-ab32-14da92d25c3a.jpg)

I think I should repaint the bottom stabilizers.

You can see the rib tapes started above.

Thanks all,
Alexis, no I haven't had any problems so far, in fact I bought online for cheap about 40 bottles used and only discarded about 4-5. I have had some get a bit gummy but nothing some Tamiya thinner didn't fix.
I like that they include the FS numbers and I agree with you the Luftwaffe set colors seem spot on to me. I also bought their RAF set and was very pleased.

Before the Vallejo I tried the Mission Models and was very disappointed. I dumped the whole lot I bought.

This has been a great thread to follow as I too have a Hannover kit I would like to build some day.  You're doing a great job on this one.

How are the Microsculpt decals?  Any quirks or issues with them?  Did you use decal solution with them?  I have some that I thought I'd try on a current build.

Thanks all, this is really a long build...
BigSky, yes, I love the MicroSculpt decals. For me, the colors are correct, they are thin, they stick, and have an important advantage over the Aviattic.
I should have masked and painted the wing tanks long ago but I didn't. I used green painters tape but still had some problems when de-masking.

Whatever. With the Microsculpt you can easily figure out a patch and just lay it down and it is virtually invisible.

Good save on the decal patches, those rib tapes look good. Applying individual rib tapes certainly makes you cross-eyed, and it's hard to tell when they are straight because the lozenge pattern can throw your vision off! But these look great.

Thanks all,
Yes, carrier film on canopies. I vac my own canopies, a coat of Future, canopy frames, another coat of Future. Carrier film disappears.
As it does with the rib tapes.

I was thinking how I was going to match "Prussian Blue" and started rooting around the www for a recipe. Then thought,"Hey, what if someone...."

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/65b33364-102e-463d-b932-f4058815f43b.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/65b33364-102e-463d-b932-f4058815f43b.jpg)

That was a lucky break....

I want the metal parts to be 100% blue, shot those first.

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/8d31c8ec-eed8-434d-971a-73d2b25219ed.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/8d31c8ec-eed8-434d-971a-73d2b25219ed.jpg)

I then thinned and Futured the blue and misted it on pretending to "be" the painter.

I wish I had gone a little bit lighter with the blue to let the lozenge show more but.....

Future and markings next. This will be the prettiest most colorful model in the cabinet.

Thanks all.
So this is the state of play as of Tuesday morning. Much hand wringing....

Look at the tail coverings compared to the wings..

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/fc6a4d34-88ca-47d9-a164-e0473ce8ecd7.png) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/fc6a4d34-88ca-47d9-a164-e0473ce8ecd7.png)

Both the plywood covered and the fabric covered areas are much, much darker than the wings or anything else but they DO match the fuselage.

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/4e2414e1-cd2a-40ec-9917-d028f2ac79bb.png) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/4e2414e1-cd2a-40ec-9917-d028f2ac79bb.png)

So, after consulting with my better half and much more hand wringing, the upper parts of the empennage were lightly coated in Prussian Blue.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

The arrow decal is much too short but I'm not wanting to cut masks and airbrush and blah, blah, blah so it's staying short.

Sadly, life is getting in the way for at least the next week. A Florida beach with two chaises is calling us, be back in a week or so....
Thanks for following along.

Wonderful work Allan. Your hand sprayed lozenge and draft pen rib tapes are quite impressive.  I agree the tail surface looks very similar to the fuselage. This will be really impressive when assembled.

All the best,
Tim

Good call, I think it makes sense to overspray the tail surfaces. Interpreting the photos is all part of the fun! Have a nice break.

Really enjoying this build Allan

Tail colours look good to my eye although I get the hand wringing before making decisions (sometimes I spend more time thinking and procrastinating than I do actually making) ::)

Enjoy your break

Experimenting with louvers is over and I'm resorting to the Archer 3D printed decals. Not exactly correct but good enough.
After buying a couple or sheets the wrong size, I found these at the correct spacing and trimmed them down to the correct width.

You can see how the rocker arms have taken a beating. I will have to try and make replacements from sheet styrene.

I've actually come to the point where I'm attaching things to each other. Seems like many weeks of preparation.
When I attached the tail feathers, they didn't look right. I seem to be caught in a loop of endless fixes and correcting.

I debated just leaving them like that but then wondered about my future ability to get any sleep. Oh hell, I've come this far. Snap, snap...

I shaved off a good 1/16" near the front and to 0 at the back.

Jeez..

At some point, the tail skid went AWOL. It looked a lot like a D.V skid so I pinched one from the Glencoe D.III that will never get built.

Close enough. I've added a GasPatch Spandau but still need an ammo shoot. I added the exhaust manifolds and as a homage to the original builder who had already painted them, I left them as is.

It just doesn't end with this thing......

Part is me and part is Eduard. I went to attach the lower wings to the fuselage using the Datafile drawings as a guide.
"That's funny, why is Eduards wing back almost a 1/4 inch from the drawing?".....

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/9d2357b4-f55a-4bb9-82c7-e5173740cd7d.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/9d2357b4-f55a-4bb9-82c7-e5173740cd7d.jpg)

When I checked the top wing alignment and it was correct I knew I was in trouble...

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/d982f421-d70a-4100-b39a-f160b7891756.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/d982f421-d70a-4100-b39a-f160b7891756.jpg)

So, is the top wing too far forward or the bottom wings too far back. Top is correct, bottom is wrong.
I was willing to live with this as I am so done trying to fix this thing.

However.....

Cabane struts fit fine with just a slight bit off center. There is something goofy with this kit, I'm thinking Eduards eyeballed some stuff rather than actually measure it. The space between the outer edge of the top wing crosses and the outer edge of the wing as example, the rear empennage in my last post, I digress...
Getting interplane struts to reach was problematic and to compound the issue, I dialed in a little too much sweptback. This culminated in way too much dihedral in the lower wings.

My bad. The lower wings are twice the dihedral they should be.
I was going to leave it, rig it, put it up on the very back of my darkest shelf and go out and work on my Merlyn.
So, I re-assessed this morning. All my other fixes throughout this build have worked great so why should I quit on the last lap now.

You can see the hole where the pin on the wing should be, I will drill new holes and make brass pins in the wing. there is a slight 2-3 degree clockwise roll to the upper wing. I will align the lower wings with the same roll so they match. You can't see the mis-alignment with the fuselage with the naked Mk.I eyeball.
I don't know If I can save the struts, I think I can.

I have no idea how all this is going to effect the landing gear and it's positioning on the fuselage.

I will jump off that bridge when I get to it.....

What a struggle.
IIRC the u/c vee struts are too short giving propper axle position only when hanging down vertically,
so better check carefully.

OMG! You are showing incredible dedication to accuracy here. I would not have bothered, I doubt anyone would have noticed unless you had told us. She was looking really good until you snapped the wings off (:o), but I am sure you will recover this.

Ya know how some people can buy a kit, open it, read and follow directions, paint it in whatever their favorite color is and stick on the shelf smiling? Yea, I don't know either.....

The wings looked really ridiculous the way I had mounted them before so I snapped them off and started over.
Much, much better results this time matching the Datafile drawings almost exactly.

As I suspected, this correction now put the landing gear struts in the wrong position. The axle should be in front of the leading edge of the wing and the forward strut should attach directly below the cabane strut attachment point.

Came out great on the first shot. I'm really pleased the wings all are in the correct position, they line up with each other, landing gear is in the right spot now, top and bottom wings are parallel and align with the rear empennage. I was able to save the struts with one just barely reaching but it's in.
