This is my attempt at the 1/32 Mikr Mir E.V/D.VIII. I don't think it's a bad kit but much like the Special Hobby Morane-Sauliner Type N, it suffers from an inadequate set of instructions. As for the plastic, I was unimpressed with the engine. The build logs, from better modellers than I will ever be, scared the snot out of me regarding the struts, so for the first time, I built some of the struts (with 20 gauge wire and brass tube) (all except the cabane tripods). As a result this thing is pretty sturdy. I also used a glue looper :) and a scratch pen for the first time. I got out of hand with my upper wing washes, and so they are more opaque than I intended. Occasionally, small parts were lost to the carpet monster, and there are a litany of other issues. However my goal was reached: you can tell that this is supposed to represent some type of aircraft.
This all goes to say that it really makes me appreciate the incredible builds I've seen on this site over the years.

Great job Warren
Not the easiest of models to put together and I suspect there are a lot that get looked at and then discarded to the back of the shelf once again which is a shame since yours shows that with a bit of effort a really nice model can be built 8)
Personally I like the slightly heavier streaking' (I can picture the scene in the factory as some poor worker is harangued by T.F. himself for wasting paint and henceforth becomes responsible for the lightest streaked aircraft that leave the factory) ;) ::)
Personally I think the DVIII is one of the finest designs of the first world war. It represents the smallest and lightest airframe possible, powered by an engine that was essentially from the earliest stages of the war, but despite the lack of power it still carries two machine guns and was a high preforming aircraft - classic design. (and an eye popping colour scheme) ;D

I think you did a great job, this kit definitely has its challenges (I have one which is a bit of a shelf queen). The overall finish is really good and the build quality is excellent. I presume you masked the diamonds - if so, that's very impressive work. Yes, the wings could have been a bit streakier but I think it works and it gives the right impression of the colour scheme. Lovely work all round.

Nice colourful D.VIII, Warren.
Very clean professional paint job, and a splendid pairing with the Tripe!

Well done Warren, I remember your tripe, they look great together.

Beautiful job on a very challenging Kit Warren. Well I remember struggling with this one and, like you, resorting to replacing the struts (in my case with brass and probably the roughest example of beginner's soldering in the history of model building!) when the kit was new to the market.
My compliments and congratulations, she's a beauty!
Cheers,

Thanks everyone for your too kind comments. The support of other members is one of the things that make this site great.
Nigel: Yes, the diamonds were masked. God save Tamiya masking tape. I went through a ton of that.

Excellent result from a lest than perfect kit, Warren.
You did a great job on the fuselage diamonds too!
Incidentally, I built this kit a few years back and built from the box using the kit supplied cabane struts - they were not brilliant but seemed to hold together well enough though.

As others have commented, the diamond pattern on the fuselage is simply stunning. That is a first class model in every way - I would be very proud if that was on my shelf!
